PREFACE
PIntroduction
Thank you for purchasing the Mediatrix 1104 from Mediatrix Telecom,
Inc.
This manual illustrates some of the various call processes the
Mediatrix 1104 supports. It also describes how to make and receive
calls, as well as how to use the services the Mediatrix 1104 offers.
Intended Audience This manual provides all the information needed to use the Mediatrix
1104. It is intended for end-users that will use the product on a regular
basis.
Before you Begin This manual describes how to use the Mediatrix 1104 to make and
receive calls. It assumes that your Mediatrix 1104 has been properly
set up by your system administrator. If you need to install and configure
the Mediatrix 1104 yourself, please refer to the Administration Manual
provided with the unit or contact your system administrator.
SCN vs PSTN In Mediatrix Telecom, Inc.’s and other vendor’s documentation, the
terms SCN and PSTN are used. A SCN (Switched Circuit Network) is
a general term to designate a communication network in which any
user may be connected to any other user through the use of message,
circuit, or packet switching and control devices. The Public Switched
Telephone Network (PSTN) or a Private Branch eXchange (PBX) are
examples of SCNs.
Related
Documentation
In addition to this Manual, each document set of the Mediatrix 1104
includes the following:

Mediatrix 1104 parameters. It is intended for a network
administrator. The manual is not printed – it is located on the
Installation CD provided with the Mediatrix 1104.

Preface - Introduction User’s Manual (H.323 Version)
Mediatrix 1104 x
Overview The Mediatrix 1104 is an IP Telephony adaptor that connects up to four
(4) analog terminals to a LAN with access to an IP Network, allowing
high-quality, full duplex, audio/fax communication.
This version of the Mediatrix 1104 uses the H.323 protocol, which is a
standard for audio/video conferencing over networks.
Why use the
Mediatrix 1104?
The Mediatrix 1104 terminals drastically reduce
telecommunications costs, since calls are re-routed
through data networks instead of standard telephone
networks.
Overhead is minimal, because the Mediatrix 1104
terminals fully utilize your existing telecommunications
equipment and computer networks.
How does it
Work?
When an Internet telephony call is placed from one location to another,
the voice signals pass through the Mediatrix 1104 connected to the
handset in the caller’s area. They are compressed into data packets,
which are then diverted by the Mediatrix 1104 onto an IP/data network
such as a LAN, a WAN, or the public Internet. Upon reaching its
destination, the voice data is converted back into voice signals, then
fed into the corresponding telephone or fax machine.
The Mediatrix 1104 system utilizes technology that optimizes available
bandwidth, so users do not hear echoes, stops and starts, or annoying
clicks and pops. When traffic congestion is properly managed,
Mediatrix 1104 customers cannot tell that their conversation is being
carried over a packet network rather than the traditional PSTN.

Safety
Recommendations
To insure general safety follow these guidelines:
Do not open or disassemble this product.
Do not get this product wet or pour liquids into it.
Do not perform any action that creates a potential hazard
to people or makes the equipment unsafe.
Warning: Do not connect the LAN port directly to the Public
Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to an off premise application,

CHAPTER
1Making Calls with the Mediatrix
1104
Once your network administrator has properly set up the Mediatrix
1104 configuration settings, you can dial any number on your phones
or faxes (which are connected to the Mediatrix 1104) and place the call.
Should you encounter any calling problems, please discuss it with your
administrator.
Call Processes The following examples illustrate some of the various calling processes
the Mediatrix 1104 supports. These processes can be adapted at will
to suit your needs and requirements.
The Mediatrix 1104 can communicate with the following devices:
Another terminal on the IP network such as the Mediatrix
1102 or Mediatrix 1104.
Any LAN H.323 endpoint on the IP network, for instance:
• a Soft Phone
• an IP phone directly connected to the IP network
A PSTN phone or fax. However, the Mediatrix 1104
would need to contact a PSTN gateway such as the
APA III-4FXO or Mediatrix 1204.
Note: When calling a phone or fax on another remote H.323
terminal, you can do so when registered to a gatekeeper or not.

The following example illustrates how to reach a phone or fax on
another Mediatrix 1104 terminal.
XPhone/Fax -> Mediatrix 1104 A -> Mediatrix 1104 B -> Phone/Fax
A user makes a call with the phone/fax connected to a Mediatrix 1104,
which in turn contacts another Mediatrix 1104, then reaches the
corresponding phone/fax.
Calls Involving
a Terminal and
an H.323
Endpoint
The following examples illustrate how a phone/fax connected to a
Mediatrix 1104 terminal can communicate with a LAN H.323 endpoint
on the IP network. Such endpoints could be:

Calls Without a
Gatekeeper
(Direct Calls)
If a FXS port of the Mediatrix 1104 or another terminal is not configured
to register with a gatekeeper, you can reach this FXS port by dialing
the IP address of the Mediatrix 1104 and the E.164 alias of this FXS
port.
Using an IP address
You can make a direct call by dialing the IP address of the terminal you
want to reach.
XTo make a direct call without a gatekeeper:
1. Dial “**” (IP address prefix).
2. Dial the numerical digits of the IP address and use the “*” for
the “.” of the IP address.
3. Dial “#”, then the telephone number (E.164 alias) of the
specific port you want to reach.
4. Dial “*” to terminate the IP address.
For example, let’s say you want to reach the telephone
connected to Port 3 of the Mediatrix 1104 with the IP address
192.168.0.23. The phone number assigned to Port 3 of this
Mediatrix 1104 is 1234. You must then dial the following
digits:

Note: This requires a LAN H.323 endpoint that allows to dial both an
IP address and an E.164 alias.
Note: This type of dialing can only be possible if the called FXS port
is not configured to register with a gatekeeper.
