1Introduction
The Pregis Quantum Series includes the Quantum XT and Quantum XTW systems. Each system dispenses
recycled paper void fill both on demand and at predetermined lengths, as needed. These user-friendly
systems save storage space and reduce packaging material waste while providing unmatched safety,
reliability and enhanced ergonomic features that increase operator productivity.

2Preventative Maintenance
The Pregis Quantum Series requires very little maintenance. The following items should be checked when
visiting a customer with this equipment.
1. Run machine and check for the following
•Paper is flowing unobstructed into machine on a straight path from the paper holder to the
loop.
•Paper not bunching up inside machine.
•Activating the machine’s power tear assist yields consistent, clean and complete tearing of
paper. Ensure the machine does not eject paper out the back of the drive roller.
•Foot pedal is functional
•LCD is on and displaying correct information
2. Actuate tear assist plate by hand with the machine powered off. Make sure plate rotates freely and
there isn’t any excessive binding.
3. Lift top nip roller assembly
•Ensure the “close roller” error displays when the assembly is open
•Inspect both upper roller for damage, make sure they spin freely
4. Spin orange drive roller by hand (machine powered off) and ensure it spins freely without excessive
resistance.
5. Visual Inspection of machine
•Inspect orange roller, remove any labels, stickers or paper debris.
•Inspect power and foot switch wires for any abrasion. Make sure they do not come in contact
with flow of paper.
•Bull horn and Loop are installed correctly. No components are loose or cracked.

Tear Assist Not Working
Customer reports issues with the paper not tearing properly. Assuming all mechanical systems are
functioning properly the software can be adjusted to increase or decrease the tear parameters.
The powered tear assist is set to a factory default of 175 Speed and 55 Time. Sometimes this setting must
be adjusted to achieve optimal tear performance depending on machine and paper type. Follow the steps
below to properly adjust machine’s power tear assist feature.
1. Cycle power on machine. During boot cycle hold “mode” button and “rabbit” button
2. Enter “263” password. Use “plus” button to cycle numbers and “rabbit” button to rotate through
characters. Hit “home” button once password is entered.
3. Adjust Tear time parameter in +/- 5ms increments. Increase time if paper isn’t tearing well enough.
Decrease time if paper is shooting out back of drive roller. Cycle power to save new settings.

Head Popping Open or Paper Slipping
The magnetic block holds the upper roller assembly in place and provides compression of the paper for
proper machine operation. Improper magnetic block location can cause paper slippage if adjusted too far
open (High). If the block is adjusted to tightly closed (Low), the upper rollers can pop open during
operation. Follow the steps below to adjust a magnetic block.
1. Lift machine upper roller assembly into the full open position. Assembly should “click” into upright
position.
2. Slightly loosen both screws on the magnetic block using a 5mm Allen Driver.
3. Move the block up or down (depending on symptom machine is displaying).
4. Hold block in desired location and re-tighten
5. Run machine and check for improvement.
6. Repeat process until machine issue is resolved.

Paper Tearing During Operation
Paper holder orientation is critical to proper Quantum function. The paper holder should ideally be oriented
directly under the paper intake loop, so that the flow of paper is straight up and over the middle of the bull
horn. Offsetting the paper to one side can cause it to track off the side of the bull horn and tear while in
feeding. Follow steps below to resolve paper tearing while feeding into the machine.
1. Ensure paper is aligned directly under paper intake loop
2. Make certain there is no interference to the flow of paper as the machine is running
3. Lower the paper cradle as low as possible. The longer the paper path, the tighter it will become.
Narrower paper passes through the machine more easily.
4. If paper tearing persists after the setup has been optimized machine speed may need to be reduced.

Clear Jam Error
The drive train has several components secured with setscrews. If one or more of the setscrews comes
loose the machine will start displaying a “clear jam” error when trying to dispense paper. This happens
because the motor is spinning but the PCB no longer sees pulse counts from the inner flange. Often times
at the beginning stage of the setscrews coming loose the machine will operate fine without paper. Once
paper is added and the machine is operated under load the “clear jam” error will return.
There are 3 locations to check when set screws have come loose. Before performing this operation remove
power from the machine! First check the set screws on the drive pulleys. If those are tight, check the set
screws on the orange roller.
1. Remove gray side cover from outboard (left) side of the machine
2. Locate set screws on both the motor pulley and drive shaft pulley.
3. Use long T-Handle Allen driver to tighten setscrews.
4. If both pulley setscrews were tight then the drive roller screws should be checked. Using a T-8 L
Torx driver remove the orange roller outer flange cover
5. Remove snap ring and outer flange.
6. Tighten set screws on orange roller and re-assemble machine.
7. If setscrews don’t resolve the “clear Jam” error, there is a mechanical issue in the system adding
extra load to the motor.

Power Switch On With Dark Screen
There are 4 primary places to check if a machine will not power up or screen remains dark while machine
is operating.
•Using a multi-meter check incoming power for adequate voltage. If power is questionable try
machine on a separate outlet.
•Open door on the face of the power entry module (next to power cord entrance). Slide out fuse
holder and check for continuity across machine fuse. If needed replace with 3amp slow blow fuse.
•Remove the machines side panel cover exposing the underside of the PCB. Use a multi-meter to
check the voltage coming from the power entry module to the pcb. Damaged modules will supply
low voltage to the PCB. If this is the case replace module.
•Check the connections on the ribbon cable between the PCB and the User Interface PCB

4RFID Information
Overview:
Quantum XT/XTW machines are equipped with a system capable of detecting RFID tag (1023706)
embedded in the fanfold bundle helping ensure that compatible fanfold paper is being run through the
machine. The machine uses its odometer to track how much paper has been run since the last RFID tag
was detected. If the threshold is reached and a new RFID tag has not been read the machine will display
a soft error code 600. At this time the machine will allow the operator to continue dispensing paper. Once
the threshold is reached a second time without seeing a new RFID tag the machine displays a hard error
code 601 permanently disabling the use of the machine. At this time the only way to re-activate the machine
is with the software password and a good RFID tag.

Enabling/Disabling RFID Systems:
All Quantum’s should have enabled and set to length 1100 unless approved by Category Management.
The RFID system protects Pregis revenues and machine performance by assuring only Pregis approved
material runs through the machine. All Fanfold material is equipped with RFID Tags.
1. Outer cover should be removed to do a visual check that an antenna connection is present on the
PCB. If an RFID tag is available, you can also confirm operations of the antenna by using the motor
test screen. See section “clearing error codes” for detailed instructions.
2. Cycle power on machine. During boot cycle hold “Mode Select” button (bottom left) and “Rabbit”
button (top right).
3. Enter “263” Password. Use “plus” button to cycle numbers and “Rabbit” button to rotate though
characters. Hit “home” button once password is entered.
4. “Security Length” Parameter controls function of the RFID system. When this value is set to Zero
the system is Disabled. This should only be done on a per customer basis to meet their needs if
something would arise. Value should be set to 1100M to enable the system for normal use. Ensure
“RFID Freq” is set to “USA” for US installations, or “EUR Upper” for Europe installations.
5. Once all settings are correct cycle power on machine and settings will be saved.

5Trouble Shooting:
If customer reports 600 or 601 error codes, the machine is having problems seeing the RFID tags. The
following items should be checked.
1. Verify the paper being used is Pregis paper.
2. Verify the paper has RFID tags. Tags will be located
•0.5’’-1.5’’ from the top and 0.5’’-1.5’’
•from the long side of the bundle.
3. RFID antenna is properly connected to PCB.
4. Security length is set to 1100M or higher. Values lower than 1100M may cause problems.
Clearing Error Codes:
1. 600 error code can be cleared by the customer. Either pressing the Mode Select button or cycling
power will cause the error code to go away. If a faulty machine or paper caused the error code to
be displayed, the customer will only be able to run 2 more bundles of paper until a 601 error code
will be displayed.
2. 601 error code can only be cleared by a Pregis technician
a. Use a known good RFID tag. Service techs should carry an RFID tag in their toolbox for
this purpose.
i. Cycle power on machine and hold Rabbit and Turtle during the boot cycle. Enter “263”
password then press the Mode Select button. This brings you into Motor Test mode.
ii. Hold RFID tag below motor and above the power cord. If tag was read properly, you
should see the counter on the bottom of the display change to one.
iii. Each unique will only increment the counter once. After the tag has been read the
Quantum will not “re-read” that tag until 30 unique tags have passed through.
