Intended use
This instrument has been designed to be used with Olympus LED light source for NBI (Narrow Band
Imaging) observation.
Instruction manual
This instruction manual contains essential information on using this instrument safely and effectively.
Before use, thoroughly review this manual and the manuals of all equipment which will be used during
the procedure and use the instruments as instructed.
Keep this and all related instruction manuals in a safe, accessible location. If you have any questions
about any information in this manual, contact Olympus.
Terms used in this manual
Important Information — Please Read Before Use
ORBEYE Surgical microscope (OME-V200)
The surgical microscope designated by Olympus to be used in combination with this
instrument.
LED light source (OME-L200)
LED-based light source designated by Olympus to be used in combination with this
instrument.
WLI (White Light Imaging) observation
This is observation using white light.
NBI (Narrow Band Imaging)
This is observation using narrow band light.
AGC (Automatic Gain Control)
Function that electrically increases the image brightness when the image brightness
becomes insufficient due to a change in the observation conditions such as the working
distance and magnification.

User qualifications
The operator of this instrument must be a physician or medical personnel under the supervision of a
physician and must have received sufficient training in clinical procedures of microsurgery using
surgical microscopes. This manual, therefore, does not explain or discuss the details of microsurgery
using surgical microscopes.
For details of microsurgery using surgical microscopes, the physician and operator are requested to
judge from their viewpoints as specialists.
Custom switch
Custom switch is a generic term for the buttons, keys, and switches to which various
functions can be assigned: the custom buttons 1 and 2 on the touch panel and scope
switches 1, 2, and 3 on the microscope section and foot switches 1 to 6 on the foot switch
unit.
Iris
Function that electrically measures the image brightness.
Automatic brightness control
Function that automatically adjusts illumination light to keep the image brightness
constant even when the observation conditions such as the working distance and
magnification change.
Color adjustment
Color adjustment adjusts the color balance and the chroma on the monitor.
Edge enhancement
Edge enhancement is an image processing technique that electrically emphasizes the
edges of an image to increase sharpness.
Structure enhancement
Structure enhancement is an image processing technique that electrically emphasizes the
detailed patterns and edges of an image to increase sharpness.

Instrument compatibility
This instrument should be used in combination with the ancillary equipment shown in “System chart”
on page 63. Using incompatible equipment can result in patient or operator injury and/or equipment
damage as well as malfunction.
This instrument complies with EMC standard for medical electrical equipment edition 4
(IEC 60601-1-2: 2014).
Spare equipment
To avoid interruption of procedure due to an unexpected event such as equipment failure in the middle
of operation, be sure to reserve the spare equipment.
Prohibition of improper repair and modification
Never allow a person other than Olympus-qualified personnel to disassemble or modify the instrument,
as this may result in injury of the patient or operator as well as damage to the equipment. Olympus will
not assume any liability for the human accident or equipment damage incurred due to repair by a
person other than Olympus-qualified personnel.
Signal words
The following signal words are used throughout this manual:
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in
death or serious injury.

Precautions
Follow the dangers, warnings, and cautions given below when handling this instrument. This
information is to be supplemented by the dangers, warnings, and cautions given in each chapter.
WARNING
• Strictly observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may place the patient
and medical personnel in danger of an electric shock.
Do not souse or spill a liquid such as water over this instrument. If a liquid is spilt
on it, immediately wipe it. Should a liquid penetrate this instrument, immediately
stop using it and contact Olympus.
Do not prepare, inspect, or use this instrument unit with wet hands.
• Never install and/or operate this instrument under the following conditions. An
explosion or a fire could occur.
The concentration of oxygen is high.
Oxidizing agents (such as nitrous oxide (N2O)) are present in the atmosphere.
Flammable anesthetics are present in the atmosphere.
Flammable liquids are near.
• Do not use this instrument in an eye surgery or a procedure in which the
illumination light would be incident directly on an eye. Otherwise, the strong
illumination light may injure the retina.
• Do not use for purposes other than those described in “Intended use” on page 2,
as this may result in injury of the patient or operator as well as damage to the
equipment.
• This instrument should be used under the conditions specified in “Environment”
on page 65. Otherwise, imperilment of safety or failure of equipment may result as
well as malfunction.
• The information obtained through NBI observation is merely reference information.
Be sure to perform a comprehensive observation of all required regions by also
using the WLI observation.
• This product may interfere with other medical electric equipment used in
combination with it. Before use, refer to “Appendix” to confirm the compatibility of
this instrument with all equipment to be used.

CAUTION
• Do not use this instrument in any place where it may be subject to strong
electromagnetic radiation (for example, in the vicinity of a microwave therapeutic
equipment, MRI, wireless set, short-wave therapeutic equipment, cellular/portable
phone, etc.). This may impair the performance of this instrument.
• Do not use this instrument in any place with strong magnetic force, or bring
magnetized equipment or magnets closer. This may impair the performance of this
instrument.
• Do not push any part of this instrument with a sharp of hard object. Otherwise,
equipment damage or failure may result.
• Connect this instrument in a dry state without contamination of electrical contacts.
Also, do not touch the electrical contacts inside the connector directly. If the
electrical contacts are dirty or used under wet conditions, the equipment may
malfunction.
• Electromagnetic interference may occur on this instrument near equipment marked
with the following symbol or other portable and mobile RF (Radio Frequency)
communications equipment such as cellular phones. If electromagnetic
interference occurs, mitigation measures may be necessary, such as reorienting or
relocating this instrument, or shielding the location.

Narrow Band Imaging (NBI)
NBI observation using an illumination light of narrow bandwidth is possible.
Refer to Section 6.2, “Operation of NBI mode”.
Adjusting the image
The following functions are provided to facilitate NBI observation.
• Set the iris sensitivity

Confirm that this instrument and its accessories are present by matching all items in the package with

Chapter 3 Installation and Connection
Prepare this instrument and the ancillary equipment according to the purpose of use as shown in
“System chart” on page 63.
Also, read the instruction manual for each piece of ancillary equipment and connect this instrument
and the ancillary equipment in the order given in this chapter.
WARNING
Before use, be sure to read this chapter and prepare the ancillary equipment
optimally. Otherwise, patient or operator injury may result as well as malfunctions of
the equipment.
CAUTION
• Be sure to turn the connected surgical microscope and the ancillary equipment
OFF before proceeding to the connection work. Otherwise, equipment failure or
malfunction may result.
• Hold this instrument and other ancillary equipment combined with it securely so as
not to drop them. Otherwise, equipment damage may result.
• Do not install this instrument in the proximity of a source of strong electromagnetic
waves (microwave therapy equipment, shortwave therapy equipment, MRI, radio,
cellphone, etc.). Otherwise, this instrument may fail.
• Install and connect this instrument on a level surface from which the surgical
microscope will not move spontaneously and lock the brake by pushing the brake
pedal. If the base moves spontaneously during work, personnel injury may result.

1Check the position of the brake pedal, push it
until it hits the back, apply the brake, and
confirm that the surgical microscope is locked
to the floor.

2Confirm that the surgical microscope and LED light source are turned OFF by
referring to their instruction manual.
3Using the provided Allen screwdriver (3 mm width across flats), loosen the lock
screws (× 2) of the unit cover of the LED light source to be connected to this unit and
detach the unit cover.

CAUTION
Always use the Allen screwdriver (3 mm width across flats) provided with this
instrument for work. Otherwise, equipment damage may result.
NOTE
The unit cover lock screws (× 2) are not separable from the unit cover even after
they are loosened.

CAUTION
• Be sure to attach the unit cover after connecting the NBI unit to the LED light
source. Otherwise, the NBI unit may be disconnected and equipment malfunction
may result.
• If the provided Allen screwdriver (3 mm width across flats) is twisted during
tightening of the lock screws (× 2), do not apply force any more. Otherwise, the
equipment and/or the provided Allen screwdriver may be damaged.
4Connect the NBI unit to the NBI unit terminal,
marked “NBI”, at the bottom of the unit
connection terminals on the LED light source.

CAUTION
• Do not apply an excessive force to the unit terminal of the LED light source and the
connector on this instrument. Otherwise, equipment damage may result.
• When connecting the NBI unit to the LED light source, be sure to connect to the
unit terminal marked “NBI”. If the NBI unit is connected to a wrong unit terminal,
equipment malfunction will result.
5Tighten the lock screws (× 2) using the provided Allen screwdriver (3 mm width across
flats) and attach the unit cover to the LED light source.

NOTE
Make sure not to lose the provided Allen screwdriver (3 mm width across flats). It
will be required when detaching the NBI unit from the LED light source for
servicing, etc.
NOTE
The NBI emblem is designed to be attached to the LED light source to which the
NBI unit is connected in order to give reference information that the NBI function is
incorporated. Although the equipment functions normally without the NBI emblem,
it is recommended to attach it to the equipment connected to the NBI unit in order
to facilitate distinction of the incorporated function.
