4. Setting Up and Connection
Setting Up
Use the PNC-1610 while installed on the special stand that is sold separately. If you do not have this stand, use the PNC-1610
while installed on a level and stable base. For assembly and installation of the special stand sold separately, refer to the
assembling the DPS-470 that comes with the stand, or the instructions in "- Using the Stand" given below. Assembly and
installation should always be carried out by two or more persons.
Using the Stand Contents
The items listed below are packaged together with the stand. Before using, be sure to check that all items have been
included. The part numbers below correspond to the numbers shown in the assembly and installation diagram at the next
page.
Assembling the stand
Assemble as shown at right, matching the parts with the part
numbers given in the tables to the upper right.
After tightening the eight button cap screws(9) by hand, use
the hexagonal wrench(11) to tighten fully.

Assembling the stand and mounting the cutting machine on it must be done by two persons.

Connection
Mounting the cutting machine to the stand
Assemble the parts in the sequence in which they are numbered in the list
of included items, then install the PNC-1610. To prevent the PNC-1610
from slipping or falling off the stand, be sure to install the cap screws
(10) and washers (12) securely. When changing the installation angle, be
sure to first switch off the power to the PNC-1610. After assembly and
installation are complete, tighten the knob bolts (6) securely.
The two enlarged areas in the figure at right show the left-hand side of the
stand. When working on the right-hand side of the stand, be sure to insert
the pins (7) from the opposite direction of what is shown in these draw-
ings.
Use care to avoid pinching the fingers when placing the unit on the stand.
- Always use a power supply with ±10% of the rated voltage.
- Be sure that the power is switched off when making connections.
- Check that the power supply cord and transmission input cable from the computer are firmly connected and will not
come loose during use resulting in a poor connection.

Parallel connection
Use the parallel interface cable to connect the parallel connector on the left side of the device with the printer connector on the
host computer. Secure the connectors in place with the lock pins on each end.
Serial connection
Use the serial interface cable to connect the serial connector on the left side of the device with the RS-232C connector on the
host computer. Secure the connectors in place with the screws provided on each end.
After its power has been switched on, the device can automatically determine and store in memory the type of interface used
(and also the communication parameters, if a serial connection is used) according to the data that is downloaded from the
computer. This means that there is no need to make these settings on this product for the type of interface (or for the
communication parameters, if a serial connection is used).
Ifyouwanttochangethetypeofinterfacebeingused,youmustfirstturnoffthepowertothecomputerandthedevice,change
the cable connections, and then again switch on the power to the computer and the device. (Reconnection of the cables is not
required when changing the settings for communication conditions only)

5. Material Set-up Example
An example of material set-up is given below. Make your settings in accordance with the type of material you are using.
Use the included CP-A3
- Do not use the CP-A3 if you are planning to cut clean through the material. If you cut right through to the CP-
A3, you will no longer be able to use it.
- The peel-off sheets are used to protect the CP-A3 after use. Do not throw them away.
2. Remove the peel-off sheet from the face of the CP-A3, and attach your material to the surface of the CP-A3.
1. Peel off the backing sheet from the CP-A3, and attach it to the cutting table.

If you are trying to secure large material, use two sheets of CP-A3 or whatever it takes to get the job done.
One CP-A3 can be used about 100 times. Replace it once it loses its grip (stickiness).
Using commercial double-sided tape
- Refrain from using double-sided tape that can cause damage to your material (peel off bits of material, put holes
in it , etc.).
- Make sure the sections to which you have not attached tape do not stick up from the cutting table.
Attach double-sided tape to the bottom of your material, and secure it as is to the cutting table.

Using commercial spray glue
Do not spray the spray paste directly onto the cutting table. Glue will become stuck inside the unit and this can be
the cause of damage to the unit.
Spray the back of your material with paste and secure it directly to the cutting table.

Load a thick material
- Donotloadanything witha totalweight of20 kg(44.1 lb.)or more. Doingso maycause thecutting tableto warp
and make normal cutting impossible.
- Move the Y Rail to the left or right edge.
- If a blade holder is installed, remove it.
The above are examples of attaching material to the cutting table. In addition, you can use other methods of attaching your
material in order to meet your needs. However, if you employ your own method, be sure to strictly protect the following:
- Be sure to firmly secure your material to the cutting table. If the edges, etc., stick up, they can get caught in the
Y-rail, creating an extremely dangerous condition.
- Do not attach your material using tacks, push-pins, or other items that can damage the cutting table.
- Themaximumallowablethicknessformaterialtobeattachedis16mm(5/8") .Donotattachmaterialofthickness
greater than 16mm(5/8") .
There is a mat already spread over the cutting table for protection. Therefore, even if you experience slight cutting scratches
and marks on the mat, it will not damage the cutting table and will not effect operation of the device. Also, the mat can be
replaced. If damage to the mat reaches the extent that it begins to effect cutting operations, please contact or dealer or our local
sales office. The mat will be exchanged for a set fee.

When removing (or changing) the current blade, press the key on the control panel to
stop the tool carriage, and then check to make sure the carriage has come to a complete halt
before proceeding.
Depending on the type, the blade may be fitted with a ring to prevent fall-out. If the blade is provided with such as ring, use
procedure B to install the blade.
Reattach the tip of the blade holder that you re-
moved in the first step ("Installing a Blade 1").

blade holder does not move.

performing a cut. Also note that the first time you use this
product, the LL is set to the bottom left corner of the cutting
table, and the UR is set to the upper right corner of the cutting
table.

1. After setting a material in place, turn on the power.
Press the key to display the sheet size setting screen.
2. Use the , , , , and keys to move the tool carriage to the
lower-leftofthematerial. Thecoordinatevalue (X,Y)willchangetoreflect
movement of the tool carriage.
3. Hold down the key and press key. The message [Set LL
Completed] is displayed, and the setting for LL is made.

The setting for cutting area has now been made. No cutting will be performed outside the area defined by the values of LL
and UR.
Tocontinueusingacuttingareaofthesameorientationandsize,setonlyLL. ThepositionofURwillautomaticallybemoved
correspondingly and set.
The orientation values are written to memory and the coordinate values for LL and UR will not change unless newly set. If
the key or key is pressed within the Sheet Size Menu, the tool carriage will move in response to the LL and UR
entered at that time.
Thisis just acommentabout orientation settings andterminology. When LL and URhave been set asupper-
left and the lower-right respectively, the X axis switches to a vertical (up-down) orientation and the Y axis
switches to a horizontal (left-right) orientation. Under such conditions, previously set text is rotated 90 °
clock-wise from the normal orientation.

In order to carry out cutting optimally, it is necessary to set cutting conditions that match the material, giving consideration
to the material's thickness and type of material. The unit can perform a cutting test to check the cutting conditions. Please
set cutting conditions that are appropriate for the type of material being used.
8. Setting Cutting Conditions
Performing a Cutting Test
Ifyoubeginthe cuttingtestimmediatelyafterturningonthepower,thetoolcarriage willmoveacrossthe
cuttingtablefromtheupperrightcornertothepresetlower-left(LL).Besurethereisnothingonthecutting
table other than your material.

Checking Cutting Force and Tool Speed
Confirm the cutting pressure and speed of the tool carriage. Peel off the round section (marked by ). When cutting
sign sheets, etc., confirm that you can peel off the square section (marked by ), but do not remove it. When cutting
rightthroughthematerial,confirmthatyoucanremovethematerialwithouteffectingtheareaandthecircle.Whencutting
signsheets, also remove the square section (marked by ). If the blade leaves a slight trailonthe base paper, you have
achieved optimum tool pressure and speed.

4. Press the key after one of the above three displays appears. The pattern shown in the diagram below will be cut
beginning where the tool carriage is positioned when the test is started. This requires an area of approximately 4 cm2

Checking the Offset Value
Setting Cutting Conditions
The chart below describes symptoms that occur when cutting conditions are not optimal. Use this chart for
comparison with the results of the cutting test.

1. If the material was not cut correctly in the cutting test, new cutting conditions should be set.
Press the key. The following single display will appear.
The remaining cross-shaped area is used to check whether the offset value is set correctly. When the offset value
has been correctly set, the corners of the figure should appear cleanly cut as shown in A of the figure below. If the
offset value is too small, the corners will appear slightly rounded as illustrated by B; an offset value which is too
large will result in a cut figure similar to C. (When using relatively thick material, the shape of cut may vary for
the front and back surface of the material. If this is the case, use the cutting result of the front surface to judge the
cut.)

2. To modify cutting conditions, choose each of the appropriate keys for settings . Inspect the result of the cut test and
adjust your cutting conditions as required. Regardless of the particular condition being modified, pressing the
key lowers the numerical value and pressing the key increased the value. When the you are satisfied with the
chosen values, press the key to set.
3. Whenever the cutting conditions have been modified, it is recommended that you once again perform a cut test to
confirmcorrect positioning and orientation.Pressing the key any timethe above three displays appearstarts the
cutting test immediately.
