IMPORTANT
SAFEGUARDS
When using electrical devices, basic safety precautions should
always be followed, including the following:
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE
DANGER: To reduce the risk of electrocution:
1. Always unplug electrical devices immediately after using. Separation from the
mains is only assured through the disconnection of the plug and socket connection.
2. Do not use while bathing or showering.
3. Do not place in or drop motor unit into water or other liquid.
4. Do not reach for any electrical device if it has fallen into water. Unplug immediately.
5. Do not store or use this product where it can fall or be pulled into a tub or sink.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of burns, electrocution, fire or injury to persons:
1. The pump should never be left unattended when plugged into an electric outlet.
2. Use the pump only for its intended use as described in this manual.
3. Do not use accessory attachments not recommended by the manufacturer,
as this may cause hazards.
4. Never operate an electrical device if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is
not working properly, if it has been dropped or damaged, or if it has been
dropped into water.
5. Keep the cord and all components away from heated surfaces.
6. Do not use outdoors.
7.
Only use the electric cord that comes with the Lactina or Symphony
Breastpump.
8. The kits are personal care items and are not to be shared between mothers
without proper sterilization to prevent the risk of cross contamination.
9. The pump should be cleaned as needed with soapy water or Cavicide®
solution. Do not spray or pour liquid directly onto the pump.
10.
Supervision is necessary when this product is used in the vicinity of children.
11. Make sure the voltage of the device is compatible with the power source.
12. Pump only with the motor in an upright position.
13. Do not use while sleeping or overly drowsy.
14.
There are no user-serviceable parts inside the Lactina
®
or Symphony
®
Breastpump. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE LACTINA OR SYMPHONY
BREASTPUMP YOURSELF.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

Uses
•To initiate and maintain a milk supply as well as collect
breastmilk at work or during other absences from the
baby.
•To initiate and maintain a milk supply if direct breast-
feeding is not possible.
•To relieve engorgement. Single pumping with simultane-
ous massage is helpful to relieve engorgement.
Cleaning and Sterilization
Unless instructed otherwise by your health care provider.
Hygiene
Wash hands before touching breasts
or containers, and avoid touching the
inside of containers or lids.
Preparation
Follow these cleaning instructions unless you are told oth-
erwise by your healthcare professional. Prior to cleaning,
take apart all parts of your breastpump accessory kit. Be
especially sure to remove the yellow valve from the breast-
shield and separate the white membrane from the valve
prior to cleaning.
Prior To First Use
The Symphony sanitized or sterilized kit versions do not
require washing before first use.

This product’s kit is a single-user item unless properly
sterilized between users. Use by more than one user
without adequate sterilization may pose a health risk
and voids the warranty
.
IMPORTANT

To Sterilize in the Hospital:
All disassembled parts can be autoclaved to a maximum of
272° F for 3 minutes at 29 PSIG or 250° F for 15-20 min-
utes at 15 PSIG. If autoclaved membrane caps may require
more force to attach to pump.
To avoid damage during and immediately after sterilization:
•Sterilize parts without applying external pressure to
them.
•Allow parts to cool before applying external pressure.
If gas sterilization is used, residual testing is recommended
to determine the proper length of aeration.
To Sanitize at Home:
Disassemble, refer to diagram on page 6. Sanitize by boil-
ing for 10 minutes.
After each use:
•Disassemble and wash all parts that come in contact
with the breast and milk in warm soapy water.
•Rinse in clear water.
•Air-dry on clean towel and cover parts when not in use.
All parts may also be washed in top rack of dishwasher.
For Quicker Cleaning:
Medela offers Quick Clean™Micro-Steam™Bags for daily
kit disinfection.
Tubing Care:
Inspect tubing after each pumping session for condensa-
tion and or milk.

If condensation appears in tubing:
To eliminate condensation after you have completed pump-
ing, continue running the pump with the tubing(s) attached
for another 1-2 minutes or until dry, while you attend to
storing your pumped breastmilk.
If milk appears in tubing:
1. Turn off the pump and unplug from power source.
2. Remove and disassemble the tubing, protective
membrane and membrane cap. Wash in soapy water
then rinse in cold clear water.
3. Shake water droplets out and hang to air-dry. For
faster drying, attach tubings to pump and run pump
1-2 minutes or until dry, or pour a small amount of
isopropyl alcohol through the tubings to dry.
4. Make sure that valve membranes are undamaged and
clean. Replace if necessary.
5. Use a damp cloth to wipe the pump and the
diaphragm. Do not immerse the pump in water.
6. When components are completely dry, reassemble
breastpump and kit.
Important Battery Care
Charge Symphony®pump batteries for 12 hours upon receipt.
Pump may be used while charging. Optimal battery life is
achieved when:
•Batteries are not fully drained on a regular basis
•Pump is allowed to charge when not in use
If unable to charge regularly, charge for 12 hours every
2 months at minimum
Pumping time with a completely charged battery is approx-
imately 60 minutes.

Symphony®Assembly &
Operation Kit Assembly
1. Follow cleaning instructions on
pages 2-3.
2. Insert the small end of the
Breastshields into the small end of
the connectors. (Prior to cleaning,
separate these two pieces.)
3. Snap white membranes onto
yellow valves until membrane
lies completely flat. (Prior to
cleaning, separate these two
pieces.)
4. Push assembled valves
and membranes onto the
breastshield connector.
5. Screw containers onto the
breastshield connector.
6. Insert hard yellow ends of tubing
into openings in the breastshield
connector.
7. Assemble protective membranes
onto membrane caps. Push
triangular ends of tubing into the
small openings in the membrane
caps.

8. To unlock case, press the oval
release button on top of the
Symphony®Breastpump. Keeping
button depressed, lift up on the
handle to open case and access
pumping mechanisms.
9. Push membrane/cap into
place on pumping mechanism.
A “click” will be heard once
properly seated. To ensure
proper fit, be sure to center the
membrane caps’ tube ports
directly over the crevice on the
pump housing.
10. Power the Symphony
Breastpump (or charge its
battery if included) by connecting
the power cord to a wall outlet
and the socket in the back of
the pump.

Important Note: If you experience discomfort, contact your lactation
professional as you may need a larger breastshield or other advice. To

Symphony®Program Cards
The Symphony has the unique ability to be updated with
new clinical research as it becomes available. There are
two versions of the Symphony Card: The Symphony
Standard 2.0 Card and the Preemie+™Card. The following
information includes instructions for either card.
Symphony Standard 2.0 Card
The Symphony Standard 2.0 Card is the second gen-
eration card. It is programmed to operate the 2-Phase
Expression®technology. There are other important features
available with the Symphony Standard 2.0 Card:
1. Card Name Displayed
on LCD Display.
The Symphony Standard 2.0
Card displays the name of the
card (Symphony 2.0) on the
LCD display when the pump
is powered off and connected
to A/C power supply. When
batteries are used to power the
Symphony, the LCD Display will
remain blank until powered on.
2. Minimum Start Vacuum Setting.
The Symphony Standard 2.0
Card will start the pump in the
Stimulation Phase. The initial
vacuum setting when powering
on the pump is visually indicated
with 3 drops on the LCD screen.
The vacuum setting can be
increased or decreased by using
the Vacuum Regulator Knob.

3. Ramp-Up Transition from
Stimulation to Expression
Phase.
When switching from Stimulation
to Expression Phase, the
Symphony Standard 2.0 Card
increases the vacuum setting
by adding 3 bars to the last
Stimulation setting in a stair-stepped fashion. The
3 additional bars and increased vacuum setting
occur gradually over a 4-second period. The ramp-
up transition eliminates potential discomfort of an
immediate vacuum setting increase.
4. Use Let-Down Button to Switch
Back to Stimulation Phase.
The Symphony pump can switch
from Stimulation to Expression
Phase in one of two ways:
1) automatically after 2 minutes,
or 2) manually through pressing
the let-down button. With the
Symphony Standard 2.0 Card, the let-down button
can also be used to switch back to Stimulation Phase.
For more information on this feature, please review the
Symphony 2-Phase Pumping Protocol information in
this booklet.
Note: Stimulation Phase is always limited to two minutes. If milk ejection
occurs before the 2 minute Stimulation Phase is over, press the let-down
button and continue pumping in Expression Phase
5. Program Remembers Last
Stimulation Vacuum Setting.
When switching back to
Stimulation Phase, the Symphony
Standard 2.0 Card remembers
the last Stimulation Phase
vacuum setting prior to switching
to Expression Phase and returns to this setting in
Stimulation Phase.

Symphony®2-Phase Pumping Protocol
Maximum Comfort Vacuum™
Research has shown that you will pump more efficiently—
meaning get more milk in less time—when pumping at
Maximum Comfort Vacuum in the Expression Phase.
1. Begin in Stimulation Phase
First, start the pump by pressing
the on/off button. The pump will
immediately begin pumping in
Stimulation Phase of the 2-Phase.
2. Switch to Expression Phase
Once your milk starts to flow, or
you sense milk ejection, press the
let-down button to switch to the
Expression Phase for the most
effective pumping and removal
of milk. If you do not press the
let-down button, the pump will
automatically switch to the Expression Phase after two
minutes.
3. Setting your Maximum Comfort
Vacuum
Maximum Comfort Vacuum is
the highest vacuum you can use
and still feel comfortable; it is
different for every mom. To find
your maximum comfort vacuum,
increase the vacuum by turning
the Vacuum Regulator Knob clockwise until pumping
feels slightly uncomfortable—never painful. Then,
decrease the vacuum one bar by turning the knob
counterclockwise.

Symphony Standard 2.0 Card—
Addressing Special Needs
The Symphony Standard 2.0 Card includes a feature that
allows moms to switch back to the Stimulation Phase by
pressing the let-down button. Some moms find this feature
beneficial in addressing the following special needs. Please
note that the Stimulation Phase is always limited to two
minutes.
1. No milk ejection occurs in the first two minutes
of the Stimulation Phase
If your milk ejection has not occurred in the first two
minutes of the Stimulation Phase and the pump
automatically switches to the Expression Phase, press
the let-down button once to return to the Stimulation
Phase. If you have not achieved a milk ejection after
two consecutive Stimulation Phases, take a break, relax
and try again in 15-30 minutes.
2. Engorgement
If, due to engorgement, you are experiencing difficulties
breastfeeding or expressing milk, careful use of the
Stimulation Phase may help to provide some relief.
If your milk ejection does not occur in the first two
minutes of the Stimulation Phase and the pump
automatically switches to the Expression Phase, press
the let-down button to return to the Stimulation Phase.
Repeat this process until your milk ejection occurs.
After milk ejection you may find it beneficial to remain
in the Stimulation Phase until enough milk has been
expressed so that the nipple and areola area are not
as hard and engorged. After initially draining the breast
to relieve the discomfort, follow up with breastfeeding
or pumping and expressing in the Expression Phase to
adequately drain the breast. Although Medela strongly
encourages pumping in the Expression Phase after
milk ejection at Maximum Comfort Vacuum™for the
most effective removal of milk, it may be necessary to
address temporary discomfort issues by pumping in
the Stimulation Phase. If your engorgement condition

persists or worsens, consult your physician or lactation
consultant.
3. Sore Nipples
If, due to sore nipples, you are experiencing discomfort
while pumping in the Expression Phase, careful use
of the Stimulation Phase may help to provide some
relief. You can return to the Stimulation Phase at any
time by pressing the let-down button. Although Medela
strongly encourages pumping in the Expression Phase
after milk ejection at Maximum Comfort Vacuum™for
the most effective removal of milk, it may be beneficial
to address temporary discomfort issues by pumping
in the Stimulation Phase. If your sore nipple condition
persists or worsens, consult your physician or lactation
consultant.
Important Note: For the most effective pumping and removal of milk,
Medela strongly encourages pumping in the Expression Phase after milk
ejection at Maximum Comfort Vacuum™.
Symphony®Preemie
+
™Card
The Symphony Preemie+Card provides two programs
for breastpumping (the Preemie+1.0 program and the
Standard 2.0 program). The combination of the two pro-
grams has been clinically shown to allow mothers of pre-
mature infants to provide significantly greater milk output in
fewer minutes of pumping. The Preemie+1.0 program is
designed to get pump dependent mothers started breast-
pumping. Its new unique burst/pause pattern is clinically
shown to help mothers of premature infants initiate milk
flow as it mimics baby’s first sucking pattern after birth.
Initiation—Preemie
+
1.0
Important Note: You should only use the Preemie+1.0 program until you
achieve 3 consecutive pumping sessions, each totaling 20 mls. Once you
have achieved this, you should switch to the Standard 2.0 program.

1. When plugged in the name
reflects that both the Preemie+1.0
program and the Standard 2.0
program are on the pump. Press
On/Off to start pumping.
2. Center breastshields over
nipples.
3. Symphony displays “ for
Preemie+™”. If you desire
to start the Symphony
Preemie+1.0 program, you
should press the drop or
“let-down” button. This is
displayed for 5-10 seconds.
4. “Start Preemie+” is displayed.
5. After a 5 second delay, 1 drop
will be displayed. You can
now pump with the Symphony
Preemie+1.0 program. The
pumping session lasts for 15
minutes. You should use it for
the entire 15 minute duration.
2-Phase Expression®—
Standard 2.0
The Standard 2.0 program should
be started once 3 consecutive pumping sessions, each
totaling 20 ml, have been achieved. Again, the combina-
tion of the two programs has been clinically shown to allow
mothers of premature infants to provide significantly greater
milk output in fewer minutes pumping.

stimulation for another let-down
or did not achieve let-down
after 2 minutes, simply press
the let-down button to return to
stimulation for another 2-minute
cycle.

Storing Breastmilk
Check with your hospital for specific storage instructions.
When freezing, do not fill containers more than 3/4 full to
allow space for expansion. Label containers with the date
of pumping.
Defrosting/Warming
•You can use the Medela®Waterless Milk Warmer™
(if available).
•You can thaw breastmilk in the refrigerator for up to 24
hours. Do not refreeze.
Important Note: If the temperature in the room, car or outdoors exceeds
77° F / 25° C, chill milk immediately to preserve freshness.

Caution:
•Do not thaw frozen breastmilk in a microwave or in a
pan of boiling water.
•Never microwave breastmilk. Microwaving can cause
severe burns to baby’s mouth from hot spots that devel-
op in the milk during microwaving. Microwaving can also
change the composition of breastmilk.
•If adding expressed breastmilk to a container of already
frozen breastmilk, make sure to add a lesser amount
than the already frozen amount.
Troubleshooting
If There Is Low or No Suction
•Make sure all connections of kit and breastpump are
secure.
•If using a unit with a battery, make sure the battery
is charged.
•Make sure membrane is lying flat against valve head.
Refer to the assembly instructions.
•Make sure the hard yellow ends of the tubing fit securely
into breastshield connectors and the other ends into the
ports on the pump connector or membrane caps.
