TheZoom-Nikkor80-200mmf/4isa newlydesignedandimprovedversion
ofthe80-200mmf/4.5zoomlens.Itoffersa largermaximumapertureand
acloserminimumfocusingdistanceof1.2m(4ft)comparedtotheolder
lensmodel.Thelenshasanopticalconstructionof13elementsin9 groups
andanattachmentsizeof62mm.Forfaster,moreconvenienthandling,the
sameringisusedtofocusandzoom.Youturntheringtofocus,andyou
pushorpulltozoominorout.Andbecausethelenshasa higherspeed,
makingtheimageintheviewfinderbrighter,focusingiseasier.Imagequality
isup,too.Aberrationsarewellcorrected,especiallyintheshorterfocal
lengthrange.Theresultisoptimumperformance,fromtheshortesttothe
longestfocallength—crispimageswithhighcontrast,farornear.Nikon
IntegratedCoating(NIC),appliedonallair-to-glasssurfacestominimize
ghostandflare,makesfornaturalcolorrendition.Thelensoffers"automat-
icmaximumapertureindexing"(Al)withsuitablyequippedNikoncameras
(exceptF-401/N4004*)viathemetercouplingridgeprovided.Theridgeand
theautodiaphragmfunctiontogethertopermitfull-apertureexposuremeas-
urement.Toallowsimilaroperationwithnon-AItypeNikoncameras,thelens
isalsofittedwithametercouplingshoe.Additionally,there's a depth-of-field
scalewithcurvedlineswhichyoucanusetoobtaina depth-of-fieldreading
atanyfocallength.

Positionthelensinthecamera'sbayonetmount,lininguptheaperture
indexonthelenswiththelensmountingindexonthecamera.Twistthe
lenscounterclockwiseuntilitclicksintoplace.
Toremove,depressthelensreleasebuttononthecameraandtwistthelens
clockwise.

seriescamerastosuitanytypeoflensorpicture-takingsituation.Those
whicharerecommendedforusewiththisZoom-Nikkor80-200mmf/4lens
arelistedbelow.ForscreensusedwithNikoncamerasotherthanF3-and
F2-seriescameras (e.g., NikonFA,FE2,FM2andFE),refertothecolumn

screen. Astheringispushedforwardforshorterfocallengths,a five-
positionscaleisuncoveredonthelensbarreltoshowwhichfocallength
thelensissetfor.Topresetthelensfora specificfocallength,alignthe
edgeofthefocusingringwiththetopedgeofthedigits.

DEPTH-OF-FIELDSCALE
Agroupofcoloredlines,curvingouttowardthefrontofthelens,are
engravedonthelensbarrel.Tofindthedepthoffieldata particularfocal
lengthandaperture,firstcomposeandfocusthelensonthesubject.Then
checkthenumbersonthedistancescaleoppositethecoloredlinestofind
thedepthoffieldatthataperture.Thecolorsofthepairsoflines
correspondtodifferentlensapertures.Thecontinuouscurvedlinesofthe
depth-of-fieldscalegivethereadingatanyfocallength.Youcanalso
observethedepthoffieldthroughtheviewfinderbypressingthe
depth-of-fieldpreviewbuttononthecamera.
INFRAREDPHOTOGRAPHYE
Ininfraredphotography,theplaneofsharpestfocusisslightlymoredistant
thantheoneproducedbyvisiblelight.Asa ruleofthumb,youcancompen-
sateforshiftinfocusbyreferringtothecurvedredinfraredlineengraved
betweenthedepth-of-fieldindexlinesonthelensbarrel.
Aftersharplyfocusingthesubjectthroughtheviewfinder,checkthefocused
distanceandturnthefocusingringtotheleftuntiltheprefocuseddistance
figureisalignedwiththeinfraredcompensationline.Thenattachthefilter
tothelensandtakethepicture.
