TheMicro-Nikkor105mmf/4isa specialtelephotolensdesignedfor
close-upphotographyathighreproductionratios.Itfeaturesthesame
opticalconstructionasthemuch-acclaimedBellows-Nikkor105mm
f/4, butwitha specialfocusinghelicoidthatenablesoperationfrom
infinity(°°)toa reproductionratioof1 : 2 (halflife-size)withoutthe
needforanyadapters.Thelensoffers"automaticmaximumaperture
indexing" (Al)withsuitablyequippedcameras,viathemeter cou-
plingridgeprovided.Theridgeandtheautodiaphragmfunctionto-
gethertopermitfullapertureexposuremeasurement;thelensisalso
fittedwitha metercouplingshoetopermitthesameoperationwith
NikoncameraswhichlacktheAlfacility.Intermsofopticalperform-
ance, theMicro-Nikkor'sexcellentflatnessoffieldisa stand-out
feature,enablingvirtuallydistortion-freeimagesatallreproduction
ratios. TheapplicationofNikonIntegratedCoating(NIC)furtheren-
hancesperformancebyincreasingimagecontrast,whilereducingflare
andghost,foroutstandingcolorreproduction.
WhentheMicro-Nikkor 1 05mmisusedwiththespecialAutoExtension
RingPN-11orPN-1,focusingisfurtherextendedfrom1 : 2 to1 : 1 for
fulllife-sizereproduction.
TogetthebestresultsfromyourMicro-Nikkor105mmf/4,readthis
instructionmanualcarefully.Keepthemanualhandyforreference
untilyouhavethoroughlyfamiliarizedyourselfwiththelensandits
operation. A fewminutesofpreparationwillhelpyouavoidcostly
mistakes.

MOUNTINGTHELENS Positionthelensinthecamera'sbayonet
mount,aligningthemountingindexesonthe
cameraandthelens.Twistthelenscounter-
clockwiseuntilitclicksintoplace.
Toremove,depressthelensreleasebuttonon
thecameraandtwistthelensclockwise.
Note: Whenmountingthelensona camerawitha
metercouplinglever(Altype),makesurethatthe
camera'smetercouplingleveriscorrectlypositioned;
whenmountingona camerawithoutthislever(non-
Altype),conventional"manual"maximumaperture
indexingisrequired.Inbothcases,refertothe
camera'sinstructionmanual.

FOCUSING
ThefullyautomaticdiaphragmoftheMicro-
Nikkorenablesfocusingwithmaximumimage
brightnessthroughouttheentirefocusingrange
ofthelens.Astheimageisconstantlyviewed
atthemaximumaperturesetting (i.e., f/4),
thedepthoffieldisminimizedsothatthe
imagesnapsinandoutoffocusrapidlyand
distinctly.
Tofocus,turnthefocusingringuntiltheimage
onthefocusingscreenappearssharpandcrisp.
Viathespecialfocusinghelicoid,theMicro-
Nikkoroperatescontinuouslyfrominfinity
(°°)to0.47m(1.55ft)fora reproduction
ratioof1:2.
Thedistancescaleon thefocusingringis
markedinbothmeters(white)andfeet (yel-
low). Thesefiguresindicatethedistancefrom
thesubjecttothecamera'sfilmplane.
Note: Theexactpositionofthefilmplaneisindicat-
edonallcamerasforconveniencewhenmeasuring.
OnNikonF/F2cameras,thetopedgeoftheserial
numberistheexactpositionoftheplane.On
otherNikonandNikkormatcameras,theplaneis
indicatedbythesymbol(-Q-)

RecommendedFocusingScreens
Nineteendifferentinterchangeablefocusing
screensareavailableforF andF2Nikon
camerastosuitanytypeoflensorpicture-
takingsituation.Thosewhicharerecommend-
edforusewiththisMicro-Nikkor105mmf/4

be1:5,andisindicatedonthereproduction

FocusingatPredeterminedRatio
Abovethedistancescaleonthefocusingring
aretworeproductionratioscalesinscribedin
orange.Theinnerscale,withfiguresfrom1:10
to1:2,representsthereproductionratiosob-
tainedwhenthelensisusedalone.Theouter
scalefigures (i.e., 1:2to1:1)representthe
ratiospossiblewhenthelensand,PN-1or
PN-11 ring, areusedtogether.Usingeitherof
thesescales,youcanphotographata pre-
determinedratiowithoutcalculatingthe
distancesrequired.Tophotographata repro-
ductionratioof1 : 5,forexample,justturn
thefocusingringuntilthenumber"5"is
alignedwiththedistancescaleindex;then
aimatthesubjectandadjustyourposition
(closeto,orfartherawayfrom,thesubject)
untiltheimageappearssharpandcrispon
thefocusingscreen.

DepthofField
Depthoffieldreferstothezoneofacceptable
focusextendinginfrontofandbehindthe
planeofsharpestfocus.Asthiszoneisexcep-
tionallyshallowathighreproductionratios,
previewingisdesirablebeforeshooting.To
preview,pressthedepth-of-fieldbuttonon
thecameraandthelenswillclosetothe
preselectedaperturetoallowyoutoseehow
muchbackgroundandforegroundisinfocus.
Depthoffieldcanalsobeobservedbyreading
thecolor-codedindicatorsinscribedonthe
lensbarrel.Thepairsofcoloredlinesoneither
sideofthewhitedistancescaleindexline
correspondtof/numbersofthesamecoloron
theaperturescale.Atclosedistances,solittle
isinfocusthatthedepth-of-fieldtableson
pages13~ 14aremoreuseful.
NOTESONFOCUSING
CameraShake:Close-upphotographyposes
severalproblemsnotencounteredingeneral
photography.Oneoftheseissensitivityto
vibration—themagnificationoftheimageisso
highthatevenslightdisplacementduring
shootingresultsina blurredimage.Therefore,
theuseofa tripodisrecommendedatall
times, withshutteractuatedviacablerelease.
Inthisrespect,theconvenient,360°rotatable
tripodmountingcollaronthePNringwill
proveuseful.
CloseWorkingDistances:Athighreproduction
ratiosencounteredduringclose-upshooting,
depthoffielddecreasesdrastically.This con-
ditioncanbepartiallycompensatedforby
stoppingdownthelens.Butatveryclose
workingdistances,anextremelyshallowdepth
offieldisinevitable.Carefulplacementofthe
camerawillbenecessarytoensurethatthe
importantsurfacesofthesubjectareinthe
samezoneofsharpness.

lensmeterofanyF/F2NikonPhotomicor
otherNikon/Nikkormatcamerasforfullaper-
tureexposuremeasurementovertheentire
rangeofaperturesettings.Notethatwhen
thislensisusedwithnon-AIcameras, con-
ventional"manual"maximumaperturein-
dexingisrequired.
Whenclose-upattachmentssuchasa PNring
orbellowsareused,theexposuremeasure-
mentmethodisshowninthetableontheleft.
Whenthelensismountedinthereverse posi-
tion, thestop-downmethodshouldbeused.

Caution: Whenthestop-downmethodisusedat
smallapertures,a findereyecupshouldbeattached
totheeyepiecetoensurecompleteexclusionof
straylight.
