1. Introduction
Congratulations on choosing the ClearNote, a portable and foldable video
magnifier designed by Optelec. ClearNote is an auto-focus video
magnifier designed to assist people with low vision on different locations.
ClearNote together with a computer enables reading, writing, viewing
photos, craftwork and lots more. The ClearNote magnifier is foldable
which means that it can be folded into a compact size to take it with you
comfortably.
The ClearNote offers an enhanced ergonomic design that allows simple
operation. The ergonomics are designed for optimal efficiency when
working with a computer. The ClearNote can be operated directly from the
keyboard of your desktop or laptop computer or via the remote control.
ClearNote software is compatible with the Windows XP Service Pack 2 or
Windows Vista operating systems. The unit should be connected via an
USB 2.0 port.
If you have any questions or suggestions concerning the use of this

About this manual
This manual will familiarize you with the features and operation of the
ClearNote and ClearNote software with a computer. Please read this
manual carefully before using your device. Keep this manual in a safe
place for future reference.

2. Important safety information
Only use the ClearNote indoors.
Do not expose the ClearNote to extreme or rapid changes in
temperature or humidity. These conditions may damage the unit’s
electronics or optics.
Do not place the unit on an unstable surface. It may fall, causing
serious damage to the unit or injuries to the user.
To avoid injuries always assemble, disassemble and handle the unit
with good care as the unit contains movable and rotatable parts.
Do not expose the ClearNote to excessive heat or direct sunlight to
avoid the risk of fire.
Do not remove any parts of the ClearNote. Contact your Optelec
distributor to service the ClearNote if necessary. Do not open your
unit as this will void the warranty. The unit contains no user-
serviceable parts.
To avoid risk of electrical damage, keep your ClearNote away from
fluids and chemicals
Handle the ClearNote with care. Rough handling will damage the
internal components
Do not use the ClearNote near inadequately shielded medical
devices.
Always unplug the unit before cleaning. Use a soft damp cloth to
clean the exterior. Do not use cleaning agents or abrasive materials
as they will damage the unit.
Do not use the unit under +0° or above +40° Celsius.
Use of the ClearNote other than described in this manual will exclude it
from warranty conditions.

4. Installing the ClearNote software
Important: Install the ClearNote software before connecting your unit to a
computer.
The ClearNote software is necessary to use the ClearNote with your
computer. Therefore the ClearNote software and image reproduction
program must be installed on your laptop or desktop computer.
The installation can be completed in the following steps:
1. Make sure that the ClearNote USB cable is not connected to your
computer.
2. Insert the ClearNote software CD-ROM that came with the
package in your computer’s disk drive.
3. The program will automatically run if the autostart feature of your
CD-ROM drive is enabled.
a. If the autostart feature has not been enabled, open your
Windows Start Menu and select ‘Run’.
b. Alternatively you can double click the CD drive icon in ‘My
Computer’.
c. Select your preferred language and click “Next”.
d. Click “Next” in the ‘Welcome to Setup Wizard’
e. Choose the destination folder and click “Next”.
f. Select the software magnification program that runs on your
computer. If you have not installed magnification software,
please select “default” installation.
g. Click “Next” in the ‘Select Start Menu folder.
h. Select “Install the camera driver” and choose your preferred
desktop icons;
i. Click on “Install”;
j. Click on “Finish” to complete the setup.
4. Now connect the ClearNote USB cable to a USB ports on your
computer;
5. The screen will say ”new hardware found”. Install the USB driver
by selecting “do not look for updates” when asked on the screen.
In the next screen choose for “automatic installation of the USB
driver”.
6. If the "files needed" screen appears looking for a driver, it is in:
C:\Program files\ClearNote 7\driver, unless you installed it in
another subfolder.
7. Repeat the actions from step 6 till you installed the ClearNote for
all possible USB ports on your computer.
8. Start the Software by clicking the ClearNote 7 icon on your
desktop or in the Windows Start Menu.
When carrying out the standard installation, you will find the program files
under C:\Program Files\ClearNote 7

5. Getting to know your ClearNote
Assembling the ClearNote
Important: Install the ClearNote software before you connect your unit to
a computer. Refer to chapter 5 for information on how to install the
ClearNote software
To assemble your ClearNote unit please follow the steps described below:
1. Place the base plate nearby your computer on a steady surface.
2. Unfold the ClearNote unit.
3. Place the ClearNote on the connection point of the base plate.
4. Connect the remote control to the camera stand.
5. If you have already installed the ClearNote software connect the
ClearNote output cable (USB 2.0) to your desktop or laptop
computer. To read about the installation of the ClearNote software
please read the next chapter.
Using ClearNote with a laptop
Place your laptop on the ClearNote base plate and connect the USB cable
in your computer’s USB 2.0 port. The ClearNote can be positioned either
left or right of your laptop or desktop PC.
Positioning the camera head
ClearNote features an ultra-flexible camera that can be rotated around a
horizontal and vertical axis. Point the camera to a document for close-up
viewing. Alternatively, position the camera horizontally for distance or self-
viewing. The flexible camera head approaches a view of approximately
360º.
Camera positions
The ClearNote automatically re-adjusts to its original settings when the
camera is turned from near to distance viewing and back. For example
when you tilt the camera quickly from a whiteboard to your desktop, your
preferred viewing mode and magnification settings will automatically be
applied. Three sets of settings can be stored: document viewing, distance
viewing and looking behind you.
Close-up and distance viewing
The position of the camera unit can be adjusted for desktop or distance
viewing. To view objects within 25 cm, position the close-up lens in front
of the camera unit. To view objects at a larger distance, position the close-
up lens away from the camera.

6. Operation with the remote control
To use the ClearNote application make sure to connect the ClearNote to
the computer via the USB cable and start the ClearNote software.
Click the close (x) button in the upper right corner of the ClearNote
window to close the ClearNote application.
Basic functions
Setting the magnification
Pressing the two trapezium shaped buttons allows you
to select the magnification levels. ClearNote magnifies
text and images from 4 to 40 times the original size.
Pressing the “-” button will decrease the
magnification. Pressing the “+“ button will increase
the magnification.
Viewing modes
Pressing this button will cycle you through 3 viewing modes:
1- Photo mode Full colour
This mode will display texts, pictures and objects in full colour.
2- Reading mode
This mode enhances the foreground / background contrast. Pictures
and text will be displayed in black text and white background.
3- Inverse Reading mode
This mode inverses the chosen background and foreground colour
combinations. Pictures and text will be displayed in white text on a
black background.
