TheLenovo®ThinkServer®RemoteManagementModuleworksasanintegratedsolutiononyourserver
system.Basedonanembeddedoperatingsystem,theLenovoThinkServerRemoteManagementModule
add-oncardprovidesbothexceptionalstabilityandpermanentavailabilityindependentofthepresentstate
oftheserver’soperatingsystem.Asasystemadministrator,youcanusetheLenovoThinkServerRemote
ManagementModuletogainlocation-independentremoteaccesstorespondtocriticalincidentsand
toundertakenecessarymaintenance.
DesignedtoworkwiththeBaseboardManagementController(BMC),thissmallform-factormezzaninecard
enablesservercontrolviaabuilt-inWebConsolefromanywhere,anytime.
ThisUserGuidedescribeshowtousetheLenovoThinkServerRemoteManagementModule(hereinafter
referredtoasRemoteManagementModule).Itprovidesanoverviewofthefeaturesofthemoduleand
instructionsonhowtosetupandoperatetheRemoteManagementModule.
Targetaudience
ThisGuideisintendedforsystemtechnicianswhoareresponsibleforinstalling,troubleshooting,upgrading,
andrepairingtheRemoteManagementModule.Asasystemadministrator,youcanuseittoworkonthe
RemoteManagementModuletogainlocation-independentremoteaccesstorespondtocriticalincidents.

•Hazardousconditions,devicesandcables:Hazardouselectricalconditionsmaybepresenton
power,telephone,andcommunicationcables.Turnofftheserveranddisconnectthepowercord,
telecommunicationssystems,networks,andmodemsattachedtotheserverbeforeopeningit.Otherwise,
personalinjuryorequipmentdamagecanresult.
•Electrostaticdischarge(ESD)andESDprotection:ESDcandamagediskdrives,boards,andother
parts.WerecommendthatyouperformallproceduresinthischapteronlyatanESDworkstation.Ifone
isnotavailable,providesomeESDprotectionbywearinganantistaticwriststrapattachedtochassis
ground—anyunpaintedmetalsurface—onyourserverwhenhandlingparts.
•ESDandhandlingboards:Alwayshandleboardscarefully.TheycanbeextremelysensitivetoESD.
Holdboardsonlybytheiredges.Afterremovingaboardfromitsprotectivewrapperorfromtheserver,
placetheboardcomponentsideuponagrounded,staticfreesurface.Useaconductivefoampadif
availablebutnottheboardwrapper.Donotslideboardoveranysurface.
•Installingorremovingjumpers:Ajumperisasmallplasticencasedconductorthatslipsovertwo
jumperpins.Somejumpershaveasmalltabontopthatyoucangripwithyourngertipsorwithapairof
neneedlenosedpliers.Ifyourjumpersdonothavesuchatab,takecarewhenusingneedlenosed
plierstoremoveorinstallajumper;gripthenarrowsidesofthejumperwiththepliers,neverthewide
sides.Grippingthewidesidescandamagethecontactsinsidethejumper,causingintermittentproblems
withthefunctioncontrolledbythatjumper.Takecaretogripwith,butnotsqueeze,thepliersorother
toolsyouusetoremoveajumper,oryoumaybendorbreakthepinsontheboard.

theRemoteManagementModuleconnectoronLenovoserverboards,itprovidesanincreasedlevelof
manageabilityoverthebasicservermanagementavailabletotheserverboard.Itworksasanintegrated
solutiononyourserversystem.

TheRemoteManagementModuleadd-oncardoffersconvenient,remoteKVMaccessandcontrolviaLAN
orInternet.Itcaptures,digitizes,andcompressesvideoandtransmitsitwithkeyboardandmousesignals
toandfromaremotecomputer.RemoteaccessandcontrolsoftwarerunsintheintegratedBaseboard
ManagementController,utilizingexpandedcapabilitiesprovidedbytheRemoteManagementModule
hardware.
