Necessary information for safely operating the Express Server is included.
Indications Regarding Safety Instructions
To safely use the Express 5800 Series, follow these instructions when operating.
This manual includes information about which parts are dangerous, what dangers you will
face if you do not follow the instructions, and how you can avoid danger. In addition, Warning
labels, which indicate danger, are stuck on such parts or portions.
This manual employs “Warning” and “Caution” for stickers for safe use, indicating the danger
according to its seriousness. The meanings are as follows.
This symbol denotes that improper handling poses a high risk
of causing death or serious injury.

Safety Precautions
Read, understand, and follow all the precautions described below in order to safely use the
Express Server. Refer to Indications Regarding Safety Instructions as well.
General Precautions
Do not reach into the server.
Only maintenance personnel should open the door. Do not dismantle,
repair, or modify.
Do not reach into the server while maintenance personnel is opening
the door. Doing so causes danger of electrical shock.
Do not insert any foreign materials into the server.
Do not insert foreign materials such as pieces of metal or wire through
the ventilation opening. Doing so can cause fire or electrical shock.
Measures at failure
When the server is not running correctly, cut the power from the
distribution panel or unplug the server. Then contact maintenance
personnel.
Emergency measures
If danger arises and the server must be shut-down, press the
emergency power-off (EPO) switch. If the EPO is used, data in the
server may be destroyed. Accordingly, the guidelines for EPO
operation should be determined in advance, and operators should
familiarize themselves with the guidelines. For more information,

Computer operation for a long time may affect your health. When using a computer, follow
the tips below to avoid stress and maintain your health.
Correct posture
The correct posture of an operator for computer operation is sitting in a chair while
maintaining an upright posture. The keyboard should be placed so that your hands are parallel
with the floor. The screen should be slightly lower than your line of vision. The correct
p
osture is one that does not place stress on your body, and where your muscles are not
contracting excessively.
The incorrect posture is where you are hunched over or hitting the keyboard with your face
close to the monitor. This posture may cause fatigue or eyesight problems.
Display angle adjustment
Most displays can be adjusted left/right and up/down. It is important to change the display
angle to avoid glaring direct light from lighting and to make the contents on the screen
clearer. Computer operation with incorrect posture without proper angle adjustment, results in
operator fatigue starting sooner. Adjust the display angle before operating.
Adjusting screen brightness and contrast
It is possible for a display to change its brightness and contrast. The proper brightness and
contrast of the screen vary depending on the person, age, and surrounding lightness. Adjust
your screen according to your situation. Excessively light or dark screens may adversely
affect your eyes.
Adjusting keyboard angle
Some keyboards have an angle adjustment design. Changing the keyboard angle to make you
comfortable with keyboard operation is very effective in reducing stress on your shoulders,
arms, and fingers. Cleaning peripheral devices and cleaners is also important from the
viewpoint of functions and safety as well as aesthetics. Monitors typically collect dust. As a
dirty monitor screen makes visibility lower, it is necessary to periodically clean the monitor.
Taking a break when tired
Taking a break and doing light exercise for relaxation is recommended.

Introduction
Thanks for purchasing NEC’s Express Series server.
The Express5800/1080Xd is a high-performance server that supports multiprocessors
including up to 8 “Itanium 2” processors, which are the second generation in the Intel®
Itanium® processor family incorporating 64-bit architecture.
The Itanium 2 employs Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) as innovative 64-bit
architecture. The Itanium 2 is also suitable for high-end enterprise systems that feature high-
speed operation and large-size memory capacity, and it realizes higher performance than the
first generation Itanium processor.
We have integrated advanced LSI, high-performance, and high-reliability technology that
inherit from Express Server Series, which had released ahead of all other companies.
Furthermore, the Express5800 Series offers high reliability though the RAS function included
in its system and its bundled software.
To get the best of the Express Server, read this manual carefully and understand how to use
