Introduction
This manual contains detailed instructions and notes on the operation and use of this machine. For your safety and benefit,
read this manual carefully before using the machine. Keep this manual in a handy place for quick reference.
Please read “Safety Information” in this manual before using this machine. It contains important information related to
USER SAFETY and PREVENTING EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS.
Power Source
220 - 240V, 50/60Hz, 4.5A or more
Please be sure to connect the power cable to a power source as shown above.
Two kinds of size notation are employed in this manual. With this machine refer to the metric version.
Operator Safety:
This machine is considered a class 1 laser device, safe for office/EDP use. The machine contains 5 milliwatt, 760 - 800
nanometer wavelength, AlGaAs Laser Diode. Direct (or indirect reflected) eye contact with the laser beam might cause
serious eye damage. Safety precautions and interlock mechanisms have been designed to prevent any possible laser
beam exposure to the operator.
The following label is attached behind the front cover, left side, front facing.
Laser Safety:
The optical housing unit can only be repaired in a factory or at a location with the requisite equipment.
The laser subsystem is replaceable in the field by a qualified customer engineer. The laser chassis is not repairable in the field.
Customer engineers are therefore directed to return all chassis and laser subsystems to the factory or service depot when
replacement of the optical subsystem is required.

Safety Information
When using your printer, the following safety precautions should always be followed.
Safety During Operation
In this manual, the following important symbols are used:
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if instructions are not followed, could result in death
or serious injury.

moderate injury or damage to property.
Safety Precautions to Be Followed
This section explains safety precautions that should always be followed when using this printer.
• Do not use extension cords. Doing so could result in fire or electric shock.
• Do not remove any covers or screws other than those explicitly mentioned in this manual. Inside
this machine are high voltage components that are an electric shock hazard and laser components
that could cause blindness. Contact your sales or service representative if any of the machine's
internal components require maintenance, adjustment, or repair.
• Do not attempt to disassemble or modify this machine. Doing so risks burns and electric shock.
Note again that exposure to the laser components inside this machine risks blindness.
• If the machine topples, or if a cover or other part gets broken, you must turn the power switch to
off and disconnect the power cord plug from the wall outlet. Then contact your service
representative and report the problem. Do not use the machine. Doing so could result in fire or
electric shock.

• If metal objects, or water or other fluids fall inside this machine, you must turn off its power
immediately. After turning off the power, be sure to disconnect the power cord plug from the wall
outlet. Then contact your service representative and report the problem. Do not use the machine.
Doing so could result in fire or electric shock.
• Do not incinerate toner (new or used) or toner containers. Doing so risks burns. Toner will ignite
on contact with naked flame.
• Be sure to locate the machine as close as possible to a wall outlet. This will allow easy disconnection
of the power cord in the event of an emergency.
• Do not use any power sources other than those that match the specifications shown in this manual.
Doing so could result in fire or electric shock.
• Do not use multi-socket adaptors. Doing so could result in fire or electric shock.
• Do not use power cords that are damaged, broken, or modified. Also, do not use power cords
that have been trapped under heavy objects, pulled hard, or bent severely. Doing so could result
in fire or electric shock.
• It is dangerous to handle the power cord plug with wet hands. Doing so could result in electric
shock.
• The inside of the machine could be very hot. Do not touch the parts with a label indicating the
"hot surface." Otherwise, an injury might occur.
• Disconnect the power plug (by pulling the plug, not the cable) if the power cable or plug becomes
frayed or otherwise damaged.

• Disposal can take place at our authorized dealer.
• Dispose of the used toner cartridge in accordance with the local regulations.
• Keep the machine away from humidity and dust. Otherwise a fire or an electric shock might occur.
• Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet before you move the machine. While moving the
machine, take care that the power cord is not damaged under the machine. Failing to take these
precautions could result in fire or electric shock.
• When disconnecting the power cord from the wall outlet, always pull the plug, not the cord. Pulling
the cord can damage the power cord. Use of damaged power cords could result in fire or electric
shock.
• Store toner (new or used), toner containers, and components that have been in contact with toner
out of reach of children.
• Do not place the machine on an unstable or tilted surface. If it topples over, an injury might occur.
• Make sure the room where you are using the machine is well ventilated and spacious. Good
ventilation is especially important when the machine is used heavily.
• If toner or used toner is swallowed, dilute by drinking a large amount of water. Consult a doctor
if necessary.
• Do not allow paper clips, staples, or other small metallic objects to fall inside the machine.

• For environmental reasons, do not dispose of the machine or expended supply waste at
household waste collection points. Disposal can take place at an authorized dealer.
• Our products are engineered to meet high standards of quality and functionality, and we
recommend that you use only the expendable supplies available at an authorized dealer.

Energy Saving Function
Energy Saver mode
This printer automatically lowers its power consumption 1 minute after the last operation has been
completed. To exit Energy Saver mode, press any key on the control panel. To change the setting of
the Energy Saver mode, see "System Menu" in the Printer Reference on the CD-ROM.

Printer Driver for This Printer
Printing requires installation of a printer driver for your operating system. The PCL 6 driver is included on
the CD-ROM that comes with this printer.
PCL printer drivers
This printer driver allows the computer to communicate with the printer via a printer language.

Viewing the Contents of the CD-ROM
1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
Auto Run will start the installer.
2. Select a language, and then click [OK].
3. Click [Browse This CD-ROM].
Explorer starts and displays the contents of the CD-ROM.

1. Paper Size Dial
Adjust this dial to match the size and feed direction of the paper loaded in the paper tray.
2. Bypass Tray Extension
Pull out this extension to load paper into the Bypass Tray when its length is longer than A4 or 81/2"
11" .
3. Bypass Tray
Use to print onto thick paper, OHP transparencies, adhesive labels, custom size paper, envelopes as well
as plain paper. When printing on custom paper size, printer driver settings are required.
Up to 100 sheets of plain paper (80 g/m2, 20 lb.bond) can be loaded. See "Paper and Other Media
Supported by this Printer" and "Loading Paper in the Bypass Tray" in the Printer Reference on the CD-ROM.
4. Output Tray Extension
Pull out this extension when printing on long paper.
5. Control Panel
Contains keys for the printer operation and a panel display that shows the printer status.

6. Output Tray (Standard Tray)
Printed output is stacked here with the print side facing down.

Open this cover to remove misfed paper.
9. Ventilator
This hole helps to keep components inside the printer from overheating.
• Do not block or obstruct the ventilator. A malfunction may occur due to overheating.
10. Front Cover Release Button
Use this button to open the front cover.
11. Power Switch
Use this switch to turn the printer power on and off.
12. Paper Tray (Tray 1)
Loads up to 500 sheets of plain paper (80 g/m2, 20 lb.bond) into this tray for printing. See "Paper and
Other Media Supported by this Printer" in the Printer Reference on the CD-ROM.
• Paper Tray is displayed “Tray 1” on the panel display.
13. Friction Pad
This is required to feed in paper one sheet at a time. Clean the friction pad when more than one sheet of
paper is fed into the printer. Also, replace the friction pad when the message, "Replace Maintenance Kit",
appears.
14. Paper Tray Cover
Attach it when pulling out the tray extension of the paper tray.
15. Power Cord
Plug this cord into a wall outlet.
16. Rear Cover
Remove to install the optional Duplex Unit or to replace the Fusing Unit.
17. Ventilators
These holes help to keep components inside the printer from overheating.
• Do not block or obstruct the ventilators. A malfunction may occur due to overheating.

Attach the interface cable.
