Safety Guidelines
To avoid potentially fatal shock hazard and possible damage to Raritan equipment:
•Do not use a 2-wire power cord in any product configuration.
•Test AC outlets at your computer and monitor for proper polarity and grounding.
•Use only with grounded outlets at both the computer and monitor. When using a backup UPS,
power the computer, monitor and appliance off the supply.
Rack Mount Safety Guidelines
In Raritan products which require Rack Mounting, please follow these precautions:
•Operation temperature in a closed rack environment may be greater than room temperature. Do
not exceed the rated maximum ambient temperature of the appliances (see the specifications
section of each device’s User Guide).
•Ensure sufficient airflow through the rack environment.
•Mount equipment in the rack carefully to avoid uneven mechanical loading.
•Connect equipment to the supply circuit carefully to avoid overloading circuits.
•Ground all equipment properly, especially supply connections, such as power strips (other than
direct connections), to the branch circuit.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1
Chapter 1: Introduction
PCCI Overview
Paragon II and CommandCenter Integration comprises two core products, Raritan’s Paragon II
and Raritan’s CommandCenter Secure Gateway. In the configuration shown below, the shaded
area represents a sample Paragon II System. This configuration would allow users to log in
remotely to CommandCenter Secure Gateway and provide access to all servers (targets) in the
Paragon II System; users with Administrative privileges can access all network appliances in the
Paragon II System (after the Paragon II System and CommandCenter Secure Gateway have been
successfully integrated).

The following components make up a PCCI system configuration. Please note that the item
number reflects the figure on the previous page.
1. Paragon II Main Units (also known as Paragon II Main Switching Units) perform matrix
switching, and connect to targets. In the illustration, the unit is a model P2-UMT 1664.
Important: The line speed and duplex mode of Paragon II Main Units is 10Mbps
at half duplex. If your network components do not have an auto detect feature,
they must be set to 10Mbps half duplex.
2. Paragon II Stacking (S) Units (optional) are paired or stacked to a Main Unit and extend the
number of targets that can be connected. In the illustration, the P2-UMT-1664S is the stacked
unit for the P2-UMT-1664. Main and Stacking Units are linked via a SCSI connection; for
the 1664 model, there are two SCSI cable connections. Stacked, these two Paragon switches
can support a total of 128 targets. Each P2-UMT 1664 unit (main or stacking) has 64 channel
ports, which accept RJ45 connectors.
3. Paragon II Computer Interface Modules (CIMs) are cable connectors that connect
Paragon II units (both main and stacking) to targets, connecting to the channel port using a
Cat 5e UTP cable. The Cat 5e cable has RJ45 connectors on each end.

4. Paragon II USTs / EUSTs (user station modules or enhanced user station modules)
provide a direct connection to a Paragon II Main Unit for access to the Main Unit itself and
its targets. The connection is made from the user station’s “Cat5 Port” to the “User Ports” on
the back panel of the Main Unit. This connection is made using a Cat 5e UTP cable with
RJ45 connectors. These two particular user stations function as part of the path for remote
access via the IP-Reach model M2.
5. An additional Paragon II UST or EUST allows for local access to the Paragon switch (or
switches) and targets, as described above, and then keyboard, monitor, mouse cables are
connected to PS/2 ports on the rear panel of the UST for use. Authorization and
authentication occur locally since this user station is not controlled by the CommandCenter
Secure Gateway.
6. IP-Reach (models M1, M2, and TR 364) provide remote access to targets. Authorization
and authentication occur at CommandCenter Secure Gateway since the IP-Reach is providing
remote access to the Base Unit.
6a. UST-IP (models USTIP1 and USTIP2) combine the functionality of an IP-Reach M series
(6) and one or two USTs (4), providing remote and local access to Paragon systems in a
single device. In a Paragon II CommandCenter integration setup, a USTIP unit can be used in
place of separate IP-Reach and UST devices.
7. Paragon II System Controller has software that enables it to configure and administer
targets and devices in the Paragon II system. The Paragon II System Controller can
administer up to eight base Paragon switches. The IP-Reach, USTs, and Paragon switches in
the illustration could theoretically be duplicated seven times, and still be administered by a
single Paragon II System Controller, offering a maximum of 1024 targets. Please see
Appendix B: Sample Configurations for additional information. In order for the Paragon II
System Controller to configure and/or administer all Base M units, and IP-Reach units, all
components must be on the same subnet.
8. CommandCenter Secure Gateway provides centralized management, administration,
authentication and authorization for the Paragon II system.
If you are deploying any of these components for the first time, you will find installation and
initial configuration instructions in the appropriate chapters below.
Supported Browsers and Java Runtime Environment
To access CommandCenter Secure Gateway and the network appliances within its control, your
PC must have the correct Java Runtime Environment and must use one of supported browsers.
For a complete list of supported browsers, see the Compatibility Matrix on the Raritan website
(www.raritan.com).
Important: Depending on the version of your CommandCenter Secure Gateway,
the required Java Runtime Environment version and supported browsers may
be slightly different. Refer to the Compatibility Matrix specific to your version
for details.
A warning message appears if you are using an unsupported Java Runtime Environment version
on your machine. Follow the prompts to either download a supported Java version, or continue
with the currently installed version. Browser settings can remain at their defaults, but you should
disable Popup Blocking temporarily to allow the initial CommandCenter Secure Gateway login
screen to be displayed.

Chapter 2: Upgrading an Existing Paragon II -
CommandCenter Integration Setup
If you currently deploy a PCCI solution, you will need to upgrade all Paragon switches, Base Tier
(first tier) USTs, IP-Reach Units, UST-IPs and P2SC System Controllers in the configuration in
order to bring the configuration up to the current release. These components must be upgraded in
this general order:
•Update your CommandCenter Secure Gateway
•Update your Paragon II System Controller
•Update your UST-IP Remote User Stations and IP-Reach devices
•Update your UST User Stations
•Update your Paragon II switches.
Note for compatibility reasons, Raritan requires upgrading ALL UST User Stations in a PCCI
setup (including those attached to second- and third-tier Paragon switches to provide local
access).
Updating the CommandCenter Secure Gateway
To update your Paragon II – CommandCenter Integration system, you must first upgrade your
CommandCenter Secure Gateway with the latest CC-SG firmware.
Important: If you are moving from CommandCenter Secure Gateway version
2.x to 3.0 or later, please read the release specific instructions on the CC-SG
System Migration Guide (for moving to a V1 platform) or the CC-SG Upgrade
Guide (for updating your G1 platform).
1. Launch CommandCenter Secure Gateway.
2. (CommandCenter 3.0 or later only) From the System Maintenance menu, click
Maintenance Mode, then Enter Maintenance Mode to place your Secure Gateway in
maintenance mode.
3. On the System Maintenance menu, click Upgrade.
4. Click Browse and locate the file. The file must be accessible from your client PC. This
means that it must have been downloaded from the Raritan website.
5. Then click OK to upload the firmware file to CommandCenter Secure Gateway. A success
message appears, indicating that CommandCenter Secure Gateway has begun the upgrade
process. All users will be disconnected from CommandCenter Secure Gateway at this time.
6. After CommandCenter Secure Gateway has finished updating and rebooted, remove it from
maintenance mode by selecting the System Maintenance menu, then clicking Maintenance
Mode, then Exit Maintenance Mode.

Loading New Device Firmware onto CC-SG
Loading CommandCenter Secure Gateway’s Firmware Manager with firmware updates allows it
to update devices under its management. This includes the Paragon II, P2SC, UST-IP and IP-
Reach units in a PCCI setup.
Important: Check the Compatibility Matrix on the Raritan website to make
sure the new device firmware version is compatible with your CC-SG firmware
version. If you need to upgrade both CC-SG and a device or group of devices,
perform the CC-SG upgrade first, and then perform the device upgrade.
1. Download the latest device firmware file from Raritan website (http://www.raritan.com) to
your client PC.
2. Launch CommandCenter Secure Gateway. On the Administration menu,, click Firmware
Manager.The Firmware Manager screen appears.
3. Click Add to add a new firmware file. A search window appears.

4. Click on the Look In drop-down arrow and navigate to locate the firmware file in your
system. When you find the firmware, select it, and click Open. The firmware name will
appear in the Firmware Name field of the Firmware Manager.
5. Click Close to close the Firmware Manager screen.
Follow this process to upload the latest firmware for the Paragon II, Paragon II System Controller,
UST-IP and IP-Reach devices.
Updating the Paragon II System Controller
Once the device firmware is loaded into CommandCenter Secure Gateway, CC-SG can update
your Paragon II System Controller.
1. Click on the Devices tab and select a P2SC device from the Devices tree.
2. On the Devices menu, click Device Manager, and then click Upgrade Device.The Upgrade
Device screen appears.
3. Click on the Firmware Name drop-down arrow and select the appropriate firmware from the
list (Raritan or your reseller will provide this information).
4. Click OK to upgrade the device or Cancel to close the Upgrade Device screen.
5. If the firmware version of the device is not compatible with CC-SG, a message will alert you
and ask if you want to proceed. Click Yes to upgrade the device, or No to cancel the
operation.
6. A Restart message appears; click Yes to restart the device or No to close the window
without restarting.

7. A Device Upgraded Successfully message confirms that the device has been upgraded.
Note: The “Device Upgraded Successfully” message appears when the P2SC has finished the
upgrade process and rebooted. However, the P2SC will continue to be inaccessible for several
minutes as it rediscovers and catalogs Paragon II systems in its management. Larger
configurations will take longer rediscover, please wait several minutes before trying to access the
P2SC again.
Repeat steps 1 through 6 to upgrade any other Paragon II System Controllers in your setup.

Updating UST-IP and IP-Reach Devices
CommandCenter Secure Gateway can also update any UST-IP or IP-Reach devices in your PCCI
configuration. Note that as part of a PCCI setup, the associated P2SC is still selected from the
Device tree, not the UST-IP or IP-Reach devices themselves.
Exception: If CommandCenter Secure Gateway directly manages the IP-Reach devices, you can
select the IP-Reach devices themselves from the Device tree.
1. Click on the Devices tab and select the associated P2SC device from the Devices tree.
2. On the Devices menu, click Device Manager, and then click Remote User Station Admin.
3. CC-SG will display a list of IP-Reach and UST-IP units managed by P2SC. Make sure that
all IP-Reach and UST-IP units are listed before proceeding. If any are missing, wait a short
while then check again.
4. On the Devices menu, click Device Manager, and then click Upgrade Device.The Upgrade
Device screen appears.
5. Click on the Firmware Name drop-down arrow and select the appropriate firmware from the
list for your UST-IP or IP-Reach.
6. Click OK to upgrade the device or Cancel to close the Upgrade Device screen.
7. If the firmware version of the device is not compatible with CC-SG, a message will alert you
and ask if you want to proceed. Click Yes to upgrade the device, or No to cancel the
operation.
8. A Restart message appears; click Yes to restart the device or No to close the window without
restarting.
9. A Device Upgraded Successfully message confirms that all devices of that type have been
upgraded.
Note: The P2SC device will reboot along with the UST-IP or IP-Reach devices once the firmware
upgrade is complete. Again, the P2SC will take several minutes to rediscover and catalog
assigned Paragon II configurations. Larger configurations will take longer rediscover, please
wait several minutes before trying to access the P2SC again.
This will upgrade all UST-IP or IP-Reach devices (depending on which firmware) at once. If you
use a mixture of UST-IP or IP-Reach units, repeat steps 1 through 6 to upgrade the other set of
devices.

Updating Paragon II
To upgrade a Paragon II system under management, follow the steps below. If your Paragon II
system consists of only a single tier, proceed from Upgrading the Base-Tier Paragon switches
section below.
1. Start with the Paragon switches in the highest tier only (e.g. in a three-tiered Paragon II setup,
power on the third tier only).

2. If your Paragon II setup has any Stacking Units in this tier, remove the Stacking Units from
management first. To do this:
-Press the FUNC button on the front panel of the associated Main Unit.
-Use the Sand Tbuttons to scroll through the menu until the Stacking Support item
appears, then press the ENT button.
-Use the Sbutton to set the Unit(s) value to 0, then press the ENT button.
3. Check the Firmware Loader (boot loader) of each unit in the tier by first pressing the FUNC
button, then the ENT button on the front panel of each Paragon II unit. If the display does not
show “F/W Loader:” press the Tbutton to cycle through the displays until it does.

4. If the value of the of F/W Loader: item is not 0C4 or later, note that this Paragon switch will
have to be upgraded with a new boot loader before the main firmware upgrade.

5. Launch the Paragon Update application that came bundled with the Paragon switch firmware.

If you need to upgrade the Firmware Loader on any Paragon II switches in this tier:
6. Click New to add a new entry in the list.
7. Click on the IP address/Serial column for that entry, and enter the IP address of a Paragon
switch in the tier that needs to update the Firmware Loader.
8. Click on the Port column for that entry, enter the IP Port being used by that Paragon switch
(the default port is 3000).
9. Repeat steps 6-8 for each Paragon switch in the system being upgraded with the new
Firmware Loader.
10. Check the checkbox in the far left column for each Paragon switch in the system being
upgraded with the new Firmware Loader.
11. Click Load Hex File to bring up the Open window.
12. Find the firmware loader upgrade package in the Open window and click Open to select it.
13. Click Send To Paragon to update the Firmware Loader of the selected Paragon switches.
Important: Only upgrade the firmware loader of those Paragon switches with
firmware loader versions earlier than 0C4.
14. If you removed any Stacking Units from management in step 2, add them back at this time.
To do this:
-Press the FUNC button on the front panel of the associated Main Unit.
-Use the Sand Tbuttons to scroll through the menu until the Stacking Support item
appears, then press the ENT button.
-Use the Tbutton to set the Unit(s) value to back to its original value, then press the
ENT button.
After all Paragon Paragon switches in this tier are confirmed running firmware loader 0C4 or
later:
15. Follow steps 6-8 above to add ALL Paragon switches in this tier to the list.
16. Check the checkbox in the far left column for each Paragon switch in the system being
upgraded.
17. Click Load Hex File to bring up the Open window.

18. Find the firmware upgrade package in the Open window and click Open to select it.
19. Click Send To Paragon to update the firmware of the selected Paragon switches.
20. If your setup has three tiers, after all the Paragon II switches in the third tier are done
rebooting, power on all Paragon switches in the second tier and repeat steps 2-19 until all the
Paragon switches in the second tier have been upgraded.
Upgrading the Base-Tier Paragon switches
21. To upgrade the base tier (first tier), first check the Firmware Loader version of the base-tier
devices following step 3 above. If the base-tier units do not have Firmware Loader version
0C4 or later, you will need to follow the set of instructions under the Upgrading Base-Tier
Paragon switches With Old Firmware Loaders below.
22. If the base-tier units are running Firmware Loader 0C4 or later, return to CommandCenter
Secure Gateway, click on the Devices tab and select the associated P2SC device from the
Devices tree.
23. On the Devices menu, click Device Manager, and then click Upgrade Device.The Upgrade
Device screen appears.
24. Click on the Firmware Name drop-down arrow and select the appropriate firmware from the
list for Paragon II.
25. Click OK to upgrade the device or Cancel to close the Upgrade Device screen.
Performing a Partial Reset
26. When all the Paragon switches have been successfully upgraded, you will need to perform a
partial reset. Connect a keyboard and monitor to a User Station attached to a base-tier
Paragon switch.
27. Login to the Paragon II system as the user admin.
28. Press <F5> to bring up the Administration Menu.
29. Select System Reset Settings from the Administration Menu and press <Enter>
30. Select Channel Configuration from the System/Device Reset menu and press <Enter>
31. Use the arrow keys to change the selection value to Yes, then press <Enter>.
32. Type O for OK.
33. When prompted to confirm, type yes (the complete word) and then press <Enter> to perform
a partial reset through the Paragon II system or press <Esc> to cancel the reset.
Note: If you are using a Multi-base Paragon II Setup, you will need to perform this partial reset
from each base-tier Paragon switch.
Note: Depending on the size of your Paragon II configuration, It may take several minutes to
synchronize the database after performing a partial reset. Please wait for this to complete. To
verify the completion of the update, bring up the Channel Selection Menu sorted by name. A
message will flash continuously at the bottom of the display if channel synchronization is still
occurring.
If you are performing a base-tier upgrade through CommandCenter Secure Gateway, the Paragon
II upgrade process is complete after performing the partial reset. If you are performing a base-tier
upgrade through Paragon Update, return to step 41 below.

Upgrading Base-Tier Paragon switches With Old Firmware Loaders
If your base-tier Paragon switches need to upgrade their firmware loader, you will need to remove
the Paragon II system from P2SC management first.
34. Select the associated P2SC from the Device tree in CommandCenter Secure Gateway.
35. On the Devices menu, click Device Manager, and then click Launch Admin..

36. After P2SC Admin launches, right click again on the P2SC in CommandCenter Secure
Gateway and select Pause Management.
Important: If you do not pause management of your P2SC before proceeding
further, you will lose any port configurations you have set up through
CommandCenter Secure Gateway.
