General Description
TheSENSIT®InfraredEthaneDectector,referredtoas“IRED”,isdesignedtodetectthepresenceof
ethanegasinamethanegassample.TheIREDcandetect250partsperbillion(ppb)upto500ppm
ethane.TheIREDisusedtodetermineifmethanedetectedintherangeof50-2000ppmisofsimilar
make-uptothatofpipelinegas(whichcontainsethane)orisnaturallyoccurringmethanefromother
sourcessuchasorganicdecay.TheIREDisnotdesignedforhighconcentrationsordeterminingactual
ethanecontentfromwithinapipeline.
TheIREDsensesgasusingInfrared(IR)AbsorptionSpectroscopyincombinationwithanelectronic
narrowband-passlter.Thistechnologyutilizesaninfraredlightsourcewithanoutputthatischanged
when certain gases absorb the light output. The lter only allows specic light wavelengths to be
monitoredandmeasured.TheconcentrationofgasisproportionaltotheamountofspecicIRlight
absorbedandisdisplayedinPPBorPPM.
TheIREDhasalargedisplay indicatingbothsustainedandpeakreading concentrationsandother
instrumentfunctions.Aninternalpumpprovidesrapidsamplingintothedetectionchamber.Bluetooth
data transmission provides communication of real time and stored data. Optional GPS with Data
Loggingallowforfurtherrecordingoftime,dateandlocationdata.

readings.Duringameasurement,4consecutive10secondreadingsaretaken.Thedisplaywill
beupdatedwiththereadingevery10secondsuntilthe40secondperiodhaselapsed.The
nalreadingisindicatedwhenthe“RESULT”headingisdisplayed.Real-timereadingsareonthe
left.Peakreadingsareontheright.PressAbuttontoexitorCbuttontoprint.
i. Ifthemethaneconcentrationistoohighamessagewillbedisplayed(backgroundtoohigh),
indicatingtheneedtore-zeroandattemptmeasuringagain.
ii. Forhighreadingsmovetheprobeslightlyawayfromtheprevioussource.Foraccurate
resultsmethaneconcentrationsof50-2000ppmarerequired.
d. Ethaneconcentrationisindicatedonthedisplayshowing“RESULT”andthereading.The
informationisalsostoredinthe“MEASUREMENTLOG”forlaterdownloadand/orreview.
e. PressingtheAbutton“EXIT”willreturntothemainscreendisplaying”IRED”,“READYFOR
MEASUREMENT”.
3. PressingandholdingtheAbuttonwillactivatethestandbymodeorshutdownsequence.Thedisplaywill
show“SHUTDOWN”ontheleftsideand“STANDBY”ontheright.PresstheAbuttontoturnthe
instrumentoff.PresstheCbuttontoplaceintostandbymodetoreducebatteryconsumption.Thiswill

Ethane (C2H6) to Methane (CH4) Ratio
WiththeuseofaSensitIREDandPMDyoucanaccuratelyandefcientlydeterminethepercentage
ofethaneinamethanesamplebetween50-2400ppm.Therearetwomethodstoachievethedesired
resultswhichareoutlinedbelow.Thepicturebelowdepictsthetelescopicprobe(barholeprobemay
alsobeused)attachedtotheinletoftheIRED(withpumpon)andthePMD(withpumpoff)inlet
attachedtotheexhaustoftheIRED.Thisallowsbothdevicestoosimultaneouslyanalyzethesame
sample.

Method 1 - Procedure for IRED/PMD Paired Sample Analysis to
Simultaneously Analyze the Same Sample
1. WiththeprobeofchoiceattachedtotheinletofthePMD(PumpOn),searchforanacceptable
stablesamplesizerangingfrom50-2400ppmCH4.
2. DisconnecttheprobetubingfromthePMD(leavetheprobeinplace).TurnthePMDpumpoffand
attachthepairinghosetotheIREDexhaustandthePMDinlet.
3. StartthezeroingprocessontheIRED.Uponthecompletionofthezeroprocess,theIREDwill
beepanda120secondscountdowntimerwillbedisplayed.
4. Attachtheprobeofchoicethatisstillinplacefromstep2totheinletoftheIREDandpressthe
“B”buttontostartthetest.Thetestwilllast40seconds.
5. Duringthetest,monitorthePMDmethanereadings.Notethepeakmethanereadingduringthe
40secondtest.Thiswillberequiredtoestablisharatio.

Method 2 - Procedure IRED/PMD Independent Sample Analysis
1. WiththeprobeofchoiceattachedtotheinletofthePMD,searchforanacceptablestablesample
sizerangingfrom50-2400ppmCH4.
2. StartthezeroingprocessontheIRED.Uponthecompletionofthezeroprocess,theIREDwill
beepanda120secondcountdowntimerwillbedisplayed.
3. NotethemethanereadingonthePMD.Thiswillberequiredtoestablisharatio.Disconnectthe
probetubingfromthePMD(leavetheprobeinplace)andattachtheprobetotheinletofthe
IRED.Pressthe“B”buttonontheIREDtobeginthe40secondmeasurement.
4. Attheendofthetest,theIREDwilldisplay“RESULT”andbeep.Thepeakethanereadingwillbe
displayed.
