1 Introduction
1.1 Foreword
Regular maintenance is important – it improves safety and increases the lifespan of the product.
All Mobility products should be inspected and serviced once a year.
However, we recommend inspecting, readjusting, and if necessary servicing the product every 6 months if the
product is used frequently, by growing children or by users with changing clinical conditions.
Only use original spare parts for all service and maintenance work. The service and maintenance tasks described
here should only be completed by trained, qualified personnel and not by the user of the device.
This service and maintenance manual refers to the respective spare parts catalogues and the instructions for use of
the described products. Please use these documents together.
Use the maintenance schedule (checklist) as a template for making copies. Retain completed maintenance sched
ules and provide the customer with a copy.

Max. load capacity: 100 kg (effective seat width: 280 - 440 mm); 140 kg (effective seat width: 460 - 500 mm)
The lightweight Ventus wheelchair is a modular rigid-frame wheelchair for active use in open frame design. The
one-piece light metal frame, combined with a single-panel footrest or a footplate, offers high stability with a low net
weight.
The frame design allows the seat height and angle, centre of gravity and lower leg length to be adjusted. Two
frame angles as well as straight and inwardly offset versions are available.

3 Service Work
3.1 General Information
INFORMATION
Read the service manual before starting work. Familiarise yourself with the functions of the product prior to
inspection and use. In order to do so, you can request this service manual and other documentation from the
manufacturer (see the overview of national Ottobock branches on the inside of the back cover) or download from
our homepage www.ottobock.de or www.ottobock.com.
INFORMATION
Clean and disinfect the product before commencing service work.
Observe all care instructions and product-specific inspection instructions in the instructions for use.
INFORMATION
Many screw connections utilise screws and nuts equipped with thread lock. If you loosen screw connections, be
sure to replace the respective nut or screw with one equipped with a new thread lock. If new screws or nuts with
thread lock are not available, apply a medium-strength liquid thread locking compound (such as Loctite® 241 or
Euro Lock A24.20) to the existing screws.

3.3 Required Tools and Accessories
The following tools are required in order to perform the service work:
• Reversible ratchet handle wrench and sockets (size: 8–24)
• Torque wrench (measurement range 5-50 Nm)
• Wrench (size: 8–24)1)
• Allen wrench (size: 2.5–6)2)
• Screwdriver (blade width: 2.5/3.5/5 mm)
• Phillips head screwdriver (size: 2)
• Hammer (approx. 300 g); soft-faced hammer
• Pliers: cutting pliers, combination pliers, snap ring pliers
• Rivet gun (for rivets up to ø 5mm)
• Pin punch, ø 3/4/5/6 mm

3.4 Assembly A: Frame
3.4.1 Replacing the Frame
To replace the frame, all mounted parts and assemblies have to be removed from the frame in sequence.
1) Remove the rear wheels (not illustrated).
2) Remove the calf band (not illustrated).
3) Remove the seat back from the frame (see Page23).
4) Remove the tube footrest or footplate (see Page13).
5) Remove the sliders with axle assembly (see Page38).
6) Remove the side panel mountings (see Page31).
7) Remove the wheel locks (see Page53).
8) Remove the caster wheel assembly (see Page35).
9) Replace the frame.
10) Reinstall all parts and assemblies on the frame in their original positions.
INFORMATION: Always observe the respective torque specifications in the sections for the individual
assemblies (page numbers are in brackets behind the instructions above).
11) Check the following settings and adjust if necessary:
→Slider with axle assembly: track adjustment (see Page48)
→Wheel lock: adjustment of the wheel lock (Adjusting the knee lever wheel lock)
→Footrests: lower leg length setting (see Page15)
→Caster wheel assembly: caster wheel journal angle adjustment (see Page36)
3.4.2 Replacing/Retrofitting the Accessory Mount
INFORMATION
►In the following, the replacing/retrofitting of the accessory mount is described by way of an example, based on
a slider.
►For special features regarding the assembly/disassembly of the accessory mount on a Shock Absorber Sys
tem, see section "Retrofitting of Accessory Mount in Combination with a Retrofit Kit".

INFORMATION
►The accessory mount is available in 2 versions:
→for max. load capacity up to 100 kg (for seat width 280 - 440 mm)
→for max. load capacity up to 140 kg (for seat width 460 - 500 mm)
►For some settings, or when using a Shock Absorber System, the accessory mount must be combined with a
retrofit kit for assembly. See the section "Retrofitting of Accessory Mount in Combination with a Retrofit Kit".
The accessory mount (see Fig.16) is required for the installation of the anti-tipper and tip-assist.
A clamping flange must be removed in order to install the accessory mount.
1) Note the installation position of the axle assembly on the sliders.
2) On both sides, loosen 1 Allen head screw respectively between the accessory mount and clamping flange (see
Fig.3, item 1).
3) On both sides, loosen 2 Allen head screws respectively between the accessory mount and the slider and
clamping flange (see Fig.3, item 2).
4) Remove the axle assembly (see Fig.4, item 1) from the sliders.
5) Loosen the Allen head screw on a clamping flange (see Fig.4, item 2).
6) Pull the clamping flange off the axle (see Fig.4, item3). Remove the old accessory mount and replace it (see
Fig.4, item4).
7) Slide the accessory mount onto the rear wheel axle with proper alignment (see Fig.4, item4).
If applicable: Slide on a second accessory mount.
8) Preinstall the accessory mount on the clamping flange with 1 Allen head screw (see Fig.5).
9) Slide the clamping flange back onto the axle and preinstall with the Allen head screw (see Fig.4, item2).
10) Install the axle assembly on the sliders:
→Preinstall the fixed clamping flange on the slider with 2 Allen head screws (see Fig.3, item 2).
→Preinstall the loose clamping flange on the slider with 2 Allen head screws.
11) Check and adjust the parallel setting of the slider. The interior measurement between the sliders must be equal
at any height (see Fig.6, item 1/2).
12) If applicable: Adjust the track (Adjusting the track).
13) Position the accessory mount at the desired angle.
Tighten all Allen head screws between the accessory mount, clamping flange and slider to 10Nm (see Fig.3,
item1/2).
14) Tighten the Allen head screws on the clamping flanges to 10 Nm (see Fig.7, item1).

3.4.3 Retrofitting of Accessory Mount in Combination with a Retrofit Kit
For some settings, or when using a Shock Absorber System, the accessory mount must be combined with a retrofit
kit for assembly.
The retrofit kit includes screws for installing onto the accessory mount.
• For installation onto the 100 kg version: short screws.
• For installation onto 140 kg version: long screws.
The following retrofit kits are available:

Installing the 481A25=SV035 Retrofit Kit
The retrofit kit (see Fig.8) prevents the anti-tipper tube from knocking against the "long" slider. Its use is only
necessary when assembling an accessory mount in connection with the following seat heights.

1) Installing the accessory mount (see section "Replacing/Retrofitting the Accessory Mount").
2) During assembly, install the spacer (see Fig.9, item 1) between the accessory mount (see Fig.9, item 2) and
clamping flange (see Fig.9, item 3). Tighten the Allen head screws to 10Nm.

Installing the 481A25=SV092 or 481A25=SV093 Retrofit Kit
The retrofit kit (see Fig.10) is required for each assembly of an accessory mount on a Shock Absorber System.
1) Installing the Shock Absorber System (see section "Retrofitting the Shock Absorber System").
2) Installing the accessory mount (see section "Replacing/Retrofitting the Accessory Mount").
3) During assembly, a spacer (see Fig.11, item 1) must be installed between the accessory mount (see Fig.11,
item 2) and clamping flange (see Fig.11.JPG, item 3). Tighten the Allen head screws to 10Nm.

3.4.4 Retrofitting/Adjusting the Anti-Tipper and Tip-Assist
CAUTION
Incorrect installation of the anti-tipper/missing anti-tipper
Risk of the user tipping to the rear
►Depending upon the settings of the chassis, the centre of gravity of the wheelchair and the back angle and on
the experience of the user, the use of an anti-tipper may be necessary.
►For a small wheelbase and a backrest that is tilted far back, an anti-tipper may need to be installed on both
sides, depending upon the user's experience.
►Verify that the anti-tipper is installed and adjusted properly. Find the appropriate position with the assistance
of a helper!

3.4.4.1 Installing the Anti-Tipper
The anti-tipper (see Fig.12) is supplied as an assembly together with the accessory mount. The anti-tipper is prein
stalled on the accessory mount.
To install the anti-tipper, see the section "Replacing/Retrofitting the Accessory Mount" (see Page8).

3.4.4.2 Adjusting the Anti-Tipper
INFORMATION
In order to adjust the anti-tipper correctly, it may be necessary to combine the steps to adjust the length and
angle.
Adjusting the length of the pivot arm
1) Remove the Allen head screw on the pivot arm (see Fig.13, item1).
2) Adjust the length of the pivot arm.
3) Bolt down the pivot arm. The outer edge of the anti-tipper roller has to project beyond the largest diameter of
the tyre (see Fig.12).
Adjusting the angle of the pivot arm option 1
1) Remove the Allen head screw between the anti-tipper tube and the angle adjuster (see Fig.14, item1).
2) Loosen the second Allen head screw on the angle adjuster (see Fig.14, item2).
3) Set the angle of the pivot arm.
4) Bolt down the pivot arm. The max. distance between the anti-tipper rollers and floor is 5 cm (see Fig.12).
Adjusting the angle of the accessory mount option 2
1) Remove the 3 Allen head screws between the accessory mount and the clamping flange (see Fig.15, item1).
2) Set the angle of the accessory mount (3 settings at intervals of 10°: see Fig.2).
3) Tighten the accessory mount to 10Nm. The max. distance between the anti-tipper rollers and floor is 5 cm (see
Fig.12).

3.4.4.3 Installing / adjusting the tip-assist
The tip-assist can be installed on the accessory mount in the installation position provided (see Fig.17, item1).
1) Press the spring on the tip-assist (see Fig.17, item2).
2) Insert the tip-assist into the accessory mount (see Fig.17, item1).
3) Allow the spring to lock in.

3.4.5 Retrofitting the Frame Pad
1) Position the frame pad on the front frame (not illustrated).
2) Fasten the hook-and-loop closure on the frame pad (not illustrated).
3.5 Assembly B: Footrest
3.5.1 Replacing/Retrofitting the Footrest
INFORMATION
►When installing the footrest, the lower leg length and footrest angle also need to be adjusted (Adjusting the
Footrests/Tube Footrest/Footplates).
►Document the insertion depth before replacing the footrest/footplate.
1) Loosen the Allen head screws (see Fig.18).
2) Pull out the footrest and replace it (see Fig.19).
3) If applicable: Replace clamp sleeves:
→Pull out the clamp sleeve (see Fig.20).
→Position the new clamp sleeve. The flat side has to face in the direction of the clamping screws (see
Fig.20, item 1).
4) Evenly slide the footrest into the frame up to the recorded insertion depth. Use a soft-faced hammer if neces
sary.
5) Tighten the Allen head screws to 7Nm.

3.5.2 Replacing the Footplate
1) Loosen the Allen head screws on the clamp fitting (see Fig.27, item1, see Fig.22).
2) Remove and replace the footplate.
3) If applicable: Remove and replace the clamp fitting. In order to do so, bend open the clamp fitting as far as
possible and pull it off the tube. Slide the new clamp fitting onto the tube.
4) Preinstall the footplate with the Allen head screws.
5) Rotate the footplate to the desired angle (see Fig.27, item2).
6) Tighten the Allen head screws to 10Nm.

3.5.3 Installing / adjusting the heel block
The heel block can be installed using the pre-drilled holes on the footplate.
1) Install the heel block using the socket head screws on the underside of the footplate (see Fig.23, item1).
2) Before tightening, slide the heel block in the slot to the desired foot width (see Fig.24).
3) Tighten the socket head screws.

3.5.4 Adjusting the Footrests/Tube Footrest/Footplates
3.5.4.1 Adjusting the lower leg length
The required footrest height depends on the lower leg length of the user and the thickness of the seat cushion.
"Angle-adjustable" footrest and "Fixed" footplate
1) Slightly loosen the four clamping screws on the inner side of the castor attachment device (see Fig.25, item1).
2) Adjust the lower leg length (continuously adjustable). The foot stirrups must be slid at least 60mm into the
frame tube.
3) Tighten the clamping screws to 7Nm.
Footrest for short lower leg lengths adjusting the height
1) Loosen the lower mounting screws on both sides (see Fig.26, item1).
2) Remove the footplate unit (see Fig.26, item2).
3) Loosen the upper mounting screws on both sides (see Fig.26, item3).
4) Move the footplate in the perforated plate to the desired height position (see Fig.26, item4).
5) Tighten the upper mounting screws (with washers) to 7Nm (see Fig.26, item3).
6) Insert the footplate unit.
7) Tighten the lower mounting screws to 5Nm (see Fig.26, item1).
Footrest for short lower leg lengths adjusting the horizontal position
1) Loosen the lower mounting screws on both sides (see Fig.26, item1).
2) Select the right holes on the adjustment circle for the desired positioning (see Fig.26, item5).
3) Tighten the lower mounting screws to 5Nm (see Fig.26, item1).
NOTE: After every adjustment to the horizontal position, the angle of the plate must be adapted.

3.5.4.2 Adjusting the plate angle
The footrest setting should be chosen so that the ankle is in a relaxed, comfortable position.

1) Loosen the socket head screws on the clamp bracket (see Fig.21, item1).
2) Rotate the footplate to the desired angle (see Fig.21, item2).
3) Tighten the socket head screws to 10Nm.

3.6.1 Replacing the Seat Upholstery
3.6.1.1 Replacing the "Standard" Seat Upholstery
1) Remove the Allen head screws between the seat upholstery and frame (see Fig.29).
2) Remove the seat upholstery.
3) Remove the spacers at the front and rear of the frame (see Fig.30, item1).
4) If applicable: Remove the upholstery bars (see Fig.30, item2).
5) Apply the spacers at the front and rear (see Fig.30, item1).
6) Install the new seat upholstery.
7) Tighten the Allen head screws to 5Nm.

3.6.2 Adjusting the Seat Upholstery
INFORMATION
You can slightly correct the centre of gravity by making small changes to the sag of the seat upholstery. Larger
corrections, however, need to be made through adjustment of the frame, slider and castor wheels.
"Standard" Seat Upholstery
This seat upholstery cannot be adjusted. If the upholstery sags significantly after longer periods of use, it must be
replaced.
"Adaptable" Seat Upholstery
This seat upholstery can be adjusted in segments to the needs of the user.
1) Remove the seat cushion.
2) Pull the seat pad off the hook-and-loop fastener (see Fig.33).
3) Pull the flap of the backrest pad off the hook-and-loop fastener (see Fig.76, item2) and let it hang down.
4) Loosen the backrest straps and then fasten together with the desired tension (see Fig.34).
5) Secure the backrest pad to the seat upholstery with the hook-and-loop fastener. To do this, pull the part of the
flap that can be fastened forwards and fasten to the seat upholstery (see Fig.76, item2).
INFORMATION: The part of the flap that can be fastened prevents sliding or falling through the gaps
between the straps and protects against draughts.
6) Fasten the seat pad (see Fig.76, item1) and the seat cushion.

3.6.3 Cleaning the Seat Upholstery
1) Remove the seat upholstery (see Fig.35).
2) Clean the seat upholstery with regular mild household detergent.
3) Reinstall the seat upholstery.

►Clean the seat cushion according to the attached care label.
Seat Cushion with Foam Core
1) Open the zipper and remove the foam core (see Fig.36).
2) Clean the cover and foam core according to the attached care label.
3) Reinsert the foam core with proper alignment. Close the zipper.

3.6.5 Retrofitting a Seat Plate
Instead of seat upholstery (see Fig.37, Pos.1), a seat plate (see Fig.37, Pos.2) can be installed on the wheel
chair for the adaptation of seating shells.
1) Remove the seat upholstery (see Page16; see Page16). Do not remove the existing supports from the frame
tube.
2) Put on the seat plate and screw it to the frame using the existing bore holes (see Fig.38).
3) Tighten the Allen head screws to 5Nm.

The replacement of the push handles (old for new) is described below.
Some particularities have to be observed when replacing push handles with another version/variant. These are

3.7.1.3 Replacing the "Folding" Push Handles
INFORMATION
►The "folding" push handles can only be combined with "adaptable" back upholstery (version for "folding"
push handle installation).
►When retrofitting other push handles, the back upholstery may also have to be replaced (see Page26 ff.).
►Retrofitting on the existing seat back increases the back height by approx. 5cm. To avoid exceeding the
former back height, the seat back also has to be replaced (Replacing the Back). Alternatively the back tubes
can be shortened.
1) Remove the Allen head screws between the push handle and back tube (see Fig.43).
2) Pull the push handle up and out of the back tube; replace the push handle (see Fig.44).
3) Slide the push handle into the back tube and align it.
4) Screw the push handle to the back tube (see Fig.43).
→Both push handles must be adjusted to the same height.
5) Thread the top strap of the adaptable back upholstery through both push handles and fasten the hook-and-loop
closure (see Fig.45).
