Quanser QNET Physics and Dynamics User manual

Quick Start Guide: QNET Physics and Dynamics
Check Components and Details
STEP 1
Make sure your QNET Physics and Dynamics experiment includes the following components:

To complete your QNET Physics and Dynamics board setup, you will also need the following hardware:
Make sure the following versions of LabVIEW™ and required add-ons are installed:
1. LabVIEW™ 2012 or later
2. NI DAQmx 9.5.5 or later
3. NI ELVISmx 4.4 or later
4. LabVIEW™ Control Design and Simulation Module 2012 or later
1. Quanser QNET Physics and
Dynamics board, including:
a) Two pendulum rods
b) Coupling
c) Sliding mass
d) Free pulley
e) Two 100g and two 50g free weights
2. Table Tennis Ball
3. Anchor Screws
4. Hex key
5. Extension spring
6. Cable
Note: The QNET curriculum resources are

121. NI ELVIS II or NI ELVIS II+workstation
2. +5VDC / 5A, +15VDC / 2A,
-15VDC / 0.8A Power Supply
3. USB Cable
Note: All references to NI ELVIS II in
this guide apply to both NI ELVIS II
and NI ELVIS II+ devices.

GPower on the NI ELVIS II using the power switch on the back
of the unit. The READY and ACTIVE LEDs on the top NI ELVIS II
panel should briey light, and the READY LED stays on.
Slide the PCI
connector at
the back of
the QNET
board into
the female
connector on
the NI ELVIS II.
Place the handle
on the front of
the QNET board
over the bracket
located on the
front of the NI
ELVIS II.
Using the screws and hex key provided,
anchor the QNET board to the ELVIS II
in the locations indicated. Connect the NI ELVIS II
power supply to the back
panel of the NI ELVIS II.
Use the NI ELVIS II USB cable
to connect the NI ELVIS II
Unit to your computer.

AEnsure that the NI ELVIS II power switch is in
the OFF position.

HEnsure that
the +5V LED
on the QNET
board is lit.
Power on the QNET Physics and
Dynamics board by turning the NI
ELVIS II prototyping board power
switch. The POWER LED next to
the switch should light up.

Setup Hardware

To setup the complete QNET Physics and Dynamics, please read the following instructions carefully. For full details, see
the QNET Physics and Dynamics User Manual.
Testing the QNET Physics and Dynamics

Click on the STOP
button to stop running
the VI.
Click on the
white arrow
to run the VI.
Make sure that the Pulley
Encoder graph is also
showing a change in angle
when the pulley is spun
back and forth.
1. Remove the sliding mass from its storage
location on the support bar, and place it
next to the electromagnetic as shown.
2. Press the Lock Mass button on the VI,
and check that the mass becomes rmly
attached to the magnet.
Press the catapult arm down until it latches
against the magnetic arm lock. Make sure
that it is rmly held in place. Press the FIRE
button and check that the Arm Speed graph
shows a change in the arm angle.
Select the device name to match your
NI ELVIS II device as shown in the NI
Measurement & Automation Explorer
in the Dev i ce control.

Make sure your PC,
NI ELVIS II, and QNET
board are powered ON.
Open the Quick Start folder from the Physics and Dynamics
folder in the QNET Resources. The QNET Resources are available
for download from www.ni.com/qnets.

COpen the LabVIEW Virtual Instrument (*.vi)
found under the Quick Start folder

The +5 LED on
the QNET Physics
and Dynamics
board is not lit.
• Ensure that the PCI connector on the QNET board is properly connected to the female
connector on the NI ELVIS II unit.
•Check that the system power switch, located on the back panel of the NI ELVIS II unit,
and the prototyping power switch, situated on the top of the NI ELVIS are ON.
•If the +5V LED is still not lit, then the +5V fuse on the Protection Board of the NI ELVIS II
has been triggered. See the Protection Board Fuses in the NI ELVIS II User Manual.
