Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
To avoid a shock hazard:
• Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this
product during an electrical storm.
• onnect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet.
• Ensure that all power cord connectors are securely and completely plugged into receptacles.
• onnect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product.
• When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
• Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage.
• Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems before you
open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.

Statement 2
DANGER
Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced.
When replacing the lithium coin cell battery, use only the same or an equivalent type that is
recommended by the manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can explode if not properly
used, handled, or disposed of.
Do not:
• Throw or immerse into water
• Heat to more than 100° (212°F)
• Repair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.
Statement 3
AUTION:
When laser products (such as D-ROMs, DVD drives, fiber optic devices, or transmitters) are
installed, note the following:
• Do not remove the covers. Removing the covers of the laser product could result in exposure to
hazardous laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts inside the device.

• Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein
might result in hazardous radiation exposure.
DANGER
Some laser products contain an embedded lass 3A or lass 3B laser diode. Note the following:
Laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical
instruments, and avoid direct exposure to the beam.

AUTION:
The power control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the
electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To
remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the
power source.

AUTION:
If you install a strain-relief bracket option over the end of the power cord that is connected to the
device, you must connect the other end of the power cord to a power source that is easily accessible
in case it needs to be disconnected.

If the device has doors, ensure that you remove or secure the doors before moving or lifting the device
to protect against personal injury. The doors will not support the weight of the device.

AUTION:
Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached.
Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label
attached. There are no serviceable parts inside these components. If you suspect a problem with one
of these parts, contact a service technician.

Disconnect the hot-swap fan cables before removing the fan from the device to protect against
personal injury.

DANGER
Overloading a branch circuit is a potential fire hazard and a shock hazard under certain conditions. To avoid
these hazards, ensure that your system electrical requirements do not exceed branch current ratings at the
installation site.

AUTION:
Ensure that the rack is secured properly to avoid tipping when the server unit is extended on the rails.
Statement 14
AUTION:
Some accessory or option board outputs exceed lass 2 or limited power source limits. You must
install the appropriate interconnecting cabling in accordance with your local electrical code
requirements.
Statement 15
AUTION:
The power-control button on the device may put the device in standby mode instead of turning off the
device. In addition, the device might have multiple connections to dc power. To remove all electrical
current from the device, ensure that all connections to dc power are disconnected at the dc power
input terminals.
Statement 16
AUTION:
To reduce the risk of electric shock or energy hazards:
• This equipment must be installed by trained service personnel in a restricted-access location, as
defined by your local electrical code and the latest edition of IE 60950.
• The branch circuit overcurrent protection must be rated in accordance with local electrical code
requirements.
• Use 1.3 mm2 or 16 American Wire Gauge (AWG) copper conductor only, not exceeding 3 meters in
length.

• Torque the wiring-terminal screws to 1.4 newton-meters or 12 inch-pounds.
• Provide a readily available, approved and rated disconnect device in the field wiring.

A lithium ion battery is provided. To avoid possible explosion, do not burn the battery. Replace the
battery only with the Lenovo-approved part. Recycle or discard the battery as instructed by local
regulations.

Safety inspection guide
The purp se f this inspecti n guide is t assist y u in identifying p tentially unsafe c nditi ns. As each
machine was designed and built, required safety items were installed t pr tect users and service
technicians fr m injury. This guide addresses nly th se items. Y u sh uld use g d judgment t identify
p tential safety hazards due t attachment f n n-ThinkServer features r pti ns n t c vered by this
inspecti n guide.
If any unsafe c nditi ns are present, y u must determine h w seri us the apparent hazard c uld be and
whether y u can c ntinue with ut first c rrecting the pr blem.
C nsider these c nditi ns and the safety hazards they present:
• Electrical hazards, especially primary p wer (primary v ltage n the frame can cause seri us r fatal
electrical sh ck)
• Expl sive hazards, such as a damaged Cath de Ray Tube (CRT) m nit r r a bulging capacit r
• Mechanical hazards, such as l se r missing hardware
T determine whether there are any p tentially unsafe c nditi ns, use the f ll wing checklist at the
beginning f every service task. Begin the checks with the p wer ff, and the p wer c rds disc nnected.

1. Check exteri r c vers f r damage (l se, br ken, r sharp edges).

with.
Grounding requirements
Electrical gr unding f the server is required f r perat r safety and c rrect system functi n. Pr per
gr unding f the electrical utlet can be verified by a certified electrician.

hapter 2. Server setup road map
This chapter pr vides a general r ad map t guide y u thr ugh setting up y ur server.
The server setup pr cedure varies depending n the c nfigurati n f the server when it was delivered. In
s me cases, the server is fully c nfigured and y u just c nnect the server t the netw rk and an ac p wer
s urce, and then y u can turn n the server. In ther cases, the server needs t have hardware features
installed, requires hardware and firmware c nfigurati n, and requires an perating system t be installed.
Server setup procedure
The f ll wing list is a general pr cedure f r setting up y ur server:
1. Unpack the server package. See “In the b x” n page 7.
2. Install any required hardware r server pti n. See the related t pic in Chapter 5 “Replacing hardware”
n page 53.
3. C nnect the Ethernet cable and p wer c rds t the server. See “Rear view f the server” n page 17 t
l cate the c nnect rs.
4. Turn n the server t verify perati n. See “Turning n the server” n page 5.
5. Review the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Basic Input Output System (BIOS) settings and
cust mize as needed. See “Using the Setup Utility pr gram” n page 37.
6. C nfigure RAID and install the perating system and basic drivers. See “Using the ThinkServer
EasyStartup pr gram” n page 43 and “C nfiguring RAID” n page 45.
7. Install any additi nal drivers needed f r added features. Refer t the instructi ns that c me with the
hardware pti n.
8. C nfigure Ethernet settings in the perating system by referring t the perating system help. Y u can
skip this step if the perating system was installed using the ThinkServer EasyStartup pr gram.
9. Check f r firmware updates. T update the firmware, d ne f the f ll wing:
• G t http://www.len v .c m/drivers and f ll w the instructi ns n the Web page t check f r the
latest level f firmware, such as the BIOS updates and device drivers.
• Use the Firmware Updater pr gram.
10. Install ther applicati ns. Refer t the d cumentati n that c mes with the applicati ns that y u want t
install.
Turning on the server
The server can be turned n in ne f the f ll wing ways:
• After y u finish unpacking and setting up the server, c nnect it t an ac p wer s urce. Press the p wer
butt n n the fr nt panel t turn n the server. See “Fr nt panel” n page 15. The server needs ab ut 90
sec nds f r the ThinkServer Management M dule (TMM, als kn wn as BMC) t initialize whenever y u
c nnect the server t an ac p wer s urce. If y u press the p wer butt n n the fr nt panel during this
peri d, the server will n t start immediately; it will start after the TMM initializati n finishes.
• Y u als can use the related TMM feature t turn n the server rem tely thr ugh the management LAN.
Turning off the server

The power control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the
electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To
remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the
power source.

rderly shutd wn f the perating system, the server turns ff aut matically. F r instructi ns n h w t
shut d wn y ur specific perating system, refer t the related d cumentati n r help system f r the

• Press the p wer butt n n the fr nt panel t start an rderly shutd wn f the perating system and turn
ff the server, if y ur perating system supp rts this feature.
• If y ur server st ps resp nding and y u cann t turn it ff, press and h ld the p wer butt n n the fr nt
panel f r f ur sec nds r m re. If y u still cann t turn ff the server, disc nnect all p wer c rds fr m the
server.
• Y u als can use the related TMM feature t rem tely turn ff the server thr ugh the management LAN.
• The server might turn ff as an aut matic resp nse t a critical system failure.
Notes:
• When y u turn ff the server and leave it c nnected t an ac p wer s urce, the server als can resp nd t
a rem te request t turn n the server. T rem ve all p wer fr m the server, y u must disc nnect the
server fr m the ac p wer s urce.
