English Charger Professional Series GKL122-1.0.1en/ja
Introduction
The GKL 122 is an intelligent charger
employing advanced charging
technology. It is suitable for charging
all Leica batteries not only from the
mains supply but also in a vehicle,
and represents an optimal
complement to your battery-operated
Leica Geosystems instrument (see
"View of system").
The only difference between the
GKL122, GKL122-1, GKL122-3 and
GKL122-4 chargers lies in the mains
cable. Only the designation GKL122
will be used in the following.
Up to four batteries may be
connected to the charger. The type of
cell technology used in the battery
(NiCd, NiMH, LiIon, lead) is
immaterial because the
microprocessor-controlled charger
recognises the type of battery which
has been connected, and its state of
charge, and deduces from this
charging parameters such as
charging current and charging
algorithm.
The batteries are charged as quickly
and reliably as possible one after the
other (sequentially) in the order they
are connected, and so hold their
charge for a long time.
The charging time depends primarily
on the maximum charging current,
the battery capacity and its state of
charge on insertion / connection (see
"Technical Data".
Only Leica batteries with 5-pin
charger plugs or Leica standard
batteries in "camcorder format" with
four contacts and integral
temperature sensor and battery
recognition are charged quickly.
Older Leica batteries with 2-pin
charger plugs can only be connected
to the charger by using a suitable
adapter cable. They are charged in
about 14 hours (normal charging).
Additionally, there is a refresher
function available which first fully
discharges the battery which is
connected and then carries out quick
charging. This is particularly
important for NiCd batteries because
of the so-called "memory effect" (see
"Refreshing Batteries"). This function
can only be used for batteries which
can also be quickly charged.
The charger is only suitable
for charging and discharging
original Leica batteries as well as
some camcorder batteries (see
"Connecting Batteries").

Operation
Connecting the charger
WARNING:
Use the charger only
indoors, in dry rooms. Units which
have become wet and contain
condensed air must not be used.
During the charging process
avoid fast increasing of
ambient temperature.
Before using the unit for the first
time, ensure that it is standing firmly
or attach it so that it is not possible to
change the position of the unit
unintentionally. Connect the unit to
the mains supply either with the
mains cable supplied or if using in a
vehicle with the vehicle's electrical
system by using the vehicle cable
supplied.
If no battery is connected, only the
round operating lamp still remains
showing green following this function
control.
If the round operating lamp should
extinguish and the four triangular
battery lamps show a continuous red
light, it means that the unit has
detected a fault (see "Illuminated Dis-
play").
For a safe separation from
mains and if the charger is
not used for a longer period, the plug
of the mains cable and the plug of
the vehicle cable must be
disconnected.
Pay attention to the correct
polarity of the cigarette lighter
when using older motor
vehicles (+ pole on centre
contact).
In case of a wrong polarity
the fuse of the charger must
be replaced by a field
technician.
For supply of charger via
vehicle connector only use
vehicle on-board supply
systems.
In case of power supply via
other systems (e.g. current-
limiting power supply units)
malfunctions could be the
result.
Supplementations

9
Charger Professional Series GKL122-1.0.1en/ja English
With camcorder batteries
having three contacts, the
following requirements must be
fulfilled as otherwise serious damage
could result:
• 6V voltage
•only NiCd or NiMH cells
• minimum capacity: NiCd
1500mAh, NiMH 1800mAh
• compatible contacts (+, T, - in one
row)
Camcorder batteries manufacturers
which meet these conditions are
quickly charged with a charging
current of 1.8A and the temperature
is monitored simultaneously.
On adapter plate GDI121 (item no.
667124) camcorder batteries with 3
contacts cannot be charged.
WARNING:
For safety reasons, only Lei-
ca Geosystems lithium
(LiIon) batteries may be connected.
Battery connections (III) or (IV)
(see "Most important elements")
Leica batteries with 5-pin charging
plugs (e.g. GEB 87, GEB 70, ...) are
connected to these two connections
with the charging cable.
Leica batteries with 2-pin charging
plugs can also be connected using
an adapter cable.
Connecting batteries
Leica standard batteries (GEB111,
GEB121) have four contact
surfaces, while camcorder batteries
have three contacts. The charger can
differentiate between these types and
adapt the charging procedure
accordingly.

Determining charging sequence
If more than one battery is connected
to the charger, they are charged in
the order that they have been
connected. For this reason, connect
the battery that is most urgently
needed so that it has priority for
charging.
Priority
Leica standard batteries and all Leica
batteries with 5- pole plugs for the
charger will be given priority over
camcorder batteries with 3 contacts.
Charging on the other hand is always
carried out before discharging.
Battery charging
1. Connect charger.
2. Connect battery.
3. Ensure that the battery lamp is
showing a continuous green light.
The battery is now being charged.
If the battery lamp gives another
signal after the battery has been
connected, see "Illuminated Dis-
play".
4. The battery is fully charged when
the battery lamp flashes green (for
charge time ref. to "Technical
Data"; eg. for GEB121 after 2.5 to
3.5 h).
5. The battery can now be removed
for use or it may remain connected
so that it is available when
required.

11
Charger Professional Series GKL122-1.0.1en/ja English
Battery refreshing
This function is available for all Leica
standard batteries, for all Leica
batteries with 5-pin charger plugs and
for camcorder batteries having three
contacts.
The refreshing function consists of
discharging the battery fully and then
re-charging it quickly.
We recommend using the refreshing
function on a battery two to three
times if its capacity drops noticeably.
1. Connect charger.
2. Connect battery.
3. Disconnect the battery within 5
seconds from the charger and re-
connect to the same battery
connection within again five
seconds.
4. If the triangular battery lamp
flashes red, the battery is being
discharged (for charge time ref. to
"Technical Data").
5. When the battery is completely
discharged, it will be quickly
recharged automatically. The
battery lamp shows green.
6. The battery is fully charged when
the battery lamp flashes green.
Conservation of charge
If batteries which have been
connected are fully charged, they
may remain connected. Conservation
of charge takes place in sequence so
that the battery self-discharge which
takes place for technical reasons, is
compensated and the batteries are
always available for use with their
full capacity.

Problems
If the charger displays a
malfunction while a battery is
connected, it is best to connect
another battery for a short period to
determine whether the fault is in the
battery or in the charger. If the
problem cannot be rectified, please
contact the service workshop.
Please also check:
• Is the cable making a firm contact?
Replace the cable if necessary.
• Has the vehicle's electrical system
sufficient energy (voltage, fuse in
vehicle cable, battery charge)
• Is voltage supplied to the mains
socket?
Tips
Let batteries in the
instrument run down as far
as possible. This avoids the
"memory effect" with NiCd batteries.
• Batteries should always be
charged in a vehicle while the
motor is running.
• In order to utilise the battery's
capacity to the full, new batteries
should be fully charged and
discharged three to five times.
• With adapter plate GDI121 (item
no. 667 124) you can charge four
Leica standard batteries (GEB 111
/ GEB121).
• Charging times on adapter plate
GDI121 can be up to 1 hour
shorter compared with the charger
(due to internal heating up of
charger)
During the charging process
avoid fast increasing of
ambient temperature, eg. by
exposure to sunlight of chargers and
batteries.
Fast increasing of ambient
temperature could result in an early
end of charging with reduced battery
capacity.
