SAFETY & COMFORT (continued)
I
In recent years, medical attention on occupational injuries has identified
common, seemingly harmless activities as potential causes of a wide range
of problems collectively known as Repetitive Stress Injuries or Cumulative
Trauma Disorders. It is now recognized that any repetitive motion may
contribute to these health problems. Depending on how it is used, the
prolonged or repetitive use of almost any machine might have a potential
for discomfort or injury. As a user of this binder, you might also be at risk.
The most commonly accepted causes of this type of disorder are
repeated, forceful actions, usually in an awkward position or posture,
without sufficient rest to allow the body to recover. These repetitive
actions may cause nerves, tendons, ligaments, and other soft body parts
to become irritated and inflamed.
By paying attention to the way you perform your work, and do other
activities, you can identify the behaviors that could put you at risk.
The precautions outlined below are examples you can take to help
reduce the likelihood of developing these problems and work more
comfortably with your new binder. Keep in mind, however, that these
are only suggestions. Comfort is personal and only you may be able to
judge what works best for you.
• You may find that your body will be most comfortable and relaxed
with the binder placed directly in front of you. The binder and your
supplies should be within easy reach —avoid excessive stretching.
• The binder may be used in either a standing or seated position.
If you are standing, make sure that the work surface height that the
binder is on does not require you to bend over in a way that would
strain your back or arms.
• If you are seated, adjust the height of your chair to your table so
your body is naturally aligned and make sure you have adequate
legroom. Stay relaxed and relatively upright. Don’t force yourself
into an uncomfortable position.
• Do not bend your wrists unnaturally during use.
• Don’t stay in one position for too long. Try changing hands and
varying your posture.
• Take breaks. Frequent short breaks are probably better than a few
long ones.
Many factors go into creating a comfortable workspace, including proper
placement and adjustment of furniture and equipment. A thorough work
site analysis by a qualified expert is important in order to reduce the risk
of repetitive motion injuries. If you experience pain, throbbing, aching,
tingling, stiffness, a burning sensation, swelling, numbness, or weakness in
your wrists, hands, arms or legs, see your physician immediately.
DO NOT IGNORE THESE WARNING SIGNS. Even if symptoms occur
when you are not using the binder, they can be associated with painful and
sometimes permanently disabling injuries or disorders of the nerves, muscles,
tendons, or other parts of the body. These symptoms could mean that
you are developing a repetitive stress injury that requires prompt medical
attention. For more detailed information, consult your doctor.

THE FASTBACK® PHOTOBOOK SYSTEM
IV
The Fastback® Photobook Binding System consists of four
components:
• The Fastback™ Splitter
• The Fastback® Model 25 Photobook Binder
• PhotoPro thermal binding strips
• The Fastback® Hardcover™ Guide
The Fastback Splitter (figure 2) is a revolutionary device that treats
the binding edge of sheets to ensure a strong bind. Ordinarily, the
papers that are used to create photobooks are coated to enhance
the appearance of the photographs. The Splitter uses a totally new
method to prepare these difficult-to-bind, coated papers, so that
virtual any document can be bound, even if it is printed on the most
bind-resistant paper. The Splitter creates a channel in the center of
each sheet, which allows the adhesive to attach itself to the interior
paper fibers. It no longer matters if the paper is coated, the sheets
will stay firmly bound for the lifetime of your photobook.
The Fastback® Model 25 Photobook binder (figure 3) is the latest
in Powis Parker’s line of on-demand binders. The Model 25 was
designed to handle the heavy workloads associated with high-
volume, on-demand photobook production. It is specifically designed
to work hand-in-hand with the Fastback Splitter and the new
PhotoPro Strip™ to deliver a strong and even bind.
The PhotoPro™ binding strip (not shown) is specifically designed
to create strong binds with paper that has been processed with the
Fastback Splitter. It contains a special thermal adhesive that wicks up
into the paper fibers to create a bind capable of rivaling sewn sheets
in strength and appearance.
The final component is the Fastback® Hardcover™ Guide (figure
4). With the Guide and Powis Parker’s Hardcovers you can create
professional-quality Photobooks easily and inexpensively in less than
a minute.

BINDING THE BOOK BLOCK
V-A
1. Turn the Power Switch “ON.” The Power Switch is located in the
lower left on the front of the binder (figure 5). Once switched on,
the Fastback® Model 25 Photobook binder takes about ten minutes
to warm up.
When it’s ready, the display reads “READY TO BIND.”
2. Prepare glossy coated paper using the Fastback Splitter to ensure a
strong bind (see Fastback Splitter Manual for more details).
3. Before inserting your book block into the binder, add the folded
endleaves to the front and back of the book block. The windowed
endleaf should align with the photo on the first page of the book
block. Make sure all the sheets and endleaves in your document are
aligned by firmly jogging them on any flat surface.
When the book block is ready, put your book block inside the
binder, sliding it all the way to the RIGHT side of the opening (figure
6). Tap the pages again until you’re sure they’re straight and all the
pages are tapped down.
NOTE: If you notice your sheets and endleaves aren’t perfectly
straight, now is the time to fix them. Press the OPEN button to
unclamp your document, then re-align the pages. When you’re
done, press the BIND button.
4. Now press the green BIND button. The book clamps close and the
display indicates the correct strip width for your book (Figure 7).
5. Select the binding strip of the desired width. Make sure the strip
length matches the document’s spine length.
6. Insert strip into Strip Feed on right side of binder (figure 8).
7. When the binding is complete (approximately 35–45 seconds), the
clamps open to release the document. The display reads,
“REMOVE BOOK.”
8. Remove your bound document, and place it in the cooling rack for
at least four minutes (figure 9). Stack the finished book blocks up to
4–5 books high, setting the most recently bound book blocks to the
rear of the stack. Letting your book cool allows the adhesive to set
and ensures a strong bind.
HINT: If you want to bind a book that has an unusual length, you may
hand cut a the strip to match that document’s length. However, it is very
important that when you insert the strip in the binder, you insert the side
with the adhesive gap first to avoid adhesive leakage into the machine.
For production quantities of books it is always recommended that you
purchase strip manufactured to the correct length.

BINDING PHOTOBOOKS
V-B
Powis Parker offers Photobook covers in a wide range of sizes, colors
and finishes. Contact your Powis Parker sales rep for more information.
With the addition of our Foilfast. printer, you can apply colorful foil
printed titles and artwork to your covers and spines. Fastback Photobook
Hardcovers™ come in two styles: windowed and windowless. The
window is designed to allow the picture on the first page of the book
block to act as a design element for the cover. For more detailed
information on using the Fastback Hardcover Guide, see the Fastback
Hardcover™ Guide User’s Manual.
To create a Photobook, your book block (interior pages) should be
bound with folded sheets of stiff paper called endleaves at the front and
back of the document. The windowed endleaf must be used for the
front of the book if you are using a windowed Hardcover.
Once the book block is bound, assembling your hard cover book can be
done quickly and accurately:
NOTE: If you wish, you can also add headbands (small cloth strips and
the top and bottom edges of the book’s spine) for a more professional
finished appearance.
1. Measure the bound book block with the Book Width Gauge on the
lower right side of the Hardcover Guide to determine the proper
cover width (Figure 34).
2. Open the front and back endleaves and press them flat to flex the
strip on each side. Close the endleaves before proceeding.
3. Place an empty Fastback Photobook Hardcover, adhesive side up,
in the Hardcover Guide with the window on the right, and clamp
in place. The top and right edges of the cover should be under the
translucent green stops. If the book width is C or greater, you may
use the green plastic inserts to ensure that the book block does
not shift during binding. Remove the narrow release paper from
the right panel (window side) of the Fastback Hardcover, exposing
a small portion of the super-strong binding adhesive that coats the
interior hard covers. (Figure 35).
4. Set your bound book block upside down in place against the Guide’s
translucent green stops and press down to fasten the book block
to the narrow adhesive area (Figure 36). The window on the book
block and the window on the cover should be aligned and evenly
positioned within the cover.
5. Carefully lift the right side of the book block and remove the large
release paper from the right panel of the cover (Figure 37). Roll
and lower the book block onto the panel and press it against the
panel to secure it.
5. Remove the remaining release papers from the left side, (Figure 38),
and bring the left panel of the Fastback Hardcover over the book
block and align, with the top and right edges of the cover abutting
the purple stops (Figure 39). Press straight down onto the text
block and smooth the cover to the spine. Remove the book from
Guide, Open and rub the endleaves to ensure that they are securely
fastened.

TIPS FOR BETTER BINDING
VI
• Before binding, tap the pages on the top and side several times
to ensure that they are even and fully seated when the document
is in the binding recess. The strip edge and document edge
should line up.
• All paper has a grain — it is a result of the fibers that make up the
paper. The grain of the paper should run parallel to the binding
edge of the document. If the grain runs parallel to the long side of
the sheet, the paper is “grain long”. When the grain runs parallel
to the short side of the paper, it is “grain short”.
A sheet of paper will naturally flex more easily along the direction
of its grain. Most copy papers are grain long, so you should not
have any problems with the bind. Grain long paper will give you
the best bind. Occasionally you may find papers that are grain
short, so we recommend you test unfamiliar papers before
binding large numbers of documents.
• Some coated papers, and papers with heavy ink or toner
coverage may also experience problems with binding. This is
especially true with laser printers that use fuser oil as part of the
process. Preliminary test binds are recommended to ensure that
your documents will bind properly. All difficult to bind papers,
should be processed with the Fastback Splitter before binding
(see section IV on page 6).
• After the binding cycle, be sure to place your document entirely
upright, with the bound side down in the cooling rack for at
least four minutes. Improper cooling of your document may
result in a crooked spine. Bind strength increases over time, and
is maximized after 24 hours. When placing multiple documents in
the cooling compartment, make sure it doesn’t get overloaded.
• NOTE: For further questions about, or problems with paper
grain direction or machine operation, contact the Powis Parker
Photobook Product Manager.
IMPORTANT : Minor glue buildup on the heaters is
inevitable. When cleaning the heaters, turn the machine off and
unplug it. Wait for the heaters to cool, and then wipe off any glue
using a dry lint free cloth and cleaning solution.
CAUTION: The heaters are very delicate. Do not use anything
sharp to remove glue from the clamps, platen, or interior surfaces
of the binder.
CAUTION: Before cleaning heaters, turn off unit
and unplug power cord. Allow heaters to cool for
one minute before cleaning. Don’t use sharp objects
on heater surfaces.

wraps around the book equally on the front and on the back. You can
change this with the “SET WRAP” feature. You can shift the strip so it
wraps around more on the front or on the back. Also, if it isn’t wrapping
evenly, then you can adjust it so that it does.
a. Press the BIND button to select “SET WRAP.” Make your selection
according to the binding style that you are currently using.
b. After selecting the current binding style the default display is “EVEN
WRAP.” To change this, use the OPEN and EDIT buttons. Pressing
OPEN subtracts from the setting, shifting the strip towards the back.
Pressing EDIT adds to the setting, shifting the strip towards the front
(figure 12).
c. When you finish adjusting the strip’s wrap, press the BIND button.
During binding, the binder briefly flashes a message to show the wrap
change.
d. In the SET WRAP mode, one of the options is “Minimum Front
Wrap.” To select this feature, use the OPEN button to decrease the
wrap past minus 7 units until the screen displays “MIN. FRONT WRAP.”
This feature wraps the strip around your document so that the smallest
possible amount of strip wraps onto the front cover. Press the BIND
button to select this feature.
6. Choosing More Options
The MORE OPTIONS menu allows you to customize

KeepingYour Fastback® Binder Clean
Recommended Daily Maintenance
Cleaning the Platen
If a strip gets jammed or stuck to the platen, or if adhesive has melted
onto the platen, you’ll need to clean the back-up bars and heating platen.
If you have time (about an hour), turn off the machine and let it cool
completely. When the platen is completely cool, the adhesive should
peel off with no trouble.
If you can’t wait for the binder to cool, follow these steps:
a. First put on the heat-protective glove. Always wear this glove when
working with the back-up bars and heating platen, as the platen can be
very hot.
b. Now open the cover to its full upright position (figure 48). The
platen is the teflon-coated plate that runs across the center of the unit
(item B in figure 48).
c. To access the top of the platen, flip up the book rest (figure 45 on
page 15). Wipe off any glue with a clean dry cotton cloth. Wipe the
surface lengthwise until it’s clean.
d. Wipe off any glue from the clamping surfaces of both back-up bars.
NOTE: Do not use the Citrus solution on the platen when the platen
is hot!
• If the unit has cooled, wipe off any glue with a cotton
cloth dampened in the Citrus cleaning solution. You can also peel the
adhesive off the upper side of the platen with your fingers (or a wooden
instrument, like an ice cream stick).
Cleaning the Back-Up Bars
The back-up bars are located inside the upper cover case. These bars
can become gummed up from excess adhesive over time. Remember to
use the heat-protective glove when handling the bars if they are hot.
a. Open the Fastback® Photobook Model 25 cover.
b. Find the back-up bars (figure 47 on page 17).
c. Push one bar back up against the lid so you can access the inner
faces of the bars.
d. Dampen a clean cloth with the Citrus cleaning solution. With the
cloth, clean the edges of both bars.
e. Close the cover when finished.
WARNING: Use the heat-protective glove
when working inside the Fastback Photobook
Model 25 binder!

Cleaning the Bottom of the Platen
Sometimes the bottom edge of the rotating platen gets
adhesive on it. To reach it, use the small pulley next to the
black gear.
d. With your left hand, rotate the pulley toward the back of the
binder—in a counter-clockwise direction (figure 49). As you
turn the pulley, the platen rotates.
e. Stop turning when the platen’s edge has rotated 90 degrees.
• If the platen is hot, put on the heat-protective glove and
wipe the platen with a clean dry cotton cloth. Wipe the surface
lengthwise until it’s clean.
NOTE: Do not use the Citrus solution on the platen when the
platen is hot!
• If the unit has cooled, wipe the platen with a cloth dampened
by Citrus. You can also peel the adhesive off the platen with
your fingers (or a wooden instrument, like an ice cream stick).
Closing the Fastback® Cover
First, put the book rest back into its original position (figure 45
on page 15). Apply pressure on the book rest until it clicks and
locks into place.
Before closing the cover, make sure no cleaning materials are
inside the binder. Once you’ve checked, pull down the cover.
Press down on each side of the front of the case until the latch
clicks and locks into place.
Cleaning the Outside of Your Fastback® Photobook Binder
If the outside of your Fastback® starts to get dusty, clean the
cover with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
