plastic-compatibleoil(availablewithM.T.H.'sMaintenanceKit,sold
separately)oralighthouseholdoil.Followthelubricationpoints.

BasicOperation
TheThrottleknobcontrolshowfastyourtrainwilltravel.
Turnthethrottleknobup½-way,untiltheengineandcabooselightsshinebright.
PuttheengineintomotionbypressingtheDirectionbuttononyourtransformer
once.(holditforapproximately1second)
IftheenginedoesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,
youmaynothavesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove.Turnthe
throttleupabithigheruntilthetrainbeginstomove.
Youcanlockyourengineintoadirection(forward,neutral,orreverse)sothatitwillnot
changedirections.Todothis,puttheengineintothedirectionyouwant,thenremovethe
enginefromthetrackandslidetheON/OFFswitchlocatedonthebottomoftheengine
totheOFFposition.Theenginewillnotchangedirection(includinggoingintoneutral)
untilyoufliptheswitchbacktoONtoreturntheenginetoitsnormalcondition,evenif
theengineiskeptwithoutpowerforextendedperiodsoftime.

todepressthebutton.Itwillstopwhenyoureleasethebutton.

reversewitheachpressandreleaseofthedirection
button.Theengineisprogrammedtorestartinneutral
eachtimethetrackvoltageisturnedofffor25seconds

Regularlylubricateallsiderodsandlinkagecomponentsandpickuprollers
topreventsqueaking.Uselighthouseholdoil,suchasthatfoundin
M.T.H.'smaintenancekit.Donotoveroil.Useonlyadroportwooneachpivotpoint.
GreasingInstructions
Addgreasetotheinternaldrivegears(accessedthroughthegearbox)annuallyorafter
every50hoursofoperation.Inordertoaccessandputgreaseintothegearbox:

Removetheboilerbyunscrewingthe
fourchassisscrewsandlifttheboiler
awayfromthechassis.
Removethesmoke
unitassemblyand
lightbracket.
Openthegearbox.Unscrewthethree
screwsontheplatelocatedinfrontof
themotorandliftthemotor.

CleaningtheWheels,TiresandTrack
ProtoSmokeUnitOperation
Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickupsfordirtandbuildup,whichcan
causepoorelectricalcontactandtractionandprematurelywearouttheneoprenetraction
tires.Wheelsandtirescanbecleanedusingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholappliedwith
acottonswab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluidand
acleanragordenatured(notrubbing)alcohol.Unplug
thetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack,turningthe
ragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothon
therails.Becausethemanufacturingprocessleavesa
coatingonRealTraxcenterrail,youshouldcleantherails
afterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticean
electricalsmellduringinitialuseasthecoatingwearsoff;
thisisnormal).Thereafter,keepaneyeonthetrackand
cleanitwhenitgetsdirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontact
andtolengthenthelifeofthetires.
Thissteamlocomotivecontainsasmokeunitthatoutputssmokethroughthesmokestack
ontheboileroftheengine.Thesmokeunitisessentiallyasmallheatingelementand
wickthatsoaksupandthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsaharmlesssmoke.
Thesmokeisthenforcedoutofthestackby asmallelectricfan.
Withafeweasymaintenancesteps,youshouldenjoytrouble-freesmokeunitoperation
foryears.
Whenpreparingtorunthisengine,add15-20dropsof
smokefluidthroughthesmokestack.Werecommend
M.T.H.ProtoSmoke,Seuthe,LGB,orLVTSfluids(a
smallpipetteofProtoSmokefluidisincluded).Do
notoverfilltheunitorthefluidmayleakoutandcoat
theinteriorenginecomponents.
Ifyouchoosenottoaddthefluid(orhavealready
addedthefluidbutchooseto
dy.
Whenthesmokeoutputwhilerunningtheenginebeginstodiminish,addanother
10-15dropsofsmokefluid orturnthesmokeunitoff.
Whenstoringtheunitforlongperiodsoftime,youmaywanttoaddabout15drops

wicksoakupthefluidfor15minutespriortooperation.
Ifyouexperiencepoorornosmokeoutputwhenthesmokeunitisonandhasfluid,
checkthewicktoseeifithasbecomehard,blackened,andunabsorbentaroundthe
heatingelement.Removetheboilerasshownonpage7.Removethesmokeunit
inspectioncoverfromthelocomotive's
body(seeright).Afterremovingthe
chassisandinspectioncoverscrews,lift
theinspectionplateawayandinspectthe
wick.Ifitisdarklydiscoloredandhard,it
shouldbereplaced.Whenprimingnew
wickadd40drops.
Toreplacethelightbulbinthelocomotive,followtheboiler
removalinstructionsonpage7.(Part#CA-0000051)
Oncethelocomotiveboilerhasbeenremovedfromitschassis,
locatethebulbbracketasseenintheillustrationontherightand
rotatetheheadlightbulbcounter-clockwisetoremove.
Toreplacetheinteriorlightbulbsfollowtheseinstructionsandseethediagramsbelow:
