In the unlikely event of this equipment requiring repair
during the guarantee period, you will need to provide
proof of the date of purchase to the repairing company.
Please keep your invoice or receipt, which is supplied at
the time of purchase.
The mains lead of this product is fitted with a non-rewire-
able (moulded) plug incorporating a 3A fuse. Should the
fuse need to be replaced, a BSI or ASTA approved BS
1362 fuse marked or and of the same rating as
above, which is also indicated on the pin face of the plug
must be used.
Always refit the fuse cover after replacing the fuse. Never
use the plug without the fuse cover fitted.
In the unlikely event of the socket outlet in your home
not being compatible with the plug supplied, cut-off the
mains plug and fit an appropriate type.
DANGER:
The fuse from the cut-off plug should be removed and
the cut-off plug destroyed immediately and disposed of
in a safe manner.
Under no circumstances should the cut-off plug be in-
serted elsewhere into a 13A socket outlet as a serious
electric shock may occur.
To fit an appropriate plug to the mains lead, follow the
instructions below:
IMPORTANT:
The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance
with the following code:
Blue : Neutral
Brown : Live
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this
product may not correspond with the coloured markings
identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:
● The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to
the plug terminal which is marked N or coloured black.
● The wire which is coloured brown must be connected
to the plug terminal which is marked L or coloured red.
Ensure that neither the brown nor the blue wire is con-
nected to the earth terminal in your three pin plug.
Before replacing the plug cover, make sure that:
● If the new fitted plug contains a fuse, its value is the
same as that removed from the cut-off plug.
● The cord grip is clamped over the sheath of the mains
lead and not simply over the lead wires.

●When the ON/STAND-BY button is set at STAND-BY po-
sition, mains voltage is still present inside the unit.
When the ON/STAND-BY button is set at STAND-BY po-
sition and the clock is displayed, the unit may be brought
into operation by the timer mode or remote control.
Warning:
This unit contains no user serviceable parts. Never remove
covers unless qualified to do so. This unit contains danger-
ous voltages, always remove mains plug from the socket
before any service operation and when not in use for a long
period.
●Recording and playback of any material may require con-
sent, which SHARP is unable to give. Please refer partic-
ularly to the provisions of the Copyright Act 1956, the
Dramatic and Musical Performers Protection Act 1958, the
Performers Protection Acts 1963 and 1972 and to any
subsequent statutory enactments and orders.

PRECAUTIONS
■General
●‘;ease make sure that the unit is positioned in a well ven-
tilated area and that there is at least 10 cm (4") of free
space along the sides and back. There must also be a
minimum of 50 cm (19-11/16") of free space on the top
of the unit.
●Do not use oil, solvents, petrol, paint thinners or insecti-
cides on the unit.
●Do not expose the unit to moisture, to temperatures higher
than 60˚C (140˚F) or to extreme low temperatures.
●Keep the unit away from direct sunlight, strong magnetic
fields, excessive dust, humidity and electronic/electrical
equipment (home computers, facsimiles, etc.) which gen-
erates electrical noise.
●Hold the AC power plug by the head when removing it
from the AC socket, since pulling the lead can damage
internal wires.
●When cleaning the heads, pinch rollers, etc, remove the
AC power plug from the AC socket as the unit contains
high voltages.
Do not remove the outer cover, as this may result in elec-
tric shock. Refer internal service to your local SHARP ser-
vice facility.
●Use the unit on a firm, level surface free from vibration,
and do not place anything on the top of the unit.
●If the unit does not work properly whilst in use, disconnect
the AC power lead from the AC socket. Plug the AC power
lead back in, and then press the POWER button to turn
the power on.
●If an electrical storm is taking place near you, it is sug-
gested that you disconnect the AC power lead from the
AC socket for safety.
Warning:
The voltage used must be the same as that specified on
this unit. Using this product with a higher voltage other than
which is specified is dangerous and may result in a fire or
other type of accident causing damage. SHARP will not be
held responsible for any damage resulting from use of this
unit with a voltage other than that which is specified.
■Volume control
The sound level at a given volume setting depends on a
combination of speaker efficiency, location and various other
factors.
It is advisable to avoid exposure to high volume levels, which
occur whilst turning the unit on with the volume control set-
ting up high, or whilst continually listening at high volumes.
■Condensation
Sudden temperature changes, storage or operation in an
extremely humid environment may cause condensation in-
side the cabinet (CD pickup, tape heads, etc.) or on the
transmitter LED on the remote control.
Condensation can cause the unit to malfunction.
If this happens, leave the power on with no disc (or cassette)
in the unit until normal playback is possible (about 1 hour).
Wipe off any condensation on the transmitter LED with a
soft cloth before operating the unit.
■Care of compact discs
Compact discs are fairly resistant to damage, however
mistracking can occur due to an accumulation of dirt on the
disc surface.
Follow the guidelines below for maximum enjoyment from
your CD collection and player.
●Do not write on either side of the disc, particularly the non-label
side. Signals are read from the non-label side. Do not mark
this surface.
●Keep your discs away from direct sunlight, heat, and excessive
moisture.
●Always hold the CDs by the edges. Fingerprints, dirt, or water
on the CDs can cause noise or mistracking. If a CD is dirty
or does not play properly, clean it with a soft, dry cloth, wiping
straight out from the centre, along the radius.
■Cassette tape
●This deck features an auto tape selector. Just load a tape,
and the tape formula being used will be sensed automat-
ically.
●For playback, use normal (low-noise), CrO2or metal tape
for the best sound. For recording, use normal (low-noise)
or CrO2tape. Metal tape cannot be used for recording.
●Do not use C-120 tapes, tapes with large diameter reels,
or poor-quality tapes, as they may cause malfunctions.
●Before loading a tape into the cassette compartment,
tighten the slack with a pen or pencil.
●Cassettes have removable tabs which prevent accidental
recording or erasing from taking place. Removing the tab
will protect the corresponding side from being erased.
Cover the tab holes with adhesive tape to erase or record
again.
●When covering erasure prevention tab holes, do not cover
the CrO2and metal detection holes located between them.
Otherwise, the deck will sense the tape as normal tape.
●TAPE 1: Playback only.

■Speaker connection
Unplug the AC power lead from the AC socket before con-
necting or disconnecting any components.
For the front, centre and
sub woofer speakers

Front speakers
Connect each front speaker wire to the FRONT SPEAKER ter-
minals as shown.
Use speakers with an impedance of 8 ohms or more, as lower
impedance speakers can damage the unit.
●Connect the black wire to the minus (-) terminal, and the red
wire to the plus (+) terminal.
Centre speaker
Connect the centre speaker wire to the CENTER SPEAKER ter-
minals as shown.
Use a speaker with an impedance of 8 ohms or more, as a lower
impedance speaker can damage the unit.
●Connect the black wire to the minus (-) terminal, and the red
wire to the plus (+) terminal.
Wires to be used with each speaker
How to connect the speaker wires
1Hold the speaker wire release catch down.
2Insert the wire into the speaker terminal.
3Release the catch.
Caution:
When connecting the speakers to the unit, connect the wires to
the speakers first, and then to the terminals on the unit.

Connect the sub woofer wire to the SUB WOOFER terminals as
shown.
Use a speaker with an impedance of 8 ohms or more, as a lower
impedance speaker can damage the unit.
●Connect the black wire to the minus (−) terminal, and the red
wire to the plus (+) terminal.
Surround speakers
Connect each surround speaker wire to the SURROUND
SPEAKER terminals as shown.
Use speakers with an impedance of 8 ohms or more, as lower
impedance speakers can damage the unit.
●Connect the wire with the white line to the minus (−) terminal
and the plain wire to the plus (+) terminal.
Caution:
●Do not short out the speaker wires. When the power
is on and the speaker wires are shorted out, "PRO-
TECT" will appear and the unit will enter the stand-by
mode. (See page 42.)
●Do not reverse the right channel and left channel
wires when connecting the speakers to the unit.
●Do not let bare speaker wires touch each other, as this may
damage the amplifier and/or speakers.
●Do not allow any objects to fall into or to be placed in the bass
reflex ducts.
●Do not stand or sit on the speakers. If the speakers fall or
collapse, you may be injured.

Example: When installed on the wall
■Placing the speakers
When you connect this unit to a DVD player playing a disc with
the trademark, you can enjoy realistic, powerful
sound by playing the sound track through 6 channels; the front
left, front right, centre, surround left, surround right and sub
woofer speakers.
The best sound will be achieved by placing each speaker the
same distance from the listener. Arrange the speakers so that
the layout is as close as possible to the diagram shown in this
illustration.
●Front speakers
The front left and right speakers have individual shapes.
For best performance, place the speakers as shown in the dia-
gram to the left.
Place a TV halfway between the front left and front right speakers.
●Centre speaker
It is recommended that the centre speaker be placed on top of
a television.
●Sub woofer
Place the sub woofer near one of the front speakers, and orient
it towards the listener as much as possible.
●Surround speakers
The surround speakers should be installed on the wall. Install
them 60 - 90 cm (23" - 35") above the height of your ears when
seated, if possible. (See page 7.)
When the surround speakers are installed vertically, the speaker
badge will be upside down.
In this case, you can adjust the badge to face the proper direction.
Just turn it by hand.
Note:
The front speakers, centre speaker, and sub woofer are magnet-
ically shielded. Therefore, they may be placed alongside a TV.
However, some colour variation may occur, depending on the
type of TV used.
If colour variations occur ....
turn off the TV (using the power switch). After 15 - 30 minutes,
turn the TV on again.
If the colour variation is still present ...
move the speakers further away from the TV.

■Removing the speaker grilles on the front
speakers
1Remove the lower part of the speaker grille first.
2Remove the upper part of the speaker grille.
Note:
●The speaker grilles on the other speakers cannot be removed.
Caution:
When the speaker grilles are removed, the speaker diaphragm
will be exposed. Make sure nothing comes into contact with the
diaphragm in the speakers.
■Attaching the speaker grilles on the front
speakers
Align the four posts on the speaker grille with the holes in the
speaker.
Push gently on the grille with the palm of your hand to secure
it.
■To mount the surround speakers on the wall
The design of the surround speakers allows them to be hung on
the wall.
Be sure to use the type and size of screw that is shown to the
left.
1Make a hole in the wall using a drill.
2Drive a wall mount plug into the hole using a hammer. Drive
the wall mount plug in until it is flush with the wall surface.
3Drive one screw into the wall mount plug for each speaker
as shown in the illustration.
●Drive the screws, so there is about a 5 mm (3/16") space
between the wall and the head of the screw.
4Mount the surround speaker on the wall so that the screw
head is inserted into the slot on the surround speaker.

■Aerial connection
Supplied FM aerial
Connect the FM aerial wire to the FM 75 OHMS socket and
orient the FM aerial wire in the direction where the strongest
signal can be received.
Supplied MW/LW loop aerial
Connect the MW/LW loop aerial wire to the MW/LW LOOP
socket. Position the MW/LW loop aerial for optimum reception.
Place the MW/LW loop aerial on a shelf, etc., or attach it to a
stand or wall with screws (not supplied).
Notes:
●If you still hear static even after adjusting the position of the
MW/LW loop aerial, try reversing the wires or turn off the power
to any external unit not in use.
●Do not place the aerial wires on the unit. It may result in noise
generation, since the unit is equipped with digital electronics.
Place the MW/LW loop aerial and the FM aerial wire away
from the unit for better reception.
●If the aerial wires are placed near the AC power lead, they
may cause interference.
External FM aerial
Use an external FM aerial (75 ohm coaxial cable) if you require
better reception.
Consult your dealer.
Note:
When an external FM aerial is used, disconnect the supplied FM
aerial wire from the FM 75 OHMS socket.
■Connecting the AC power lead
After connecting the speakers and aerials, plug the AC power
lead into a convenient AC socket.
Note:
●Unplug the AC power lead from the AC socket if the unit will
not be used for a prolonged period of time.
■Demo mode
When the AC power lead is first connected, the word "DEMO"
will scroll across the display and the unit will enter the demon-
stration mode.
To cancel the demonstration mode, press the DEMO button.
Notes:
●The DEMO button will only work when the unit is in the stand-
by mode.
●When the power is on, the DEMO button can be used to select
the equalizer mode.

■Remote control
●When inserting or removing the batteries, push them towards
the ë battery terminal.
●Installing the batteries incorrectly may cause the unit to mal-
function.
Precautions for battery use:
●Insert the batteries according to the direction indicated in the
battery compartment.
●Replace all old batteries with new ones at the same time.
●Do not mix old and new batteries.
●Remove the batteries if they are weak, or if the unit will not
be used for long periods of time. This will prevent potential
damage due to battery leakage.
Caution:
Do not use rechargeable batteries (nickel-cadmium battery, etc.).
Notes concerning use:
●Replace the batteries if control distance decreases or operation
becomes erratic.
●Periodically clean the transmitter LED on the remote control
and the sensor on the main unit with a soft cloth.
●Exposing the sensor on the main unit to strong light may in-
terfere with operation. Change the lighting or the direction of
the unit.
●Keep the remote control away from moisture, excessive heat,
shock, and vibrations.

■Main unit operation buttons
The main unit operation buttons are common to all functions
(CD/Tuner/Tape).
Some buttons may have no function, depending on the mode
selected.
When a button indicator is lit, the corresponding button can be
used.
■To change the brightness of the display
1Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.
2Press the DIMMER button.
●The display will become dimmer.
To return to the original brightness:
Press the DIMMER button again.

■Jog dial
The jog dial is used to select CD track numbers, adjust the clock
and recall a memorised station, etc.
●When the jog dial is turned one step, it will stop at an angle
of about 15˚. This has the same effect as pressing the 3 /
5 or 2 / 4 button on the remote control once.
●If the jog dial is turned further, it has the same effect as press-
ing the 3 / 5 or 2 / 4 button on the remote control
repeatedly.

SETTING THE CLOCK
1Press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the stand-by mode.
2Press the CLOCK button.
3Within 5 seconds, press the MEMORY button.
4Turn the jog dial to select the time display mode.
"0:00" →The 24-hour display will appear.
(0:00 - 23:59)
"AM 12:00"→The 12-hour display will appear.
(AM or PM 12:00 - 11:59)
"AM 0:00" →The 12-hour display will appear.
(AM or PM 0:00 - 11:59)
●Note that this can only be set when the unit is first installed
or it has been reset (see page 42).
5Press the MEMORY button.
6Adjust the hour by turning the jog dial.
●When the jog dial is turned one click clockwise, the time will
increase by 1 hour. When it is turned one click anticlockwise,
the time will decrease by 1 hour.
Keep turning the jog dial to change the time continuously.
●When the 12-hour display is selected, "AM" will change auto-
matically to "PM".
7Press the MEMORY button.
8Adjust the minutes by turning the jog dial.
●When the jog dial is turned one click clockwise, the time will
increase by 1 minute. When it is turned one click anticlockwise,
the time will decrease by 1 minute.
Keep turning the jog dial to change the time continuously.
●The hour setting will not advance even if minutes advance from
"59" to "00".
9Press the MEMORY button.
●The clock starts operating from "0" seconds.
(Seconds are not displayed.)
Note:
●In the event of a power failure or when the AC power lead is
disconnected, the clock display will go out.
When the AC power supply is restored, the clock display will
flash on and off to indicate the time when the power failure
occurred or when the AC power lead was disconnected.
If this happens, follow the procedure below to change the clock
time.
To change the clock time:
When the unit is in the stand-by mode:
➀Press the MEMORY button.
➁Perform steps 6 - 9 above.
When the unit is on:
➀Press the CLOCK button.
➁Within 5 seconds, press the MEMORY button.
➂Perform steps 6 - 9 above.
To see the time display:
Press the CLOCK button.
●The time display will appear for about 5 seconds.
To change the time display mode:
➀Perform steps 1 and 2 in the section "RESETTING THE MI-
CROCOMPUTER", on page 42.
➁Perform steps 1 - 9 above.

■Volume
(Main unit operation)
When the VOLUME control is turned clockwise, the volume
will increase. When it is turned anticlockwise, the volume will
decrease.
(Remote control operation)
Press the VOLUME button to increase the volume and
the VOLUME button to decrease the volume.
●The volume display can be changed within the range of
"0" to "80".
■Pre-programmed equalizer
(Main unit/remote control operation)
When the EQUALIZER/DEMO (EQUALIZER MODE) button
is pressed, the current mode setting will be displayed.
To change to a different mode, press the EQUALIZER/DEMO
(EQUALIZER MODE) button repeatedly.
FLAT The sound is not modified.
HEAVY-1 Bass and treble are slightly emphasised.
HEAVY-2 Bass and treble are emphasised more.
VOCAL Vocals (midrange tones) are emphasised.
SOFT Treble is cut slightly.
Note:
●When the EQUALIZER/DEMO (EQUALIZER MODE) but-
ton is pressed whilst in the Normal/Phantom mode, the
Virtual Surround mode or the QSOUND mode, the current
surround mode will be cancelled.
■Extra bass (X-BASS)
(Main unit/remote control operation)
When the power is first turned on, the unit will enter the
extra bass mode (X-BASS-1) which emphasises the bass
frequencies. When the X-BASS button is pressed, the current
mode setting will be displayed.
To change to a different mode, press the X-BASS button
repeatedly.

You can adjust the balance between the left and right chan-
nels of the front speakers.
1Press the MENU button repeatedly to make "SP LEVEL"
appear.
2Within 10 seconds, press the ITEM button.

Within 10 seconds, turn the jog dial clockwise to increase
the right speaker level (the left speaker level will de-
crease), or turn the jog dial anticlockwise to increase the
left speaker level (the right speaker level will decrease).
(Remote control operation)
Within 10 seconds, pressing the SET UP W button will
increase the right speaker level (the left speaker level will
decrease), or pressing the SET UP X button will increase
the left speaker level (the right speaker level will de-
crease).
●If the jog dial is turned continuously, or the SET UP ( W
or X ) button on the remote control is held down, the
speaker level can be changed continuously.
●The speaker balance, as shown in the display, can be
changed within the range of "1" to "7".
Note:

COMPACT DISC OPERATION
To select the next disc number:
➀When stopped, press the DISC SKIP button.
➁Press the 0 / R button.
●Playback of the next disc will begin, after which each fol-
lowing disc will be played sequentially.
Notes:
●When the DISC SKIP button is pressed during playback,
playback will begin automatically from the next disc. (It is
not necessary to press the 0 / R button again.)
●When one of the disc number buttons ( 1 - 3) is
pressed during playback, playback of the selected disc will
begin automatically.
(It is not necessary to press the 0 / R button again.)
■Loading and playing CDs
1Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.
2Press the CD button.
3Press the 7 OPEN/CLOSE button to open the disc tray.
4Place the CD(s) on the disc tray, label side up.
●CDs can be placed on any open position on the disc tray.
●Be sure to place 8 cm (3") disc in the middle of a disc
tray.
Caution:
Do not stack CDs in the tray.
This can damage the player and the CDs.
5When loading a third disc, press the DISC SKIP button
to turn the disc tray, then place the CD in the open po-
sition.
6Press the 7 OPEN/CLOSE button to close the disc tray.
●The total number of tracks and the total disc playing time
will be displayed. At this time, the disc number indicator
is flashing.
7Press the desired disc number button ( 1 - 3).
8Press the 0 / R button.
●Playback will begin from track 1 on the disc you have
specified to play.
●After the disc finishes playing, the next disc will play au-
tomatically.
●When there is no CD in one of the disc 1 - 3 positions,
that position will be skipped and the next CD will be
played.
●When the last track on the third disc has finished playing,
the unit will stop automatically.
To interrupt playback:
➀Press the CD PAUSE 6 (CD 6 ) button.
●" 6 " will appear.
➁Press the 0 / R button to resume playback from the
same point.
To stop playback:
Press the ■(CD ■) button.
To remove the CDs:
Whilst in the stop mode, press the 7 OPEN/CLOSE button.
●The disc tray will open. Remove the two discs. Then, press
the DISC SKIP button to rotate the disc tray and remove
the remaining disc.
After use:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the stand-by mode.

fast forward, and hold the REV 3 ( 3 / 5 ) button
down for audible fast reverse.
3Normal playback will resume when the REV 3 ( 3 /
5 ) or CUE 2 ( 2 / 4 ) button is released.
Notes:
●When the end of the disc is reached whilst cueing, "END"
will appear in the display. (Even though the next disc has
been loaded, the disc will not be switched.)
Press the REV 3 ( 3 / 5 ) button for fast reverse or
press the ■(CD ■) button to stop CD operation.
●When the beginning of the first track is reached, normal
playback will start.
■APSS (Auto Program Search System)
APSS automatically locates the beginning of any track.
To listen to the track being played again:

Turn the jog dial anticlockwise or press the 3 button for
less than 0.5 seconds during playback.
(Remote control operation)
Press the 3 / 5 button for less than 0.5 seconds during
playback.
To move to the beginning of the next track:
(Main unit operation)
Turn the jog dial clockwise or press the 2 button for less
than 0.5 seconds during playback.
(Remote control operation)
Press the 2 / 4 button for less than 0.5 seconds during
playback.
●To skip a number of tracks at one time, turn the jog dial
on the main unit or press the 3 / 5 or 2 / 4 button
on the remote control repeatedly until the desired track
number is shown.
●To start playing at a desired track, turn the jog dial on the
main unit or press the 3 / 5 or 2 / 4 button on
the remote control whilst in the stop mode to select the
track number. Then press the 0 / R button.
Note:
APSS will move forward or backward from any point on the
disc before playback begins. It will not move forward during
playback of the final track.
Caution:
●Do not carry the unit with discs left in the disc
trays. The discs may come loose inside the unit,
and they may be damaged or cause damage to the
unit. This may also cause malfunctions.
●Do not place two CDs in one disc position.
●Do not push the disc tray whilst it is moving.
●Do not attempt to turn the disc tray by hand.
This may cause malfunctions.
●If the power fails whilst the tray is open, wait until the
power supply is restored.
●If the disc tray is stopped forcibly, "ERROR" will ap-
pear in the display and the unit will not function.
If this occurs, press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter
the stand-by mode and turn it on again.
●If TV or radio interference occurs during CD operation,
move the unit away from the TV or radio.
●If a disc is damaged, dirty, or loaded upside down,
the disc will be skipped and the next disc will play
automatically.
●Do not press the ON/STAND-BY button frequently dur-
ing CD playback. If you do, the "E-01" error will be
displayed and the CD may not operate. If this hap-
pens, press the ON/STAND-BY button one more time,
to enter the stand-by mode. Then, turn the power on
again. The error will be cancelled.

To repeat all of the tracks on up to 3 discs:
Press the 0 / R button twice.

To cancel repeat play:
Press the 0 / R button again.

1Load the CD(s) and close the disc tray.
2Press the RANDOM button to begin random play.
●"RANDOM" will appear.
Note:
●When using random play, be sure to press the CD ■but-
ton, or set the unit in the stand-by mode when you finish
listening. Otherwise, the disc will play continuously.
To cancel random play:

(Automatic Programmable Music Selector)
You can play back the tracks on the CDs in the disc 1 - 3
positions in any order desired. By specifying the disc num-
bers from 1 to 3, and the track numbers from 1 to 99, you
can choose up to 32 selections for playback in the order you
like.
1When in the stop mode, use the disc number buttons
( 1 - 3) to select the desired disc number.
●The selected disc number will flash.
2Turn the jog dial on the main unit or press the 3 / 5
or 2 / 4 button on the remote control to select the
desired track.
●The selected track number will be displayed.
3Press the MEMORY button.
●"MEMORY" will appear to show that the programmed se-
quence is being entered into memory.
4Repeat steps 1 - 3 for any other track. Up to 32 tracks
can be programmed.
●If you make a mistake whilst in the programming mode
("MEMORY" will appear) or if you wish to change your
selections, the programmed tracks can be cleared by
pressing the CLEAR button. The tracks will be cleared
sequentially, starting with the last track entered.
5Press the 0 / R button to start playback of the pro-
grammed selections.
To clear the programmed selections:
●Each time the button is pressed, one track will be cleared,
beginning with the last track programmed.
Notes:
●Opening the disc tray automatically cancels the pro-
grammed sequence.
●Even if you press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the
stand-by mode or the function is changed from CD to some
other function, the programmed selections will not be
cleared.
●During APMS operation, random play is not possible.
Press the CLEAR button whilst the disc is stopped.

Manual tuning:
Press the TUNING ( X or W ) button as many times as re-
quired to adjust the frequency shown on the display to the
frequency of the desired station.
Auto tuning:
When the TUNING ( X or W ) button is pressed for more
than 0.5 seconds, scanning will start automatically and the
tuner will stop at the first receivable broadcast station.
Notes:
●When radio interference occurs during auto scan tuning,
auto scan tuning may stop automatically at that point.
●If a weak station signal is found during auto scan tuning,
the station will skipped.
●To stop the auto tuning, press the TUNING (X or W) button
again.
●When an RDS (Radio Data System) station is tuned in,
the RDS indicator will light first, and then the frequency
will be displayed. Finally, the station name will appear.
5To receive an FM stereo transmission, press the TUNER
(BAND) button so that the "ST" indicator on the display
lights up.
●" j " will appear when an FM broadcast is in stereo.
6If the FM reception is weak, press the TUNER (BAND)
button so that the "ST" indicator goes out.
●Although the reception changes to monaural, the sound
becomes clearer.
After use:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the stand-by mode.
Note:
●The last station tuned in will be recalled, even after chang-
ing the tuning band or the function, or after switching the
unit to the stand-by mode.

■Preset tuning
You can store up to 40 stations in memory (40 stations con-
sisting of any combination of FM, MW and LW stations you
like) and recall them at the push of a button.
To enter stations into memory:
1Perform steps 1 - 6 of the "Tuning" section.
2Press the MEMORY button.
3Within 30 seconds, turn the jog dial until the preset chan-
nel number flashes in the display.
●Store the stations in memory, in order, starting with preset
channel 1.
4Within 30 seconds, press the MEMORY button to store
that station in the selected station preset number memory.
●If the "MEMORY" and preset number indicators go out
before the station is memorised, repeat the operation from
step 2.
5Repeat steps 1 - 4 to set other preset stations, or to
change a preset station.
To recall a memorised station:
Turn the jog dial on the main unit or press the PRESET ( X
or W ) button on the remote control for less than 0.5 seconds
to select the desired station.
●The contents (preset channel number, frequency and fre-
quency band) which have been stored in memory will ap-
pear in the display in numerical order, irrespective of the
frequency bands.
Note:
When searching for a memorised station, do not press the
PRESET button for more than 0.5 seconds.
When the PRESET button is pressed for more than 0.5 sec-
onds, the unit will enter the preset memory scan mode.
Backup function:
The backup function protects all station presets for a few
hours should there be a power failure or the AC power lead
is removed from the AC socket.
■Preset memory scan
The stations saved in the preset memory can be scanned
automatically.
1To scan the preset stations, press the PRESET ( X or
W ) button for more than 0.5 seconds.
●The station preset number flashes and programmed sta-
tions are sequentially received for 5 seconds each.
2Press the PRESET ( X or W ) button again to stop the
memory scan at the desired station.
Note:
When the preset memory does not have any stations stored
in it, the preset memory scan will not function.

RDS (Radio Data System) OPERATION
■Receiving FM Stations with RDS (Radio
Data System)
RDS is a broadcasting service which a growing number of
FM stations are now providing. It allows these FM stations
to send additional signals along with their regular programme
signals. For example, the stations send their station names,
and information about what type of programme they broad-
cast, such as sports or music, etc.
When tuned to an FM station which provide the RDS service,
the RDS will appear, the station frequency (and then the
station name if sent) is displayed.
The TP (Traffic Programme) will appear on the display when
the received broadcast carries traffic announcements, and
the TA (Traffic Announcement) will appear whilst a traffic
announcement is being received.
EON will appear whilst the EON (Enhanced Other Networks
information) data is being broadcast.
Note:
When the TP and TA appear at the same time, an announce-
ment is being made.
When only the TA appears, an announcement is not being
made. (See page 23.)
