2. OUTLINE OF INSTRUMENT
SIMPLIFIED EXPLANATION
This unit is the option for MA-3 Solo for the measurement of extremely low concentration
liquid samples like environmental water. The mercury contained in the liquid samples is
reduced and vaporized, and then collected to the mercury collector tube. The amount of
mercury is determined by MA-3 Solo.
SAMPLING FLOW
When sulfuric acid is added to sample and then stannous chloride solution is added, bivalent
mercury ions (Hg2+) are reduced to zerovalent metal mercury and changed to mercury gas
by bubbling. The collection concentration is carried out selectively for the mercury gas as
gold amalgam.
Hg2++SnCl2 → Hg0↑
*Acid mist and steam generated by bubbling are removed using a KOH solution and a mist
catcher because they obstruct a measurement.
* Although sample with small quantities of interfering substances, such as raw water for tap
water, can be measured only by adding sulfuric acid, it is impossible to obtain a precise and
accurate measurement result for sample containing interfering components.

BLANK PROCESS OF MERCURY COLLECTOR TUBE
Before the sampling, make sure to reduce the amount of blank of mercury collector tube.
(For the detail, refer to the instruction manual of MA-3 Solo)
OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE
During the installation, do not close the inside cylinder of the
1st impinger.
Do not insert/remove the mercury collector tube during the
measurement. It can affect the measurement result.
When handling a mercury collector tube for a measurement or
the like, take care not to get burned.
When handling, put on protectors such as heat-resistant gloves,
and use boat tongs.
The sampling method is the same for calibration curve measurement and unknown sample
measurement.
(1) Turn on MA-3 Solo and PC. Start “MA3SoloWin”.
(2) Perform the Self Check.
(3) Drip 20mL of 1mol/L KOH solution to the 2nd Impinger. Fix with the Joint Clamp.
Caution

Instruction Manual: AQUA kit for MA-3 Solo NIC-TD-0000187-01
Nippon Instruments Corporation 8
(4) Attach the mercury collector tube to the mercury collector tube connecting tube.
(5) Drip “20 mL of distilled water and standard mercury liquid” or “20mL of unknown
sample” into the impinger.
(6) Add 1 mL of 1:1 sulfuric acid and 1 mL of 10% stannous chloride solution.
(7) Select “COLLECTOR TUBE / AQUA kit” as the measurement method. Click “START”
button.
(8) Close the inside cylinder of the impinger.
*Check if it is bubbling.
If not, there is a leakage. Open the impinger inside cylinder, stop the sampling, and
fix the leakage. (Refer to 5.4 LEAK CHECK)
(9) When the measurement is completed, remove the inside cylinder of the impinger or
remove Mercury Collector Tube.
(10) Attach the mercury collector tube to the holder. Measure it with MA-3 Solo.
(For the detail, refer to the instruction manual of MA-3 Solo)
METHOD: COLLECTOR TUBE

Instruction Manual: AQUA kit for MA-3 Solo NIC-TD-0000187-01
Nippon Instruments Corporation 9
The calibration curve can be created by measuring the standard solution by the thermal
vaporization method or mercury collector tube measurement by using this unit.
However, the atomization method can be varied due to the deterioration or the filling
condition of the mercury collector tube. For the accurate measurement, create the
calibration curve by mercury collector tube measurement by using this unit.
(11) Discard the effluent after the measurement into a tank or the like, and clean the outside
cylinder and inside cylinder of the impinger.
*If the stannous chloride solution is left, mercury will volatilize during the next
measurement and a precise and accurate measurement will be impossible.
<Sampling of 2nd time and after>
Repeat step 4) - 11).
<To perform the sampling and measurement at the same time>
1) Install the mercury collector tube to measure to MA-3 Solo.
2) Perform the sampling.
3) After the measurement, remove the mercury collector tube from MA-3 Solo, and
install the mercury collector tube that has finished sampling.

CLEANING OF GLASSWARE
On returning from on-site work, be sure to carry out the alkaline cleaning and acid cleaning
of the glassware. Insufficient cleaning may cause the dispersion of measurement values.
The mercury collector tube cannot be cleaned. Perform the blank process after the usage.
(Refer to “4.4 BLANK PROCESS OF MERCURY COLLECTOR TUBE”)
(1) After rinsing the glassware with water, put the glassware in a container into which
alkaline detergent has been poured, and carry out ultrasonic cleaning for 30 minutes.
If alkaline detergent is not available, 0.1 mol/L sodium hydroxide solution will also be
effective.
If an ultrasonic cleaner is not available, keep the glassware in detergent overnight, and
then scrub the glassware using a brush.
(Brushing after ultrasonic cleaning is more effective.)
(2) After rinsing the glassware sufficiently with water, carry out ultrasonic cleaning for 30
minutes using nitric acid (1:10) in the same way.
(3) After rinsing the glassware with water, rinse the glassware with pure water.
(4) Carry out drying and keep the glassware free of dust and pollution from air.
