Introduction and Installation
Introduction and Scope
The WG102-500, WGAP150 ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Access Point is a carrier-grade 802.11b/g
Wi-Fi access point with a centralized management system. It is a powerful solution for building
wireless networks for wireless Internet service, wholesalers and enterprises. Each wireless access
point is loaded with essential features such as Multiple SSID (virtual AP with distinct ESSID and
BSSID), VLAN, and a high-gain antenna.
One wireless access point can masquerade up to 16 different access points. Each virtual access
point can have its own security policy (such as WPA, WPA2, etc.) and authentication mechanism
(such as 802.1x, open, captive portal, etc), to facilitate building your wholesale network much
faster, easier and more cost-effective than ever before. A wireless access point comes with a
high-power Wi-Fi transmitter which greatly enhances coverage and performance.
This manual applies to the ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Access Point indoor model WG102-500,
WGAP150.

The following figure shows a rear panel view of the WG102-500, WGAP150:
Viewed from left to right, the rear panel of the WG102-500, WGAP150 provides the following:
1. Antenna. An RP-SMA connector for connecting the antenna.
2. LAN Connector. A 10/100BaseT Ethernet connector, normally to be connected to a back haul
network.
3. Reset Button. A reset button to be depressed with a pin. Depress and hold for at lease
5seconds to restore factory defaults. (For more information, see “Restoration of Factory
Defaults” on page 3-11.)
4. Power Connector. A connector for 5 VDC power input, to be connected with the supplied
power adaptor.
Viewed from left to right, the WG102-500, WGAP150 has these four status LEDs: Power, Status,
Ethernet, and Wi-Fi (also referred to as WLAN light or Wireless activity light):

Installation
A wireless access point functions as a bridge between a wireless and a wired Ethernet interface. A
typical setup is as follows:

Tip: Before mounting the wireless access point in a high location, first set up and test the
wireless access point to verify wireless network connectivity. Also, see
“Recommendations for Placement of the Wireless Access Point” on page 1-8.

Install the wireless access point and configure LAN and wireless access:
1. Unpack the box and verify the contents.
2. Attach the antenna to the antenna port on the rear panel of the wireless access point.
3. Prepare a computer with an Ethernet adapter. If this computer is already part of your network,
record its TCP/IP configuration settings. Configure the computer with a static IP address of
192.168.0.210 and 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask.
4. Connect an Ethernet cable from the wireless access point to the computer (point A in
Figure 1-4). Securely insert the other end of the cable into the wireless access point Ethernet
port (point B in Figure 1-4). The port could auto sense if the cable is straight-through or
cross-over.
5. Turn on your computer, connect the power adapter to the wireless access point, and verify the
following:
Power: The power light on the wireless access point should be steady green. If the
power light is not lit, check the connections, and check if the power outlet is
controlled by a wall switch that is turned off.
Status: The status light on the wireless access point should be blinking red while the
wireless access point starts up. When the startup process is complete, the status light
should be steady green to indicate that the wireless access point is ready.

Tip: The wireless access point supports Power Over Ethernet (PoE). If you have a
switch that provides PoE, you will not need to use the power adapter to power
the wireless access point. This can be especially convenient when the wireless
access point is installed in a high location far away from a power outlet.

LAN: The LAN light on the wireless access point should be blinking green. If it is not,
make sure that the Ethernet cable is securely attached at both ends.
Wi-Fi: The Wi-Fi light on the wireless access point should be blinking green when the
wireless LAN (WLAN) is ready.
6. Configure the wireless access point Ethernet port for LAN access.
• Connect to the wireless access point by opening your browser and entering
http://192.168.0.229 in the address field.
• When prompted, enter admin for the user name and password for the password, both in
lower case letters.
When you are logged in, the following main menu screen displays to facilitate further
configuration of the wireless access point. (For details about the system information
settings, see “System Information” on page 3-6.)

7. Using a computer with an 802.11g or 802.11b wireless adapter, verify connectivity by using a
browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet, or check for
file and printer access on your network. In order to connect to the Internet, your network must
include a router that provides Internet access.
Now that you have finished the setup steps, you are ready to place the wireless access point in its
permanent position and to deploy the wireless access point in your network. (See
“Recommendations for Placement of the Wireless Access Point” on page 1-8.) If needed, you can
now reconfigure the computer you prepared in step 3 and used in step 6 back to its original TCP/IP
settings.
Quick Start
By default, an access point is preset with SSID: NETGEAR_XXXX, where XXXX is the last 4
hex digits of the LAN MAC Address of the unit.
The default access point bridges the Wi-Fi interface to the Ethernet port, with both encryption and
VLAN tagging disabled.
To access the backbone network connected via the Ethernet port of the unit, establish a session at
the Wi-Fi interface with a Wi-Fi client. After establishing a Wi-Fi client session, information about
the established Wi-Fi session appears at the Web Administration Interface of the wireless access
point, under the section Information-> Wireless.

Recommendations for Placement of the Wireless Access Point
The following are recommendations for the placement of the wireless access point and the
positioning of its antenna:
• The best location for the wireless access point is elevated, such as wall mounted or on the top
of a cubicle, at the center of your wireless coverage area, and within line of sight of all the
mobile devices.
• Vertical positioning of the antenna provides best side-to-side coverage. Horizontal positioning
provides best top-to-bottom coverage.

General Settings
Upon selecting System under the Configure section from the navigation bar on the left of the main
menu, the following screen is displayed to show the configuration options:

Table 2-1 shows the general access point settings.

Field Descriptions
AP Name A user-specified name for the access point.
This value can be retrieved via SNMP.
Location A user-specified name for the location of the access point.
This value can be retrieved via SNMP.
AP Mode This pulldown menu allows you to select the access point to run as a bridge or a
router. When the access point runs as a router, the Management VLAN ID is
ignored and the LAN settings appears for proper network setup.
Domain Name The domain name can be set for wireless clients to have a readable name for both
web management and captive portal redirection URLs.
Server IP The unique IP address for the wireless access point to communicate on the
Ethernet segment. This IP address is distinct from the admin IP address
192.168.0.3 on the Ethernet segment.
There are two check boxes:
•From DHCP. The IP address of the wireless access point is acquired from a
DHCP server on the Ethernet segment.
•Keep Default IP. The default IP address is available on the system along with
the Server IP setting.
Subnet Mask The subnet mask of the wireless access point.
Default Gateway. The default gateway of the wireless access point.
DNS Server The DNS server address to be used by the wireless access point for resolving host
names.
Management VLAN ID The VLAN from which management sessions are allowed. The establishment of
management sessions is restricted to only the specified VLAN ID. If Management
VLAN ID is set to zero, no VLAN restriction is applied. The default value of this
setting is zero, which means no tagging is enabled (instead of tagged with zero).
Timezone This pulldown menu allows you to select the time region for the wireless access
point.
NTP Server The Network Time Protocol (NTP) Server host name to be used for synchronizing
the system clock of the wireless access point. The default value of this setting is
pool.ntp.org.
STP Select the STP check box to enable the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to prevent
path redundancy. When the STP check box is selected, two more options are
provided: Bridge Priority and Ethernet Path Cost.
Bridge Priority The priority for root switch election.
Ethernet Path Cost The best path from the switch to the root switch.

Field Descriptions
L2TP Tunnel Select this check box to start the tunnel establishment from the access point to the
server for centralized traffic management.
L2TP Server Address The L2TP server IP address for the access point to connect to.
L2TP/PPP Username The PPP username for tunnel authentication purpose.
L2TP/PPP Password The PPP password for tunnel authentication purpose.
Tunnel IP Address The unique IP address for the wireless access point to communicate over the
tunnel. If you select the From DHCP check box, the IP address of the wireless
access point is then acquired from a DHCP server over the tunnel.
Tunnel Subnet Mask The subnet mask of the wireless access point over the tunnel.
Tunnel Management
VLAN The VLAN from which management sessions are allowed over the tunnel. The establishment of management sessions is restricted only to the specified VLAN
ID. If the Management VLAN ID is set to zero, no VLAN restriction is applied.
The default value of this setting is zero, which means that no tagging is enabled
(instead of tagged with zero).

Field Descriptions
Layer 2 Communication Layer 2 is in reference to the second layer in the ISO (Open System Interconnect)
model.
Select this check box to allow clients on the same VLAN to communicate with
each other directly. (Windows network resources browsing will be possible.)
By default, Layer 2 Communication is enabled.
Deselect this check box to prevent clients on the same VLAN, SSID or subnet
from communicating directly with each other via Layer 2 protocols. In this case,
traffic is passed on to upper communication layers.
802.1X Version These radio buttons allow selection between v1 and v2 of the 802.1x EAPOL:
•v1. Both v1 and v2 clients can associate with the access point.
•v2. Only v2 clients can associate with the access point.
Most modern wireless clients support v2. In the event that there are stations that
do not support v2, select the option v1. By default, the value of the setting is v2.
Management from
Wireless Clients With you select this check box, the Web Administration Interface is accessible from the Wi-Fi segment of wireless access point. By default, it is enabled.
Syslog to Remote
Server With you select this check box, logs are sent to an external Syslog server. By default, this option is disabled.
SyslogServer Address/
Port When you select Syslog to Remote Server check box (see above), you can enter the Syslog server IP address in this field and the port number in the Port field. By
default, the port number is 514.
