1 General information
INFORMATION

product.
Follow the safety instructions to avoid injuries and dam-
age to the product.
Have yourself instructed by qualied personnel in the
proper and safe use of the product.

1.1 Preface
These instructions for use provide the user as well as his or
her attendants with all the required knowledge on the de-
sign, function, operation and maintenance of the ParaGolfer
sports wheelchair from Ottobock. The instructions contain
all the information that is needed to use the sports wheel-
chair safely, to determine the possible causes of a malfunc-
tion and to help eliminate it.
Knowledge of these instructions for use is absolutely neces-
sary to ensure safe use of the sports wheelchair. Therefore,
the user and his or her attendants must read the instructions
for use thoroughly, especially the section "Safety Instru-
cions”, before using the sports wheelchair. This ensures the
functionality of the sports wheelchair is fully utilised.

General information
ParaGolfer
1.2 Intended use
The sports wheelchair is designed solely for persons who
are unable to work or have a walking impediment for doing
indoor or outdoor sports that require an upright body posi-
tion. The ParaGolfer was specially designed for users who
are able to independently move in a sports wheelchair.
Any other use is considered improper use. The manufactur-
er is not liable for any personal injury or damage to property
resulting from improper use; in such cases, the user has
sole liability.
The ParaGolfer has been developed in accordance with the
requirements of the wheelchair standard EN 12184. The
values required there (Category C) for safe inclination, ob-
stacle height, speed, etc. are reached or exceeded.
The sports wheelchair may only be combined with the op-
tions mentioned in these instructions for use and vice versa.
Ottobock assumes no liability for combinations with medical
devices and/or accessories from other manufacturers out-
side of the modular system.
The sports wheelchair may only be used by properly trained
persons. Training users and attendants to use the sports
wheelchair is required in order to protect persons from dan-
ger and to ensure that the sports wheelchair is operated
safely and correctly.
The operational safety of the sports wheelchair can only be
ensured if it is used properly in accordance with the informa-
tion contained in these instructions for use. The user is ulti-
mately responsible for accident-free operation.
1.3 Field of application
The functions of the sports wheelchair make it suitable for
users who have walking impediments or walking inabilities
due to the following diseases:
Paraplegia
Spina bida
Cerebral paresis
Multiple sclerosis
Muscular dystrophy
Polio

1.4 Technical service
INFORMATION
Service and repairs on the sports wheelchair must be car-
ried out exclusively by experts at specialist dealers who
have been authorised and trained by Ottobock. Should
any problems arise, please contact your sports wheel-
chair supplier.
Should you have any questions or a problem that cannot be
resolved despite using the instructions for use, please con-
tact Ottobock Customer Service (see back side of cover for
address).
Ottobock endeavours to support their customers in all re-
spects in order to keep them satised with their product for
a long time.

2.2 Standards and directives
All information on safety contained in these instructions for
use refers to the currently valid national laws and regula-
tions of the European Union. In other countries, compliance
with the applicable laws and national regulations is re-
quired.
In addition to the safety instructions contained in these in-
structions for use, the user is required to observe and com-
ply with the BGV (Employer’s Liability Insurance Association
regulations), UVV (accident prevention regulations) and en-
vironmental protection regulations. All information contained
in these instructions for use must be complied with at all
times without restrictions.
The sports wheelchair has been constructed in accordance
with state-of-the-art technology and is safe to operate. The
safety of the ParaGolfer has been conrmed by CE certi-
cation and the declaration of conformity.
2.3 General safety instructions
WARNING
Risk of suffocation. Packaging materials must be kept
out of reach of children.
WARNING
Risk of accidents and injury due to improper use in road
traffic. The sports wheelchair has not been approved by
Ottobock for driving in public road trafc.
CAUTION
Risk of accidents and injury by failure to comply with
the safety instructions. All safety instructions contained
in these instructions for use and in all other applicable
documents must be observed and complied with. The in-
structions for use must be available to the user at all times.
CAUTION
Risk of accidents and injury due to improper use. The
sports wheelchair may only be used in accordance with
the guidelines for proper use. The sports wheelchair may
only be used by properly trained persons. The sports
wheelchair may only be used to transport one person at a
time.

CAUTION
Risk of burns in the proximity of fire. The back uphol-
stery and seat cushion of the sports wheelchair are ame
retardant but nevertheless ammable. Therefore utmost
caution near any sources of open ame or sparks, espe-
cially lit cigarettes, is required.
CAUTION
Risk of hypothermia or burns on wheelchair parts. Parts
can become extremely hot or cold due to extreme tempera-
tures.
Do not expose the product to any extreme temperatures
(e.g. direct sunlight, sauna, extreme cold) in order to pre-
vent injuries by coming into contact with the parts.
INFORMATION
Only use original manufacturer’s options. The optional
components may be mounted only as described here.
Failure to comply will void the warranty.
2.4 Safety requirements for transportation,
storage and assembly
Transportation and storage
WARNING
Risk of accidents and injury due to improper use for
transportation in motor vehicles for the disabled. The
sports wheelchair has not bee approved by Ottobock for
use as a seat in motor vehicles for the transportation of
disabled persons.
NOTICE
Risk of damage due to improper transportation. Only
use hoisting devices that have a sufcient capacity and
the designated carry handles. The sports wheelchair must
be secured in accordance with the regulations for the
transportation device used. During transport on lifting
platforms or in lifts, the wheelchair controls must be
switched off. Engage the brake. Ensure that the sports
wheelchair is centred on the lifting platform. None of the
sports wheelchair‘s components, such as its anti-tippers
or other components, may be in the danger area.

NOTICE
Battery damage due to deep discharge. Remove the
fuse for shipping or when the sports wheelchair is not be-
ing used for an extended period of time.
INFORMATION
The tyres of the sports wheelchair contain chemical sub-
stances that can react with other chemical substances
(such as cleaning agents, acids). Black tyres contain soot
particles that can cause discolouration and black marks.
Therefore a suitable surface is required when parking the
wheelchair for extended periods of time.
Assemly
WARNING
Risk of accidents and injury when loosening plug or
screw connections. For all setting works or when prepar-
ing the wheelchair for transportation, screw and/or plug
connections have to be loosened. This can cause uncon-
trolled movements of wheelchair components. To avoid in-
juries at pinch and shear points, carry out such works with
the support of another person. Make sure to always keep
parts of the body (e. g. hands or head) out of the danger
zone.
CAUTION
Risk of accidents due to unsecured screw connections.
When screw connections with thread locks are loosened,
they must be replaced by new ones or secured with a me-
dium-strength thread lock substance (e. g. EuroLock
A24.20).
After any settings on the sports wheelchair are estab-
lished or changed, the mounting screws and / or nuts
must be retightened securely. During tightening observe
torques when specied.

INFORMATION
Prior to using the sports wheelchair, all the necessary me-
chanical adaptations (e. g. mounting special controls) and
software settings (e. g. programming the control) must be
made to comply with the individual requirements and abili-
ties of the user. The settings may only be made by trained
specialists who have been authorised by Ottobock.
INFORMATION
The mounting position of the stand-up device unit and/or
seat must not be modied.
2.5 Safety requirements for operation
WARNING
Risk of accidents and injury due to defective safety
functions. The user is obligated to ensure that the sports
wheelchair and its safety functions are in safe and proper
condition before every use.
The sports wheelchair may only be operated if all safety
functions, e.g. the automatic brakes, are functional. Brake
failure can result in serious accidents with fatal injuries.
WARNING
Risk of accidents and injury due to incorrect configura-
tion settings. Modied parameter settings in the congu-
ration lead to changes in driving characteristics. In partic-
ular, changes to the speed, acceleration, braking or
joystick settings can lead to unexpected and therefore un-
controllable operating performance with a risk of acci-
dents. Always test the driving characteristics of the sports
wheelchair after conguration / programming is complete.
Programming must only be completed by authorised per-
sonnel. Neither Ottobock nor the control unit manufacturer
are liable for damages (especially in combination with
special controls) caused by programming that was not
properly / professionally adapted to the abilities of the
wheelchair user.
WARNING
Risk of accidents and injury due to a lack of brake func-
tionality when the brake is disengaged. Note the lack of
brake functionality when the brake is disengaged, espe-
cially when moving the sports wheelchair on slopes.

WARNING
Risk of injury due to tipping during operation. The Para-
Golfer has been approved for ascending or descending
inclines of up to 17° or 30 %. Navigating inclines above
this value is not permitted.
The critical obstacle height of the ParaGolfer is
100 mm / 3.9". It is not permitted to cross obstacles high-
er than 100 mm / 3.9". When driving on inclines or slopes,
it is not permissible to negotiate obstacles. Operating the
power wheelchair on stairs is not permitted.
WARNING
Risk of accidents due to tipping during operation. Re-
duce the driving speed when driving downhill (e.g. set it to
speed level 1). When driving on inclines or slopes, it is not
permissible to negotiate obstacles. Avoid getting into or
out of the wheelchair on slopes. Before driving up slopes
or over obstacles, the stand-up device must be brought
into its lowest position.
WARNING
Risk of tipping when driving on inappropriate ground.
Driving on very smooth areas (e.g. icy surfaces) or ex-
tremely rough terrain (e.g. broken rock or rubble) is not
permitted.
WARNING
Risk of tipping when using lifting platforms. When using
lifting platforms, lifts, busses or trains, the controls of the
power wheelchair must be switched off and the brake
must be locked.
WARNING
Risk of tipping due to changes in the centre of gravity.
The effects of changes in the centre of gravity on the be-
haviour of the sports wheelchair on inclines, side hills, or
when crossing obstacles must be tested with the secure
support of an attendant prior to initial use.

WARNING
Risk of pinching or crushing in the electric seat adjust-
ment and stand-up device ranges. When operating the
stand-up device, there are pinch and shear points in the
area between the seat frame and wheelchair frame
caused by the construction. All attendants must be in-
formed about this. To avoid injuries, always make sure
that no parts of the body, e. g. hands or feet get into the
danger zone, that no interfering objects, e. g. clothing or
obstacles are within the danger zone, and that no unau-
thorised persons are present in the danger zone.
WARNING
Risk of accidents and injury due to improper use of the
stand-up function.
The stand-up function may be used on level ground
only.
When using the stand-up device, no unauthorised per-
sons may be present in the danger zone. There must
not be any interfering objects or obstacles in the stand-
up area.
All attendants must be informed that there are pinch
points caused by the construction in the area between
the seat frame and wheelchair frame. Users and
attendants must not reach into the danger zone.
The stand-up function may only be used with applied
chest belt, lap belt and knee belt.
CAUTION
Risk of accident when driving without experience. Driv-
ing without experience can lead to falls and other danger-
ous situations. Practice using the wheelchair on level,
straightforward terrain before using it.
CAUTION
Risk of accidents and injury due to getting into or out of
the wheelchair improperly. Switch off the wheelchair
controls before getting into and out of the sports wheel-
chair. Please notice that the armrests are not capable of
bearing full body weight and that they therefore must not
be used for getting into or out of the wheelchair.

CAUTION
Risk of accidents and injury due to rolling. A released
brake may result in uncontrolled rolling of the sports
wheelchair. Therefore, ensure that the brake is engaged
after parking the sports wheelchair.
CAUTION
Risk of accidents due to bad tyres. Visually inspect the
tyres for sufcient tread depth and correct tyre pressure
before each use.
Whenever possible, avoid parking the wheelchair out-
doors and in direct sunlight (UV light), as it causes the
tyres to age prematurely. As a result, the tread surface
hardens and corner pieces break out of the tread.
Ottobock recommends to replace the tyres every 2 years
regardless of wear and tear.
When the wheelchair is not used for extended periods of
time or if the tyres are heated strongly (e. g. near radiators
or by sunlight shining through a window), permanent de-
formation of the tyres will result. Therefore always make
sure that the wheelchair has sufcient distance from
sources of heat, move your wheelchair from time to time or
jack up the wheelchair when storing it.
NOTICE
Risk of damage due to improper use of the stand-up
function. The power wheelchair is equipped with a stand-
up device. The following particularities must be observed
during operation:
The seat function actuators are not intended for
continuous use, but only for short-term limited opera-
tion (10 % use, 90 % idle time). General recommenda-
tion: At maximum load, 10 seconds of operation should
be followed by 90 seconds of idle time. In this regard,
the electric seat functions are considered independ-
ently of the driving function.
The seat with stand-up device may be subjected to a
maximum load of 140 kg / 308 Ibs.
The stand-up device may not be operated in case of
errors or malfunctions.
If creep speed is not activated when the stand-up de-
vice is operated, please visit a specialist dealer imme-
diately. The power wheelchair may only be used with
the stand-up device in its lowest position until the fault
is repaired.

NOTICE
Risk of damage due to excessive heat or cold. The
ParaGolfer may only be operated in the temperature
range from -15 °C to +40 °C / 5°F to 104 °F. It must not
be operated at temperatures outside this range.
NOTICE
Risk of damage caused by overload/excessive strain.
The maximum load for the ParaGolfer is 140 kg / 308 Ibs.
NOTICE
Damage to tyres due to excessive tyre pressure. Make
sure that the tyre pressure indicated in section "Technical
data" is not exceeded.
INFORMATION
It is strongly recommended that the user for his/her own
safety always fastens the lap belt. The lap belt serves to
stabilise the person sitting or standing in the sports wheel-
chair.
INFORMATION
Every time you switch on the control unit, it will return to
the previously selected speed level. If desired, the starting
speed level can be changed in the parameter settings.
These settings may only be made by trained specialists
who have been authorised by Ottobock.
INFORMATION
If the driving mode is changed while driving, the sports
wheelchair will accelerate or decelerate.
INFORMATION
The controls of the sports wheelchair are protected ac-
cording to protective system IP 54 and can thus be used
in bad weather (e. g. rain). The controls are approved for
indoor and outdoor operation and meet the requirements
regarding climate and splashed water.

INFORMATION
After each emergency stop, the controls of the sports
wheelchair must be turned on again. In the event of com-
munication problems in the bus system of the controls, the
system triggers an emergency stop and thus prevents any
uncontrolled functions. If the driving function is still not
available after switching the controls on again, unlock the
brakes to activate the push mode. In this case, contact a
specialist dealer as soon as possible.
INFORMATION
If the controls do not emit an error signal as soon as the
brake lever is activated, this indicates a malfunction. The
settings must be checked by a specialist dealer.
INFORMATION
Manoeuvring is only allowed at reduced speeds.
2.6 Safety requirements for care, maintenance
and disposal
WARNING
Serious injuries due to exceeding the service life.
Using the product beyond the specied expected ser-
vice life (see the section “Service life”) leads to in-
creased residual risk and should only take place sub-
ject to the due diligence and deliberations of qualied
personnel.
If the service life is reached, the user or a responsible
attendant should contact the qualied personnel who
tted the product or the manufacturer’s servicing de-
partment (see inside rear cover or back page for ad-
dress). Here the user can obtain information about
known risks and the current options for refurbishing
the product.
CAUTION
Risk of accidents and injury due to improper mainte-
nance, repairs or adjustments. Only trained staff who
have been authorised by Ottobock may do maintenance
work on the sports wheelchair. This also applies to all re-
pairs and settings on the brakes. Incorrect settings can
lead to a loss of braking power.

CAUTION
Risk of injury due to explosive gases. Explosive gases
can develop while the batteries are charging. Therefore
the following safety precautions are required when charg-
ing the batteries:
Switch the control off.
Ensure sufcient ventilation when charging the
batteries in closed rooms.
Smoking and open ames are not permitted. Sparks
must be avoided.
The air vents in the trim must not be covered.
CAUTION
Risk of injury due to uncontrolled movements. The fuse
must always be removed for any maintenance work where
the battery cover is open.
NOTICE
Unauthorised battery replacement. The battery may
only be replaced by a specialist dealer. The characteristic
curve of the battery charger set at the factory corresponds
to the battery provided and must not be changed. Setting
the characteristic curve incorrectly can result in perma-
nent damage to the battery.
NOTICE
Risk of damage to electronics due to short circuit. Al-
ways use insulated tools when doing any maintenance
work on the batteries. Ensure correct polarity is used
when connecting the battery cables.
NOTICE
Risk of damage to electronics due to water penetra-
tion. Never use a water jet or high-pressure cleaning ap-
paratus for cleaning the sports wheelchair. Water must
not come into direct contact with the electronics, motor or
batteries.
NOTICE
Risk of damage due to uncontrolled movements. When
jacking up, secure the wheelchair to prevent it from slip-
ping or tilting to the side by placing a suitable base under
the drive unit support.
INFORMATION
The functionality and operating safety of the sports wheel-
chair must be veried by an authorised specialist at least
once per year.

INFORMATION
Defective batteries must be disposed of properly in ac-
cordance with country-specic regulations.
2.7 Requirements for the user
CAUTION
Risk of accidents and injury due to improper operation.
The sports wheelchair may only be operated by a properly
trained user. For this purpose, the user and any attend-
ants must receive instruction in the use of the sports
wheelchair from specialists trained and authorised by
Ottobock.
The user must have read and understood all the informa-
tion in the instructions for use.
The operating company/institution is obligated to ensure
that the user can operate the ParaGolfer safely and fault-
lessly.
The wheelchair may not be operated in cases of exhaus-
tion or under the inuence of alcohol or medications.
The user must not have any mental limitations which can
temporarily or permanently restrict attentiveness and
judgement.
2.8 Effects of electromagnetic interference on
the product and on the user

2.8.1 General information on electromagnetic interfer-
ence
Sports wheelchairs may be susceptible to electromag-
netic interference (EMI), which is interfering electromag-
netic energy (EM) emitted from sources such as radio
stations, TV stations, amateur radio (HAM) transmitters,
two-way radios, and cellular phones.
The interference (from radio wave sources) can cause
the sports wheelchair to release its brakes, move by it-
self, or move in unintended directions.

It can also permanently damage the sports wheelchairs
control system.
The intensity of the interfering EM energy can be meas-
ured in volts per meter (V/m). Each sports wheelchair
can resist EMI up to a certain intensity. This is called its
“immunity level”. The higher the immunity level, the great-
er the protection. At this time, current technology is ca-
pable of achieving at least a 20 V/m immunity level,
which would provide useful protection from the more
common sources of radiated EMI.
There are a number of sources of relatively intense elec-
tromagnetic elds in the everyday environment. Some of
these sources are obvious and easy to avoid. Others are
not apparent and exposure is unavoidable. However, we
believe that by following the warnings listed below, your
risk to EMI will be minimized.
The sources of radiated EMI can be broadly classied
into three types:
1. Hand-held portable transceivers (transmitters-receiv-
ers) with the antenna mounted directly on the trans-
mitting unit. Examples include: citizens band (CB) ra-
dios, "walkie talkie," security, re, and police
transceivers, cellular telephones, and other personal
communication devices.
NOTICE
Some cellular telephones and similar devic-
es transmit signals while they are ON, even when
not being used.
2. Medium-range mobile transceivers, such as those
used in police cars, re trucks, ambulances, and tax-
is. These usually have the antenna mounted on the
outside of the vehicle;
3. Long-range transmitters and transceivers, such as

broadcast antenna towers) and amateur (HAM) ra-
dios.
Because EM energy rapidly becomes more intense as
one move closer to the transmitting antenna (source), the
EM elds from hand-held radio wave sources (transceiv-
ers) are of special concern. It is possible to unintention-
ally bring high levels of EM energy very close to the
sports wheelchair's control system while using these de-
vices. This can affect sports wheelchair movement and
braking.
Other types of hand-held devices, such as cordless
phones, laptop computers, AM/FM radios, TV sets, CD
players, and cassette players, and small appliances,
such as electric shavers and hair dryers, so far as we
know, are not likely to cause EMI problems to your sports
wheelchair.

2.8.2 Warnings regarding effects of electromagnetic
interference
INFORMATION
The warnings listed below are recommended to prevent
possible interference with the control system of the sports
wheelchair.
WARNING
Risk of accidents due to uncontrolled driving behav-
iour. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from sources
such as radio and TV stations, amateur radio (HAM)
transmitters, two-way radios, and cellular phones can af-
fect sports wheelchairs and motorized scooters. Following
the warnings listed below should reduce the chance of un-
intended brake release or sports wheelchair movement
which could result in serious injury.
Do not turn ON hand-held personal communication de-
vices, such as citizens band (CB) radios and cellular
phones, while the sports wheelchair is turned ON.
Be aware of nearby transmitters, such as radio or TV
stations, and try to avoid coming close to them.
If unintended movement or brake release occurs, turn
the sports wheelchair OFF as soon as it is safe. In this
case, please contact your authorised specialist dealer
immediately.
Be aware that adding accessories or components, or
modifying the sports wheelchair, may make it more
susceptible to interference from radio wave sources
(Note: There is no easy way to evaluate their effect on
the overall immunity of the sports wheelchair).
Report all incidents of unintended movement or brake
release to the authorised specialist dealer or the sports
wheelchair manufacturer, and note whether there is a
radio wave source nearby.
NOTICE
Interference from electromagnetic fields. The power
wheelchair has been tested according to EMC regula-
tions. The following particularities must be observed dur-
ing operation:
The power wheelchair may generate electromagnetic
elds that can cause interference with other devices.
Therefore the controls should be switched off when no
function is required.
