USE RIGHT TOOL. Don't force small tool or attachment to do the job of a
heavy-duty tool. Don't use tool for purpose not intended.
DRESS PROPERLY. Don't wear looseclothing orjewelry. They can becaught
in moving parts. Rubber gloves and non-skid footwear are recommended
when working outdoors. Wear protective hair covering tocontain longhair.
USE SAFETY GLASSES. Also use face or dust mask if cutting operation is
dusty.
DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry tool by cordor yank
it
todisconnectfrom
receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil, and'sharp edges.
SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work. It's safer than using
your hand and
it
frees both hands to operate tool.
DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance
at
all times.
MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and clean for better and
safer performance. Follow instructionsfor lubricating and changing acces-
sories. Inspecttoolcordsperiodicallyandifdamaged, haverepaired by autho-
rized service facility. Inspect extension cords periodically and replace if
damaged. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.
DISCONNECTTOOLS. When not
in
use, beforeservicing, and when chang-
ing accessories, such as blades, bits, cutters.

REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form habit of checking to
see that keysand adjusting wrenches are removed from
tool
beforeturning
it
on.

in.

STAY ALERT. Watch what you are doing, usecommon sense. Don't operate
tool when you are tired.

CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the tool, a guard or other
part that is damaged should be carefully checkedto determine that

will
operate properly and performitsintended function. Check for alignment of
moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage
of
parts, mounting, and
any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part
that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized
service center unless otherwise indicated elsewhere
in
this instruction
manual. Havedefective switches replacedbyauthorizedservicecenter. Don't
use tool if switch does not turn
it
on and off.
19.
GUARD AGAINST ELECTRIC SHOCK. Prevent body contact withgrounded
surfaces. For example; pipes, radiators, ranges, refrigerator enclosures.

REPLACEMENTPARTS. When servicing, useonly identicalreplacementparts.
VOLTAGE WARNING: Before connectingthe toolto
a
powersource (receptacle,
outlet, etc.) be sure the voltage supplied is the same as that specified on the
nameplateof the tool. A power source with voltage greater than that specified
for the tool can result in SERIOUS INJURYtothe user
-
as well as damage to
the tool. If in doubt, DO NOT PLUG IN THE TOOL. Using a power source with
voltage less than the nameplate rating is harmful to the motor.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES

not leave the tool running. Operate the tool only when hand-held.

This tool has not been waterproofed,
so
do not use water on the workpiece
surface.

Installingor removingabrasive paper
CAUTION
:
Always be sure that the tool
is
switched off and unpluggedbeforeinstallingor removing
the paper.
Press the clamper. Insertthe paper end into
the clamper, aligning the paper edges even
and parallel with the sides of the base.
Then release the clamper.
Repeat the same process for the other end
of the base, maintaining the proper paper
tension.
CAUTION
:
After inserting the paper, make sure the teeth of the clamper hold
it
securely. Otherwise
the paper will be looseand subject to slippage, resultinginunevensanding operation.
Switchaction
To start the tool, simply pull the trigger.
Release
the trigger to stop. Forcontinuous
operation, pull the trigger and then push in
the lock button.
To
stopthe tool from the
locked position, pull the trigger fully, then
release
it.
CAUTION:
Before plugging in the tool, always check to
see
that the trigger switch actuates properly
and returnstothe "OFF" positionwhen released.
Operation
Hold the tool firmly. Turn the tool on and
wait until
it
attains full speed. Then gently
place the tool on the workpiece surface. A
finishing sander
is
generally used to remove
only
a
small amount of material
at
a
time.
Since the quality of the surface
is
more im-
portantthan the amount of stock removed,
do not bear down on the tool. Keep the
base flush with the workpiece
at
all
times.
Excessive
pressure may damage the paper
and shorten tool life.
You can put
a
high polish on furniture or other fine surfaces by using
a
clothunder the
tool.

When you wish to perform clean sanding
Place the punch plate (optional accessory)
operation,proceed
as
follows:
Punch
plate
over the paper
so
that the guide of the
punch plate
is
flush with the sides of the
base. Then press
the
punch plate tomake
holes inthe paper.
Removethe
cap
from thedust spout on your tool and connect
a
vacuum cleanerto your
toolusing
a
hose (optionalaccessory).Be sure to read,understand and follow all instruc-
tions and warnings contained in the vacuum cleaner’s instruction manual.

Always be sure that the tool
is
switched off and unpluggedbefore attempting to perform
inspectionor maintenance.
To maintain product SAFETY and RELlABlLITY, repairs, carbon brush inspection and
replacement, any other maintenance or adjustment should be performed by Makita
Authorized or FactoryService Centers, always using Makita replacementparts.
