1 About this Document
1.1 Documentation structure
This document is part of the FibroLaser III documentation. The various elements of
the technical documentation for FibroLaser III are listed below:
System introduction and planning:
The document provides an overview of the FibroLaser III system and includes
important notes to be adhered to during the project planning.
Installation Manual:
The document includes all relevant information required for the successful
installation of a FibroLaser III system.
Operation Manual:
This document comprises all information required to commission the device with
the commissioning software FibroManager.
Maintenance and Repair:
This document contains all necessary information required for performing the
correct maintenance. Additionally, the document also contains the instructions
for repairs that may be carried out in the field.
1.2 Purpose of the document
This document “Maintenance and Repair” provides important information for the
efficient maintenance and the repair of a FibroLaser III system.
This document is limited to the controller and the sensor cable. Chapter 3
describes the work, which is required for the regular maintenance of the system.
Chapter 4 contains important information on the targeted error analysis. The
repairs on the controller and the sensor cable, which are permitted by Siemens,
are described in chapter 5 through 7.
1.3 Qualified personnel
The FibroLaser III may only be serviced and repaired in conjunction with this
documentation. This work may only be performed by qualified personnel. This
maintenance and repair manual requires a suitable professional qualification for
the performance of the maintenance and repair of modules of the safety
equipment.
Within the context of the safety instructions in this documentation qualified persons
are defined as persons who are authorised to install, earth and mark systems and
circuitry in accordance with the stipulated safety procedures.
General knowledge of electrical engineering, fibre-optics, electrical safety and laser
safety are required in order to understand the maintenance and repair manual. An
additional requirement is that the user of this manual is experienced in the usage of
a PC running the Windows operating system.

1.4 Warranty and liability
Opening the controller housing and the breaking of an adhesive seal on the
housing screws voids any warranty and liability claims!
No warranty or liability is accepted for any maintenance and repair work
performed on the device, which is not performed by the manufacturer!

The controller has not been designed for repair work that is performed by third
parties. Repair work is to be solely performed by the manufacturer. For this, the
device is to be shipped to the technical support department of the manufacturer. In
order to prevent any damage during shipment, packaging material must be used
that is suitable for safe transport.
Maintenance and repairs may only be completed by service technicians authorised
by the manufacturer, who have completed special training on the equipment and
acquired the appropriate knowledge.
Authorised service technicians must perform and document all maintenance and
repair work in accordance with the stipulations of the ISO 9001 standard.
The manufacturer accepts no liability for damages or injuries that occur due to the
non-compliance of the instructions contained in this manual as well as additional
applicable documentation:

Use of non-original parts or spare parts
Unauthorised modification of the device without the written permission of the
manufacturer
Use of unauthorised accessories

1.5 Legal notices

2 Safety
2.1 Safety instructions
This operating manual contains instructions which the user must follow in order to
ensure his or her personal safety and to prevent any damage to property.
Instructions in regard to personal safety are emphasized with safety warning
symbols. Instructions which only pertain to property damage do not have an
additional safety warning symbol.
The individual safety warning symbols are shown below with the corresponding
instructions. These are graded in accordance with their respective hazard potential
and their cause.

2.2 General safety
CAUTION!
The controller may only be used as intended by the manufacturer (see the
installation manual or the operating manual FibroLaser III).
Switch the controller off before connecting or disconnecting any optical fibre sensor
cable. Never pull-off an optical fibre connector from an E2000 optical port during an
active measurement. The emitted laser radiation may damage the ferrule endfaces
of pigtail and controller.
Never connect pigtails with contaminated ferrule endfaces to the controller.
Contaminated endfaces may easily be damaged by laser radiation.

2.3 Electrical safety
WARNING!
Electricity can be a danger to health and life. Immediate
medical assistance must be sought following contact with
dangerous voltage.
The controller contains components carrying dangerous
voltages. Do not open or repair the controller. Do not operate a
controller with damaged housing.
Prior to connecting the power supply cable, ensure that the supply voltage is within
the range given at the AC or DC supply socket of the controller.
The AC power supply cable has to be disconnected before replacing the fuse at
the power supply of the controller. Accumulator terminals may never be shorted or
come into contact with the housing of the controller.
Applicable national safety regulations governing the use of electricity must be
followed. Electrical supply and earthing must be carried out in accordance with
applicable national regulations.
2.4 Laser safety
WARNING!
The controller contains a laser source. Caution, the laser
radiation is invisible! The controller is classified as a class 1M
laser product.
The following label is attached close to the fibre connector(s) on the controller:
Attached connections:
The laser emits continuously modulated laser radiation at a wavelength of 1550
nm. The modulation frequency is between 500 Hz and 500 MHz. The maximum
average power is 110 mW, and the maximum peak power is 200 mW.
The accessible laser radiation represents no danger for the human eye or skin
assuming that:
the radiation is not focused by optical instruments like magnifying glasses,
lenses or microscopes and
the end of an optical fiber or cable is not approached closer than 10 cm to the
eye or skin.
With optical instruments or during direct approach of the optical fibre to the human
body, laser radiation can generate heat that damages the skin or the cornea of the
eye. Such damages are wet bulges, cataract and burnings of cornea and skin In
the case of eye damage, medical assistance must be sought immediately.
National regulations on laser safety have to be considered during installation and
operation of the controller.
The controller must be switched off before directly viewing on fibre ends, splices or
optical fibre connectors with or without optical instruments.
Use only CE marked fibre-optic microscopes equipped with a 1550 nm DIR LB3
laser safety filter in accordance with EN 207.

Additionally, sufficient measures must be taken to protect against inadvertent
reactivation. A warning sign must be placed close to the mains switch of the
controller.

Optical fibre ends must not be directly approached to the eye or the skin.
Laser radiation emitted from fibre ends must not be focussed with optical
instruments onto the eye or the skin.
The controller must be operated with attached fibre(s). Unused E2000 optical fibre
ports of the controller must be terminated using dummy connectors.
Emission of laser radiation at the end of a sensor fibre or cable must be prevented
by using an optical termination box or a termination kit.
The laser is automatically switched on by starting a measurement. The LED’s
designated with “LASER ACTIVE / LASER ON” at the front and rear panels of the
controller indicate laser operation.
If an optical fibre sensor cable, pigtail or optical fibre is broken, it must be repaired,
terminated or replaced immediately.

2.5 Application specific safety
During the commissioning and testing of the FibroLaser III it must be ensured that:
erroneous triggering of transmission devices is prevented in a reliable manner,
the fire brigade is informed before test triggering of transmission devices,
the triggering of fire extinguishing controls is prevented,
the responsible person is present when third party devices are triggered,
the collective fault output of the controller is connected to the alarm control
system,
the collective alarm output of the controller is connected to the alarm control
system, and
a programmable output is assigned to the test mode and connected to the alarm
control system if the test mode shall be used.
WARNING!
A safe distance from high voltage lines must be maintained in
railway tunnels with electrical traction lines.
Only splice boxes with grounding may be used for metal
containing optical fibre sensor cables. Alternatively, metal-free
sensor cables may be used without grounding.

3 Maintenance
3.1 General
The controller has been developed in such a manner that maintenance is not
required outside of the scheduled maintenance intervals. The functions are
monitored internally by means of safety circuits and software routines. Malfunctions
are reported automatically and are indicated by means of light-emitting diodes
(LED’s) on the front of the device. Irrespective of this, annual functional tests are
required in order to ensure the correct function in accordance with the technical
safety requirements. The maintenance work requires an operational controller
without error messages.
Additional testing or shorter maintenance intervals may be required due to national
legislative and normative requirements as well as an increased requirement with
regard to safety.
The FibroManager is used to read out the event memory, the status report and
the support information of the controller BEFORE and AFTER the work and
these must be stored for documentary purposes.

3.2.2 Regular maintenance work
The following work must be performed in connection with regular maintenance:
Switch the key switch on the controller to the position “Test Mode” all LED
displays on the front panel of the device will light up for a few seconds (LED
test). Switch the key switch on the controller back to the position “0”.
Connect the controller to the service PC and perform a “Quick Start” with the
FibroManager. Check all channels and observe the status messages on the
individual channels. Remove possible faults on the sensor cables or fibre-optical
connectors. Compare the fibre lengths with the values taken during the previous
maintenance and if necessary, clarify possible causes of changes.
Read out the event memory of the controller with the FibroManager and analyse
it with the help of the filter options, e.g. in regard to errors, warnings and other
events.
Generate and evaluate the temperature profile and backscatter curves.
Perform test triggering, verification of the data transfer and alarm forwarding as
well as additional application-related tests that are described in the operation
manual of the controller and intended in accordance with national regulations.
Please refer to the operation manual for all information on controller maintenance
such as how to record data, generate the temperature profile and backscatter
curve, carry out test operations on the controller and the support functions such as
how to reading out the event memory or generating reports.

3.3 Maintenance work on the sensor cable
In principle, the sensor cable does not require any maintenance. However, during
an annual inspection it is useful to perform a visual inspection of the sensor cables,
the connection cables and the connectors with regard to visible damage such as
breaks, indentations, strong kinks or bend radii that are too small.
Fibre-optical connectors of sensor cables must always be carefully cleaned before
they are connected to the fibre-optical ports of the controller and must be inspected
with a microscope suitable for fibre-optical connectors.
The controller is delivered with clean internal fibre-optical connectors. Unassigned
ports are factory-provided fitted with dummy connectors in order to prevent
contamination or damage and do not require cleaning before their first use.
During routine maintenance, cleaning of the fibre-optical connectors is only
required when the insertion loss of a fibre-optical connector is too high or the
temperature profile shows anomalies. Cleaning is also required when the message
“CHECK CONNECTOR” is displayed during the check of a channel with the “Quick
Start” feature of the software FibroManager.
3.3.1 Tools
The following tools are required for the check and cleaning of the fibre-optical
connectors:
a suitable microscope for fibre-optical connectors with a magnification of at least
100x up to a maximum of 200x
service adapter E2000
suitable cleaning cloth for glass fibre or optics
suitable ultra-pure solvent
ferrule cleaner
infrared sensor card

Recommendations:
Cleaning cloth Lint-free and suitable for the cleaning of optical components
in accordance with the specifications, such as:
- KIMTECH Science KIMWIPE® EX-L
- Chemtronics OpticWipes TM
- Newport Optics Cleaning Tissue
Solvents Ethanol or isopropanol in accordance with the specifications
for the use in UV spectroscopy or in a similar ultra-pure
quality (>99.9%), such as:
- Merck Uvasol®
- Sigma-Aldrich spectrophotometric grade
Ferrule cleaner - SEIKOH GIKEN Ferrule MateTM End-face cleaner
SFM250 E2000
CAUTION!
Use only microscopes for fibre-optical connectors with a laser safety filter
(1550 nm, DIR LB3) in accordance with the requirements as specified in EN 207.
Please refer to the manufacturer’s documentation provided with the equipment
for detailed instructions on the operation of the microscope.
3.3.2 Cleaning the fibre-optical connectors

Visual inspection of the fibre-optical connectors
Inspect the endfaces of the fibre-optical connectors with a microscope suitable for
fibre-optical connectors with a magnification in the range of at least 100x up to a
maximum value of 200x. A service adapter E2000 should be used for the easy
opening of the protective flap of a fibre-optical connector.

The endface of the fibre-optical connector is an optical precision part. Even
minimal contamination has a negative impact on the quality of the controller’s
measurement. Fibre-optical connectors with a damaged endface must be replaced.
The cleaning process includes both the fibre-optical connectors of the sensor cable
that are connected from outside as well as the internal fibre-optical connectors.

The image on the left in fig. 9 shows a flawless endface of a fibre-optical
connector.
In the centre image, the optical fibre (centre point) is partially covered by a piece of
lint or a dust deposit. This contamination can be removed with suitable means.
The image on the right shows an optical fibre (centre point) that has been
damaged by scratches or burns by a contaminant. This fibre-optical connector
must be replaced.
Minor abrasions on the ferrule surface and small scratches outside of the fibre core
are acceptable, when the insertion loss values are within the permissible
specification of the controller (for details, see the installation manual or the
operation manual of the controller). The internal fibre-optical connectors must be
replaced by the manufacturer when holes, excessive mechanical wear, deep
scratches or non-removable contamination of the connector or of the ferrule
surface are present.
CAUTION!
Do not expose the ferrule to mechanical stress or damage such as prohibited
temperatures or hard tool surfaces!

Cleaning the fibre-optical connectors
In order to clean the contaminated endface of a fibre-optical connector, the
protective flap of the connector must be opened carefully. Use a service adapter
E2000 to open the protective flap.
1 Lightly moisten a suitable lint-free cleaning cloth with an ultra-pure solvent.
2 Carefully wipe the surface with the moist cleaning cloth. While doing this,
avoid touching the endface or the sections of the cleaning cloth that have
been used for the cleaning of the parts.
3 Following the successful cleaning, wipe off the surface of the ferrule with a dry
section of the cleaning cloth in order to fully remove any solvent residue.
4 Subsequently check the surface with the microscope.
5 Insert the cleaned and intact fibre-optical connector into the corresponding
fibre-optical port of the controller.
6 Switch the controller on and check the corresponding channel with the “Quick
Start” feature of the software FibroManager. If the message “CHECK
CONNECTOR” is displayed, switch the controller off and repeat the cleaning
procedure of the fibre-optical connector. If this does not lead to the desired
result, then the cleaning of the internal connector is required. In this case, the
fibre-optical connector of the sensor cable must also be cleaned again before
performing the reconnection procedure.
3.3.3 Cleaning the internal fibre-optical connectors
Cleaning the internal fibre-optical connectors with a ferrule cleaner
The corresponding internal fibre-optical connector must be cleaned when the
message “CHECK CONNECTOR” is displayed while checking this channel with
the “Quick Start” feature of the software FibroManager and this message is
displayed repeatedly during the re-checking of the channel, even after repeated
and thorough cleaning of the exterior fibre-optical connector.
The opening of the controller housing via the housing cover is not required for
the cleaning of the internal fibre-optical connectors with a ferrule cleaner.
The cleaning of the internal fibre-optical connectors of the controller is possible
without requiring the opening of the controller housing by using a ferrule cleaner.
The ferrule cleaner is an optional tool for the cleaning of fibre-optical connectors.
The fibre-optical connectors can be cleaned while they are installed in a mating
adapter.
The instructions of the manufacturer as specified in the documentation of the
respective ferrule cleaner must be observed during the cleaning of the internal
fibre-optical connectors. It is recommended to press the feed button of the ferrule
cleaner three to five times.

In practice, the use of a ferrule cleaner provides good results. In the case of an
incomplete cleaning, this process should be repeated several times.
Alternatively, the cleaning with a cleaning cloth is possible following the partial

optical connectors with a cleaning cloth”).
Cleaning the internal fibre-optical connectors with a cleaning cloth
If a ferrule cleaner is not available or the cleaning with the ferrule cleaner has not
been successful, then the optical ports panel can be partially pulled out for cleaning
and inspection of the internal fibre-optical connectors just like a drawer. In this
case, cleaning with a suitable cloth is possible.
WARNING!
Switch the controller off before optical fibres, splice
connections or optical fibre connectors are inspected!
Additionally, sufficient measures must be taken to protect
against inadvertent reactivation.
Only the partial pulling out of the optical ports panel is required for the cleaning
of the internal fibre-optical connectors without a ferrule cleaner.
The opening of the controller housing via the housing cover is not required!
CAUTION!
Internal fibre-optical connectors that are damaged or do not work correctly after
repeated cleaning must be replaced by the manufacturer.

Procedure:
1 Switch the controller off and disconnect the power supply cable before
partially pulling out the optical ports panel.
2 Loosen the four screws of the optical ports panel, so that these protrude at
least 1 cm (see figure 13).
3 Partially pull out the optical ports panel holding the optical ports from the
housing. Stop pulling when the module is located in the position as shown in
figure 13 and you feel resistance against pulling it out further.
4 Press on the locking tab of the connector that you wish to clean and carefully
pull it out completely from the corresponding mating adapter.
5 Carefully pull out the orange glass fibre cable a few centimetres from the
housing, but under no circumstances beyond the point of resistance, until the
connector reaches the position as shown in figure 13.
6 Now you can perform, as described above, a visual inspection of the
connector and clean it with a cloth.
7 Then carefully push the cleaned connector with the glass fibre cable back into
the housing without kinking or crushing the glass fibre cable.
8 Carefully plug the connector into the corresponding mating adapter and
engage it by means of the locking tab. Ensure that the channel number
indicated on the glass fibre cable matches the channel number assigned to
the mating adapter on the optical ports panel.
9 Carefully push the optical ports panel holding the optical ports back into the
housing without kinking the glass fibre cable(s).
10 Tighten the four screws.
CAUTION!
The printed circuit board, on which the mating adapters are mounted, holds
sensitive electronic components. Do not touch them!
The manipulation of other components, which are accessible when the optical
ports panel is partially pulled out, will void the warranty and liability of the
manufacturer.
Do not disconnect the electrical connection to the printed circuit board!
