Chapter 1 Introduction
Business-critical and time-sensitive applications such as VoIPor transaction processing need guaranteed
bandwidth. PLANETsnew10Mbpsand100MbpsBandwidth Managers, the BM-2010AandBM-2100, offer
networkadministrators aneasyyetpowerful means to allocatenetworkresources basedonbusiness
priorities, andto shape, analyzeandcontrolbandwidthusage. Expensive WANresources are more
effectivelyutilized, avoidingthe need for costlyupgrades while still meeting business priorities.
The PLANET BM-2010AandBM-2100aresimple toinstall,with two10/100MbpsEthernetportfor connecting
to the localnetworkand theWAN router respectively.A16x2 character LCDpanel makes installationand
maintenance easier andmore efficient. For bandwidth management, packetscanbe classified based on IP
address, IP subnet andTCP/UDP port number.The device has more than 20ofthe most common protocols
such as H.323, Oracle, HTTP,FTP,etc. for ease ofdefinition;theadministrator can thendefine policies to
ensure committed and maximumbandwidth levelsfor inbound /outboundtraffic in each class. The
administrator can alsodefine three prioritylevels for each policytoensure that highprioritypacketsreceive
the maximumavailable bandwidth. In addition,each policycan haveascheduledefined for whenthepolicy
is activated or inactivated in increments of5 minutes.
The BM-2010AandBM-2100 also enable administrators to effectivelymeasure traffic on the networkand
providecomprehensive graphical reportsabouthowbandwidthis beingused. The administrator canview
each internal hosts inboundandoutboundtraffic or each networkservices inboundandoutboundtraffic. The
BM-2010Aand BM-2100also provideagraphical report for either the top ten internal hostsor services that
generate traffic. Afree utility,BandwidthAnalyzer,is also provided to help you makefurther analysis ofthe
bandwidthusage. This reportingsystemhelpsadministrators quicklyunderstandandreallocate bandwidth
usage to an optimized leveland makebest use ofthe limited andexpensive Wide-area networkbandwidth.
For uninterruptedInternet access, the BM-2010AandBM-2100 alsoprovideanin-box bypass functionto
keep your Internet service available.

Chapter 2 Hardware Installation
2.1 Installation Requirements
Before installing the BandwidthManager, make sure your networkmeets the followingrequirements.
-Mechanical Requirements
The Bandwidth Manager is to beinstalled betweenyour router and local area network.The Bandwidth
Manager canbe placed on the table or rack. Locate the unit near the power outlet.
- Electrical Requirements
The Bandwidth Manager is powered from100/240 VAC. A standard IEC connector is used for the power
cable.Follow all applicable electrical codes. Frame ground should be tied to a common groundingpoint
using #18AWGcable.
NOTE: The BandwidthManageris apower-requireddevice, itmeans, theBandwidthManager will not
workuntil it is powered. Ifyour networked PCs will need totransmit dataall the time, please
consider use anUPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)for your Bandwidth Manager.It will prevent
you fromnetworkdataloss.Insomearea,installingasurge suppressiondevicemayalsohelpto
protect your BandwidthManager frombeing damaged byunregulatedsurgeor current tothe
Bandwidth Manager.
- Network Requirements
In order for Bandwidth Manager tomanage traffic, the traffic must pass throughBandwidth Manager at a
useful point in a network. Inmost situations, the bandwidthmanager should be placed behind the Internet
connection router.
This deploymentallowsthenetworkadministers to control all bandwidthbased on business priorities and
give business-critical and time-sensitive applications guarantee bandwidth and higher priority.
Business-critical applications can receivemaximumperformance while other less urgenttraffic is still
available onremainingbandwidth. Bandwidth Manageralso provides comprehensive reportingfunctions to
help monitor networkand bandwidth usage and allowadjustment ofthe bandwidth management policies
accordingly.
The Bandwidth Manager provides two 10/100Base-TXport for connecting to WAN (external) andLAN
(internal) side. The networkports are both MDI (media dependentinterface) port. Please use straight
Category5 UTP Ethernet cable to connect the network port toswitch, hubor otherdevices with MDI-X
interface and usecross-over cableto connect the networkport to router,DSL/Cable modemor other
devices with MDI interface.
2.2 Install Bandwidth Manager to Your Network
- Choose an Installation Site
Select a suitable place on the networkto install the Bandwidth Manager.
- Connect LAN Cables
Use standard LAN cables toconnect your LAN sideSwitch or Hubtothe LAN ports on BandwidthManager.
Both10Base-Tand100Base-Tconnections canbe used. The LANandWAN port ofbandwidthmanager
support Auto-Negotiation to connect withbest speed and duplex mode. The LAN port ofBandwidth

Manager is MDI port. Thus, youcan just use straight networkto connect the LAN port toyour switch or
hub.
- Connect WANCable
Connect the router, DSL or Cable modemto the WAN port on Bandwidth Manager.The LAN andWAN port
ofBandwidth Manager areboth MDI port. Thus, in some case, you mayneed to use cross-over cable to
connect your router, DSLor cable modem.
- Power Up
Connect thesuppliedpowercord toBandwidth Manager andusethepowerswitchthat inrear panel to turn
on the Bandwidth Manager.Use onlythepower cord provided. Using adifferent one maycausehardware
damage.
NOTE: Once you power onthe BandwidthManager, it will start to beep indicated it is onby-pass mode.
This is normal and when the systemstop to beep,the systembooting is completed.
- Check the LEDs
The PWRLED shouldbeON. The STATUS LEDshouldflash for about 1to2minutes,thenturnOff.This
LED will also flash when is reading datafromthe memory.Both theWAN and LANs LNK LED should be
on. Ifone oftheLED is off, please checkthe networkconnection. In some case, you mayneed to use
cross-over cableto connectthe LAN or WAN port to your networks.

Chapter 3 Getting Started
This chapter explains how to setup your computer to be a client to manage the Bandwidth Manager.
3.1 Initial Setup byLCD Panel
1. Press (ENTER) button to enter Select menu.
2. Choose Setup Networkand press (ENTER) button to enter IPsetup process.
3. Set the Bandwidth Manager IPaddress:
Please press (▲) or (▼) button to edit the Bandwidth Manager IPaddress. Press (ENTER)
button toedit next number. After editing all the number, press (ENTER) button to start the
Networkmaskconfiguration.
NOTE: You can press (▲) or (▼) longer for it the number to change in unit of10.
4. Set the Bandwidth Manager subnet mask:
Please press ((▲) or (▼)buttonto edit the BandwidthManager IPaddress. Press (ENTER)
button toedit next number.After editing all thenumber, press (ENTER) button to start the
Gatewayaddress configuration.
5. Set the Bandwidth Manager Gatewayaddress:
Please press (▲) or (▼) button to edit the Bandwidth Manager IPaddress. Press (ENTER)
button toedit next number.After editing all thenumber, press (ENTER) button to save the
configuration.
6. Confirmand Save Configuration:
Ifthe configuration is Ok,please press (ENTER) buttonto save. Otherwise, press (ESC) button to
go backto SELECT Menu.
7. After you press (ENTER), the following message is shown:

3.2 Logging in as Administrator
Nowyou can communicatewithBandwidth Manager byweb browser.
Open thewebbrowser andtype https://192.168.0.250:8889.Please notethat “8889”is theport number of
Bandwidth Manager management interface, “https”here is to invoke the SSLof you web browser.
You must keyin user name and password to enter itsweb management interface.
The default user name is “admin”without password.
Then, youwill enter Bandwidth Manager s Configuration Menu.

Chapter 4 Web Configuration
This chapter introduces howto configure the Bandwidth Manager to effectivelycontrol your bandwidth usage.
On the top ofthe Web interface, there is three major menu ofthe bandwidth manager:
SystemSettings:The basic systemconfigurations
Policy Editor:The policythat will be usedto manage the bandwidth
Report:The reporting system ofthe bandwidthmanagerbase on the systemsettings and pre-defined
policy
The bandwidth manager will need thethreeparameters before it operates thebandwidth control: Host,
(illustratedin section 4.1.6), Services (illustrated insection 4.1.7) and Policy,(illustratedin section4.2).
However,some ofthe configurations arealsorequired. Please refer to the related section for the details.
4.1 System Settings
Systemsettings menu contains threecategories:“General”allowsyoutoconfigurebasic network
parameters, Internet connection bandwidth and date/time. “Catalog”allowsyouto definehost andservices
information whichis neededfor policyeditor.“Admin”containsoptions tosetupSNMP,backup /restore
settings, upgradefirmware,etc.
4.1.1 Information
This section showsinformationabout the Bandwidth Manager

4.1.2 Network
You can setup Bandwidth Manager networksettings in this section.
♦ Host Name: Please assigna name that is easytoremember for Bandwidth Manager.
♦ Domain Name: Your localnetworkdomain name.
♦ DNS Server: Your ISPs DNS server IPor your DNS server IP.
♦ IP Address: Please assign an IPthatis not in use byother device for BandwidthManager.The default
IPaddress ofBandwidth Manager is 192.168.0.250. This IPaddress can be on different subnet from
other internal hosts that youwant to manage. For example, the Bandwidth Managers IPcan be
192.168.0.250 and you canuse itto manage internal hosts with IP in10.x.x.x subnet.
♦ Network Mask: Your local networksubnet mask.For example, 255.255.255.0.
♦ Default Gateway: Your local networkdefault gateway.For example, 192.168.0.254.
♦ Save: Press save button tosave all these configurations.
Note: If youhave modified the IPaddress to adifferent IPsubnet, you needto also modifytheIP
address ofmanagement clients IPaddress settings.
4.1.3 Bandwidth
Please enter your network bandwidthhere. The sumofguaranteed bandwidthfor all policies should not
exceed this value.
♦ Inbound Bandwidth: Inputthe downstreamspeed ofyour Internet connection (WAN port). The valid
value is form1 to 2048 in units ofkbps.
♦ Outbound Bandwidth: Input the upstreamspeed of your Internet connection(WAN port). The valid
value is form1 to 2048 in units ofkbps.
♦ Save: Press save button tosave all these configurations.
BM-2010Aallowsup to 10Mbps(10240kbps) and BM-2100allowsupto 100Mbps(102400kbps)
inbound/outboundbandwidth in both directions ofitsWANport. Pleasebeaware ofthebandwidththat your

4.1.4 Date/Time
The Date/Timemenu contains commands for setting BandwidthManager's timeand date required for
correctly record the bandwidth usagetime. User candirectly inputthedateand timeor specify theNTP server
for the device tosynchronize with time-server. Clickon “Date/Time”in thesystemsettings menu bar and the
Date/Time screen will appear as illustrated below:
♦ Date: Input the year andselect the Date fromthe pull-downlist respectively.
♦ Time: Select theTime fromthe pull-down list respectively.
♦ NTPServer: Local NTP(Networktime protocol) server IPor DNS name. If you want to manually
configure the date andtime, left this field blank.
Note: Please findbelow NTPserver web address for your referenceto set thetime-server.

♦ Time Zone: Systemadministrator must select the timezone for the region.
♦ Save: Press save button tosave all these configurations. If youhave input a NTPserver IPaddress or
DNS name, the Bandwidth Manager will tryto inquire the current time and update the Date and Time
field.
♦ RenewAllReport: When new configuredtimeis earlierthanold timesettings, youneedtoclick “Renew
All Report”or the report function can notworkproperly.
The Date/Timeinformationwill be used in thereporting system(refer to section 4.3). Ifyour Bandwidth
Manager canreach totheInternet, youcanfindthenearest NTPserver intheInternetfor your Bandwidth
Manager that should provide theaccurate date and time for the bandwidth manager.
NOTE:
1. Clicking RenewAll Report will clear all statistic datarecorded on the memoryofBandwidth Manager.
2. IfNTPserver is configured, the configured DateandTime will not work.
4.1.5 Host
Bandwidth Manager cancontrol thebandwidthusagevia host IPaddress. You must define local and/or
remote user sIPaddress that youwantto manage to thehost catalog. This host catalog is useful on
defining policy.The totalnumber ofhost catalog, service catalogandpolicies cannot exceed 512 for
BM-2010Aand1024 for BM-2100.
The Host Catalog pagelists all thedefined hostswithhost name, IPaddress andlocation. On the top ofthe

host table,thefollowing buttons are available:
♦ New - Create newhost catalog.
♦ Prev- Go to previous page.
♦ 1, 2, …- First, second, …page.
♦ Next- Next page.
On theActionfieldofeach host name, the following two buttons areprovided:
- Modifythehost catalog
- Delete the host catalog
After clicking “New”or Modifybutton, the following hostconfigurationpagewill be shown:
♦ Host Name: The name ofspecified IPaddress or a range ofIPaddress. With it, you can easilytell the
bandwidthusage throughthis meaningful name. For example, anamelike“Web_server”to adedicated
IP,or “Acct_Group”for the IPrangeofaccounting department.
♦ IP Address: IPor IPrange ofthis host. You can input bysingle IP address, IPrange, IPsubnet or mix
ofabout formats and divided bycomma. For example, 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.5, for the twodevices
using (IP address 1 and 5); 192.168.0.20-30 (for the range ofIPaddress from20 to 30), and
192.168.0.128/28 (for IPaddress from128 to 143).
♦ Location: Ifthe hosts position is on theWAN side ofBandwidth Manager in the network, please choose
external. Ifthe hosts position is on the LAN side ofBandwidth Manager, pleasechoose internal.

♦ Monitor: Enable or disableto monitor the traffic flow with this IPor IPrange andshowon the report
function.
♦ Description: Additional description ofthis host(s).
♦ Save/Cancel: Press save button tosave above configurations and Cancel button to discard your
configurations.
After clicking Save or Cancel button,the Host Catalogpagewill be shownagain. Toedit the host(s) you
have configured, please click Modifybutton on theAction field. Toremove the host(s) youhave configured,
please clickDelete button on theAction field.
4.1.6 Service
The ServiceCatalogcontains all thepopularservices that youmaywanttomanage. The total number ofhost
catalog, service catalog and policies can not exceed 512for BM-2010Aand1024for BM-2100.The
bandwidthManager have contained 22 predefineservices. For other Internet services, however,youcan
direct clickon Newto addthe services or clickon Modifyicon tomodifyand remove byclickon thedelete
icon.
