WhenusingtheEFX®,basicprecautionsshouldalwaysbefollowed,including
thefollowing:
• To ensure your safety and to protect the unit, read all the instructions
before assembling and usingtheEFX®556i.
• To ensure the proper use and safety of the EFX®556i,make sure that all
users read this manual. Please make this manual a part of your club’s
training program. Remind the club users that before beginning any fit-
nessprogram,he or sheshouldobtain a completephysicalexamination
from his or her physician.

• TheEFX®556ishouldneverbeleft unattendedwith the battery recharger
plugged in. Unplug the unit from the outlet when it is not in use, before
cleaning it, and before putting on or taking off parts.
• Do not allow children or those unfamiliar with its operation on or near
the EFX®. Do not leave children unsupervised around the EFX®.
• Use the EFX®556i only for its intended use as described in this manual.
Do not use accessory attachments that are not recommended by the

• Assembleand operate the EFX on a solid level surface. LocatetheEFX®
a few feet from walls or furniture. Check the unit before each use and
verify that all fasteners are secure. Maintain the EFX®in good working
condition.(Seethe Maintenance section).
• Wear proper exercise clothing and shoes during a workout—no loose
clothing.Tie long hair back.
• Never drop or insert any object into any opening. Keep towels and
hands away from moving parts.
• Use care when getting on or off the EFX®. Use the stationary handrail
whenever possible. Keep your body and head facing forward. Never
attempt to turn around on the EFX®.
• Never operate the unit if it is damaged,if it is not working properly,if it
has been dropped, or dropped in water. Return the unit to a service
center for examination and repair.
•Keepallelectricalcomponentsawayfromliquidstopreventshock.Do not
set anything on the casing, handrails, or display console. Place liquids
onlyintheappropriatereceptacles.
• Keep the optional battery recharger cord away from heated surfaces.
• Donot operatewhere aerosol (spray) products arebeing usedor where
oxygen is being administered.
• Do not use outdoors.

• Never place your hand(s) or feet in the path of the roller arm because
injury may occur to you or damage may occur to the equipment. Refer
to Diagram 1.

• Do not attempt to service the EFX®yourself other than the assembly and

abnormal symptoms, stop your workout immediately and consult your
physician.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS AND PROPER DISPOSAL
TheEFX®556i hasaninternal battery whichmust be removedbeforethe EFX®is
scrapped.Thebattery containsmaterials whichareconsidered hazardous tothe
environment.Proper disposal of the battery is required by federal law.
To remove the battery from the EFX®, take the following steps:
CAUTION:Unplug the battery recharger and disconnect it from
its receptacle at the rear of the EFX®.
Tools required: Phillips head screwdriver and hex wrench set.
1. Remove both the right and left rear covers from the EFX®.
2. Remove the top rear cover.
3. Unplug the black and red battery wires from the circuit board.
4. Separate the circuit board from the battery by removing four screws.
5. The battery is held in place with a metal bracket. Lift the battery away from
the bracket.
6. Disposeofthe batteryaccordingtothefederalHazardousWasteRegulations.
SAFETY APPROVAL
When identified with the ETL-c logo, the EFX has been tested and conforms to
the requirements of CAN/CSA-E-335-1/2-94, Safety of Household and Similar
Electrical Appliances.

The EFX®has been tested and found to comply with,

• the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules.
These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful
interference in a commercial installation.The EFX generates, uses, and can
radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance
withtheowner’s manualinstructions,maycause harmfulinterferenceto radio
communications. Operation of the EFX in a residential area is likely to cause

EFX®SELF-POWERED FEATURES
The power source for the EFX®is the user.When a person works out on the EFX
and moves the foot pedals at a stride rate above 40 strides per minute, the power
that is generated allows the EFX to function properly.
Informationaldisplaysappearwhenthebatteryisloworwhentheuserhasstopped
pedaling during a workout.The display provides minimal instructions to let you
know what to do to retain power.If the messages are ignored, the EFX will begin
shutdown procedures to maintain the charge of the battery. Refer to page 23,
InformationalDisplaysPriortoShutdown .
An optional battery recharger can be purchased and provides sustained power to
theEFX. Ifyou planto customizeyourunit,theoptional batteryrecharger ishighly
recommended.Topurchasetheoptional batteryrecharger,checkwithyourdealer.

The EFX is carefully inspected before shipment so it should arrive in good oper-
ating condition. Precor ships the unit in the following pieces:

❑upper column support with display console
❑handlebars(left andright)
❑upper column support clamp covers (2 pieces with split rubber grommet)
❑hardwarekitand Owner’sManual
CAUTION:This unitweighsover200pounds (90 kilograms).To preventinjury
toyourselfordamageto the equipment, obtain appropriateassistancebefore
removing the unit from the pallet.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT
TheEFX®556iincorporatesthePrecorSmartRate®andHeart Ratefeaturesinto its
display console. Devices, such as FitLinxxTM, that are CSAFETM compatible, can
alsobeattached.
The Precor “touch” heart rate is standard and provides electrode strips, called
“grips,”on thecenter handrails.When auser placeshis orher handsoverthe grips
and grasps the handrails, a heart rate is transmitted to the receiver.
Note: If a user does not wish to use the touch-sensitive hand grips, an optional
POLAR® chest strap can be purchased and worn.The chest strap transmits the
user’s heart rate to the display console’s receiver.

Carefully unpack the parts from the shipping container. Open the Hardware kit
and make sure that you have the following items as shown in Diagram 3:

Youdo notneedanyspecialknowledgeorexperiencetosetuptheEFX®.However,
because of the size and weight of the EFX, you will need to obtain appropriate
assistanceduring assembly.
ACQUIRE THE APPROPRIATE TOOLS
Obtain the following tools before assembling the EFX.
❑Wirecutter
❑Standardhex torquewrench
❑¹⁄₂-inchopen-endor box-endwrench
❑SAE Standard socket set
Note: After assembling the EFX, be sure to store the hex keys in a secure place.
The tools are used formaintenance procedures thatare described inthis manual.
INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
Follow these installation requirements when installing the EFX. If you do not
install the EFX according to the following guidelines, you could void the Precor
LimitedWarranty.
•SetuptheEFXonasolid,flatsurface. UnpackandassembletheEFXcloseto
where you’ll use it. Make sure that the flat surface under the unit is smooth and
level.A level unit is required for the user’s safety and for proper operation.
•Provide ample space around the unit.Openspace aroundthe unitmakes
for a safer mount and dismount.
•Filloutandmailthe limited warranty card.Tolocatetheserialnumber,place
yourselfattherearoftheunitfacingthedisplayconsole,kneeldownandlookat
rearlabelnearthepowerreceptacle.(Referto Diagram2 on page7.)Writethe
serialnumberontothePrecorLimitedWarrantycardfoundonthebackcoverof
this manual.Return topage 7 andwrite thenumber thereas well.
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
To assist you in the assembly, the items in the Hardware kit, shown in Diagram 3,
correspond to a particular letter in the alphabet.These letters appear throughout the
assemblyinstructions.RefertoDiagram3 on page 10.
1. Unpack the EFX®556i. Remove the packing materials and loose contents
(upper console assembly with electronic console, hardware kit, bracket
covers, and handrails) from inside the cardboard pockets and from around
the base frame assembly.
2. Pull the large cardboard piece away from the base frame assembly.Ask
for assistance to move the EFX®556i off the shipping pallet.You may need to
cut the tie wraps that hold the base frame and roller arms to the pallet.

3. Attach the upper assembly. Diagram 4.Have anassistant hold the upright
support over the base frame bracket, while you take the following steps:
a. Removeanytape(orwireties) thatfastenthecablestothe baseassembly.
Ensure that the cables are out of the way while your assistant aligns the
upright support to the base frame bracket mounts.
b. Placeawasher(B)oneachoffourstainlesssteelsocketheadscrews(A)and
insertthescrewsthroughthemountingholes.Placeawasher(B)andthreada
hexnut(C)ontoeachscrew.SeeDiagram4,#2.Wrenchtightenusinga¹⁄₄-inch
hexkey and¹⁄₂-inchopen-orbox-endwrench.SeeDiagram4,#3.
CAUTION:Donotstretch,crimp,ordamagethecable.Excesscablemaybe
gently pushed into the upper support tube. Cables damaged by improper
installationwillnotbe coveredbythe Precor LimitedWarranty.

4. Connect the cable. Diagram 5.Insert the cable into its receptacle.Just like a
telephone connection, a definite "click" is heard when a good connection is
made. If you do not hear a "click," try reinserting the cable again. Place the
excess cable inside the upper portion of the support tube.
Important: Recheck that the cable connection is secure after you push the
excess cable inside the support tube.

5. Attach the handlebars. Diagram6.Takethefollowingsteps:
a.Removethe six black screws (D) and sixwashers(B) from the Hardware
kit.Place a washer on each screw.
b.Pick up a handlebar and slide it onto the bracket.See Diagram 6, #1.
c.MakesurethatthehandlebarispositionedasshowninDiagram6,#1and#2.
d.Insert three black screws (D) with washers (B) and tighten the fasteners
withyour fingers.
Important:Do notwrenchtighten the fastenersuntilafter the linkagearm
is attached.
e.Perform steps b.through d.on the opposite side.
6. Attachthehandlebarlinkageto the foot pedal bytakingthefollowingsteps:
a.Remove the twoscrews (E), fourwashers(F), and twosteel bushings (G)
from the Hardware kit.Place a washer and bushing on each screw.
Note:Perform the following steps on one side at a time.
b.Thread the screw (E) with fasteners (F and G) into the roller arm mount.

c.Wrench tighten using a⁹⁄₁₆-inchsocketwrench.Diagram 8.
Important: Once the fasteners are secured, use a hex torque wrench to
tighten the two linkage arm screws to 200 in-lbs.

7. Align the handlebar linkage with the handlebar. Diagram 9, #1.Return to
thehandlebarbracketandstraightenthehandlebarsothatthelinkagebelowit
issetclosetoa 90degree angle.Tightenthe threescrewsoneach handlebar
using a ¹⁄₄-inch hex key.
8. Install the plastic cap onto the linkage arms. Diagram 9, #2. Position the
plastic cap over the fasteners and press on it so it snaps it into place.

9. Install the bracket covers. Diagram 10. Remove the two bracket covers,
andthesplit rubber grommet fromthepackaging. Remove four buttonhead
screws (J) from the Hardware kit.Then, take the following steps:
a.Usetwobuttonheadscrews (J)toattachtherearbracket coverto thecenter
tube.See Diagram 10, #1.Tighten the screws with the hex key provided.
b.Position thesplit rubbergrommetaround theuprightsupporttube.Slide the
grommet against the rear bracket cover to help secure it in place.
c.Usetheremainingtwobuttonheadscrews(J)toinstallthefrontbracketcover.
Alignthe mounting holesandtighten the screws.See Diagram 10,#2.
CAUTION:Do not overtightenthescrewsoryoumayinadvertentlycrack
theplastic covers. Damagedcovers due toimproper installation willnot
becoveredbythe Precor LimitedWarranty.
Note:You have completed the assembly of the EFX®556i.To level the unit,
continue with the steps on the next page.

CAUTION: A fully-assembled EFX is very heavy.To avoid possible in-
jury,obtain assistance.
10. Ifyou need tomove the EFX,ask someone for help. Lift the EFX from the
front and roll it into position on its rear wheels. See Diagram 11, #1.
11. Level the unit. Diagram 11, #2.To help keep the unit stable, the EFX has a
height adjuster at thefront ofthebase assembly.Checktomakesurethatthe
unit does not wobble from side to side or front to back.
To counteract any rocking motion, ask your assistant to grasp the upright
support and lift the front of the unit off the floor.
• To correct front to rear wobble, turn the height adjuster clockwise which
raises the height of the front end.
• To correct side to side wobble, turn the height adjuster counterclockwise
which lowers the height of the unit.
CAUTION:The height adjuster helps level the unit on uneven surfaces, but
cannotcompensateforextremelyuneven floors.Donotuse theheightadjuster
toraise orlower theunit morethan ¾-inches.
SUPPLYING POWER TO THE EFX®556I
The EFX does not require an electrical power connection. It has an internal battery
that is recharged every time a user works out for a reasonable period of time. A
pedalingspeedabove40stridesperminutemustbemaintainedforseveralseconds
beforethePrecorbannerappearsonthedisplay.Oncethebannerappears,theuser
canpressQUICKSTARTorENTER tobeginworkingout.Refertopage26, Exercis-
ingontheEFX ,formore information.

TESTING THE HEART RATE DISPLAY
Verify that the heart rate display is operationalbeforecustomers begin using the
machine.
1. Begin pedaling and maintain a stride rate above 40 strides per minute.The
Precorbanner will appear onthe display.
2. Grab both metalgrips on thehandrails, notjustthe onehandrailas shownin
Diagram12.
3. Wait five to ten seconds. A number indicating your heart rate (beats per
minute) should appear in the small upper right display.
4. Ifthe heart rate displayappears, thecablesare properlyconnectedand the
heart rate feature can be a viable part of a user’s workout.
5. If the heart rate display does not appear, press RESET to return to the
Precor banner and then, ask someone else to try steps 2 and 3.If no heart
rate number appears, you may need to disassemble the handrails or the
upright support to check that the heart rate cables are fully engaged.
Note: To conduct electrical impulses from a user’s heart, the electrode strips
(handrailgrips) mustbe incontactwith the user’s skin.Usually, theconcentration
of salts in a person’s perspiration provides enough conductivity to transmit a
signal to the receiver in the display console. However some people, because of
body chemistry or erratic heart beats cannot use the heart rate touch-sensitive
feature on the EFX. A POLAR®chest strap may provide better results. Refer to
ObtainingService on page 7.

Club Information
CHANGING THE CLUB SETTINGS
The Club “custom” settings are accessed through specific codes that help elimi-
nateunauthorizedaccess. RefertoDiagram13 tolocatethekeys.Information that
you can access and features that can be customized are as follows:
•Language—Determinewhich languageisusedtodisplay theuserprompts.
•Units of Measure — Select between U.S.Standard and Metric displays.
•MaximumWorkoutTime — Set a maximum limit on workout time.
Note:Remember,an additionalfive-minutecool-downperiodis appendedto
a completed program, so adjust the maximum time limit accordingly.
•MaximumPauseTime —Setthemaximum duration forwhich a personcan
“pause”his or herworkout.
•Odometer,HoursofUse,SoftwareVersion,andErrorLog—TheEFXstores
the cumulative strides, the number of hours that the unit has been in use, the
software version and software type (which is valuable when calling Customer
Support),andanerrorlog(usefulwhentroubleshooting).

To access the Club settings, the following must occur:
❑Electrical power must be supplied.
The foot pedal speed must be maintained at 40 strides per minute. Or, the
optionalbatteryrecharger must be plugged into the EFX andconnected to an
appropriatepowersource.
Note:The optional battery recharger connection is highly recommended, if
you plan to customize the EFX.
❑Check that the Precor banner appears on the display and,if necessary,
maintain the minimum stride rate.
❑Press the appropriate key sequences within the allocated time.
Tochangethelanguage,selecttheunitsofmeasure and setthe maximumworkout
and pause times press the following:
RESET, ▼, ▲, ▼, RESET, ▼, ▲, ▼
Important:ToaccessClub Custom mode,pressRESETwhilethePrecorbanneris
displayed.Within ½ second, begin pressing the key sequences.If the system does
notdetecta keypress(within½ second afterRESET),it returnstothebanner.Once
youbeginenteringakeysequence, eachkey mustbe pressedwithin foursecondsof
theotherorthePrecorbannerreappearsandyouhavetobeginagain.
The functions of the display console keys while in Club Custom mode are de-
scribed in the box below.

Note: The RESET key followed by the number keys, 5, 6, 5, 1, 5, 6, 5 may be
pressed instead of using the ▼▲ keys. But, in either case, RESET must be
pressed initially, for example: RESET, 5, 6, 5, 1, 5, 6, 5.
SELECTING THE LANGUAGE
You can select a language for the prompts that appear on the display by using
the ▼▲ keys to make your choice and pressing ENTER to select it. The EFX
supportsseveral languagessuchas,English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch,
andPortuguese.

DETERMINING THE UNITS OF MEASURE
Two different units of measure can be selected, Metric or U.S.Standard .Make your
selection using the ▼▲ keys. Press ENTER once the correct unit is displayed.
Note: Anytime you wish to exit the Club Custom mode, press the RESET key.
Any previous display attributes that you selected by pressing ENTER are saved
andrecorded inmemory.
SETTING A WORKOUT TIME LIMIT
You can limit how long a user works out by setting a duration between 1 and 240
minutes.The EFX also lets you choose “no limit” which allows the user to select a
programand workout indefinitely.(Note thatthe usermust enteraworkouttime of0
usingthe numeric keysattheENTERTIME promptbeforeworking out“indefinitely.”)
Important: If the club setting is “no limit” and the user enters “0” at the ENTER
TIME prompt, then the REMAININGTIME display does not appear when a user
works out.(An exception to this rule is theWeight Loss Program.)
Note:The QuickStart program is set at the Club limit (see page 20).
Use the ▼▲keys to select a workout time limit. For example, if you set the workout
timelimitto20minutes,theEFXallowsuserstospecifyaworkoutbetween1and20
minutes. Users would not be able to specify a time longer than 20 minutes.
Note:The touch-sensitive keys can be gently pressed and held to view several
selections.The longer the key is held down, the faster the numbers scroll past.
Important:Takeintoaccountthattheuser will get an additional five-minutecool-
downperiod appended to his or her workout,so adjust thetimelimitaccordingly.
SETTING A PAUSE TIME LIMIT
SettingapausetimelimitisusefulbecausetheEFXexitstheprogramandreturnsto
thePrecorbanneratapredetermined intervalafter theuserstopspedaling.
Usethe▼▲keystosetapausetimelimitbetween1and120seconds(twominutes).
VIEWING THE ODOMETER, HOURS OF USE, SOFTWARE
VERSION AND ERROR LOG
The display console keys that you need to press to view the odometer, the num-
berofhours the EFX has been in use, thesoftwareversion and any error codes,
are as follows:
