Chapter 1: Understanding Versity
Spectralink Versity smartphones combine the familiarity of the Android™platform with tailored
Spectralink applications and the advanced functionality and durability needed for a workplace
environment. Versity 95/96-Series is offered in both “cell phone” (LTE) and Wi-Fi models.
Versity 92-Series is a dedicated Wi-Fi smartphone. As a cell phone, the 96xx models participate
in the worldwide network of telephony as well as having Wi-Fi capability. The 95xx and 92xx
models operate as Wi-Fi devices that utilize the wireless infrastructure installed in your
workplace for connection and communication. All models are tremendously helpful devices for
roaming workers.
Note: Configurable features
Many of the features detailed in this Guide are configurable by your system
administrator and may not follow the exact steps outlined here. Contact your
system administrator for more information if you have trouble understanding how to
use certain features.
Like other devices powered by Android, Versity smartphones use applications to deploy
features. Additionally, Versity smartphones leverage advanced mobility management methods
already operating within a facility, thus ensuring safety, performance and functionality. Contact
your system administrator for information about what capabilities are configured for your facility.
This user guide shows you how to use the Spectralink applications installed on your Spectralink
Versity smartphone. This chapter orients you to the physical features of the various smartphone
models and introduces the features that are unique to Versity.
Spectralink applications are translated into many languages. If you select a language not
supported by Spectralink, labels associated with specialized applications may appear in English.
Smartphone Wi-Fi range
Your range—the area within which your smartphone will work---depends on the model you have
been provided and the arrangement of the infrastructure that supports Versity. The Wi-Fi
models work only within the boundaries established by your facility.
Out-of-range behavior
When in call and a Wi-Fi Versity moves out of range, the call will break up, the registration may
expire, and the call will drop although it may still look active. If you move back in range before
the registration expires, the call may resume normal audio.

Smartphone LTE range (96-Series only)
LTE models have signal coverage outside the facility. Contact your system administrator if you
have questions about your facility’s coverage area. If you have an LTE phone, your
administrator will provide you with training.
Versity Hardware
Power User: Third party accessories
Third party accessories such as keyboards or a mouse may not work if an incorrect
cable is used to connect to the phone’s USB port. When buying these products,
look for “Benson Approved” and “OTG” cables. Any cables or adapters must be
USB certified and built to the USB C specification.

App Basics
As your Versity smartphone comes from the factory, it is loaded with several specialized
Spectralink apps as well as with a number of apps that are supplied by the Android platform.
Spectralink apps provide features especially designed for our customers. Utilities apps enhance
the Android experience by offering programming refinements to the system administrator to
make Versity work better in a controlled environment.
Spectralink apps have a consistent design—turquoise field with a white logo and a bit of orange.
Apps with an orange gear are only used to configure settings---enable/disable an app or set
parameters. Some of these can be fully controlled by the system administrator. See examples
below.
Versity 95/96-Series collection
Spectralink apps are displayed in the Spectralink Collection on the Home screen. Tap the
collection icon to display the Spectralink app icons. Spectralink apps not listed here are
available in the list of installed apps. Each Spectralink app is explained in this document.
Versity 92 Series collections
Spectralink Features apps are displayed in the Spectralink Collection on the Home screen.
Spectralink Utilities apps available to you are displayed in the Utilities Collection on the Home
screen.

Every app uses its overflow menu to display a menu of additional items. The About option
provides information about the app itself, including the version number. You might need to
provide this information to the system administrator from time to time.
To open the About screen, tap the overflow menu button on the right side of the app bar as
shown below in the Biz Phone example.

Management (SAM) server for Spectralink
application configuration and other phone
management services not available through
an EMM.
Web API
The Web API app is used by developers to
interface with external services and provide
links to frequently used websites.
Some Administrative Details
Versity is a “managed device”, meaning that it is controlled by the facility in which it is deployed.
Limitations and allowances are tailored to the needs of the facility and may not be exactly what
you are used to when using a consumer-grade smartphone or other Android device. That said, if
you have used a computer, a browser or e-mail, you will find most of the functionality very
familiar. Go ahead and explore what the device can do and if you encounter problems or have
questions, contact your on-site facility administrator.

Software updates
Unlike consumer-grade Android smartphones, Versity updates are managed by the system
administrator, not directly by Google. Periodically, your smartphone checks in with an
administrative server and will download an update, if available.
You will see a notification that an update is available and then a prompt to reboot the
smartphone to apply the update. The next time the smartphone “checks in” with the server, the
server records that the software has been downloaded and applied.
An administrator can see what software version is being used by your device and when it was
updated. An administrator may be able to force an update in which case active applications will
close and the phone will reboot.
Updates to applications are also managed by the administrator. On-site software controls what
applications can be installed on the smartphone and when (and if) they are updated. Only one
version of an app can be run at a time, so an app can change features with no prior warning
because it was just updated.
Notifications
Notifications are produced and controlled by the Android operating system and by the apps that
have been installed by the system administrator. If you have questions about any particular
notification, please contact your system administrator for more information.
Some notification options can be controlled by the user. Go to Settings> Apps & notifications
and explore your options.
Administrative Control
Versity features, app access, and the user experience can be fully or partially controlled by the
phone system administrator. In some cases, an administrator may elect to set certain
parameters corporately and leave others controllable by the user. When a user looks at a
settings menu, those options that are corporately controlled are grayed out and not available to
be changed by the user.
Options that are under the user’s control are either not grayed out or are tagged with a “User
controlled” hint. When you see that hint---unless the administrator has blocked access to all
Android settings---the user can go into the Android menus and change the setting to a user
preference. Look at the user restrictions in the Device app for a full list of options that an
administrator may control by managing that app.

Chapter 2: Before Using Your
Smartphone
When you first receive your smartphone, you need to fully charge the Battery Pack in order to
maximize the Battery Pack's storage capacity and lifespan. You may also need to familiarize
yourself with turning the smartphone on and off and learn about the various audio options
available to you. Additionally, your facility may have security standards that require you to enter
unique credentials so that the smartphone will correctly register. This chapter covers these
subjects.
Spectralink: For best performance (95/96-Series only)
Always keep a charged battery in the phone when in storage or not in use.
Note: Do I need to enter a password?
Many facilities require a password to access the smartphone’s applications while
providing minimal usefulness in the meantime. During this interim, the phone may
ring and be answered, an emergency call can be placed, and certain notifications
may appear. User preferences will not be available until the swipe, pin, pattern or
password is entered. Additionally, critical alerts from custom applications will not
display until the security swipe/pin/pattern/password is entered.
Check with your administrator if you have any questions about Versity security.
Caution: Do not use “Battery Saver” mode
Android’s “Battery Saver” mode curtails functionality in order to conserve battery
life. In Battery Saver mode, features that you rely on may be lost.
If you require more than one charge per shift, contact your system administrator for
a second battery.
Charging the Battery Pack for the First Use
Take a moment to learn how to charge your smartphone properly. It is critical to fully charge the
Battery Pack before the first use of the smartphone in order to maximize the Battery Pack's
storage capacity and lifespan. The Battery Pack is fully charged when the Battery life indicator
becomes solid.

Caution: Take care of battery contacts
Although Versity is a rugged smartphone platform, when the battery is removed
from the handset, the battery contacts within the handset can be damaged. Take
special care to not touch, compress or come into contact with the battery contacts
in any way or damage may occur.
Power User: Third party accessories
Third party accessories such as keyboards or a mouse may not work if an incorrect
cable is used to connect to the phone’s USB port. When buying these products,
look for “Benson Approved” and “OTG” cables. Any cables or adapters must be
USB certified and built to the USB C specification.
Using the provided wall supply or our accessory chargers and using certified USB cables are
critical for this to work well. Versity also supports various quick charging schemes. How fast the
charging device actually charges Versity will vary depending on capability of the source and the
temperature.

Turning your Smartphone On
If the Battery Pack has adequate charge, your Versity will turn on when the power button is
pressed.
Generally, your system administrator will deploy your smartphone with multiple other
smartphones. In this case, your system administrator will configure the smartphone parameters
beforehand so that the smartphone will register with the system and be ready to use as a
telephony device when you turn it on. If your smartphone does not work when you turn it on,
contact your system administrator.
1 Press and hold the power button to turn on the smartphone. Versity will vibrate. Let go
when the first screen displays.
2 Allow the screens to cycle through a bootup screen, the Spectralink splash screen and
Android screens.
3 The lock screen may appear and display the lock icon and a prompt to enter a PIN or
Passcode. Notifications may appear. The default lock method is swipe. For Versity 92
Series: swipe from the bottom towards the top of the screen.

Turning your Smartphone Off
To turn your smartphone off
1 Press and hold the power button. The Power off popup appears:
2 Tap Power off. The phone will shut down.
Warning: Powering off
Use the power off process to close down Versity. Do not remove the Battery Pack
to power off the smartphone.
For Versity 95/96-Series if you need to replace the Battery Pack, use the Hot Swap
technique described below or power off the smartphone and then remove the
Battery Pack.
Turning off the Screen
Turn off the screen without turning off the phone by briefly pressing the Power button. Do this
before storing the smartphone in a pocket or other place where it could be bumped or pressed
in such a way as to accidentally activate a button.
Hot Swap Battery (95/96-Series)
The Spectralink Hot Swap feature is intended to provide short term power continuity during an
active swap of the battery. During an active swap, minimum power is provided to allow for the
phone to remain on. Active use of the phone or anything that increases the draw of power
during an active swap may, in certain situations, cause the phone to power off.
Have a fresh battery handy before starting the operation.
How to do a Battery Hot Swap
1 Remove the battery.
The screen will display a message that you have 60 seconds to replace the battery
before the phone starts to shut down.

2 Insert a new battery.
If the replacement battery is too low…
You may attempt to replace the current battery with another one that is discharged. If so, you
will be alerted that the new battery is too low and the phone will shut down. Find a fully charged
battery to continue.
Note: Auto rotate disabled during Hot Swap
If the screen is rotated to landscape mode before doing a Hot Swap, it will change
to portrait mode during the swap and can return to landscape when the new battery
is mounted.
Unlocking Versity
In most facilities, you will require a swipe/PIN/pattern/password or access card before you can
use Versity. Contact your system administrator for additional instructions.
If a PIN, pattern or password is required, after you swipe the slide lock, the
PIN/Pattern/Password lock screen will open. Again, swipe the pattern or enter the passcode to
open the home screen.
