Introduction 1
1.1 Purpose of this documentation
These instructions contain all information required to commission and use the device. Read the
instructions carefully prior to installation and commissioning. In order to use the device
correctly, 󹪝rst review its principle of operation.
The instructions are aimed at persons mechanically installing the device, connecting it
electronically, con󹪝guring the parameters and commissioning it, as well as service and
maintenance engineers.

1.2 History
The contents of these instructions are regularly reviewed and corrections are included in
subsequent editions. We welcome all suggestions for improvement.

1.7 Transportation and storage

• Keep the original packaging for subsequent transportation.
• Devices/replacement parts should be returned in their original packaging.
• If the original packaging is no longer available, ensure that all shipments are properly
packaged to provide su󹪟cient protection during transport. Siemens cannot assume liability
for any costs associated with transportation damages.

The packaging only provides limited protection against moisture and in󹪝ltration.
• Provide additional packaging as necessary.

This device left the factory in good working condition. In order to maintain this status and to
ensure safe operation of the device, observe these instructions and all the speci󹪝cations relevant
to safety.
Observe the information and symbols on the device. Do not remove any information or symbols
from the device. Always keep the information and symbols in a completely legible state.
2.1 General safety instructions
CAUTION
Correct, reliable operation of the product requires proper transport, storage, positioning
and assembly as well as careful operation and maintenance.
Only quali󹪝ed personnel should install or operate this instrument.
Note
Alterations to the product, including opening or improper modi󹪝cations of the product are not
permitted.
If this requirement is not observed, the CE mark and the manufacturer's warranty will expire.

The device has been tested at the factory, based on the safety requirements. In order to maintain
this condition over the expected life of the device, the requirements described in these
Operating Instructions must be observed.

2.3 Use in hazardous areas
Quali󹪝ed personnel for hazardous area applications
Persons who install, connect, commission, operate, and service the device in a hazardous area
must have the following speci󹪝c quali󹪝cations:
• They are authorized, trained or instructed in operating and maintaining devices and systems
according to the safety regulations for electrical circuits, high pressures, aggressive, and
hazardous media.
• They are authorized, trained, or instructed in carrying out work on electrical circuits for
hazardous systems.
• They are trained or instructed in maintenance and use of appropriate safety equipment
according to the pertinent safety regulations.
WARNING
Use in hazardous area
Risk of explosion.
• Only use equipment that is approved for use in the intended hazardous area and labeled
accordingly.
• Do not use devices that have been operated outside the conditions speci󹪝ed for hazardous
areas. If you have used the device outside the conditions for hazardous areas, make all Ex
markings unrecognizable on the nameplate.
WARNING
Loss of safety of device with type of protection "Intrinsic safety Ex i"
If the device or its components have already been operated in non-intrinsically safe circuits or
the electrical speci󹪝cations have not been observed, the safety of the device is no longer
ensured for use in hazardous areas. There is a risk of explosion.
• Connect the device with type of protection "Intrinsic safety" solely to an intrinsically safe
circuit.
• Observe the speci󹪝cations for the electrical data on the certi󹪝cate and/or in Technical

3.1 Overview
SITRANS FM TRANSMAG 2 is a pulsed alternating 󹪝eld magnetic 󹪞owmeter where the magnetic
󹪝eld strength is much higher than conventional DC pulsed magnetic 󹪞owmeters.
This makes it ideal for di󹪟cult applications as:
• High concentrated paper stock > 3 %
• Heavy mining slurries
• Mining slurries with magnetic particles
The complete 󹪞owmeter consists of the 󹪞ow sensor MAG 911/E and the associated SITRANS FM
TRANSMAG 2 transmitter.
TRANSMAG 2 is available in a remote version. The MAG 911/E sensor is available with diameters
from DN 15 to DN 1000 (½" to 40").
3.2 Features
• Fast signal processing with 16-bit technology
• Automatic recognition of the sensor type and calibration data as result of SmartPLUG.
The SmartPLUG is a pre-ampli󹪝er in the sensor with integrated data module which contains
the stored factory data of the sensor and customer-speci󹪝c data.
• PROFIBUS-PA (Pro󹪝le 2.0) or HART communication
• Simple, multi-language menu-guided operation with two-line display and four optical input
elements
• Self-monitoring function
• Internal simulation for all input and output functions
• Monitoring of the sensor using magnetizing current and reference voltage as well as wet
electrode function
• Analog output and digital outputs for pulses, device status, limits, 󹪞ow direction, frequency
output
• Optional passive switch input for resetting the counter values or for switching o󹪜 the
measuring equipment (PZR)
• With pulsed alternating 󹪝eld for minimum conductivity of 0.1 μS/cm

3.3 BUS Communication
SITRANS FM TRANSMAG 2 is available with HART or PROFIBUS communication.
• The HART protocol is superimposed on the analog output (current output). This
communication capability permits parameterization of the device using the HART
communicator or a PC/laptop and SIMATIC PDM software in addition to local operation.
• In the PROFIBUS PA version, the analog output and the digital output 2 are replaced by the
digital PROFIBUS PA output. Parameterization of the device is then possible using PROFIBUS
communication and SIMATIC PDM in addition to local operation.

3.4 Theory of operation
The 󹪞ow measuring principle is based on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.

Ui = When an electrical conductor of length L is moved at velocity v, perpendicular to the lines of
󹪞ux through a magnetic 󹪝eld of strength B, the voltage Ui is induced at the ends of the conductor

• v = Velocity of conductor (media)

Ui = k x v, the electrode signal is directly proportional to the 󹪞uid velocity
Operating principle
The coil current module generates a pulsating magnetizing current that drives the coils in the
sensor. The current is permanently monitored and corrected. Errors or cable faults are registered
by the self-monitoring circuit.
The input circuit ampli󹪝es the 󹪞ow-proportional induced voltage signal from the electrodes. The
input impedance is extremely high: >1014 Ω which allows 󹪞ow measurements on 󹪞uids with
conductivities as low as 5 µS/cm. Measuring errors due to cable capacitance are eliminated due
to active cable screening.
The digital signal processor converts the analog 󹪞ow signal to a digital signal and suppresses
electrode noise through a digital 󹪝lter. Inaccuracies in the transmitter as a result of long-term
drift and temperature drift are monitored and continuously compensated for via the self-
monitoring circuit. The analog to digital conversion takes place in an ultra low noise ASIC with
23 bit signal resolution. This has eliminated the need for range switching. The dynamic range of
the transmitter is therefore unsurpassed with a turn down ratio of minimum 3000:1.

3.5 Operating principle
SITRANS FM TRANSMAG 2 is a microprocessor-based transmitter with a built-in alphanumeric
display in several languages. The transmitters evaluate the signals from the associated
electromagnetic sensors and also ful󹪝l the task of a power supply unit which provides the
magnet coils with a constant current.
The magnetic 󹪞ux density in the sensor is additionally monitored by reference coils. Further
information on connection, mode of operation and installation can be obtained from the sensor
data sheets.

SITRANS F 󹪞owmeters with minimum IP65/NEMA 4X enclosure rating are suitable for indoor and
outdoor installations.
• Make sure that pressure and temperature speci󹪝cations indicated on the device nameplate /
label will not be exceeded.

Special requirements apply to the location and interconnection of sensor and transmitter.

4.1 Installation safety precautions
WARNING
High pressure hazard
In applications with working pressures/media that can be dangerous to people, surroundings,
equipment or others in case of pipe fracture, we recommend that special precautions such as
special placement, shielding or installation of a pressure guard or a safety valve are taken when
the 󹪞owmeter is mounted.
4.2 Sensor installation
4.2.1 Determining a location
Note
The sensor must always be completely 󹪝lled with liquid.

• Avoid the following installations
– Installation at the highest point in the pipe system
– Installation in vertical pipes with free outlet

Inlet and outlet conditions
To achieve accurate 󹪞ow measurement it is essential to have straight lengths of inlet and outlet
pipes and a certain distance to pumps and valves.
It is also important to centre the 󹪞owmeter in relation to pipe 󹪞anges and gaskets.
