1 Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a Tensile and Compressive Force Meter PCE-MMT E from PCE Instruments.
This manual is published by PCE Instruments without any warranty. Our equipment complies with all the
relevant safety regulations and carries the CE symbol. The CE Declaration of Conformity can be found as
an attachment. We point explicitly to our general warranty conditions, which can also be found on this
disk (CD) are and ask for attention. The warranty period of 24 months as described herein does not apply
to batteries. For this a statutory warranty period is 6 months from the date of delivery.
The warrant expires in case of damage:
•an intervention by the buyer, the user or unauthorized third party in the device or its software;
•improper handling; especially if the mechanical overloading of the built-in sensor is caused;
•improper operation, storage, force majeure or other external influences occurs.
Improvements and changes to this manual necessitated by typographical errors and inaccuracies can be
made by the PCE Germany GmbH at any time without notice.
The PCE Germany GmbH reserves the right to make technical modifications and changes to the device,
its accessories and software at any time and without notice. Any changes will be reflected in the then
published user manuals.
2 Safety notes
Please read this manual carefully and completely before you use the device for the first time. The device
may only be used by qualified personnel and repaired by PCE Instruments personnel. There is no
warranty of damages or injuries caused by non-observance of the manual.
- The device may only be used in approved temperature range
- The opening of the instrument should only be done by qualified personnel of the PCE Instruments
- The instrument should never be placed face down on the user interface (e.g., keyboard side on a table)
- You should not make technical changes to the device
- The appliance should only be cleaned with a damp cloth / use only pH-neutral cleaner
This user's handbook is published from PCE Instruments without any guarantee.
We expressly point to our general guarantee terms, they can be found in our general terms of business.
With the present measuring instrument, tensile and compressive forces can be determined up to the

Power button
To turn the device on, please, press the
button for 2-3 seconds. Then the device
starts and displays the connected TEDs
measuring cells (Notes on TEDs in chapter
4.5). After confirming the measuring cell

4.2 Operating system
The hand dynamometer has its own processor and operates with a real time operating system of the
latest generation. This system processes the raw data of the measurements and indicates them
accordingly. In case of a switched memory functions MS Excel-compatible CSV files can be stored in the
integrated data logger. On delivery, the device has a SD memory card with 2GB capacity.
5 Main menu
Press to enter the menu selection. You can now find the menu items "User", "Settings" and "Factory
Setup".
With you can switch between the displayed menu items and select the desired menu item with
the help of
the menu item "user" includes the mode you need for measurement. In the menu item "Settings" you can
carry out the expanded settings. The menu item "Factory Setup" makes it possible to restore the factory
default settings or to enter the calibration mode. This area, however, is password protected and can be
reached only through our service.

Turn off the storage ("no saving")
When this button is pressed, no measurement values are stored.
Storing the upper and lower peak values ("peak value up / down")
If you press here, the memory function of the peak values is activated.
First, the upper peak value is displayed. Indicator appears at the bottom of the display. With the
help of the display of the stored value is switched. Then the lower peak value follows, and
appears on display. The current measurement value is displayed in this operating mode additionally in the
lower section of the display (in a smaller representation).
With the display is switched again. Then only the current measurement value is displayed again.
Note: The stored peak values are retained until the Clear key (CLR, button 2) is pressed. Undeleted peak
values are retained and displayed again when the peak measurement is enabled. They will be only
overwritten with higher values.
Curve storage (“Curve")
Clicking activates the function “curve storage”.
5.2.1.1 Define the number of peak values (“select the quantity”)
This function makes it possible to determine the number of peak values that will be stored in the same
file. Pressing (key 6) opens a window in which the number of to be stored peak values can be set.
The factory default setting is 10.
5.2.1.2 Curve recording duration (”time curve”)
If you press the function "time curve" is activated. This function allows setting the recording time (1 to
600 s) of a curve. After pressing the window "seconds” opens, in which the time must be entered.
Note:The maximum duration of the recording is limited by the size of the measuring frequency.
5.2.1.3 “Delete”
In the menu levels “delete peak value”, “delete curve” and “delete all” the saved files can be deleted.
Pressing (key 6) on the desired function opens the selection window. The options are “OK” and “Exit”.

5.2.1.4 Display of the stored files (“Browse”)
By pressing a new window is opened. In this window, the curves and peak value files stored on the
meter are displayed in a tabular form. That name is presented which the file shows. To navigate is
possible with the help of
By pressing on one of the selected files you get a possibility to see the file information, such as time
of saving and size, displayed. Besides, it is possible to delete the selected files individually.
To exit this window, press .
5.2.2 “Limit values”
In this item, positive and negative limit values can be set. When these values are reached, there is a
potential pending signal at the output jack. With this, for example, a relay can be switched. If you operate
the device with the test stands PCE-TF 3, PCE-TF 4, offered by us, the machines can be stopped in such
a way. The limit values may show positive, negative or both a positive and negative numerical value. With
activated distance measurement (optional) an upper and a lower distance limit value can be set in
addition.
Note: The data transfer and storage is automatically stopped when a limit value is exceeded.
Two symbols (“<", ">") on the display above the power indicator show the current limit value status. The
"<" symbol indicates that the measurement value is below the limit value. If the current measurement
value reaches and exceeds the set limit, the ">" symbol is displayed.
5.2.2.1 “Upper limit” and “lower limit”
After pressing you can choose between the input of the limit value as a numerical value, the
operating mode of the output limit value and the selection of the sign mode. Navigation is carried out with
the help of
"Set point"
Pressing makes the input of the value for the limit value active. The cursor is moved to the desired
digit with the help of . With the desired value of the digit can be decreased or increased.
The key confirms the input of the value.
"Mode Output"
Pressing activates the selection operating mode of the limit output. With you may choose
between closing and opening function of the limit value output. Confirm with .
"Sign"
Clicking activates the selection of type of the limit value. With you select between signed and
absolute value. Confirm with .

5.2.2.2 Time limit for data transfer
In the menu item "DSI time limit activation" you can activate a time limit for stopping the data
transmission.
The menu item "DSI time limit (sec)" allows you to enter certain time that represents how long the data
will transferred via USB interface. The input is made in seconds (0 ... 9999 s). If the time is set to 0, this
function is disabled.
Note:The limit value outputs of the device are switched when the overruns of the time limit happen. A
connected test stand is thereby stopped. To reset the outputs, press either or start a new data
transfer.
If the function "Save the curve" is activated, this setting is not effective. Instead, the time limit is
considered from "curve duration".
5.2.3 Display
You can adjust display as follows according to your needs:

5.2.4 TEDs (automatic sensor recognition)
Information: what is TEDs? TEDs (transducer electronic data sheet) is an international standard for
sensors. Each TEDs measuring cell has a memory chip integrated in the sensor or plug, on which the
basic information on the measuring cell is stored. These are, for example, serial number, measurement
range or calibration.
When a TEDs measuring cell is connected to the meter, you can view the information stored on the
memory chip in this menu.
"Reading ID"
By pressing a new window is opened, which contains the basic TEDs information. Navigate here with

5.2.4.1 Connection of a TEDs measuring cell
Once a cell with TEDs memory chip is connected to a switched on measuring instrument, as well as when
the device is switched on, the detected measurement cell information is displayed.
A new window open which displays the main information of the measurement cell (manufacturer, model
and measuring range.
By pressing , you acknowledge that the calibration stored on the TEDs memory chip is loaded into the
meter. Pressing results in stopping the downloading and previously set user settings such as limit
values and units remain retained.
In the next window you can select one of eight memory locations on the meter. Here, the calibration is
loaded to the connected measuring cell. Confirm your choice with .

5.2.5 Calibration No. (Selection of a characteristic)
The manual selection of a characteristic is only necessary if you have no TEDs measuring cells available
and use several sensors without TEDs.
Connect the desired cell with the instrument and select the required curve with the help of .
Confirm the selection by pressing .
Pressing brings you back to the measurement mode. The measuring cell should be ready to use now.
5.2.6 System
5.2.6.1 Date / Time
Here you can set the date and time. It is necessary only in case of battery pack change, as the date and
time are set at the factory.
With you can set the time and date. The input is activated after the initial pressing of any of both
keys.

You can choose different possibilities:

- 2 (auto power off after 2 minutes)
- 5 (auto power off after 5 minutes, factory setting)
- 10 (auto power off after 10 minutes)

5.2.6.4 USB
In this menu the type of data transmission is selected. The choices are:

5.3.3 Digital filter

Technical note to the filter function:
FIR (Finite Impulse Response) are feedback-free, phase linear digital filters with finite impulse response
the filtered values y (n) of which are calculated from a certain, just distant past of the input signal x. With
the FIR filter, the calculation of the y-value refers to the finite past.
The function of an FIR filter can be compared, for example, with the formation of a sliding mean value.
Then, the sum of "n" successive values is formed and divided by "n". After that, the group of “n” values is
shifted continuously each by one clock, and every time the mean value is formed again. The maximum
number of the past values which are considered during the calculation is then defined as an order. The
higher the order is, the better the properties of the filter are, though the computational complexity is also
higher then. For the display device it means, that the higher the order of the selected filter, the more
values are taken into account in the averaging.
5.4 Factory setup
Note: this menu is password protected and can only be used by our service technicians. It is used for
configuration and calibration of the measuring instrument.
6 Save and transfer the measurement data
6.1 Peak values
If the peak values function is activated, the device saves the pre-set number of peaks in EXCEL
compatible file with the extension * .csv. The format is called "Microsoft Office Excel Comma Separated
Values File".
If the number of the peak values, which was defined in the menu item "number / quantity" is reached, the
file closes automatically. The file name for peak values files is Peakxyz.csv where xyz stands for a
consecutive number starting with 001.
The detected peak value appears on the display. In square brackets the remaining capacity of memory of
the current file is displayed.
The peak value is stored by pressing .
Note: in this case the file closes itself when the pre-set number of peaks is not reached yet!
Saving is stopped if you select the menu item "no saving" or if the space on the SD memory card is full.

6.2 Curve
This function allows the storage of the measurement values in a file. The duration of recording is
adjustable and is limited by the size of measuring frequency (see chapter 3.2.2).

Pressing starts the recording of the data in the * .csv file on the memory card or in case of activated
data streaming the transmission of the data to the connected computer.
Recording is ended in case of pressing or if it exceeds a pre-set limit value (see 3.1.2).
When the pre-set time is over, the recording will stop automatically. The file is closed and a new one
opens, or the transmission to the computer is stopped, when data streaming is enabled.
The file name for the stored on the SD memory card curves is Curvexyz.csv, where xyz stands for a serial
number beginning with 001, stands and is an Excel compatible file with the extension * .csv.
6.3 Termination of data saving
Saving is over when you choose the menu item “no saving” (see chapter ) or when the memory on
the SD card is completely full. The measurement data transfer through the data streaming remains active.
6.4 Data transfer in mass storage mode
Data transfer is carried out via the USB interface. The factory setting of the device makes it possible to
use it as a mass storage. It means that after the first connection to the computer a mass storage driver is
installed automatically, similar to the USB stick. Then the saved measurement data can be copied via
Windows-Explorer. Alternatively, the files can be opened directly via Excel and processed further.
In chapter it is described how the transfer mode can be changed.
6.5 Data transfer in a data streaming mode (DSI transmission)
When the Data Streaming mode is enabled (see chapter ), the measurement data can be sent to a
computer continuously.
Pressing activates the transmission of data to the connected computer.
The data transmission is terminated when is pressed or when a pre-set limit value is exceeded (see
chapter ).
To use this function on the PC, it is necessary to install the virtual COM port driver from the delivered CD.
To do this, put the CD into the drive and ignore any possible auto-start actions of Windows. Turn the

meter on, activate the mode Data Streaming and connect the meter to a free USB slot. The Windows
Hardware Wizard will appear. Follow the instructions for the automatic installation. (A detailed driver
installation manual is on the CD)
If the driver is installed, two options open for you:
Transmission of the measurement data to the optionally available data acquisition software:
To use the software, please start the setup.exe file from the optional CD and follow the instructions in the
Wizard. Adetailed user manual is included on the CD.
The software provides the following functions:
Display of the transmitted measurement data as a value and as a measurement diagram
Storing the measured data as an Excel compatible * .csv file
Creation of a PDF test report including diagram, maximum, minimum and average value
Determining the slope / gradient
Integration of a company logo (.jpg or .bmp)
Freely available documentation and notes fields
When using PCE-MMT Eand path encoder, switching between force-time and force-distance curves.
Note: Please, always pay attention, that the device must be turned on first, before it is connected to the
started computer. If the data transfer does not work one time, stop the software! Make sure that all the
cable connections are plugged in correctly. Check that all the test stands or external devices are on and
then turn the device on. Start the software again and the data transfer is prepared again.
6.6 Transmission of measurement data to an existing terminal program:
To transfer data into an application to your preference, please follow the instructions for this software.
The measurement data transmitting is carried out with the following format

If the display of an incremental distance encoder is activated (optional) and the latter is connected, the
data is transmitted using the following format

Note: How the data is transferred depends on the measuring frequency set on the device. With the set
measuring frequency of 100 Hz, the data is transferred directly and continuously from the start of the
measurement. If the measured frequency is above 100 Hz, the measurement data is first cached in the
meter due to a limitation of the USB interface and then transferred at the end of the measurement.
7 Calibration
The calibration of the display devices and sensors is done in a certified laboratory using traceable
calibrated weights (up to 1000 N) or traceable calibrated reference-force gauges (1000 N).
It is recommended to carry out and certify recalibration annually.
8 Battery life and charging
In the compartment on the back side of the meter there are three environment friendly AA battery packs
that are fully charged before delivery. To charge the batteries, the USB power adapter supplied should be
used. Please work several times until the complete discharge of the batteries and charge them again only
after that. In case of lasting use, for example, in small tests, disconnect the charger at least once a week
during working hours and wait until the full discharge of the batteries. Please charge the device only after
that again. The normal working hours with a fully charged battery pack is about 10 hours. The necessary
charging time is approximately 3 - 4 hours. The current state of charge of the batteries is shown at any
time in the upper right corner of the display. If the batteries have reached their maximum service life and
no longer have their full power, so standard AA batteries or in case of emergency 1.5V AA batteries can
be used. Please note that the working time with standard batteries is limited. When connecting the
delivered charger you can see the state of charge by the moving battery icon in the upper right corner of
the display. Please note that the new batteries reach their full capacity only after a few charge / discharge
cycles. It is recommended to connect the handheld instrument to the charger after each use or daily.
Note: It makes sense to discharge the batteries after long use as much as possible and to charge them
fully again.
9 SD memory card
A memory card with a capacity of 2 GB is included in the delivery. On it, the meter stores accumulating
peak values and curve files. Alternatively, for data transmission via the USB cable, this card with the help
of a small pressure can be taken out of the slot located on the right side. With the help of a SD card
reader it can be read on any computer. SD memory cards up to 4GB are supported.
10 In- and outputs
10.1 Mini-USB interface
The USB-data cable is included in the delivery.
10.2 Output
The analog output is proportional to the measurement value. This has a max. value of ± 2 V DC,
according to the nominal range of the hand-held meter.
A possible calibration of the analog output at two measuring points is available optionally.
Note: The zero adjustment on the display device is carried out in the unloaded condition of the load cell.

The installation of a power management device, for example, a wedged clamping device on the power

11 Incremental encoder (optional)
When using PCE-MIT I in one of our test stands, the machine can be read via an optionally available
incremental encoder input on the 12-pin cable and displayed together with the force.
12 Error messages
In case of incorrect operation, which leads to an overload of the built-in load cell, 2 error messages will be
activated:
- In case of an overload of about 15% a header line "Overload" appears instead of the force display.
A mechanical overload protection happens at about 125% of rated load. If the overload is withdrawn in
time, this indication disappears and the handheld instrument can still be used normally.
- Because of excessive force, for example, when the meter is dropped on the force introduction axis, the
mechanical overload protection can be overcome and the sensor is mechanically deformed. Thus, the
zero point of the sensor is permanently shifted. If this offset is permanently more than 20% of the rated
load, the header line "Overloaded" appears at the bottom of the display in addition.
This line can be reset to default only after carried out repair, possibly sensor exchange.
13 Reset function
In the unlikely case that the device can no longer be operated because of some trouble, the system
software can be reset by pressing the reset button (on the upper right side) with the help of a small round
object (such as a paperclip). All the made settings are retained.

For the disposal of batteries, the 2006/66/EC directive of the European Parliament applies. Due to the
contained pollutants, batteries must not be disposed of as household waste. They must be given to
collection points designed for that purpose.
In order to comply with the EU directive 2012/19/EU we take our devices back. We either re-use them or
give them to a recycling company which disposes of the devices in line with law.
