QUICK START GUIDE

SUMMARY OF SET UP PROCESS
This Quick Start Guide describes how to install four 2.5” storage drives in
the Pegasus J4*, then how to connect the power and Thunderbolt cable so the
device can be used and managed with a Thunderbolt equipped computer. The
installation steps in general are listed as follows:
STEP 1. INSTALL HARD DISKS (PAGE 3) *
STEP 2. CONNECT THE POWER (PAGE 6)
STEP 3. MAKE THE THUNDERBOLT CONNECTION (PAGE 7)
STEP 4. POWER ON THE J4 AND CHECK THE LEDS(PAGE 8)
STEP 5. CONFIGURE THE RAID ARRAY *
*Note
There are two versions of the Pegasus J4 available, one is
shipped without any physical storage drives. For this version,
it is necessary to install four 2.5” HDD or SSD into the empty
storage drive bays to use the device and then configure a
file system on the drives. The other version is shipped with
drives installed and ready to use.

INTHE PACKAGE
The Pegasus J4 package includes the following items:

Follow the instructions for your version of the J4. One version has storage
drives installed and configured; another version requires the user to install
and configure 2.5” SATA storage drives.
Important
The Pegasus J4 requires a Thunderbolt cable (sold separately)
for connection to the host computer.

I NSTALL HARD DISKS
If your J4 has drives installed, skip ahead to “Connect the power” on page
6. If your J4 does NOT have drives installed, first install four storage drives
in the J4.
REMOVE HOUSING COVER
1. Make sure the J4 is
powered off, and that
no power cable or

2. Turn the J4 upside
down and place it on
a clean, dry table,
or similar flat stable
surface. Be careful not
to scratch the housing.
3. Use a small Phillips
screwdriver to remove
the five screws that
secure the top housing.
Caution
The electronic components within the Pegasus J4
enclosure are sensitive to damage from Electro-Static
Discharge (ESD). Observe appropriate precautions at all
times when handling the J4 and storage drives

4. Hold the loosened housing top in place and turn the J4 back to the
normal position (bottom facing down). Place it on the table a lift the
housing top so that it detaches completely from the J4 chassis. Four
empty storage drive bays should be visible.
5. Place a new storage drive into an empty bay with the contact edge
ready to receive the contacts in the drive bay and oriented so the top
side is facing up (the top has a label with specifications and other
information about the drive).

6. With the drive in position, push with your fingers on the edge opposite
the drive contacts until the drive is firmly seated in the drive bay.
7. Attach the anchor screw to secure the drive in place.
8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each remaining hard drive.
9. Replace the housing top into its proper positing.
10. Hold the unsecured housing in place and turn the J4 upside down
once more.
11. Replace the screws and snug them tight. The J4 is ready to be
connected to a computer and a power source.

C ONNECT THE POWER
Insert the power cord into the power receptacle on the back of the Pegasus
J4. Plug the other end into a suitable power source such as a wall outlet or
power strip.

M AKE THE THUNDERBOLT CONNECTION
Connect a Thunderbolt cable to either of the Thunderbolt ports on the back
of the Pegasus J4, and connect the other end of the cable to a Thunderbolt
port on your computer. The unused Thunderbolt port on the J4 can be used to
connect to another J4 or a monitor.
Important
Make sure the Thunderbolt cable connector is oriented
properly to be inserted into the Thunderbolt port.

P OWER ON THE J4 AND CHECK THE LEDS
Once the Thunderbolt connection is established it will be detected
automatically and the J4 will power on. Check the LED indicators on the front
to verify that the device is functioning properly.

It takes about 30 seconds for the device to fully boot up. After booting, the
LEDs should display as described here:
• The Status LED lights blue
• The Connection LEDs light blue for any connected port
• The Drive LEDs light blue

CONFIGURE STORAGE
The Plug and Play version of the J4 does NOT require any configuration of
the storage RAID array, but you can change the configuration if you prefer.
Once the device drive is installed, the four hard disks installed in each unit
appear as four separate individual drives to the operating system. For Mac OS
systems, use the Mac Disk Utility to configure the storage drives. Follow the
instructions in the Disk Utility or refer to the User Manual for a more detailed
guide to using the Disk Utility. The Disk Utility in the Mac OS is located in the
Utilities folder. Open the Applications folder to find the Utilities or use the Find
function in Mac OS Finder.
Storage drive configuration on the J4 involves two general steps:
1. Opening the Mac Disk Utility.
2. Using the Disk Utility to create a new file system and/or RAID set or
concatenated disks (JBOD).
Use the Disk Utility to create one of the following:
• A JBOD “Create a concatenated disk set”
• A striped RAID (RAID 0) set “Create a striped RAID set”
• A mirrored RAID (RAID 1) set “Create a mirrored RAID set”
The product manual for the J4 contains step-by-step instructions for using
the Mac OS Disk Utility to install a file system and RAID or JBOD configuration
once the drives have been installed.

ÜBERSICHT ÜBER DIE AUFSTELLUNG
Diese Schnellstartanleitung beschreibt, wie Sie vier 2,5-Zoll-Datenträger
im Pegasus J4* installieren und anschließend Netz- und Thunderbolt-
Kabel anschließen, damit das Gerät mit einem Thunderbolt-ausgestatteten
Computer genutzt und verwaltet werden kann. Die allgemeinen
Installationsschritte sind nachstehend aufgelistet:

*Hinweis
Es gibt zwei Versionen des Pegasus J4, von denen eine ohne
physikalische Datenträger geliefert wird. Bei dieser Version
müssen Sie zur Nutzung des Gerätes vier 2,5-Zoll-HDDs oder
-SSDs in den leeren Einschüben installieren und anschließend
ein Dateisystem auf den Festplatten konfigurieren. Die
andere Version wird mit installierten Festplatten geliefert und
ist direkt einsatzbereit.

Befolgen Sie die Anweisungen zu Ihrer Version des J4. Bei einer Version
sind bereits Datenträger installiert und konfiguriert; bei der anderen Version
müssen Sie 2,5-Zoll-SATA-Festplatten installieren und konfigurieren.
Wichtig
Der Pegasus J4 benötigt zur Verbindung mit dem Host-
Computer ein Thunderbolt-Kabel (separat erhältlich).

F ESTPLATTEN INSTALLIEREN
Falls Ihr J4 bereits über installierte Festplatten verfügt, springen Sie
zu „Stromversorgung herstellen” auf Seite 6. Falls Ihr J4 nicht mit
installierten Festplatten geliefert wird, installieren Sie zunächst vier
Datenträger im J4.
GEHÄUSEABDECKUNG ENTFERNEN
1. Stellen Sie sicher, dass
der J4 abgeschaltet
und weder Netz-noch
Thunderbolt-Kabel
angeschlossen ist.
2. Drehen Sie den J4 um,
legen Sie ihn auf einen
sauberen, trockenen Tisch
oder einen vergleichbaren
flachen, stabilen
Untergrund. Achten Sie
darauf, das Gehäuse
nicht zu zerkratzen.
3. Entfernen Sie die fünf
Schrauben des oberen
Gehäuses mit einem kleinen
Kreuzschraubendreher.

Achtung
Die elektronischen Komponenten im Inneren des
Pegasus J4-Gehäuses sind empfindlich gegenüber
elektrostatischer Entladung. Beachten Sie bei
der Handhabung von J4 und Festplatten stets
entsprechende Vorsichtsmaßnahmen

4. Halten Sie die gelöste Gehäuseabdeckung fest, drehen Sie den J4
wieder um (Unterseite zeigt nach unten). Stellen Sie ihn auf den
Tisch, lösen Sie die Gehäuseabdeckung vom J4-Gehäuse. Nun
sollten Sie vier Einschübe sehen.
5. Setzen Sie eine neue Festplatte in einen leeren Einschub ein, wobei
Sie die Kontaktseite an den Kontakten im Einschub ausrichten und
die Oberseite nach oben zeigt (die Oberseite ist mit einem Etikett
versehen, das technische Daten und andere Informationen über die
Festplatte enthält).

6. Wenn die Festplatte richtig ausgerichtet ist, drücken Sie mit den
Fingern auf die den Kontakten gegenüberliegende Seite, bis die
Festplatte sicher im Einschub sitzt.
7. Befestigen Sie die Festplatte mit den bezeichneten Schrauben.
8. Wiederholen Sie die Schritte 5 und 6 bei den verbleibenden
Festplatten.
9. Bringen Sie die Gehäuseabdeckung wieder richtig an.
10. Halten Sie die ungesicherte Abdeckung fest, drehen Sie den J4
erneut um.
11. Bringen Sie die Schrauben wieder an. Nun kann der J4 an einen
Computer und eine Steckdose angeschlossen werden.

S TROMVERSORGUNG HERSTELLEN
Stecken Sie das Netzkabel in den Netzanschluss auf der Rückseite des
Pegasus J4. Verbinden Sie das andere Ende mit einer geeigneten Steckdose,
z. B. einer Wandsteckdose oder Steckerleiste.
