MinicomAdvanced SystemsLimited.
Thisdocumentprovidesinstallation and operation instructionsforMinicom’s
Smart 216 /232 IP. Itisintended forsystemadministratorsand networkmanagers,
and assumesthatreaders have a generalunderstandingofnetworks, hardware and
software.
Technicalprecautions
Thisequipmentgeneratesradiofrequencyenergy and ifnotinstalled in accordance
withthe manufacturer’s instructions, maycauseradio frequencyinterference.
Thisequipmentcomplieswith Part15, SubpartJoftheFCC rulesfora ClassA
computingdevice. Thisequipmentalso complieswiththe Class Alimitsforradio
noiseemission fromdigitalapparatussetoutin the Radio Interference Regulation

remotelyoverIP.

2.Introduction
TheSmart 216 IP and the Smart 232 IP two unitsare functionallythe same. The
Smart 216 IP has16 Serverportsandthe Smart 232 IP has32 Serverports.
TheSmart 216 /232 IP extendsyourKVM(keyboard,video, and mouse)fromany
computerorserveroverTCP/IPvia LAN, WAN orInternetconnection. Now2
remote users can control, monitorand manage up to 16remote (PS/2, USB)servers
simultaneouslyfromwherevertheyare,inside oroutside the organization.
Simultaneously1 localusercan alsoaccess the servers.Simultaneously2 more
remote users can operateserialdevicessuch asrouters ormanaged network
switches. Alternatively, 1 more usercan use a PDU.
TheSmart 216 /232 IP isacost-effective hardwaresolution, forsecure remote
KVMaccess &controlof16 (32 forthe Smart232 IP)computers/servers fromthe
BIOS level-independentofthe OS.
TheSmart 216 /232 IP isbased on Minicom’s innovative ROC technology in
which each computer/serverisdirectlyconnected to the switch via ROC dongles
usingonlystandard CAT5cable ata distance ofup to30m/100ft in a star
configuration. Noexternalpowerisneeded atthe remote ROC.
3.Keyfeatures
BIOSlevelcontrol to any server’s brandand model,regardlessofthe server
condition andnetworkconnectivity, coveringthe entire spectrumofcrash
scenarios.
Compatible with allmajoroperatingsystems. Supports manyhardware and
softwareconfigurationsforthe remote clientand the Targetservercomputers,as

8.Pre-installation guidelines
·Placecablesawayfromfluorescentlights, air conditioners,and machinesthat
arelikelyto generate electricalnoise
·Placethe Smart 216 /232IP on a flat, clean and drysurface
·TheSmart 216 /232 IP isnotintended forconnection to exposed outdoorlines
·Ensurethatthe maximumdistancebetween each computerand the Smart 216 /
232 IP, doesnotexceed 30m/100ft forROCs.
8.1Avoiding general rackmounting problems
Elevated operating ambienttemperature
Theoperatingambienttemperature ofthe rackenvironmentmaybe greaterthan
the roomambientwhen installinginto a closed ormulti-unit rackassembly. So
installthe equipmentin an environmentcompatiblewith the maximumrated
ambienttemperature.
Reduced airflow
Install the equipmentin a rackin such a waythatthe amountofairflowrequired
forsafe operationisnotcompromised. Leave a gap ofatleast5cm/2” each side of
the Smart 216 /232 IP.
Mechanicalloading
Mountthe equipmentinthe rackinsuch a waythata hazardouscondition isnot
achieved due to uneven mechanicalloading.
Circuitoverloading
When connectingthe equipmentto the supplycircuit,considerthe effectthat
overloadingofcircuitsmighthave on over-currentprotection and supplywiring.
Reliable earthingofrack-mountedequipmentshould be maintained. Give attention
to supplyconnectionsotherthan directconnectionsto the branch circuit (e.g. use of
powerstrips).

Each computer/ serverisdirectlyconnected to the Smart 216 /232 IP via the
appropriate RoCusingCAT5 cable in a starconfiguration. No externalpoweris
neededattheremote ROCs. The ROCsdrawtheirpowerfromthe computer’s
keyboard port (ROC PS/2)orfromthe USBport(ROCUSB). The figuresbelow
illustratethe ROC PS/2 andROC USB.

1. Usingthe Powercord provided, connectthe Smart 216/232 IP to a socket
outletwith groundingconnection. Onlyuse the powercordsupplied with the
unit.

2. Switch on the Smart 216 /232 IP.
10.Setting theIPaddress
Bydefault, Smart 216 /232 IP bootswith an automaticallyassigned IP address
froma DHCP (Dynamic HostConfiguration Protocol) serveron the network. The
DHCP serverprovidesa valid IP address, gatewayaddressand subnetmask.
You can identifythe IP addressfromthe OSDatthe localposition. Also where
there isno DHCP server, setthe IP address locallyvia the OSDasfollows:
1. Fromthe localkeyboard,press Shift twice. The OSDMainwindowappears.
See Figure11.

In the Settingswindownavigate downwardsusingthe Tabkey. Atthe bottomof
the window, presstab to go to the top ofthe window.Change settingsbytypingin
the selected area orbypressingthe spacebar– whicheverisrelevant.

Changing the Network parameters
Enable DHCP – When a DHCP serverisactive on the same networkto which
Smart 216 /232 IP isconnected, DHCP providesautomatic IP assignment.
When DHCP isdisabled – (Recommended)– You can assign a fixed IP addressto
the Smart 216 /232 IP.
ConsultyourNetworkAdministratorregardingthe use ofthe DHCP.
When DHCP isdisabled, enter the IPAddress, SubnetMask, and Gateway as
given byyourNetworkAdministrator.
Once the IP address issatisfactoryloginto the web interface to completethe
configuration, asexplainedin section 11 below.
(Networkparameterscan also be changed fromthe remote GUIasexplained on
page 15).
11.Logging intothewebinterface
Clientcomputer operating system. Windows2000 orhigher,with Firefox 3 or
InternetExplorer6.0 orlaterversion. Linux with Firefox 3.
11.1SSLCertificatenotes
When firstconnecting, 2 browsersecuritywarningsappear. Click Yes to proceed.
Thefirstwarningdisappearsupon firstSmart 216 /232 IP clientinstallation, when
Minicom’s rootcertificate isinstalled.
11.2Logging in
Tocompletethe initialsetup via the web configurationinterface:
1. Open yourweb browser(InternetExplorerversion 6.0 orhigher).
2. Type the Smart 216 /232 IP systemIP address – httporhttps://IPaddress/-
and press Enter. The loginpage appears,see Figure 13.

3. Type the default Administratorusername -admin -and password -access -
(bothlowercase).
4. Press Enter.The webinterface opensattheTargetspage. See Figure 14.
5. Bookmarkthe page foreasyreference.

Bydefaultan Administratorcan access allconnected Targets,so theyallappearon
the Targetspage.
Columns:
Servername - The servername can be changed intheconfiguration settingsto
give the serveran identifiable name.
ServerStatus- ServerStatuscan be on, offorbusy(i.e. anotheruserisaccessing
the server).
User – The currentuser(ifany)accessingthe Target.
11.3Connecting toaTargetserver
To connectto aTargetyou click thedesired Targetin theServer Name
Column. Thescreen oftheTargetappears sidetheremoteconsole. Section
26 on page28 explains howto conductaremotesession. Thesections below
firstexplain howto configurethesystem.

Fromthe menu, clickConfiguration.The Network>Configuration page appears,
see Figure 15.

ConsultyourNetworkAdministratorforthe networksettings.
Devicename - Type a name forthe Smart 216 /232IP.
TCPPort -Choose anyTCP port fromport#800 to65535. (When managed by
KVM.net®IIorAccessIT,the port numbercan be changed fromthe management
interface ifneeded).
Notes
Firewallorroutersecurityaccesslistmustenableinbound communication through
the selected TCP port forthe Smart 216 /232 IP’s IP address.
ForClientcomputeraccessfroma secured LAN,the selected portshould be open
foroutbound communication.
12.1.1LAN
In the LAN section – see Figure 15 – isthe following:
Enable DHCP – When a DHCP serverisactive on the same networkto which

These parameters can be configuredlocallyfromthe OSDasexplained on page 12.
12.1.2KVM.net
Note! Anyreference toKVM.netequallyrefers to AccessIT.
KVM.netisacentralized IP based systemforsecure controlofservers and network
devices, powerand useradministration in the datacenterenvironment. KVM.net
combinesOut-Of-Band, KVMvia IP access with modern ITstandardsand
requirements. Itisthe mostcomprehensive remote servermaintenance solution
availableinthe markettoday. The systemalso workwith AccessIT
EnableKVM.net -Checkthisoption toallowSmart 216 /232 IP unit tobe
remotelymanaged byMinicom’s KVM.netsystem.
Manager Auto Discovery – when checked, KVM.netautomaticallydetectsthe
Smart 216 /232 IP, if itresideson the same networksegment.
Manager IP– IfSmart 216 /232 IP resideson a differentsegment, type thestatic
IP addressoftheKVM.netManager.(We advise typing the static IP addressofthe
KVM.netManagereven ifthe Smart 216 /232 IP resideson the same network
segmentasthe KVM.netManager).

13.Administration >User Settings
From the menu click User Settings, Figure 16 appears.

Thereare2 levelsofuseraccess:
·Administrator
·User
Administrator
An Administratorhasunrestricted accessto all windowsand settings. An
Administratorcan change the name and password and Targetserverpermissionsof
all users.
User
AUsercan access/controlpermittedTargetservers, butcannotuse the advanced
mouse settings.
AUserhasno access to theweb configuration interface.

13.1Adding auser
Toadd a user:
1. Click and type a name and a password. The passwordmustbe at
least6 characters – letters ornumbers, and mustnotincludethe username, even
if othercharacters areadded.
Note! The following“special”characters:&,<, >, ”cannotbe used foreither
the username orpassword.
Dependingon the securitylevelchosen the username and passwordparameters
are different. See section 18 on page 23.
2. Selectthe permission type fromthe Permission box.
3. Click , the userappears inthe listofusers.The Permission column
showsthe userlevel(Administrator, User,ViewOnly). The Statuscolumn shows
whetherthe userisblockedorunblocked, explained insection 13.3 below.
13.2Deleting auser
To deletea user:
1. Selectthe userfromthe list.
2. Click .
3. Click , the changesare saved.
13.3Blocking auser
An alternative to deletinga userisblockinga user.Thismeansthatthe user’s name
and passwordisstored,butthe userisunableto accessthe system. Check Block to
blocka user. Uncheck Block to allowthe useraccess.

14.Administration >SwitchConfiguration
Give the servers connected to the Smart 216/232 IP unique names, so thatusers
accessingthe systemcan identifythe serverseasily.
To do so:
1. Fromthe menu click Switch Configuration.The Switch Configuration window
appears,see Figure 17.

2. In the Server Name section change the name ofthe connected serversby
selectingthe servername and typinga newname. Click to save
changes.
