1. Introduction
The SD2200v2 has been developed by improving and redesigning he
SD2100 echnology o include a number of new func ions. The new fea ures
of he SD2200v2 are: wo discrimina ion se ings, au oma ic ground
balance, audio boos con rol and au o uning con rol. Minelab is confiden
ha you will find his de ec or o be he fines available for he de ec ion of
me allic objec s in highly mineralised environmen s.
The SD2200v2 can see deeper han any conven ional de ec or available
on he marke . I s simple opera ion means ha he beginner and professional
will find i easy o use. I s superior abili y o cancel mineralisa ion using
au oma ic ground balance, as well as discrimina ing be ween ferrous and
non-ferrous i ems, makes his machine easier and fas er o use han ever
before. I will re-open old gold fields where mineralised, or ho  ground
and oo much rubbish have shielded many nugge s from he prying eyes
of o her de ec or opera ors.
Minelab has s udied he role ha magne ic soil chemis ry or so-called
mineralisa ion plays in obscuring nugge s and has developed Mul i-Period
Sensing (MPS) echnology. This echnology enables de ec ion of me allic
arge s, bo h large and small, even in he mos mineralised or ho es 
ground. The uni also provides an au oma ic ground balancing facili y, which
makes main aining op imum ground balance a simple opera ion in a varie y
of ground ypes.
Included in o he circui ry of he SD2200v2 are memory chips. These allow
he de ec or o remember he las ground balance and une se ings when
swi ched off. These memory func ions also assis in he accura e
discrimina ion of ferrous arge s in highly mineralised soil plus assis he
audio boos er buil in o he machine.
We rus you will find his de ec or a pleasure o use wi h i s s able and
effec ive ground balancing, superior dep h capabili y and sensi ivi y.
Since there may be a range of options available in this detector type,
equipment may vary according to the model or country of issue. Certain
descriptions and illustrations may differ (in this manual) from the exact

a) Place he wo armres halves (7) on ei her side of he shaf assembly
(6) and ensure ha he bol holes line up.
b) Slide wo nylon bol s (8) hrough he holes and screw nylon wing nu s
(9) on o he bol s wi h a couple of urns.
c) Slide he T sec ion on op of he con rol box (5) in o he assembled
armres (7) (wi h he de ec or s and a he rear). Tigh en he nylon
wing nu s (9) by hand.
d) Push he armres cover (10) over he assembled armres (7).
e) Ensure ha he lower shaf has wo eardrop rubber washers (19)
ins alled. They should always be full hickness and should be replaced
regularly as hey wear ou .
f) Push he lower shaf in o he moun ing bracke on he coil (1) and
ensure ha he coil decal faces he fron .
g) Align he holes in he coil moun ing bracke and he lower shaf . Push
a nylon bol (19) hrough he holes and fi a nylon wing nu (19) which
should be igh ened by hand. DO NOT over igh en as he coil housing
may be damaged.
h) Adjus he shaf leng h and coil angle for a comfor able posi ion. Minelab
recommends ha he shaf leng h be se o give a comfor able sweep
leng h of approxima ely 2 me res (see sec ion 7 for more de ails on
de ec ing echniques).
i) Wind he coil cable around he shaf and plug he coil connec or in o
he coil socke on he con rol box. Ensure ha he cable is firmly
a ached o he shaf wi hou s rain and canno move around, especially
near he coil. Fas en he cable o he shaf wi h he supplied VelcroTM
s raps (19). Leave enough slack a he bo om of he cable near he
coil o allow he coil angle o be adjus ed wi hou placing s rain on he
coil cable. If he cable is able o move around, especially near he coil,
i will be seen by he de ec or and cause random noises, which can
be very confusing.

Off before connec ing or disconnec ing he coil.

he knuckle on he shaf o ake some of he weigh when prospec ing.
An adjus able hand s rap on he handle allows you o relax and flex
your fingers wi hou pu ing he de ec or down.

4. Control Box
4.1 Rear Panel Controls
4.1.1 Power Switch
The Power swi ch con rols he power supply from he ba ery o he con rol
box. Always swi ch he de ec or Off before connec ing or disconnec ing
he coil or ba ery, and when no in use.
4.1.2 Channel Switch Ch1, Ch2, Both)
The Channe swi ch selec s he channel used for searching: Ch1, Ch2 or
Both. Searching is usually done in he Both posi ion which gives he
maximum sensi ivi y o he grea es range of arge s. When de ec ing in
highly noisy ground, he selec ion of Ch1 ra her han Both migh improve
he s abili y of he hreshold. However, sensi ivi y o cer ain ypes of arge s
is reduced when using only Ch1 and is no recommended.
4.1.3 Threshold
The Thresho d is used o adjus he loudness of background sound. Minelab
recommends a sof audible headphone signal which is comfor able o lis en
o for ex ended periods.
4.1.4 Boost Switch Shallow, N, Deep)
The Boost swi ch can be used o enhance he signals produced by differen
ypes of arge s.
In he Sha ow posi ion, signals from small arge s close o he surface of
he ground will be amplified, allowing easier de ec ion of such arge s. This
op ion is bes sui ed for quie ground. For normal de ec ing condi ions use
he N posi ion which responds o all signals wi hou boos ing. The Deep
posi ion is recommended when looking for big arge s a grea er dep h in
noisy ground. In his mode random soil signals are smoo hed, making
small changes in he audio signal from large deep arge s easier o hear. I
may, however, mask some signals from very small arge s near he surface.

4.1.5 Tune
The Tune con rol is used o lower he effec s of elec romagne ic in erference
from sources such as power lines, radio ransmi ers and o her me al
de ec ors. The Tune con rol is engaged by pressing he push bu on swi ch.
If elec romagne ic in erference is experienced when using he de ec or,
simply press he Tune bu on once o au oma ically selec he bes de ec ion
frequency.
4.1.6 Tone
The Tone con rol can be adjus ed o sui an individuals hearing by changing
he pi ch of he background hreshold one.

4.2 Front Panel Controls
4.2.1 Ground Balance Mode Fixed or Tracking)
To ge he bes from your SD2200v2, i is impor an o know how differen
ground condi ions affec he de ec ing process. Ground con ains no only
sand, bu also many differen chemicals, minerals and sal s. These ex ra
componen s are referred o as groundmineralisa ion. This ground
mineralisa ion will of en produce a sound from he de ec or, known as
ground noise.
The SD2200v2 has he abili y o cancel ou he effec s of ground
mineralisa ion so ha i minimises ground noise, while re aining maximum
sensi ivi y o me al arge s. Cancelling ou he effec s of ground
mineralisa ion is referred o as ground balancing. This ensures ha
welcome signals from objec s such as gold are no confused wi h
unwelcome ground noise. The SD2200v2 has au oma ic ground balance
which adjus s o minimise he effec s of ground mineralisa ion when se in
Tracking mode.
4.2.2 Iron Discriminate Switch Disc, All Metal, Disc + ID)
This swi ch allows you o selec be ween simple discrimina ion
(Discmode) and discrimina ion wi h one iden ifica ion (Disc+IDmode),
or o urn off he discrimina ion al oge her (A Meta mode). In he case of
A Meta mode, he de ec or will give varying volume and pi ch signals bu
his informa ion does no indica e he ype of me al in he objec found. In
Disc mode, a s rong signal from a ferrous (iron) objec will cause he
hreshold o be blanked or silenced.
In Disc+ID mode, a s rong signal from a ferrous objec will cause he
hreshold o be blanked, jus as i does in Disc mode. In addi ion, a signal
of medium s reng h will rigger he ID mode. In his mode, non-ferrous
objec s usually produce a one wi h a s eady pi ch while a ferrous objec
will usually produce a one wi h a varying pi ch. Repea ed sweeps across
he arge migh be required o confirm whe her he one is s eady or varying.
No e, however, in his mode some non-ferrous objec s can also produce a
one wi h varying pi ch, making he opera or more likely o mis ake a
non-ferrous objec for a ferrous objec . This mode of discrimina ion should
no be rus ed un il he opera or has sufficien experience wi h lis ening o
he ones produced and comparing hem wi h he objec s de ec ed.

If he signals are oo weak for accura e discrimina ion in ei her of he
discrimina ing modes, he de ec or will re urn o he All Me al mode signal.
While in he Disc + ID mode, a signal which is oo s rong o be discrimina ed
will produce a rapidly pulsing signal wi h cons an pi ch. This is called an
overload signal. A arge producing his sound should no be in erpre ed as
being a ferrous arge bu be inves iga ed.
4.2.3 Discrimination Level Adjust
The discrimina ion Leve Adjust gives he opera or he abili y o selec he
sensi ivi y and likelihood of a arge being ferrous or non-ferrous. The same
con rol also affec s how he de ec or recognises mineral effec s in he
ground as opposed o me al arge s, when ground racking.

. Operation
These ins ruc ions can be followed by opera ors who are familiar wi h he
workings and general erminology of de ec ors. However, Minelab
recommends ha as he SD2200v2 has new fea ures and some of he
func ions can differ from similar func ions of o her de ec ors, all opera ors
should read he Opera ing Ins ruc ions in sec ion 5.2.
5.1 Quick Start Instructions
a) Swi ch he Power swi ch o On.
b) Se he Thresho d con rol so ha sound can be heard in he
headphones.
c) Hold he de ec or a wais heigh wi h he shaf horizon al, so ha he
coil is ver ical. Keeping he coil ver ical, slowly move i around your
body hrough a half-circle un il he noise from in erference is loudes .
Hold his posi ion, keeping he coil mo ionless, and push he Tune bu on
once o s ar uning func ion. Tuning akes approxima ely one minu e.
A series of hree beeps indica es ha he bes frequency has been
selec ed.
d) Ro a e he Tone con rol o produce a hreshold pi ch ha sui s your
hearing.
e) Se he Channe swi ch o Both and he Audio/Boost swi ch o ei her
Sha ow for small shallow arge s, Deep for large, deep arge s or
N (Normal) for general de ec ing. (see sec ion 5.2.7)
f) Se he Iron Discriminate swi ch o he Disc posi ion and urn he
Leve Adjust o he middle of i s range.
g) Ground balance he de ec or by pulsing he coil up and down and,
while coil is in mo ion, flick he Ba ance Mode swi ch from Fixed
oTrack.
h) Your de ec or is now ready o be used.

5.2 Operating Instructions
This sec ion gives a de ailed descrip ion of how o opera e he SD2200v2
de ec or. The sec ion De ec or sounds con ains defini ions of some erms
wi h which he beginner should be acquain ed.
5.2.1 Detector Sounds
Threshold: This is he background sound produced by he de ec or. The
loudness of he background sound is se wi h he Thresho d con rol. Se
his so ha i can jus be heard. The pi ch of he hreshold sound can be
se o your preference using he Tone con rol.
Object signal: This is an abrup change of he pi ch and volume of he
hreshold sound. If he pi ch drops firs , hen rises as he coil is passed
over a arge , his generally (bu no always) indica es a small arge . If he
pi ch rises firs hen falls as he coil is passed over a arge , his generally
indica es a large arge . The pi ch varia ions can be differen when opera ing
in Disc + ID mode (see sec ion 5.2.9).
Ground noise: These are irregular noises ha are difficul or impossible
o pinpoin when moving he coil over he ground. They are caused by
changing chemis ry or mineralisa ion of he ground. While he de ec or is
in Tracking mode hese effec s are minimised.
5.2.2 Turning on the SD2200v2
Hold he coil away from he ground and me al objec s and swi ch he Power
swi ch o On.
No e: When he SD2200v2 is urned off, i saves impor an informa ion
(like las uning and ground balance se ings) in i s in ernal memory. If
de ec ion is s ar ed in he same spo , he user should no have o re- une
or re-ground balance he de ec or.
5.2.3 Set the Threshold Control
The Thresho d con rol should be se so ha background one is barely
audible. I is impor an o no e ha small surface objec s, as well as
large deep objec s, will produce very small changes in he hreshold
sound.
I is herefore impor an o se he Thresho d con rol correc ly o ensure
ha hese arge s are heard. We sugges ha you experimen wi h known
arge s o assis in se ing his and he o her con rols o sui your hearing.

5.2.4 Set the Tone Control
Carefully adjus he Tone con rol un il he hreshold sound is a a comfor able
pi ch for your hearing. No e ha in erpre a ion of he de ec ion signals involves
unders anding he difference be ween he rising and falling pi ch of he
hreshold. Again, we sugges you ake ime o experimen wi h known
arge s. Generally, se ing he Tone con rol a a high pi ch is more fa iguing
bu be er for iden ifying he fain es signals.
5.2.5 Set Tune Control
Wi h he SD2200v2 opera ing and he Thresho d con rol and Tone con rol
se :
· Hold he de ec or a wais heigh and he coil ver ical.
· Keeping he coil ver ical, slowly move i hrough a half-circle around
your body. Lis en for an increase in in erference as you move he coil.
When he in erference is loudes , s op moving he de ec or, hold i
mo ionless in ha posi ion and momen arily press he Tune bu on.
· The de ec or will now scan hrough i s range of ransmission
frequencies and au oma ically selec he frequency ha offers a
minimum of in erference. The end of he search (which akes abou
one minu e) is announced by hree beeps.
Impor an : While he de ec or is selec ing he preferred frequency, he coil
mus be kep mo ionless and clear of me al objec s.
· In some cases i may no be possible o remove he in erference
comple ely, bu he effec will be grea ly reduced.
· Once his con rol has been se for he loca ion you are in, i should no
require readjus men unless condi ions change or new in erference is
in roduced such as o her de ec ors opera ing in he vicini y.
5.2.6 Boost Switch Shallow, N, Deep)
This swi ch is used o selec he ype of sound made by he de ec or in
response o differen arge ypes. In he Sha ow posi ion, signals from
small arge s close o he surface are boos ed. This makes i easier o
hear hese arge signals. This se ing will also end o boos ground noise,
so his se ing is bes used in quie ground.

The Deep posi ion is recommended when looking for big arge s a dep h.
I smoo hes ou background sound and signals from small arge s, making
small changes in audio signal easier o hear.
For normal de ec ing condi ions use he N (normal) posi ion, which does
no boos any signals.
Selec whichever posi ion bes sui s he condi ions of he area you are
de ec ing. Each ime he swi ch is changed, he hreshold will also need o
be changed.
Ex ernal amplifiers may be used in addi ion o he boos swi ch, provided
hey have loudness limi ers buil in. This preven s loud signals becoming
unpleasan or dangerous o hearing.
5.2.7 Channel Switch Ch1, Both, Ch2)
In almos all circums ances, his swi ch should be se o Both. There are
very few circums ances in which i is beneficial o use ei her of he o her
se ings and o do so will reduce sensi ivi y o cer ain ypes of arge s.
The func ion of his swi ch is o selec which of he channels he de ec or
uses o genera e signals. Each of he channels has a sensi ivi y o i s own
range of arge ypes and sizes and each channel complemen s he o her.
When se o Both, he de ec or uses he bes channel for a par icular arge
o genera e he signal. I is for his reason ha Minelab recommends he
use of Both in almos all circums ances.
Selec ing Ch1 can help reduce ground noise from very noisy ground. I
can some imes s abilise he hreshold which will assis in hearing fain
arge s in such condi ions. As a resul of excessive ground noise, Minelab
does no recommend he use of Ch2 by i self.
Se ing he Channe swi ch o Ch1 does no affec he blanking of sounds
due o ferrous arge s while in Disc or Disc + ID. No e ha in general,
however, he signal pi ch and volume in Disc + ID mode for a arge will be
al ered.

5.2.8 Ground Balancing
Au oma ic ground balance is ac ive whenever he de ec or is se in he
Tracking mode. In his mode, he de ec or con inuously measures he effec
of ground mineralisa ion and au oma ically adjus s he ground balance o
compensa e.
Introduction
The SD2200v2 can be opera ed wi h au oma ic ground balance (Tracking
mode) or wi h he ground balance fixed (Fixed mode).
When he Ba ance Mode swi ch is swi ched o Fixed mode, he ground
balance is held a i s curren level.
When swi ched from Fixed o Tracking mode, he de ec or begins o
au oma ically ground balance hrough a process of wo s ages. The firs
s age is a very rapid adjus men o he ground mineralisa ion. This s age
las s for five seconds af er he swi ch is hrown. The second s age
con inues o adjus o he ground mineralisa ion, bu a a grea ly reduced
speed. Adjus men con inues for as long as he de ec or is kep in Tracking
mode.
I may be of use o repea he ground balance func ion when ground
condi ions change rapidly.
If he de ec or is swi ched o Fixed mode a any ime, i will no longer adjus
i self o changes in soil mineralisa ion, bu will s ay fixed a he level i las
reached while in Tracking mode.
While in Tracking mode, he de ec or usually s ops ground balancing when
i de ec s a arge . However, a weak arge signal may no be recognised
as a arge and, if he coil is repea edly passed over i , he arge could be
racked ou . I is herefore recommended o swi ch from Tracking o Fixed
when pinpoin ing a po en ial arge (see also Discrimina ion level con rol,
pages 21and22).
For bes resul s, use Tracking mode in areas wi h high ground noise. If he
ground mineralisa ion is only mild or wi h li le variabili y, searching in Fixed
and regularly rebalancing when required can have advan ages. People
who have used previous SD models mus no e ha se ing he Channe
swi ch does no affec he opera ion of he au oma ic ground balance.

Ground Balance Procedure
Ground balance bo h channels a once by se ing he Channe swi ch o
Both. Move he coil up and down be ween 20mm and 100mm above he
ground, and while moving he coil, se he Ba ance Mode swi ch from Fixed
o Tracking. The fas ground balance las s for only five seconds af er
swi ching o Tracking. Therefore, i is impor an o be moving he coil as
he swi ch is hrown.

Keep moving he coil un il all ground noise has s opped. A persis en signal
probably indica es a arge in he ground. In his case, move he coil o a
new loca ion and repea he procedure.
When here is no longer a change in he hreshold while he coil is being
raised and lowered, he de ec or is said o be ground balanced.
Once he de ec or is ground balanced, you can hen decide o de ec in
ei her Tracking or Fixed mode. If he ground is mineralised or variable, use
Tracking. If he ground is very mild, use Fixed mode and swi ch back o
Tracking emporarily if he hreshold becomes noisy. Do no es a arge
by swi ching o Tracking when he coil is above i .
5.2.9 Iron Discrimination
Discrimina ion is he abili y of a de ec or o dis inguish be ween differen
ypes of me al arge s and o assis he opera or in iden ifying a arge .
Some goldfields are li ered wi h junk, ha is, me al objec s which are of
li le value and are an annoyance o de ec or opera ors. The SD2200v2 is
capable of rejec ing a number of iron objec s while s ill de ec ing
non-ferrous me als. The abili y of he SD2200v2 o discrimina e ferrous
arge s means ha while working hese goldfields, much of he iron junk
can be ignored wi h li le fear of ignoring valuable arge s.

Iron Discrimination Switch
The main means of iron discrimina ion of he SD2200v2 is he blanking
(silencing) of he hreshold which occurs when he de ec or de ermines a
arge is of ferrous me al (magne ic). This form of iron discrimina ion

In Disc + ID mode, he opera or needs o moni or he pi ch of he signal as
he coil is swep over he buried me al arge . Mos ferrous arge s will
produce a changing pi ch signal as he coil is moved back and for h across
he arge . Non-ferrous arge s will produce a signal wi h a s eadier pi ch.
Some ferrous arge s, par icularly hin nail-like arge s, can also produce
s eady pi ches jus like non-ferrous arge s. Some gold will also produce a
variable pi ch, par icularly specimen gold or gold con aining a ma rix of
quar z and/or irons one. Therefore, only signals wi h highly variable pi ch
can be rus ed o indica ing ferrous arge s in he +ID mode.
The +ID arge mode of recogni ion requires a lo of opera or experience. I
is recommended ha he opera or inves iga e mos arge s de ec ed in he
+ID mode and learn o dis inguish he signals.
The audio blanking on ferrous arge s is he mos useful form of
discrimina ion. This will only opera e if a Doub e D coil is used.
The cen ral posi ion of he Iron Discrimination swi ch ac iva es he A Meta
mode. There is no discrimina ion in his mode. Targe s will cause pi ch
and volume of signals o vary, bu hese varia ions convey no consis en
informa ion abou he ype of me al.

The form of ferrous discrimina ion which blanks he signal will no work if a
monoloop coil is used ins ead of he recommended Doub e D. In ha
case he Disc mode will be iden ical in response o he A Meta mode.
The Disc + ID mode will opera e in he +ID mode giving pi ch discrimina ion,
bu will s ill no blank ferrous signals.
The opera ion of he Disc + ID mode is affec ed by signals which are oo
s rong. If he signal is oo s rong in +ID mode, he de ec or will emi a
rapidly pulsing signal of cons an pi ch. This is o guard agains erroneous
in erpre a ion indica ing an overload of signal. Lif he coil sligh ly higher
above he ground and he discrimina ion func ions will re urn.
The Disc mode discrimina ion will only blank a ferrous signal when a arge
gives a s rong signal when passing across a piece of iron, a arge response
will be heard un il he SD2200v2 iden ifies ha he arge is indeed iron. A
his poin , he signal will blank. The arge s reng h required for his o
occur can be adjus ed using he Discrimina ion Level Adjus Con rol.

5.2.10 Level Adjust Control
There is usually some overlap be ween signals from useful arge s and
some ypes of iron junk. Because of his, he opera or has o use he Leve
Adjust knob o selec he amoun of discrimina ion be ween wo ex remes:
no useful arge missed, bu some iron ge ing hrough (an i-clockwise)
and unlikely any iron de ec ed bu some small non-ferrous arge s possibly
missed (clockwise - see page 21)
The Leve Adjust gives he opera or he abili y o selec he sensi ivi y and
likelihood of a arge being discrimina ed as ferrous. The same con rol
also affec s how he de ec or recognises ground mineralisa ion as opposed
o me al arge s, while opera ing in Tracking.
Turning he con rol an i-clockwise increases he s reng h of a signal required
for iron discrimina ion o be ac iva ed. Turning he con rol clockwise has
he opposi e affec , bu non-ferrous arge s are more likely o be mis aken
for iron.
The Leve Adjust con rol has exac ly he same effec in bo h
Disc and Disc + ID posi ions. In he A Meta mode i effec s only he
Tracking mode. Se fully clockwise here is li le danger of he Tracking
cancelling ou genuine arge s, however some ground may also give a
false signal. Wi h he Leve Adjust con rol se fully an i-clockwise mos
ground signals will be tracked effec ively bu some fain , weak arge signals
may be missed.
Minelab recommends ha i is usually bes o dig ou all arge s and only
use he discrimina or in areas where he unreasonable abundance of rash
makes he digging of every hing imprac ical.

Weak signals will give normal all me al ype signals. The shape or profile
of he objec may also influence he ID one on occasion. Check by passing

6. Auxiliary Parts
6.1 Batter
The 6 vol rechargeable ba ery supplied wi h your SD2200v2 will give power
o opera e he de ec or for 14 - 15hrs af er being fully charged.
These ba eries may be recharged a any ime during heir discharge cycle.
I is very impor an o fully charge he ba eries before s orage. Do no
leave a ba ery fully discharged for longer han 1 day.
6.2 Batter Chargers
Two ypes of ba ery chargers (mains and 12 vol car charger) are supplied
wi h he SD2200v2.
6.2.1 Charging Batteries
· Turn he SD2200v2 off before disconnec ing he ba ery.
· Disconnec he ba ery cable from he de ec or and plug in o he
appropria e charger. When charging, he ba ery mus be kep in an
uprigh posi ion.
6.2.2 Mains Charger
· The mains charger will charge he ba ery from local mains (AC) power.
· Plug he mains charger in o a mains ou le . Swi ch he mains ou le
on. Check he charger namepla e; i will be ra ed a 1000mAh or
500mAh. The 1000mAh charger will recharge a comple ely fla ba ery
in approxima ely 10hrs while he 500mAh charger will ake
approxima ely 20hrs.
· Par ially discharged ba eries require a shor er period o recharge.
CAUTION
Only use 6v ba eries as supplied. Never use a 12v ba ery as his
will damage he de ecor. This damage is no covered by warran y.

6.2.3 Vehicle battery charger
· The car charger supplied wi h he SD2200v2 will charge he de ec or
ba ery from he cigare e ligh er socke of your mo or vehicle.
· Plug he charger in o he cigare e ligh er socke and urn he igni ion
swi ch o Accessories. This supplies 12 vol power o he cigare e
ligh er socke . This vol age is reduced by he charger o 6 vol ou pu o
charge he de ec or ba ery.
· A red LED will flash while he ba ery is charging. When he ba ery is
fla he LED may flash fas enough so as o appear cons an ly on, as
he ba ery charges he LED will flash a a slower ra e. Leave he ba ery
o charge for approxima ely 10hrs using his charger.
· If he ba ery vol age of your vehicle drops below 11 vol s, he charger
will s op charging. This s ops he ba ery charger from fla ening he
vehicle ba ery.
CAUTION
The 12 vol charger is designed for use wi h vehicles which have a
nega ive ear h elec rical sys em. Mos cars made af er 1970 will
have a nega ive ear h elec rical sys em. If you plug he charger in o

7. Detecting Techniques
7.1 Searching
The SD2200v2 is a mo ion de ec or, which means ha i mus be moving
in rela ion o a arge in order o de ec i . DO NOT se your shaf leng h oo
shor . If he coil is oo close o your body i may de ec your pick, he battery,
or any o her me al ha you may be carrying.
No e: DO NOT wear s eel cap boo s or shoes wi h me al eyele s when
de ec ing.
If you find ha you are ge ing false signals as you sweep he coil, check
ha hey are no produced by any me al ha you are carrying. Move he
coil closer and fur her away from your body o de ermine if he signals are
coming from i ems such as your pick or he ba ery. If he signals are from
hese i ems you mus increase he dis ance be ween hem and he coil.

Each sweep should overlap he area covered by he previous sweep. This
will ensure a full coverage of he searched area. Be aware of he search
pa ern of he coi and overlap your sweeps o ake his in o accoun .
7.2 Prospecting Tips
The SD2200v2 has superior ground balancing fea ures and i is possible
o find qui e large objec s near he surface in well-worked areas simply
because o her de ec ors have been unable o cope wi h he high degree of
mineralisa ion. In ligh of his, you should no ignore wha can seem o be
unlikely responses. In o her words, dig all signals, even in  hrashed areas.
Very large varia ions in he mineralisa ion of an area can produce a signal
in he de ec or. Typically, in he Vic orian goldfields you migh ge a response
from a concen ra ion of orange/reddish dyke ma erial or clay. Similarly, in
he loamy condi ions of Wes ern Aus ralia a pocke of dark orange/reddish
clay or rock may produce a sudden signal varia ion.
I is no recommended ha you ry o ground balance he de ec or on op of
a signal, in an a emp o cancel a ques ionable response, as his can also
cancel weak signals from very deep arge s. If in doub scrape away some
soil above he suspec signal. If he signal ge s s ronger, i is a arge , so
dig i !
If he ground is ex remely variable and causes he de ec or o be very noisy,
you may ry opera ing wi h he Channe swi ch se o he Channe 1 posi ion.
This will reduce noises caused by he varying mineralisa ion, bu some
nugge s may no be de ec ed. The full range of nugge s are only de ec ed
when he channel swi ch is se o he cen ral B posi ion, no in Channe 1
or Channe 2.
Charcoal can sound loud a imes and ra her like a me allic objec when
close o he surface. Charcoal is usually crea ed by bushfires or by farmers
burning off ree s umps. The charcoal may be below he ground level and
i is no always obvious un il you have ac ually dug up and loca ed he
cause of hese noises a few imes. Once he charcoal is removed from
he ground he signal will vanish.

7.3 Hints for Maximum Gold Recover
· Keep he coi as close o he ground as possible.
· Lis en very carefully. This is more impor an han concen ra ing on
looking.
· SLOW DOWN! DO NOT rush  ake your ime.
7.4 Identif ing Target Signals
Me allic arge s will usually give a solid sounding response when he coil
is swep across he objec from any direc ion. Ground noises usually give
a broad uneven response when he coil is swep from differen direc ions.
A me allic arge generally sends ou a shor , sharp and mos ly symme rical
response.
If you are no sure whe her he sound is ground noise or a arge , you need
o find ou if he signal is valid. Scrape a shallow hole abou 70mm o
100mm deep over he suspec ed arge . Sweep he coil over he hole a
he original ground level. Do no dip he coil in o he hole. If he signal has
decreased in volume or is less defined, i is a ground noise. If he signal
remains he same or becomes louder, i is a me allic arge . If you are s ill
no sure, make he hole deeper and repea he process. You will also no ice
ha mineral noises are of en experienced from one direc ion only, on he
re urn swing i is no longer here.
The Halo Effec , which is buil up around a buried me al objec , makes
he objec appear o be larger o he SD2200v2 han i ac ually is. This will
be reduced once he arge is dis urbed from i s posi ion in he soil.
An example of his is when a small arge , de ec ed a a subs an ial dep h
wi h he SD2200v2, is barely or no even de ec able once recovered from
he ground. Even if reburied, he Halo Effec  will disappear.
I is no recommended ha you ry o elimina e wha migh appear o be a
fain , isola ed ground noise by balancing he SD2200v2, as you migh be
balancing ou he response from a deeply buried me allic arge .

7.5 Pinpointing
In order o save ime in he recovery of an objec and o reduce he size of
he hole required o ex rac i from he ground, i is necessary o pinpoin
he exac loca ion of he objec . The echnique described here will be
par icularly useful wi h he Double D coil, bu will also work wi h a Monoloop
coil.
When a likely objec is de ec ed, sweep he general area wi h he coil,
aking no e of where he s ronges signal is received. Raise and lower he
coil o one side of he arge o make sure you are s ill ground balanced. If
necessary balance he de ec or again, hen recheck he signal. If he ground
balance is accura e you may begin he pinpoin ing procedure. Decrease
he leng h of he sweep and i should be possible o draw an imaginary line
in he ground where he s ronges signal is loca ed (see figure 9). Now,
move around he arge and sweep he coil a 90 degrees o he ini ial
direc ion. Repea he process of drawing an imaginary line. Where he wo
imaginary lines cross is where he objec is loca ed.
If using a Monoloop coil, small shallow
nugge s will give a signal near he rim
of he coil. An al erna ive pinpoin ing
echnique for Monoloop coils is o urn
he de ec or coil on i s side and move
he coil while i is ver ical across where
you suspec he arge o be. This may
assis in pinpoin ing as shown in figure

7.6 Digging the Target
Once you have es ablished he loca ion of he arge i is necessary o dig
a small hole o recover i . In order o preserve he environmen , i is essen ial
o make he hole as small as possible and always replace any soil and
grass ha you have removed. Carry a leas one of he following digging
ools wi h you when searching. The bes ools are:
· a small, s rong, digging spade
· a pick
· a shovel
· a crowbar (for very deep objec s in hard ground).
Before digging, clear he area of loose surface ma erial and check ha he
sound is s ill here. If i is no , he arge mus be among he surface ma erial.
If he signal is s ill here, dig down 50mm o 100mm. If he arge is no
visible, sweep over he hole. If he signal has gone hen i mus be in he
pile jus dug. Make sure ha here are no objec s buried in he soil.
Take care when you dig because damaging a nugge can reduce i s value.
Minelab sugges s you s ar digging abou 100mm in fron of he arge o
reduce he chance of damage. Pile he diggings carefully as i migh be
necessary o search hem sys ema ically la er. They mus also be replaced,
jus as hey were dug, once your search ends.
If i becomes eviden ha he arge is in he removed soil pile, sweep he
coil over he pile and pinpoin where i lies. Progressively halve he pile
con aining he arge . If he arge is s ill difficul o find, lay he de ec or
down wi h he coil fla on he ground. Take a handful of he diggings and
pass hem over he coil. If here is no signal, place he handful carefully
away from he pile and repea wi h ano her handful. Of course, your hands
and wris s mus be free of any me allic jewellery and wa ches. Once he
objec has been recovered i is a good idea o sweep he hole again o
ensure ha here are no o her arge s o be de ec ed.
When you have found an objec in a par icular hole, search he surrounding
area very carefully as i is very likely ha here are more objec s nearby. If
you hear a arge , keep searching un il you find i . I is here and i migh be
valuable.

7.6.1 Digging Deep Targets
The SD2200v2 has unparalleled dep h capabili ies which will surprise
experienced and new prospec ors alike. If he arge appears o be buried
deeply, i will help o use he following echnique:

as you can. Scrape a hole abou 100mm deep and large enough o
ake he coil. Keep es ing he arge loca ion as you dig deeper and
deeper. Be careful ha he arge is no in he wall of he hole and
you dig pas i .
· If using a Monoloop coil, urn he de ec or coil on o i s edge, making
i ver ical, and probe various sec ions of he hole, lis ening for he
loudes reading.
7.7 Salt Environments
The SD2200v2 will find objec s a grea dep h in sal y environmen s, bu
in erfering signals caused by he sa ura ed sal or highly concen ra ed sal
can no be comple ely balanced ou . The 11 Double D coil will give he
bes resul s in sal y condi ions. Again, only searching in Channe 1 may
help o keep he de ec or s able.

8. Maintenance
The SD2200v2 is a high quali y elec ronic ins rumen . I is finely engineered
and housed in a durable con ainer. Take care of i in he following way:
·I is vi ally impor an o keep he connec ors dry and clean.
· Do no expose he de ec or o high empera ures or leave in he sun
longer han necessary. Shading will help pro ec i . Avoid leaving i in
a closed vehicle, especially in he sun.
· The coil housing will wear hrough if you scrub he ground wi h i
while searching. Minelab recommends ha you use a replaceable
skid pla e on he coils o pro ec hem.
· To preven dir en ering be ween he coil and skidpla e, you can use
a silk ape such as Leukosilk®, which is available from chemis s.
The use of some o her apes, such as insula ion ape, can resul in
loss of performance.
· The con rol box is no wa erproof, even hough i has been designed
o be wa er-resis an . Avoid ge ing i we .
· The coils are no wa erproof. They are wa er resis an and may be
used in rain or we condi ions. Do no immerse in wa er.
· The con rol box and Coils mus no come in o con ac wi h pe rol or
o her oil-based liquids.
· If any par of he de ec or comes in o con ac wi h corrosive
subs ances, including sal or sal wa er, i mus be washed wi h
fresh wa er. Keep he uni dry and clean. To clean he de ec or use a

12.1 Search Coils
The SD2200v2 is supplied wi h he 11 Double D as i s s andard coil.
Three o her coils are available as accessories for use on he SD2200v2
 he 18, 11, and 8 Monoloop coils.
Monoloop coils end o give sligh ly s ronger or more sensi ive signals han
he Double D coil. However, Monoloop coils are also a li le more noisy if
he ground is heavily mineralised.
Larger diame er coils end o give be er ground coverage and deeper dep h
han smaller coils. However, a smaller coil ends o have increased
sensi ivi y o iny arge s han larger coils.
There is, herefore, a defini e advan age and purpose for each of he range
of coil ypes and sizes.
