Before installing your cat flap please
read the following step-by-step
instructions carefully.
Tools required
•Pencil
•Ruler
•Jig or Keyhole Saw
•Drill
•Screwdriver
•Tape measure
•Glue
•Sand paper
Measurement and marking
Measure the belly height of your cat. This is usually 100 -150mm (4-6”) (Fig. 1).
Mark this measurement on the outside of your door and draw a straight
horizontal line 168mm (61/2”) (Fig. 2).
Usually this line will be the bottom of the hole you cut in your door – the
frame of the cat flap will be slightly lower. With Magnetic cat flaps it is
important that the cat is able to approach the cat flap without obstacle. There
should be a level area in front of the cat flap outside which is sufficient for
the cat to stand with all four paws on the same level.

Cutting a hole for your cat flap
a) In Wood
The cat flap requires a square cut-out of 175mm x 168mm (63/4” x 61/2”). (Fig. 3).

b) In PVC/uPVC/Metal
***‘Magnetic’ cat flaps will NOT WORK if installed directly into a
surface containing metal. The unit must be isolated from these
materials in a wooden frame (not provided).
Using the horizontal line as a base, draw a square with minimum
dimensions of 306mm x 306mm (121/4” x 121/4”). (This will be the external
dimensions of your wooden frame).
Cut out the square with a jig or keyhole saw. Fit a wooden frame to the
hole with internal dimensions of 175mm x 168mm (63/4” x 61/2”). The
enclosed cutting template can be used to ensure an accurate cut out.
It is within the wooden frame that your cat flap should be fitted to ensure
that is fully isolated from any metal. (Fig. 4).
c) In Glass
* It is not possible to cut holes in toughened glass or double glazed
units except at the time of manufacture. Please consult a glazier.
** If fitting a ‘Magnetic’ model into double glazed glass a plastic
spacer bar must be used. Please consult a glazier.
The cat flap requires a circular hole with diameter of 212mm (83/8”).
(Fig .5).

d) In Walls
Follow the instructions for “Wood”, by using the enclosed cutting template.
Please note that additional tools, materials and competent DIY skills may
be required.

Fitting your cat flap
Your Staywell cat flap is fitted with the red 4 way lock on the inside of your house.
Temporarily place the cat flap in the hole and position the outside cover on
the outside of the house. From the outside mark screw holes through the
holes in the outside cover. (Fig. 6).
Remove the cat flap and drill the holes with a 4.5mm (3/16”) drill bit (Fig. 7).

Replace the cat flap in the hole and from the outside screw into place. (Fig. 8).
If the screws are too long they may need to be cut down to match the
depth of your door. Using over long screws may damage the cat flap. The
screws should be removed from the cat flap before cutting. File down to
ensure there are no sharp edges.
Push fit the 4 way locking turning dial into place (Fig. 8).
Finally, cover the screw holes with the blanking plugs on the outside frame
to ensure a neat finish (Fig. 8).

Magnetic tunnel
The fixed tunnel is an integral part of
the mechanism and MUST NOT be
cut or damaged, as it will affect the
operation of the latch mechanism (Fig. 9).
Operates by magnetism and
requires no batteries.
Tunnel extensions (optional)
The cat flap is designed to fit any depth of hole. It is recommended that
the tunnels be glued on to the frame and each other. (Fig. 10).
The fixed tunnel supplied with
the cat flap is 45mm (13/4”). To
purchase additional tunnels at a
depth of 47mm (17/8”) and to make
up the depth of the hole in your
wall, visit the Staywell website -

Using the 4 way lock
The 4 way lock allows you to control your cat’s access in and out of your
home.
It is a good idea not to use the 4 way lock until your pet is thoroughly
familiar with using the door. Your pet may become confused as to why you
have installed it.
Testing your magnetic cat flap
Position the 4 way lock in the ‘in or out’ position. Place collar key on
centre of tunnel. Let go of collar key and push door with your hand to open
(Fig. 11). Do not force flap open with magnet in hand (Fig. 12). Fit one
hanging key to your cat’s collar (Fig. 13).

Training your cat to use the cat flap
Most cats will learn to use the cat flap almost at once but there are a few
who may be a little nervous at first. The following tips will help your pet to
take full advantage of the outdoor freedom and indoor comfort – which
you want for your cat – and which your new cat flap provides.
The most important rule is to be patient with your cat. Don’t be in a hurry.
Let your cat work out for itself that it can go in and out of doors. Don’t
force it through the flap or it may become frightened.
Many cat owners install cat flaps when they move house. If this applies
to you, make sure that your cat is familiar with his or her surroundings
before you fit the cat flap. Take it on supervised trips outdoors on a
leash and make sure it also feels secure and comfortable in its new
indoor environment. Cats can develop long lasting fears in unfamiliar
surroundings.
Once you have installed your cat flap, leave the flap open for some time.
You can do this by using a long strip of masking tape; open the flap and
use the tape to keep it held open by fixing the other end of the tape to the
surface above. Make sure that the fixing is secure so that the flap can not
fall down accidentally. Let your cat become familiar with it and go in and
out freely.
Establish a motive for your cat to use the door. A good one is food.
First feed the cat near the door, inside and then near the door outside.
Repeat as often as you need to. Most cats, especially kittens, also have a
strong urge for freedom,
perhaps to hunt. Cats are
also social creatures –
they enjoy the company
of other cats. This can be
another reason for them
to explore outside.
If this is something new
to your cat, it may take
some patience to teach
your cat how to use it.
When your cat makes
progress, give them a
lot of praise - they’ve
earned it!

Training your cat to use the magnetic
collar key
Before allowing your cat to use the cat flap, it is wise to acquaint your
self with the operation of the magnetic lock. From the outside of the
house take the collar key in your hand and then move it to the bottom
of the fixed tunnel attached to the inner frame. You should hear the lock
mechanism “click”. (Please note that this will only work when the cat flap is
fully assembled).
Leaving the magnet on the tunnel, push the flap using your hand. You
should note that the flap will not open if you hold the collar key against the
flap in your hand – only when leaving it on the fixed tunnel. You can prove
this by trying to push the flap with your hand when the magnet is not on
the tunnel.
Only when the cat is comfortable going in and out of the cat flap whilst
the flap has been propped open, (in line with the general training tips in
the previous section) should you fit the collar key onto your cat’s collar.
When fixing the collar to your cat, ensure that the collar key is positioned
centrally below your cat’s chin. (Please note that the magnetic collar key is
required only to enter the cat flap).
Some cats can take time to get used to the operation of the magnetic cat
flap - some learning more quickly than others. The emphasis here is on
persistence; try using a favourite treat to not only coax your cat through
the cat flap, but to encourage the cat to move their head, and therefore
their collar key towards the base of the tunnel.
If your cat has only just become familiar with the using a cat flap, it may
take some patience to teach your cat how the magnetic function works.
When your cat makes progress, give them a lot of praise. Keep repeating
the exercise until your cat can come through the cat flap comfortably.

Cleaning the cat flap
Your cat flap is constructed in the highest quality material with a
toughened flap and has been designed to last for many years.
To maintain its appearance, occasional wiping with a damp cloth
is all that is necessary.
3 year warranty
Your Staywell product is provided with a three year warranty. Warranty
covers the replacement of parts, or at the Company’s discretion the
replacement of a complete product. Warranty only covers manufacturing
defects and does not cover consumer misuse or damage.
In the event that a warranty claim is necessary, please contact Staywell

authorisation of a Customer Care Representative who will advise you of
the procedures.
