TheSimradFM90isathird-wireMultibeamTrawlSonar.Itallowsforaccurateand
efcientmonitoringofthenetopening,thecatchsituation,andtheshingconditions.The
FM90hasafastrefreshratethatallowsyoutoviewthesonarimagesinrealtime.
TheSimradFM90Multibeam
TrawlSonarprovidessignicant
improvementsovertheSimrad
FS70TrawlSonarandother
scanningsonars.TheFM90Sonar
communicateswiththevesselby
meansofathird-wiresystemusing
veryhighbit-ratedigitalsubscriber
line(VDSL2)communication,
transmittingreal-timeimagesof
thenetopeningatrapidrefresh
rates.Inaddition,anechosounderlookingup("upsounder")monitorsshescapingover
thenet,whileanotherechosoundershowsthefoot-rope,theseabottom,andthesh
enteringthenet.
BymeansofthesubmergedTrawlUnit,theFM90communicateswithanumberofSimrad
PI/PX40kHzcatchmonitoringsensorsbymeansofhydroacousticlinks.Uptosix
measurementscanbemadesimultaneously.TheFM90supportspitch,roll,depth,catch,
bottom-contact,temperature,spread,height,andgeometrysensors.Standardpitch,roll,
depth,andtemperaturesensorsarealsobuiltintotheTrawlUnit.
TheFM90isasolid-statesonarsystem.Thisdesigneliminatesmovingparts,andincreases
reliabilityandavailabilityduringshingoperations.
TheFM90DeploymentPackhasayellowtopand
blackbottomtoassistyouinvisualconrmation
priortolaunchandtoassistinvisualsightingduring
recovery.Itisquickllingandquicktodrain.It
hasimprovedhandholdstoassisthandling—even
withgloveson.Thestrainreliefcanbeaccessed
usingstandardtoolswithoutopeningtheentire
DeploymentPack.
Specicationsandfunctionality
TheFM90isauniquesonar,bothindesignandfunctionality.WhentheFM90sonar
pings,itsendsoutsoundenergyina240-degreesector.Thisenergyisreectedfrom
thenet,fromsh,andfromothertargetsinthewatercolumn.Thereectedenergyis
receivedbythetransducer,processed,andshownonthedisplay.BecausetheFM90pings

acrossawideareainoneping,therefreshratetogenerateapictureofthenetopeningis
almostinstantaneous.Thisgivesyoureal-timeimages,allowingyoutoadjusttovery
fastmovementsofshschools.
TheFM90usesanupdatedversionofKongsbergMesotech’striedandtestedM3Sonar®
multibeamprocessingsoftware,successfullydeployedworld-wideformanyyears.The
softwareusesinnovativeprocessingalgorithmstoautomaticallyoptimizetheimagequality
specicallyforshingapplications.ItincludesFMtransmissions(alsoknownas“Chirp”)
toensureaclutter-freepicturewithaveryhighresolutioninrange.
TheFM90ProcessorUnitiscontrolledbytheMicrosoft®Windows®operatingsystem.This
allowsforaexiblechoiceofpresentationmodes,andforalargerangeofuserapplications.

AnycommercialdisplaycanbeusedwiththeFM90MultibeamTrawlSonar,providedthat
thedisplaymeetstheminimumrequirements.

ThedisplayisnotastandardpartoftheFM90delivery.Thisisacommercialitemthat

thispublication,thecomputerisreferredtoastheProcessorUnit.TheProcessorUnitis
normallymountedonthebridge.
TheFM90ProcessorUnitisaruggedandpowerful
computer.Itisdesignedforlonglifeinademanding
maritimeenvironment.Itcontainstheoperationalsoftware,
andofferstheuserinterfacethatallowsyoutocontrolthe
FM90.Italsocontrolstheinterfacetoperipheraldevices.
TheProcessorUnitisbasedontheMicrosoft®64-bit
Windows10operatingsystem.
Note
TheoperatingsystemhasbeenmodiedtomakethecomputerworkwiththeFM90.These
modicationsincluderemovalofallsafetyfeaturesprovidedbyMicrosoft®.Thebuilt-in
rewallandallvirusprotectionfeatureshavebeenremoved.Anyattempttousethe
computerforanyotherpurposesthanFM90operation,suchasgames,desktopapplications
andInternetconnection,mayresultinseriousdamagetotheprogram.Suchdamages
arenotcoveredbythewarranty.
Power/VDSLUnit
ThePower/VDSLUnitincludesboththepowersupplyandthemodemrequiredto
communicatewiththeSonarHeadinonebox.

TheTrawlUnitismadeupofseveralcomponents,includingtheSonarHead,enclosedina
DeploymentPack.
InadditiontotheFM90SonarHead,theTrawl
Unitincludesthethird-wireextensionwhip
andhydrophone(s).Mountingshacklesonthe
DeploymentPackaidinattachingtheTrawl
Unittothenet.Anaccesspanelprovideseasy
accesstothethird-wirewhipandstrain-relief
block,minimizingtheneedtoopenthe
DeploymentPack.
TheTrawlUnitcontainsanaft-lookingcatch
hydrophonetocommunicatewithyourcatch
monitoringsensors.Anoptionalforward-lookingPIhydrophonecommunicateswith
sensorsmountedonthetrawldoor,ifyouhaveany.TheTrawlUnitisattachedtothethird
wire,whichcarriessonardatatotheProcessorUnit.
Third-wiretrawlcable
Thethird-wiretrawlcablecarriesdatafromtheSonarHeadtotheProcessorUnit.The
third-wiretrawlcableisnotpartofthedelivery.Itmustbeprovidedbytheinstallation
shipyardortheclient.
Thethird-wiretrawlcableischosenformaximummechanicalstrength,durabilityand
minimumattenuationofthesignals.Cablesincommonusearecoaxialwithbreakingpoints
of1500and6000kg.
Important
Yourthird-wireinstallationmustfollowthebestpracticesforEMCcompatibilityto
minimizeelectromagneticinterferenceandensureoptimalperformanceoftheFM90system.

Winchsystem
ThecablewinchisnotapartoftheSimradFM90delivery.Itmustbeprovidedbythe
installationshipyardortheclient.
Networksecurity
IfaFM90systemisconnectedtoalocalareanetwork,datasecurityisimportant.
EquipmentmanufacturedbyKongsbergMaritimearefrequentlyconnectedtothevessel's
localareanetwork(LAN).Whenyouconnectacomputertoalocalareanetworkyouwill
alwaysexposethedataonthatcomputer.Allothercomputersconnectedtothesame
networkmaybeabletoaccessyourdata.Severalthreatsmayimmediatelyoccur:
•Remotecomputerscanreadthedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethebehaviourofthecomputer,forexamplebyinstalling
unwantedsoftware.
Usually,twoparametersareusedtodenethethreatlevel:
1Thelikelihoodthatanyremoteconnectionwilldoanyoftheabove.
2Thedamagedoneifaremoteconnectionsucceedsdoingthis.
KongsbergMaritimehasnoinformationregardingthecompletesysteminstallationon
anyvessel.SystemsprovidedbyKongsbergMaritimeareregardedasstand-aloneofine
systems.Theyarestand-aloneeventhoughtheymaybeconnectedtoanetworkforsensor
interfacesand/ordatadistribution.
Note
NonetworksafetyapplicationsareinstalledonanyKongsbergMaritimecomputers.The
computersarethusnotprotectedagainstviruses,malwareorunintentionalaccessfrom
externalusers.
SecuringtheFM90systemitselfhasnomeaningunlessthereisapolicyinplacethatsecures
allcomputersinthenetwork.Thispolicymustincludephysicalaccessbytrainedandtrusted
users.Thecustomer/enduseroftheFM90systemwillalwaysbeinchargeofdeningand
implementingasecuritypolicy,andprovidingtherelevantnetworksecurityapplications.
