You have purchased a high-quality product which can be put to versatile, daily use at home and outdoors.
In order to exclude injuries of any type, familiarise yourself with the handling, functions and use of the product
before using it. These instructions for use provide the necessary information.
Please note the following in particular:
• All users must be instructed in the use of the product by qualified personnel or an attendant (person who oper
ates and pushes the product) with the help of these instructions for use.
• Attendants should also be instructed in the use of the product by qualified personnel with the help of these
instructions for use.
• The product has been adapted to the needs of the user. Further changes may be made only by qualified per
sonnel. We recommend checking the product settings regularly in order to assure an optimum fit over the long
term. For growing children and youths in particular, fitting should be performed every six months.
• In case of questions or problems, please consult the qualified personnel that adapted the product or the manu
facturer's service (see inside back cover or back page for addresses).
• The product may be combined only with the options listed here. The manufacturer assumes no liability for com
binations with third-party medical devices and/or accessories not included in the modular system. Please also
observe the information in the section "Liability".
• Service and repairs to the product may only be carried out by qualified personnel. If you have any problems,
please contact your specialist dealer. This ensures that any necessary repairs will be made exclusively with
Ottobock spare parts.
• Your product may differ from the models shown. In particular, not all the options described in these instruc
tions for use will be installed on your product.
• The manufacturer reserves the right to make technical changes to the model described in these instructions for

2 Product Description
2.1 Function
The discoverytmax is intended exclusively for the adaptation of orthopaedic seating systems (e.g. seating shells) for
people who are unable to walk or have walking impediments. It can be operated either by the user or by an attend
ant.
The discoverytmax can be used indoors and outdoors. In order to provide an optimised, individual fitting, it is
adjustable and/or adaptable.

3.2 General Safety Instructions
INFORMATION
All safety instructions in this document apply to the user and/or the attendant.
The attendant must be physically and mentally able to operate the product and understand the instructions for
use.
CAUTION

►Read the instructions for use before using the product.
►Familiarise yourself with the handling, functions and use of the product before using it. You can compromise
the safety of the user if you do not follow these instructions.
3.3 Safety Instructions for Use
Hazards due to incorrect behaviour of the attendant
WARNING
Neglecting the duty to supervise
Risk of tipping, falling
►Never leave the user unattended, not even when the safety belts are secured and the knee lever wheel lock is
activated.
CAUTION
Unallowable use in sports activities
Risk of tipping, falling
►Do not use the wheelchair for sports activities (e.g. jogging).
Hazards when preparing for use
WARNING
Independent modification of settings
Risk of tipping, falling or malposition
►Do not modify the settings established by the qualified personnel. Only the settings described in the section
"Usage" in these instructions for use may be adjusted independently.
►In case of problems with the settings (unsatisfactory seating position, front wheels wobble etc.) please con
tact the qualified personnel who adjusted your product.
►Discuss all changes to the settings with the qualified personnel/therapist in advance in order to minimise
health hazards and avoid putting the therapy results at risk.
NOTICE
Failure to observe torque specifications
Components coming loose
►The torque specifications in these instructions for use are the optimum values for tightening specific screw
connections. A torque wrench with Nm setting must be used for connections on this product.

CAUTION
Improper assembly of the removable wheels
Risk of the user falling or tipping over
►After each assembly, verify the proper fit of the removable wheels. The quick-release axles must be firmly
locked in the wheel attachment.

While installing add-on drives on the product is generally not permitted, it can be reviewed by our Custom Fabric
ation department on request.

Hazards during seat tilt operation (seat angle adjustment)
CAUTION
Incorrect seat tilt handling
Risk of tipping over, falling from the seating shell/seating system
►Before operating the seat tilt feature (seat angle adjustment), practise without the seated user.
►Only operate the seat tilt feature on a level, firm surface.
►Always activate the anti-tipper before operating the seat tilt feature (seat angle adjustment).
►Lower the seat tilt (horizontal neutral position of the seat) before negotiating slopes and obstacles. It is advis
able to slightly tilt the seat to the rear when driving downhill.
►Only negotiate slopes where the holding forces remain manageable.
►Never use the locking pedal or locking lever to operate the seat tilt feature (seat angle adjustment) in an
uncontrolled manner.
►When activating the locking pedal or locking lever, always secure the user against falling out to the front or
rear. Keep a firm grip on the push handles while activating the locking pedal or locking lever until the adjust
ment system audibly engages on both sides.
►Do not reach into the adjustment mechanism when changing the seat tilt settings.
►If equipped with a locking lever: prevent the lever from getting caught in the Bowden cable (see fig.18), as
this can result in release of the seat tilt feature.

►When using the seat tilt feature, do not reach between the seat tube and frame.
►When braking, do not reach between the wheel and wheel lock.
►Do not reach into the wheel spokes.
►Avoid pinching when moving/locking the footrests.
►Avoid pinching on the side or frame components.
Hazards when travelling
CAUTION
Travelling without experience
Risk of falling, tipping of the user
►Familiarise yourself with the wheelchair by practicing on level, easy terrain first.
►Learn with the support of an assistant how the wheelchair reacts to changes in centre of gravity, e.g. down
ward or upward slopes, inclines or when overcoming obstacles.
►Always activate the anti-tipper.
CAUTION
Incorrect centre of gravity
Risk of user tipping, rolling over
►When reaching for objects, the user must not lean too far out of the seat.
►Put the seat tilt into neutral position (0-5°) before negotiating slopes and obstacles on slopes or ramps.
►Always provide support to the rear when negotiating slopes and obstacles on slopes or ramps.
►Do not move the product with a negative seat angle setting (seat tilted forward).
►Never park the product on slopes with the user in the seat.
CAUTION
Risky operation
The user may fall or tip over, and may cause accidents with other traffic participants
►Push slowly when crossing obstacles (e.g. steps, curbs) and negotiating uphill or downhill slopes and
inclines.
►Never cross obstacles at an angle. Always approach obstacles head on (at an angle of 90°).
►Raise the front wheels before crossing obstacles.
►Avoid collisions with obstacles and dropping off curbs/ledges.
►Avoid driving cross-country.
CAUTION
Improper use of the wheel lock
Falling due to abrupt braking, rolling away of the wheelchair, crushing the hands
►Do not use the knee lever wheel lock as a driving brake.
►Always engage the wheel lock on both sides.
►When parking on uneven ground or during transfers (e.g. into a car), secure the wheelchair by activating the
knee lever wheel lock.
►Do not reach between the rear wheel and the knee lever wheel lock when driving the wheelchair.
►Ensure the knee lever wheel lock is properly adjusted (approx. 5 mm gap to the tyres, technical changes
reserved) and the tyre pressure is sufficient.

Hazards when crossing obstacles
WARNING
Driving on slopes, over obstacles
Risk of falling, tipping
►Do not negotiate slopes or inclines with an angle greater than 9° uphill and 10° downhill.
►Before negotiating slopes or crossing obstacles, the seat tilt must be lowered (horizontal neutral position of
the seat). The seat can be tilted back slightly when driving downhill.
►Only negotiate slopes where the holding forces remain manageable.
►Approach obstacles at right angles and drive over them at one go.
►When tipping on the rear wheels, always secure the user towards the rear.
►Avoid embarking and disembarking on inclines and slopes.
WARNING
Negotiating stairs and obstacles
Risk of falling, tipping over
►Only negotiate stairs and obstacles with the help of additional attendants.
►Use available equipment (e.g. ramps or elevators).
►Never use escalators with a user in the product.
WARNING
Improper lifting by attendants
Risk of falling, tipping
►Only grasp the product on firmly mounted components (e.g. main frame, push handles).
►Be sure that the clamping levers of the height-adjustable push handles are firmly tightened.
WARNING
Improper use of the anti-tipper by attendants
Falling, tipping over backwards
►Ensure that an installed anti-tipper is activated before crossing obstacles (lowered curbs) and on slopes.
Depending on the seating centre of gravity setting, large or unmanageable holding forces can be required
when the anti-tipper is deactivated.
►The anti-tipper has to engage audibly prior to use. Verify its firm fit.
►Always deactivate the anti-tipper before negotiating high curbs or steps so that it cannot strike the obstacle
since this could damage it.
►If you believe the anti-tipper needs to be adjusted, please contact the qualified personnel that adapted the
product.
Hazards due to incorrect air pressure/defective tyres
CAUTION
Incorrect air pressure
Risk of falling, uncontrolled driving characteristics, tyre rupture
►Maintain sufficient air pressure. Do not exceed the maximum specifications when filling the tyres (see the
chapter "Technical Data").
►Do not use the wheelchair with over/under-inflated or unequally inflated tyres.
►Note that a single tyre with low air pressure can lead to uncontrolled driving characteristics.
►Note that low rear tyre pressure can reduce the braking force of the knee lever wheel lock.
CAUTION
Defective tyres
Risk of accidents/falling due to poor traction, reduced braking force or lack of manoeuvrability
►Ensure that the tyres have sufficient tread depth.
►Ensure that the knee lever wheel lock is properly adjusted (approx. 5 mm gap to the tyres, technical changes
reserved).

Hazard in case of broken skin
CAUTION
Prolonged contact with broken skin
Redness and pressure marks
►Check before using the product that the skin is not broken in areas subject to prolonged pressure (e.g., but
tocks, back and rear side of the thighs).
►No liability is assumed for injuries caused by the use of the product with broken skin.
Hazards due to fire, heat and cold
CAUTION
Seat cushions, padding and upholstery catching on fire
Burns
►The seat cushions, padding and upholstery are not highly flammable but can catch fire. Therefore utmost cau
tion is required near any sources of open flame or sparks.
►Keep away from any sources of fire, especially burning cigarettes.
CAUTION
Extreme temperatures
Risk of hypothermia or burns on components, failure of components
►Do not expose the product to any extreme temperatures (e.g. direct sunlight, sauna, extreme cold).
Hazards due to improper use of the wheelchair
WARNING
Overloading
Severe injuries if the wheelchair tips over due to overloading, damage to the product
►Do not exceed the maximum load capacity (see the nameplate and section "Technical data").
►Please note that certain options and add-on components will reduce the remaining load capacity.
WARNING
Exceeding the service life
Serious injuries due to failure to observe the manufacturer's requirements
►Using the product beyond the specified expected service life (see Page38) leads to increased residual risk
and should only take place subject to the due diligence and deliberations of qualified personnel.
►If the service life is reached, the user or a responsible attendant should contact the qualified personnel who
fitted the product or the manufacturer's service (see inside rear cover or back page for address). Here the
user can obtain information about known risks and the current options for refurbishing the product.
NOTICE
Use under incorrect environmental conditions
Risk of damage to the product
►Do not use the product in salt water.
►If possible, prevent sand or other dirt particles from coming into contact with the wheel bearings and locking
mechanism.
NOTICE
Wear of seat cushions, padding and upholstery

4 Delivery
4.1 Scope of Delivery
The product is usually delivered pre-assembled, with the rear wheels removed (in case of the plug-on version). The
scope of delivery includes:
• Pre-assembled wheelchair
• 2 rear wheels (screwed or plug-on)
• Footrests
• Instructions for Use (User)
The seating shell/seating system is adapted to the wheelchair on site by the qualified personnel making the deliv
ery.
4.2 Standard Equipment
The standard equipment includes:
• Adjustable main frame
• Angle-adjustable seat frame
• Adjustable back
• Push handles
• Footrests
• Side panels
• Rear wheels
• Adjustable wheel adapter
• Caster wheel in caster fork with threaded axle
• Wheel lock
4.3 Options
The basic equipment may have been adapted to the needs of the user by adding options. For the use of these
options, please see section "Use".
4.4 Storage
The wheelchair must be stored in a dry place. An ambient temperature between -10°C and +40°C must be main
tained.

Delivery

During extended storage, the knee lever wheel lock on wheelchairs with PU tyres must be released since tyre
deformation may otherwise result.
Note regarding the tyres
• Tires contain chemical substances that can react with other chemical substances (such as cleaning agents,
acids, etc.).
• Direct exposure to sunlight or UV radiation causes the tyres to age more quickly. As a result, the tread surface
hardens and corner pieces break out of the tread.
• Avoid unnecessary parking outdoors. The tyres should be replaced every 2 years regardless of wear and tear.
5 Preparation for Use
5.1 Assembly
CAUTION
Failure to verify readiness of use prior to putting into operation

►Before you start using the product for the first time, check the chosen product settings with the support of
qualified personnel.
►Verify the proper fit of the rear wheels with quick-release axle each time they are installed. The quick-release
axles must be firmly locked in the wheel adapter.
►Check the seating position centre of gravity. It must be set so that activating the seat adjustment locking pedal
allows the seat to be adjusted easily. Contact the qualified personnel if necessary.
→Centre of gravity too far forward: the user could tip forward when the seat is tilted.
→Centre of gravity too far back: the user could tip backwards when the seat is tilted.
►In particular, verify tip resistance, easy operation of the wheels and correct brake functionality.
►For pneumatic tyres: check the tyre pressure. For the correct air pressure, see the chapter "Technical Data".
Ensure that the pressure is the same in both tyres.
►Verify that the knee lever wheel lock settings are correct (approx. 5 mm gap to the tyre, technical changes
reserved).

A few simple steps are sufficient for preparing the wheelchair for use:
1) For plug-on rear wheels: slide the rear wheels onto the wheel attachments of the wheel adapters (see fig.3,
see fig.4). The quick-release axles must not be able to be removed after the push-button has been released.
2) Slide the footrests into the holders on the front frame tube (see Page26).
3) Insert the anti-tipper in the active position (anti-tipper rollers facing down):
→Push in the rear locking pin (see fig.5).
→Insert the anti-tipper (see fig.6).
→Release the locking pin. The front locking pin must engage audibly. Visually check that the pin is engaged.
→For activating/deactivating the anti-tipper see Page32.
4) Mount the seating shell/seating system:
→Ottobock Shape System: mounted prior to delivery by the qualified personnel that adapted the wheelchair.
→Seat board: the seat cushion is secured against sliding by pushing it onto the hook-and-loop closures.
→Seating systems from other manufacturers: mounted according to the individual specifications of the qualified
personnel.
WARNING
Improper adaptation of third-party seating systems
Risk of falling, tipping over, serious injuries
►The safe adaptation of a third-party seating system is the sole responsibility of the qualified personnel provid
ing the fitting. The qualified personnel must complete these tasks according to the manufacturer's specifica
tions. Ottobock assumes no liability in case of problems with third-party seating systems.

6 Usage
6.1 Techniques for Using a Wheelchair
INFORMATION
Please also read the safety instructions in section 3.3 prior to operation.
Information and practical tips on fundamental techniques for using the wheelchair can be found in the brochure
"Techniques for Using a Wheelchair" supplied with the product.
Should the brochure not be included with the product, it can be ordered under order number 646D60. Further

6.2 Boarding/Transfer

Getting in/transferring into the wheelchair is described below.
The wheelchair is designed for people who normally cannot get into it by themselves. Getting in/transferring is
therefore described with the support of a helper.
1) Bring the wheelchair as close as possible to the chair/bed.
2) Engage the knee lever wheel locks on the wheelchair (see fig.7).
3) Fold up the footplates and swing them away if necessary (see fig.8, see fig.9).
4) Bring the seat into a horizontal position.
5) Carry out the transfer into the wheelchair from the front:
→INFORMATION: Find the most suitable method by practising with the user. If possible, use a trans
fer aid (lifter, transfer board).
→If the user does not have the necessary physical abilities due to the disability, an attendant should support
the user.
→After gripping frame components or the arm rest, the user may be able to pull him or herself onto the seat
independently or support the transfer (see fig.10, item 1–3).
6) Fold the footplates down, position the feet on the footplates and secure them if necessary.
7) Release the knee lever wheel locks.
→The wheelchair can now be used.

6.3 Information on Use

►For all changes to settings not described in these instructions for use, contact the qualified personnel that
adapted the product.
►Users or attendants are not supposed to remove/install components of the product.
6.3.1 Seat/Seating System
6.3.1.1 Use of various seating systems
The product can be equipped with various seating systems:
• Ottobock Shape System: seating shell with seat adapted to the body
• Seat plate to hold a seat cushion in combination with an Ottobock back system, e.g. The Back, Backster (see
fig.11)
• Leckey KIT or Leckey Mygo seating system (see fig.12)
• Seating system/back system from another manufacturer (Ottobock assumes no liability in this case: Liability).
All seating system settings have already been adapted/adjusted to the needs of the user by the qualified personnel
when the product was delivered.
When the product is handed over to the user, the qualified personnel instructs the user in the use of the chosen
seating system.

6.3.1.2 Adjusting the Seat/Seating System Angle
CAUTION
Incorrect seat tilt handling
Risk of tipping over, falling from the seating shell/seating system
►Before operating the seat tilt feature (seat angle adjustment), practise without the seated user.
►Only operate the seat tilt feature on a level, firm surface.
►Always activate the anti-tipper before operating the seat tilt feature (seat angle adjustment).
►Lower the seat tilt (horizontal neutral position of the seat) before negotiating slopes and obstacles. It is advis
able to slightly tilt the seat to the rear when driving downhill.
►Only negotiate slopes where the holding forces remain manageable.
►Never use the locking pedal or locking lever to operate the seat tilt feature (seat angle adjustment) in an
uncontrolled manner.
►When activating the locking pedal or locking lever, always secure the user against falling out to the front or
rear. Keep a firm grip on the push handles while activating the locking pedal or locking lever until the adjust
ment system audibly engages on both sides.
►Do not reach into the adjustment mechanism when changing the seat tilt settings.
►If equipped with a locking lever: prevent the lever from getting caught in the Bowden cable (see fig.18), as
this can result in release of the seat tilt feature.
The seat can be adjusted from -5° to +50° in increments of 2.5° (seat tilt). The seat tilt can be released with a lock
ing pedal using the foot (see fig.14) or optionally by means of a locking lever using the hand (see fig.15):
1) Grasp the push handles/push bar (see fig.13).
2) If operating by foot, release the locking pedal (see fig.14, item 1) with your foot. Push the locking mechanism
to the stop in order to do so.
3) Operate the locking pedal (see fig.14, item 2) or locking lever (see fig.15) to release the locking mechanism.
4) Bring the seat to the desired angle by moving the push handles/push bar (see fig.16). The angle can be read
from the angle indicator on the hole channel.
5) When the locking pedal or locking lever is released, the locking mechanism re-engages automatically.
INFORMATION: Listen for the sound it makes when it engages. If necessary, move the push handles
or push bar up and down slightly in order to align the locking mechanism so that the locking pins on
both sides can engage in the bore holes exactly.
6) Check that the locking pedal or locking lever is locked by lightly pressing it.
7) Visually check that the locking pins have engaged properly.
→The locking pins have to protrude slightly past the perforated plate (see fig.17, item 1).
→The locking pins must be in the same angle position on both sides.

Tilt limiter
The qualified personnel may have mounted a tilt limiter on the adjustment mechanism for medical reasons (see
fig.19, arrow). This limits the maximum angle to which the attendant can tilt the seat.
Changes to this setting may only be made by qualified personnel.
1) By moving the push handles or push bar, adjust the seat to the maximum angle (the tilt limiter hits the locking
plate guide).
2) After reaching the maximum angle (the tilt limiter hits the locking plate guide), tilt the seat back sightly so that
the locking pins engage properly (see fig.20, arrows).
CAUTION! Listen for the sound it makes when it engages. If necessary, move the push handles or
push bar up and down slightly in order to align the locking mechanism so that the locking pins on
both sides can engage in the bore holes exactly.

6.3.1.3 Adjusting the Back Angle
CAUTION
Change in centre of gravity following back angle adjustment
The user may fall out
►After each modification of the back angle, check the tilt stability. To do so, hold the product with both hands
by the push handle.
The backrest can be adjusted as needed by using the following options:
Angle-adjustable back with tension strap
1) If necessary: remove the securing clamps on both sides (see fig.21).
2) Pull on the backrest release strap (see fig.22).
3) Fold the backrest backwards or forwards (see fig.23) to one of the four possible positions (see fig.22).
4) Let go of the release strap.
INFORMATION: Each lock-release pin must audibly click into place in one of the four holes.
5) Make sure the backrest is secure by giving it a few short tugs.
6) Visually check that the lock-release pins are in the same angle position on both sides.
7) Only necessary when using in vehicles for transporting persons with reduced mobility: insert the secur
ing clamps into the holes on both sides (see fig.24).
WARNING! Always set the back angle vertically to 90° when transporting in vehicles for transporting
persons with reduced mobility.

Angle-adjustable back with pin
1) Press the pin on both back tubes (see fig.25, item1) and pull them out (see fig.25, item2).
2) Swivel the back tubes forwards or backwards or fold them down completely (see fig.25, item3).
3) Re-insert the pin into both back tubes:
→Press the pin in (see fig.26, item1).
→Slide the pin in all the way to the stop (see fig.26, item2).
→Release the pin.
4) Visually check the pins inserted into each side:
