Using the Walking Stick
:
Walking
If using one stick only, hold in the hand
opposite the affected leg.
Walk in a normal manner placing the stick on
the ground at the same time as the affected
leg.
Stairs -Ascending
1. Hold the rail/banister in one hand and the
stick in the other.
2. Step with the ‘unaffected’leg first.
3. Push through the stick to bring up the
‘affected’leg.
4. Finally, bring up the stick.
Stairs - Descending
1. Hold the rail/banister in one hand and the
stick in the other.
2. Put the stick down to the centre of the step
below.
3. Step down with the ‘affected’leg first.
4. Finally step down with the good leg.
Please note:
If you have a rail/banister but require two sticks
to walk on the flat, hold the rail/banister as
described above and hold the spare stick
horizontally in your stick hand when you
ascend/descend the stairs.
If you have no rail and are using two sticks,
position both sticks as previously described i.e.
on descent place both sticks down first.
Chairs - Getting Up
Place the stick near the arm of the chair.
With one hand on the stick and the other on
the opposite arm of the chair, push with your
arms, lean forward and stand up using the
stick as support.
Chairs - Sitting Down
When sitting down, turn your back to the chair
feel the chair seat behind your legs, place your
hands on the chair arms, bend forward and
lower into chair. The stick can be held during
this operation or placed to one side.
