Mother's milk is the best nutrition for babies. Symphony gives you and your baby optimal
support duringthe breastfeedingperiod. The attractive breastpump for hospitals and
home rental is especially suitable for long-term and frequent pumping and encourages
milk production in the long term, too.
Indications For Use
The Symphony Breastpump is apowered breastpump:
•Tobeused by lactating women to express and collect milk from their breast.
•Toinitiate and maintain amilk supply as well as collect breastmilk at work or during
other absences from the baby.
•Toinitiate and maintain amilk supply if direct breastfeeding is not possible.
•Torelieve engorgement.
•For use in hospitals or home rental.

When using electrical devices, basic safetyprecautionsshouldalwaysbefollowed, including
the following:
Read all instructions beforeuse.
•Use the product only for its intended use as described in this instruction manual.
•Only use the power cord that comes with the Symphony Breastpump.
•Make sure the voltage of the device is compatible with the power source.
•Plug the power cord into the Symphony Breastpump first and then into wall socket.
•Always unplug electrical devices immediately after using.
•The product should never be left unattended when plugged into apower source.
•Separation from the mains is only assured through the disconnection of the power cord
from the wall socket outlet.
•Keep the power cord away from heated surfaces.
•Never operate an electrical device if it has adamaged power cord or plug, if it is not
working properly,ifithas been dropped or damaged, or dropped into water.
•Keep appliance dryand do not place in direct sunlight.
•Donot get the product wet.
•Donot use while bathing or showering.
•Donot place in or drop pump unit into water or other liquid and do not shower
the diaphragm area.
•Donot spray or pour liquid directly onto the pump.
•Donot store or use this product where it can fall or be pulled into atub or sink.
•Donot reach for any electrical device if it has fallen into water.Unplug immediately.
•Use Medela original accessories only.
•Check pump kit components for wear or damage.
•The pump kit is apersonal care item and is not to be shared between mothers without
proper sterilization to prevent the risk of cross-contamination.
•Pump only with the motor in an upright position.
•Donot use while sleeping or overly drowsy.
•Supervision is necessarywhen this product is used in the vicinity of children.
•Ifproblems or pain occur,consult your lactation consultant or physician.
•Equipment not suitable for use in the presence of aflammable anaesthetic mixture
with air or with oxygen or nitrous oxide.
•Portable and mobile radio frequency communications equipment can affect
the Symphony Breastpump.
•The Symphony Breastpump needs special precautions regarding EMC (Electromagnetic
compatibility) and needs to be installed and put into service according to the EMC
information provided in these instructions for use.
•There are no user-serviceable parts inside the Symphony.Donot attempt to repair
the Symphony Breastpump yourself.

release button on top of the Symphony
and lift up the handle to get access to

breastpump diaphragm. To ensurepro-
per fit, be suretocenter the membrane
caps' tube port directly over the crevice
on the pump housing. Make surethat
the membrane clicks into place and is
flush with surrounding surface.

Operation

Electrical
Power the Symphony (or charge its battery if included) by connecting the socket in the
back of the pump and the power cordtoastandardelectrical outlet.
Battery optional (built-in rechargeable battery)
Charge Symphony pump batteries for 12 hours upon receipt.
Optimal battery life is achieved when:
•Batteries arenot fully drained on aregular basis
•Pump is allowed to charge when not in use
When not in use for alengthy period, recharge batteries for 12 hours every two months.
Pumping time (full battery) =approx. 60minutes
Charging time (empty battery) =12hours
Pump may be used while charging.
Pumping

Be comfortably seated and relax. Use afootrest, when pumping or when feeding your
baby.Elevating your feet puts you into proper sitting position to avoid stress on the lower
back and perineum.

Center your breastshield over your nipple.
•Donot tilt or overfill bottles when pumping.
•Take care not to kink tubing while pumping.

Switch on the breastpump by pressing the On/Offbutton.
The pump will begin pumping in the StimulationPhase.
Adjust the vacuum during pumping to your comfort level by
turning the one-knob control clockwise (increase) or counter-
clockwise (decrease).

Once your milk starts to flow or you sense milk ejection, press
the let-down button to switch to the Expression Phase .
If you do not press the let-down button, the pump will auto-
matically switch to the Expression Phase after two minutes.
Set your Maximum Comfort Vacuum™ which is the
highest vacuum you can use and still feel comfortable (this
is different for every mother). To find your Maximum Comfort
Vacuum increase vacuum until pumping feels slightly un-
comfortable (not painful), then decrease slightly.
Research has shown that you will pump moreefficiently
–meaning get moremilk in less time –when pumping at
Maximum Comfort Vacuum™ in the Expression Phase.
Once finished pumping, switch offthe breastpump, unplug
it, and disassemble the pump kit items. Close the bottle and
storeitfor later use.
Use bottle stand to prevent tip over.

SwitchtoExpressionPhase
The pump will switchtoExpressionPhase by one of
two ways:
1) automatically,after the two minute Stimulation Phase
is complete, or
2) manually,bypressing the let-down button.
The vacuum setting will be indicated by bars on the LCD
Display.
Vacuum Setting
When switching from Stimulation to Expression, the pump
automatically increases the vacuum setting by adding three
bars to the last Stimulation setting.
This vacuum level can be increased and decreased by using
the one-knob control.
Stimulation Phase
The initial vacuum setting will be indicated by one drop on
the LCD Display.Stimulation Phase is limited to two minutes.
Symphony®Program Cards

Thereare two versions of the Symphony Program Card:
•The Original Symphony Program Card(phase-out in the course of 2007)
•The new Symphony Program Card2.0(available as of mid 2007)
The following information is an explanation for either card.
Original Symphony Program Card
LCD Display
When powered offand connected to wall socket, the LCD
Display will indicate «Mains».
When batteries areused to power the Symphony,the LCD
Display will remain blank until powered on.

Symphony Program Card2.0
The Symphony Program Card2.0is the second generation program card. It is pro-
grammed to operate 2-Phase Expression similar to the Original Symphony Program Card.
Additionally,thereare some new features available:

LCD Display indicates Program CardName
The Symphony Program Card2.0displays the name of the
card«Symphony 2.0»onthe LCD Display when the pump is
powered offand connected to wall socket.
When batteries areused to power the Symphony,the LCD
Display will remain blank until powered on.
Stimulation Phase starts with Minimum Vacuum
Setting
The initial vacuum setting is visually indicated with three
drops on the LCD Display.Stimulation Phase is limited to
two minutes.
Switch to Expression Phase
The pump will switch to Expression Phase by one of two ways:
1) automatically,after the two minute Stimulation Phase is
complete, or
2) manually,bypressing the let-down button.
Ramp-up Vacuum Transition from Stimulation
to Expression Phase
When switching from Stimulation to Expression Phase, the
Symphony Program Card2.0increases the vacuum setting
by adding three bars to the last Stimulation setting in astair-
stepped fashion. The three additional bars and increased
vacuum setting occur gradually over a4-second period.
The ramp-up transition eliminates potential discomfort of
an immediate vacuum setting increase.

Switching back and forth between Stimulation and Expression Phase by using
the Let-Down Button
With the Symphony Program Card2.0,the let-down button can also be used to switch back
from Expression to Stimulation Phase (for moreinformation on this featuresee page 11
«Addressing Special Needs»). On the LCD Display the vacuum setting will be indicated by
drops in the Stimulation Phase and by bars in the Expression Phase.
Program Remembers Last Stimulation Vacuum Setting
When switching back to Stimulation Phase, the Symphony Program Card2.0remembers
the last Stimulation Phase vacuum setting prior to switching to Expression Phase and
returns to this setting in Stimulation Phase.

The Symphony Program Card2.0includes afeaturethat allows mothers to switch back
to the Stimulation Phase by pressing the let-down button. Some mothers find this feature
beneficial in addressing the following special needs:
No milk ejection occurs in the first two minutes of the Stimulation Phase
If your milk ejection has not occurred in the first two minutes of the Stimulation Phase and
the pump automatically switches to the Expression Phase, press the let-down button
once to returntothe Stimulation Phase. If you have not achieved amilk ejection after two
consecutive Stimulation Phases, take abreak, relax and try again in 15-30minutes.
Engorgement
If, due to engorgement, you areexperiencing difficulties breastfeeding or expressing milk,
careful use of the Stimulation Phase may help to provide some relief. If your milk ejection
does not occur in the first two minutes of the Stimulation Phase and the pump automati-
cally switches to the Expression Phase, press the let-down button to returntothe
Stimulation Phase. Repeat this process until your milk ejection occurs. After milk ejection you
may find it beneficial to remain in the Stimulation Phase until enough milk has been expres-
sed so that the nipple and areola area arenot as hardand engorged. After initially draining
the breast to relieve the discomfort, follow up with breastfeeding or pumping in the
Expression Phase to adequately drain the breast. Although Medela strongly encourages
pumping in the Expression Phase after milk ejection at Maximum Comfort Vacuum for the
most effective removal of milk, it may be necessary to address temporary discomfort issues
by pumping in the Stimulation Phase.
If your engorgement condition persists or worsens, consult your physician or lactation
consultant.
SoreNipples
If, due to sorenipples, you areexperiencing discomfort while pumping in the Expression
Phase, careful use of the Stimulation Phase may help to provide some relief. Youcan
returntothe Stimulation Phase at any time by pressing the let-down button. Although
Medela strongly encourages pumping in the Expression Phase after milk ejection at
Maximum Comfort Vacuum for the most effective removal of milk, it may be beneficial to
address temporary discomfort issues by pumping in the Stimulation Phase.
If your sorenipple condition persists or worsens, consult your physician or lactation
consultant.

Cleaning and Hygiene

Important •Use drinking water quality for any of the following described
cleaning procedures.
•Clean parts immediately after use to avoid dry up of milk
residues and to prevent from growth of bacteria.
•Disassemble all parts prior to cleaning. Especially be sure
to remove the yellow valve head from the breastshield and
separate the white valve membrane from the valve head.
Cleaning in
hospitals
Cleaning at
home Follow these cleaning instructions unless you aretold otherwise by your healthcareprofessional.
Prior to first use and once daily
•Disassemble, wash and rinse all parts of your pump kit that
come in contact with the breast and milk (a+b+c+d+h+i+k).
•Place parts in asaucepan of sufficient capacity.
•Fill with cold water until the parts arewell covered. Optionally,
atea spoon of citric acid may be added to avoid abuild-up of
limescale.
•Heat it up and allow to boil for 5minutes.
•Remove from stove and drain water off.
•Dry parts with aclean towel.
Alternatively,the disassembled parts can be sanitized in top rack
of dishwasher or steam-sterilized.
Note: Food colorings may discolor components which will not
affect performance.
After each use
•Disassemble and handwash all parts of your pump kit that
come in contact with the breast and milk (a+b+c+d+h+i+k)
in warm, soapy water.
•Rinse in clear water.Dry parts with aclean towel.
The following cleaning instructions aregeneral recommendations
and may individually be adjusted based on the hospital's specific
directives and cleaning practices.

Tubing careInspect the tubing after each pumping session for condensation
and/or milk.
If condensation appears in the tubing
Let the pump run after you have completed pumping with tubings
attached for 1–2 minutes or until dry.
If milk gets into the tubing
If milk accidentally gets into the tubing turnoff the pump and unplug
from power source. Remove and clean the tubing according to the
instructions «Prior to first use and once daily». Shake water droplets
out and hang to air-dry.For faster drying, attach the tubing to pump
and run for 1–2 minutes or until dry.
Hints After cleaning, when parts arenot in use put in aclean zip lock
bag or storeinacontainer with lid. Alternatively,the parts can be
wrapped in aclean paper or cloth towel.
Important
It is recommended to provide each mother an own personal pump
set and to clean, disinfect and sterilize (e.g. autoclave) all compo-
nents after each use or,latest each time they arehanded over to
the next mother.Use by morethan one mother without adequate
sterilization may pose ahealth risk (e.g. risk of cross-contamination)
and voids the warranty.
Cleaning
Disassemble and thoroughly wash all parts in warm, soapy water.
Rinse in clear water.
Disinfecting
Disinfect all parts by washing in athermic washing machine
(at approx. 93° C).
Sterilizing
Prior sterilizing visually check parts if clean and intact. Sterilize all
parts by autoclaving at 134°C for 3(or 18) minutes or at 125°C for
15 –20minutes. Do not stack parts or apply external pressureto
avoid damages. Alternatively,the parts can be EO-sterilized
(Ethylene Oxide).
Hygiene •Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water beforetouching
the breast and pump parts.
•Avoid touching the inside of bottles and lids.
•Clean the breast and surrounding area with adamp cloth.
•Donot use soap or alcohol which can dry the skin and cause
cracked nipples.

Breastmilk Storage (For Healthy Term Babies)
•When freezing do not fill bottles/bags more than 3/4 full to allow space for expansion.
•Label bottles/bags with the date of pumping.
•Inorder to preserve the components of the breastmilk, thaw in the refrigerator overnight
or by holding the bottle/bag under running warm water (max. 37° C).
•Gently shake the bottle/bag to blend any fat that has separated.
•Donot thaw frozen breastmilk in amicrowave oven or in apan of boiling water
(danger of burning).

Disposal

The unit is made of various metal and plastics. Beforedisposal, the device is to be ren-
dered unusable and it must not be disposed of as unsorted municipal waste in accor-
dance with local regulations. Use your local returnand collection system for waste elec-
trical and electronic equipment (incl. batteries). Improper disposal may have harmful
effects in the environment and on public health.
Warranty

3-year warranty for the unit from the date of purchase, excluding pump set and accessories.
6months warranty for the batteries. The manufacturer is not liable for any damage or con-
sequential damage caused by incorrect operation, inappropriate usage or use by un-
authorized persons. Routine checks, servicing and battery exchange may only be carried
out by Medela authorized personnel.
