WEEE Notice
The directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), which entered into force as
European law on 13
th
February 2003, resulted in a major change in the treatment of electrical
equipment at end-of-life.
The purpose of this Directive is, as a first priority, the prevention of WEEE, and in addition, to promote
the reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery of such wastes so as to reduce disposal.
The WEEE logo (shown at the left) on the product or its box indicates that this product must
not be disposed of or dumped with your other household waste. You are liable to dispose of
all your electronic or electrical waste equipment by relocating over to the specified collection
point for recycling of such hazardous waste. Isolated collection and proper recovery of your
electronic and electrical waste equipment at the time of disposal will allow us to help
conserving natural resources. Moreover, proper recycling of the electronic and electrical
waste equipment will ensure safety of human health and environment. For more information
about electronic and electrical waste equipment disposal, recovery, and collection points,
please contact your local city centre, household waste disposal service, shop from where
you purchased the equipment, or manufacturer of the equipment.

1. Introduction
Congratulations on choosing the Compact
+
, a pocketsize electronic video magnifier designed
by Optelec.
Optelec’s pocketsize electronic magnifier enlarges, with magnification up to 10 times, and
enhances printed text and on a 4.3” wide screen display.
With its one button simplicity, controlling both magnification and viewing modes, the Compact
+
offers an enhanced design that extends in operating comfort. It is designed for every day use at
any location.

2. Getting to know your Compact
+
When the unit is placed correctly in front of you the display will be facing up and the round
magnification / mode button is at the right side of the unit.

Snapshot button The snapshot button allows you to temporarily freeze an image
on the screen of an object or text that may be at arm’s length,
enabling you to bring the image closer to your eyes

DC IN 5V jack The AC power adapter cable connects to this jack. Use only
the model of AC adapter that comes with the Compact
+
. Use of
an adapter other than that supplied with the unit automatically
voids the warranty.

3. Getting started
Placing the batteries
The Compact
+
battery pack supplied with the unit consists of two AA rechargeable batteries.
We strongly advise you not to remove, open or disassemble the plastic sealing of the
battery pack. Removing this sealing might cause malfunctioning of the batteries.
Install the battery pack as follows:
- Turn the unit upside down
- Press the small half-oval tab at the far end to release the cover of the battery
compartment
- Lift the cover
- Install the battery pack
- Replace the cover of the battery compartment
- Gently press down to lock, until you hear a click

Turning the power on / off
Switch the unit on and off by pressing the orange button, located at the right side of the unit, for
half a second. By default the Compact
+
will start in high contrast white on black (negative) text
mode.
Using the magnification button
To set the magnification, simply turn the lever of the round button, located next to the
display. Placing the unit on a flat surface, allows you to select one of the three
magnification levels; 5X, 7.5X or 10X. Lifting the unit, allows you to lower the
magnification which is useful to obtain an overview of the object or text being viewed.
Selecting a viewing mode
Pressing the round mode button, located next to the display, allows you to select one
of the five viewing modes.
- Negative mode: reading in high contrast white on black
- Positive mode: reading in high contrast black on white
- Photo mode: view full color text and photos
- High contrast yellow text on a black background: reading in high contrast yellow on
black
- High contrast yellow text on a blue background: reading in high contrast yellow on blue

Pressing the round mode button for approximately one second, allows you to switch object
lighting off. Object lighting can be turned on and off in each of the above mentioned viewing
modes, facilitating reading of glossy magazines, displays and screens. Pressing the mode
button for one second again, will switch object lighting back on, whereas selecting the next
viewing mode by a short press of the mode button will turn the lighting on too.
Using the snapshot button
The snapshot button allows you to temporary freeze an image on the
screen.
- Hold or place the Compact
+
over the text or image
- Press the oval shaped snapshot button, located at the front side of the unit
- Bring the unit closer to your eyes to view the object or text
- Turn the lever, located next to the display, to change the magnification
- Press the viewing mode button, in the centre of the magnification dial, to change the
viewing mode
- Press the snapshot button again to unfreeze the image

Writing with the Compact
+
The Compact
+
has an integrated writing facility. Take the unit in your
hand and turn it upside down (display facing down)
- Slide the battery compartment away from you (see picture)
- Put the unit back on your paper (display facing up)
- Press the Compact
+
down on the side of the magnification /
mode button to tilt the Compact+ upwards on one side
- Place your pen under the raised side and you can start writing
Slide the battery compartment to its original position to return to the reading mode.
Using the Compact
+
handle
The Compact
+
has a collapsible, swing out handle; giving
you the feeling you are using a regular magnifying glass.
Simply pull the handle, located on the underside, to
release the handle and swing it out to eventually snap in
place. The collapsible handle gives you extra support and
control for optimal reading comfort.

4. Power and battery use
When the AC power adapter is not connected, the Compact
+
power source is a battery pack of
two rechargeable AA batteries. Off-the-shelf AA batteries can also be used, either rechargeable
or disposable. Out of concern for the environment and superior power, we advise you to use
rechargeable batteries.
Charging the batteries
To charge the Compact+ battery pack, connect the adapter supplied with the unit to the DC IN
5V jack, located on the front side. Plug the other side into a power outlet. The orange LED
indicator next to the adapter socket will glow continuously while the battery pack is charging.
When the battery pack is fully charged the orange LED light will switch off. If the LED indicator
starts to flash, it means there is a charge problem. Disconnect the adapter, check if the battery
pack is placed correctly in the compartment and try again.
Charging the Compact
+
takes approximately five hours. A fully charged Compact
+
will operate
for approximately two hours and thirty minutes. Please note that, for safety reasons, only the
batteries that came with the Compact
+
can be charged in the unit’s battery compartment.

For optimal battery life please do not charge the Compact
+
before the “battery empty”
( ) warning is displayed on the screen. Frequent charging of a full battery pack may
damage the battery and reduce its lifetime.
System Auto Off
The Compact
+
will automatically turn off if it is not used for a period of 4 minutes. Pressing the
orange button at the left side will switch the unit on again.

Appendix A: Safety
•Do not expose the Compact
+
to excessive heat or direct sunlight to avoid the risk of fire.
•Do not remove any parts of the Compact
+
. Contact an Optelec authorized service
organisation in your area.
•To avoid risk of electrical damage, keep your Compact
+
away from fluids and chemicals.
•Handle the Compact
+
with care. Rough handling will damage the internal components.
•Do not use the Compact
+
near inadequately shielded medical devices.
•Contact your dealer to service this equipment if necessary. Do not open your unit as it will
void the warranty.
•Always unplug the system before cleaning. Use a soft damp cloth to clean the exterior. Do
not use cleaning agents or abrasive materials as they will damage your unit.
•Use only the supplied power adapter.
•Do not remove the battery pack when the device is charging.
Use of the Compact
+
other than described in this manual will exclude it from warranty
conditions.
