Currently applicable regulations
● Rüegg fireplace inserts are approved in accordance with European standard
DIN EN13229.
● These instructions are based on the "Document of generally accepted prac-
tices " of the VHP, version 1.1 and on German regulations.
● Fireplace installation must be in conformity with national and local regulations.
When installing a RÜEGG fireplace, in addition to the instructions contained
herein, you must ensure that the installation is in conformity with currently
applicable laws and regulations in your country. These include, for example:
- Building safety regulations, professional regulations and fire regula-
tions
- Laws and regulations relating to emissions
- Air purity laws and regulations
- Regulations and guidelines relating to fireplace fitters
- Laws and regulations regarding fire precautions (chimney sweep)
- Laws and regulations regarding fire insurance
● It is the fitter's responsibility to ensure conformity with the laws and regulations
in force in the country in question.
● Fireplaces should only be installed by qualified fitters.
Before installation
● Check immediately that there are no parts missing from the fireplace and that
it has not suffered any damage in transit. Check also that the dimensions are
correct, that the door opens without undue noise and that the fireplace pre-
sents no defect.
● Check before installation that the fireplace glass door
functions correctly. Remove the security screws from
the counterweight and remove any other transport
safety elements. Any defects, such as operating diffi-
culties or excessive noise, must be reported to your
dealer before starting the installation.
● Read the installation instructions carefully.
● Remove all the documents and accessories from the fireplace and give the
instruction manual to the end-user.

General points
Location
Open hearth fireplaces must not be installed:
- in stairways, except in residential buildings with no more than two apart-
ments
- in shared corridors
- in rooms where inflammable or explosive products are used, stored or
manufactured
- in rooms or apartments where air is removed on a continuous basis by a
fan system. This requirement does not apply to rooms where air is re-
moved by ventilation systems fitted with safety appliances which safely
prevent the formation of a depression in the room in which the fireplace is
installed or which do not allow the formation of a depression under 0.04
mbar. These requirements do not apply to rooms fitted with ventilation
systems for the installation of heating systems sealed against ambient air.
Combustion air intake
Open hearth fireplaces can be installed in rooms which do not have external
combustion air intake flues, provided:
- they have at least one door opening to the outside, or a window that can
be opened, or they are directly or indirectly connected to other rooms
which can provide combustion air intake. If the fireplace is installed in an
apartment or similar, the combustion air intake must be connected only to
the room in question or to those rooms belonging to the apartment. Fire-
places can only be installed in the afore mentioned locations if they have
a combustion air intake of at least 360 m³ per hour per m² of hearth open-
ing. These requirements do not apply to fireplaces that can be operated
independently or separately from ambient air.
Open-hearth fireplaces can be installed in rooms with direct external combustion
air intake, provided:
- An external air flue corresponding to the fireplace insert is connected to
the exterior from the room in question. The flue must be fitted with an
hermetically-closing regulator in the room in which the fireplace is in-
stalled. The regulator position must be clearly visible.
- External air flues are manufactured and installed in conformity with na-
tional construction regulations, so that in apartment buildings of more
than two floors, they fit over the firewalls so as to prevent the spread of
fire or smoke to other floors or rooms.

A1/B1 fireplaces
A1 and B1 fireplaces are fitted with an automatically closing door, certified and
tested in conformity with European standard DIN EN 13229 - A1. Open hearth
operation is forbidden, nor can these fireplaces be converted for open hearth
operation. The fireplace insert can be connected to a chimney flue for multiple
use. The effective height of the chimney flue must be at least 4 m, from the flue
gas intake. European standard DIN 4705/EN 13384-1 applies for the dimensions
of the chimney flue for the installation of a fireplace insert. Calculations for type AI
fireplace inserts are based on the volume of combustion air when the fireplace is
operating with its door closed. Type AI fireplace inserts meet the following re-
quirements:
● Automatically closing door
● Efficiency > 70 %
● Nominal heating capacity < 11 kW
A2/B2 fireplaces
A2 and B2 fireplace inserts can also operate under open hearth conditions. It is
forbidden for the chimney flues to have multiple connections. The fireplace insert
must be connected to its own chimney flue, in other words only one heating unit
can be installed per chimney flue.
NOTICE
You should enquire as to whether multiple connections are legal in
your country.

Air-flow management
Operating modes and systems
● Rüegg fireplace inserts are designed so that the combustion air can be
drawn to the fireplace separately from the ambient air, for closed-door opera-
tion. The combustion air is taken from outside the room in which the fireplace
is installed and is channelled directly to the fireplace where it is drawn into the
fire. The system is called AIR-Direct (= separate from ambient air)
● The second system for drawing air into the fireplace is the convection air
system, which is used mainly for heating the ambient air. Fireplaces in which
the convection air is guided by a convection jacket are called S fireplaces,
while those without the jacket are called K fireplaces. In this system, the con-
vection air is taken in through a cavity in the fireplace casing and comes out
into the room through vents in the fireplace apron.
● If the fireplace insert also needs to operate with the door open, the convection
air system must be connected to an external air source. This means that the
external air will be heated by the convection air system and drawn into the
room and will arrive in the fireplace as combustion air, going through the open
door.
WARNING
If an open fired appliance is only supplied with fresh air by the AIR
DIRECT system, and the room is characterized by an airtight con-
struction, a trouble free function cannot be guaranteed!
WARNING
Internal or external fans may never be attached to the combustion
air supply (AIR DRECT system) they are only used for advanced
convection air supply.
The diagrams below show a number of possible variations, with their correspond-
ing airflows.

S-Fireplaces
On S fireplaces without a base/fan
chamber, the openings for the com-
bustion air inlet sleeves (VL) and the
convection air inlet sleeves (KL) are
laser pre-cut in the housing.
Depending on your installation, the
blanking pieces can be removed on
the side or at the rear, and Ø150
mm air inlet sleeves fitted. You
should take into account the amount of
air required..
The convection air outlet sleeves
(KL) are factory fitted.

K-fireplaces
On K fireplaces without a base/ fan
chamber, the openings for the com-
bustion air inlet sleeves (VL) are la-
ser pre-cut on the housing. Depend-
ing on your installation, the blanking
pieces can be removed on the side
or at the rear, and Ø150 mm air inlet
sleeves fitted. You should take into
account the amount of air required.
As K fireplaces are not fitted with a
convection jacket, the convection air
will circulate within the casing
through the openings that you will
have made for this. Make sure that
the inner lining of the casing is dust
free and abrasion resistant.
For casings made of heat storage
and radiation materials, for which a
convection circuit is generally not fit-
ted, there must be a sufficient supply
of external air to the room in ques-
tion for open hearth operation. The
openings are therefore precut by la-
ser in the top of the glass panel pro-
tective housing. For casings made of
heat storage and radiation materials,
without convection, these openings
can be connected up, in line with air
requirements. The openings are fit-
ted with fresh-air connector units
with sleeves (article no. 12.59.0050),
to which a fresh air conduit of
Ø150 mm can be fitted.

Appliances on a socle
On appliances with a socle or venti-
latorbox there are only openings
precut for the ambient air inlet (KL)

The lids of not used openings may never be taken away!
For a trouble free open use of the fireplace, the room must be suffi-
ciently supplied with fresh air from outside. The only use of the com-
bustion air entry (VL) in this case is absolutely not sufficient.

For K fireplaces, the sections are the same as the V/S fireplaces (Ø150 mm =
175 cm²).
For A1 fireplaces with an automatically closing door (= solely in closed-door

WARNING
In V-appliances (with built in ventilator) the number of collars can be
reduced because of the forced higher air volume. The ambient air in-
takes must be mounted symmetrically on the fireplace to ensure the
air heats evenly ant that the installation will not overheat on one
side!

Fitting the sleeves
Tools: – Hammer
– Pozidriv PZ 3 screwdriver
– Silicon seal (thermal resistance ≥ 250 °C)
1. Use a hammer to break out the blanking piece
2. Remove the blanking pieces
3. Install the Ø150 mm air sleeves
4. Fit the sleeve tabs into the slots in the opening
5. Fold down all the tabs 90°
NOTICE
The sleeves must be firmly fitted without any play. The connection can
be sealed with silicon sealer of temperature resistance ≥ 250° C.

Fitting the fresh air units
Blanking pieces

blanking pieces and fit the
sleeves as in the instructions on
page 19. To avoid any damage,
you can use a wooden block
placed inside the unit

External air ducts
● Use, if possible, round air supply ducts with a smooth internal surface.
● The internal surface of air supply ducts made of mineral materials or masonry
should be abrasion resistant
● The air supply ducts must be directly connected at their base or laterally to the
fireplace.
● The air supply ducts must be insulated with a non-inflammable material 3 cm
thick.
● The end of the air supply duct must be fitted with a removable fine mesh grid,
to prevent animals entering.
● All the systems must have an adequate supply of fresh air, with the appropri-
ate ducts and opening diameters, otherwise the system will not operate prop
perly in open or closed door modes.
● If the fitter estimates that ducts of smaller diameter will satisfy combustion air
requirements, then any such installation is at his own risk and responsibility, as
the manufacturer cannot guarantee proper operation under these conditions.
● Do not place the end of the external air conduit next to
a chimney flue or air exhaust outlet. Avoid also draw-
ing external air from an area giving onto a road with
heavy traffic.
● Convection air ducts:
→ To prevent cold air ingress, thermal bridges or condensation,
hermetically closing valves should be fitted.
● Combustion air ducts:
→ To prevent cold air ingress, thermal bridges or condensation, non-
hermetically-closing valves should be fitted, and a free section of 10 cm2
should be kept, which corresponds to an opening of Ø 3 cm. This prevents
dangerous build-up of gases.
