SR900 — How to Copyright © 2016 by The S.E.A. Group 2
Fit the SR900
Sling the lower neck strap around your neck.
Hold the mask up to your chin.
Cup the mask up, until it covers your mouth and
nose.
Hold the mask in position, pull the upper head
harness up and over your head. Make sure the
upper strap sits on the crest of your head.
If necessary, unlock the buckles at your neck and
tighten or loosen the tension of the strap.
Even out the tension of the head harness by
hooking your fingers around the LOWER strap
and pulling outwards a few times. This will
increase the lift of the upper strap, supporting
the weight of the filter.
IMPORTANT:
Never pull the head harness over a hard hat, ear
muffs, goggles, cap or other head gear – the
harness must be fitted DIRECTLY on your head.

Fit the filter holder
Insert the bayonet fitting of the filter holder into
the corresponding fitting in the mask, then turn
¼ turn clockwise until it snaps securely into
place.
To remove the filter holder, turn it ¼ turn anti-
clockwise and pull away.
1/4 turn
Fit a filter
Make sure the filter is facing the correct way
(arrow pointing towards the respirator).
Place the filter inside the rubber fitting ring of
the mask.
Ensure that the flange of the filter fits into the
groove all the way around the rubber fitting.
Fit a pre-filter to the front of the main filter or
combined filters.
SR900 — How to Copyright © 2016 by The S.E.A. Group 4
Fit a pre-filter
IMPORTANT:
A pre-filter should ALWAYS be attached to the
front of any main filter, whether a particle or a
gas filter.
Place a pre-filter in the pre-filter holder.
Snap the pre-filter holder with the pre-filter onto
the front of the main filter.
Check for leakage
Make sure the mask is completely assembled
with all parts intact, including filter, pre-filter and
pre-filter holder
Fit the respirator on your face.
Cover the centre hole in the pre-filter holder
with the palm of your hand.
Breathe in and hold your breath for about ten
seconds.
SR900 — How to Copyright © 2016 by The S.E.A. Group 5
The mask should collapse against your face and
remain collapsed until you breathe out again.
If the mask returns quickly to its normal shape,
there may be a leakage problem. If so, repeat
the leakage test. If the same problem happens
again, see your supervisor.
Remove a filter
Pull the rubber tab at the bottom of the filter
flange and peel back the rubber rim until the
filter is free.
Wear your breathing hose
There are two types of breathing hose: single
and twin.
Most SR900 configurations can use either the
single or twin hose.
You can use the hose as is, but if your work
involves heat, sparks or open flames, you may
choose to cover the hose with a protective
flame-resistant cover. Both the single and twin
hoses can be protected in this way. Slip the
protective cover around the hose. If required,
fasten with the Velcro straps.
Whatever breathing device you use, the single
hose is designed to be worn on either side of the
body. The twin hose is worn on both sides of
your neck.
SR900 — How to Copyright © 2016 by The S.E.A. Group 6
The nozzle end of the breathing hose connects
to one of the following breathing devices:
•Remote Filter Holder
•SR500 PAPR
•SR700 particle PAPR
•SR507 supplied-air regulator (NOTE: for
single hose only)
The valve end of the breathing hose connects to
the SR900 respirator.
Fit the hose to the mask
Insert the bayonet fitting of the valve end of the
breathing hose into the bayonet fitting of the
mask. Angle the hose connector until the two
fittings match. Then turn the hose connector ¼
turn clockwise until it snaps into position.
The same procedure applies to both the single
and the twin hose.
To remove the hose, turn it anticlockwise and
pull out the hose connector.

Fit the hose to a device
The nozzle end of the hose can be connected to
various devices:
•Remote Filter Holder
•SR500 PAPR
•SR700 particle PAPR
•SR507 compressed air attachment (with
single hose only)
The procedure is the same for all devices:
•Make sure the O-ring at the tip of the
hose is intact.
•Insert the hose into the hole in the
device, fitting the two protruding lugs
into the corresponding slots of the
bayonet fitting.
•Turn the hose clockwise until it locks
securely.
To remove the hose from the device, turn the
connector anticlockwise and pull out.
IMPORTANT: Before using the SR900 respirator
with any of the devices listed above, make sure
you are familiar with the device and know how
to use it correctly. Please consult the appropriate
training modules for the respective device.
Fit to SR307 supplied-air
regulator
Attach the SR307 connection adaptor as you
would a filter.
Connect the filter adapter just as you would a
filter.
SR900 — How to Copyright © 2016 by The S.E.A. Group 8
IMPORTANT: Before using the SR900 respirator
with the SR307 supplied-air regulator, make sure
you are familiar with the regulator and know
how to use it correctly. Please consult the SR307
training modules.
Use the Remote Filter Holder
The remote filter holder lets you wear the filter
around your back on a waist belt.
This may be of benefit if the work you perform
involves heat, sparks, spray or splashes.
Fit the filter holder to the belt attachment. The
square flange on the holder fits into the square
hole on the attachment. Slide the two parts
together until the locking tongue locks into
position.
You may choose to wear the filter holder
horizontally or vertically. In either case, ensure
that the hose connector is located on the upper
side of the belt.
Fit a main filter or combined filters, pre-filter and
pre-filter holder into the rubber filter holder, as
described earlier.
CAUTION: You may wish to remove the
inhalation membrane to minimise breathing
resistance. However, it is very important to
reinsert the membrane if you want to use the
filter holder in other configurations.
SR900 — How to Copyright © 2016 by The S.E.A. Group 9
Match up the bayonet fittings on the filter holder
and the Remote Filter Holder and turn ¼ turn
clockwise until it locks into position.
1/4 turn
Fit a single or twin breathing hose between the
SR900 respirator and the Remote Filter Holder,
fit the mask to your face and tighten the
waistbelt.
Prepare for use in welding
The remote filter holder is ideal for use in
welding.
When the assembled equipment is fitted, it is
placed at your back directly behind you. This
helps keep the filter intake away from all welding
hazards, such as heat, sparks and toxic metal
fumes that may be released in the welding
process.
The remote filter holder gives the SR900
respirator a much more shallow profile, enabling
it to easily fit inside most welding hoods or
shields.
A spark-proof and flame-resistant cover is
available for protecting the breathing hose from
heat, the arc or flame, and flying sparks during
the welding.
Covers are available for both both the single and
twin hoses.
Simply slip the cover around the hose. If
required, fasten with the Velcro strips.
SR900 — How to Copyright © 2016 by The S.E.A. Group 10
A spark-catching metal mesh can be inserted
into the pre-filter holder, preventing any sparks
from hitting the pre-filter or main filter.
Simply fit the mesh into the pre-filter holder
before inserting the pre-filter.
Give the SR900 a QUICK CLEAN
IMPORTANT:
Only a CLEAN respirator can provide effective
protection. The mask should be cleaned and
checked after each use — a simple procedure
that takes only a minute.
Cleaning may be done with warm soapy water
and a soft cloth, or by using Sundstrom’s special
sterilised hygienic cleaning tissues that keep
your mask soft and flexible.
NEVER USE SOLVENTS OR ABRASIVES.
Clean the outside of the respirator, checking for
cracks or other damage.
Wipe the inside of the mask, including any
‘nooks and crannies’ inside the respirator.
Make sure the face rim and chin cup of the mask
are thoroughly clean.
Replace the pre-filter with a new one.
Perform a THOROUGH CLEAN
Give the respirator a quick clean, as described
above.
SR900 — How to Copyright © 2016 by The S.E.A. Group 11
Remove the filter and wipe the inside of the
filter holder. Pay special attention to the groove
in the filter rim when cleaning.
Remove the protective caps from the exhaust
valves. Pull out the membranes and wipe clean.
Wipe the valve seats before refitting the valves
and replacing the protective caps.
It is of critical importance that both membranes
and seats are clean and intact. No dirt or grime
must remain, and the parts must not have any
cracks, tears or other damage.
Remove the inhalation membrane from the filter
holder or hose attachment. Clean the membrane
and the valve seat. Replace.
Make sure ALL valves are properly fitted. Put the
respirator to your face and draw a few deep
breaths to make sure that the valves are in good
working order.
If the headstrap is very dirty, detach it, clean and
dry separately before re-attaching.
Tip: use a toothbrush to clean the strap.
