I. NIOSH Approval Limitations
Note: All cautions and limitations do not
apply to all applications. Refer to the NIOSH
matrix approval label insert (add part num-
ber) to verify the applicable cautions and
limitations.
Chemical cartridge APR application:
A- Not for use in atmospheres containing less than
19.5 percent oxygen.
B- Not for use in atmospheres immediately dangerous
to life or health.
C- Do not exceed maximum use concentrations es-
tablished by regulatory standards.
H- Follow established cartridge and canister change
out schedules or observe ESLI to ensure that
cartridges and canisters are replaced before
breakthrough occurs.
I- Contains electrical parts that may cause an ignition
source in flammable or explosive atmospheres.
J- Failure to properly use and maintain this product
could result in injury or death.
L- Follow the manufacturer’s User’s Instructions for
changing canisters.

FF- Respirators are to be fit tested prior to use with the
heaviest cartridges, canisters, filters and/or acces-
sories intended to be used. Fit testing should also
be conducted while wearing all personal protective
equipment intended to be used. See User’s Instruc-
tions for fit test requirements.

The following are NIOSH Cautions and Limitations
for PAPR applications:

II. General respirator use limitations
Full-face Air-Purifying Respirators (APR) are designed,
tested and government approved to provide respira-
tory protection to a properly trained person in certain
hazardous atmospheres.
The wearer must not enter a hazardous atmosphere
that meets or exceeds the following limitations:
Maximum Use Concentrations (MUC)
a. 50 times the exposure limit (TWA) for the con-
taminant present.
b. Immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH)
concentrations for the contaminant.
c. The limitations outlined in the applicable NIOSH
approval.
d. Any applicable limitations contained in the standards
established by a regulatory agency (such as federal,
state and local agencies) with jurisdiction over the
wearer.
WARNING
This respirator cannot remove all the
con¬taminants from a hazardous atmosphe-
re. Pay close attention to all Maximum Use
Concentrations (MUC), Limitations and other
restrictions.
In addition to these Maximum Use Concentrations
(MUC), Limitations, and the warnings and cautions
placed in the text, the following general safety points
must be read and understood by everyone intending
to use the Sundström respirator.
• DonotuseforpaintscontainingIsocyanates.
• Donotuseforprotectionagainstfumigants.
• This respirator is designed to be used only by
TRAINED QUALIFIED PERSONNEL.
• Respiratorselectionshallbebaseduponfullknowl-
edge of, and professional evaluations of, the con-
taminants and their maximum content in the subject
atmosphere.
• Air-purifyingrespiratorsDONOTsupplyoxygenand
MUSTNOTBEUSEDinatmospherescontainingless
than 19.5 % oxygen by volume.
• ThisrespiratorMUSTNOTBEUSEDforprotection
against any substance that may cause an allergic
reaction, that contain Isocyanates or other restricted
contaminants or that lack adequate warning proper-
ties.
• Air-purifyingrespiratorsshallnotbeusedforstructual
fire fighting.
• DONOTUSEthis respiratorforprotectioninany
atmospheres that are, or may become immediately
Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH), or in conditions
that pose an immediate threat by air contaminants
that are likely to have adverse delayed effects on life
or health.
• ThisrespiratorMUSTNOTBEUSEDforprotection
against substances that lack adequate warning
properties.
• Thisrespiratorisnotapprovedforprotectionfrom
abrasiveblasting,includingsandblastingoperations.
• Thisrespiratormustbeequippedwiththeappropri-
ate NIOSH approved air-purifying filters, chemical
cartridges, or filter/cartridge combinations that are
properly installed on the respirator.
• Thisrespiratormustbeproperlyfittedtotheindividual
who will wear it. Do not use the Sundström respirator
if you have any hair growth between the skin and
facepiece sealing surface such as stubble, beard
growth,beard,moustache, or sideburns which cross
the respirator surface ( see OSHA standard 29 CFR
1910.134 Appendix A.I .A.9 for further clarification).
Do not use this respirator if scars or other physical
characteristics may interfere with a proper fit of the
respirator.
• Alwaysreadcartridgeandfilterapprovallabelsprior
to use. Air-purifying elements designed only for
protection against airborne particles MUST NOT
BE USED for protection against vapors or gases.
Air-purifying elements designed only for protection
against vapors or gases MUST NOT BE USED for
protection against airborne particulates.
• Theusefulservicelifeoftheair-purifyingelements
will vary with the concentration and nature of the
contaminant(s) and the activity of the respirator
wearer. Replace the air-purifying elements when you
detect any indication of damage or loss of effective-
ness, or when instructed by competent authority.
• Ifyouexperienceanyoneofthefollowingdanger
signalsleavethe hazardousareaimmediately!Return
to fresh air, and seek assistance.
a. Breathing difficulty.
b. Dizziness or nausea.
c. You smell or taste the contaminants.
d. Any other noticeable physical problem.
If the appropriate protection is not specified by a com-
petent authority, or should you feel uncertain about
the proper application, selection, or maintenance of
this equipment, consult your supervisor, safety profes-
sional, or local occupational health organization. Do
not enter a suspected hazardous area. For answers

III. Introduction
The Sundström SR 200 Full-face Air-purifying
Respira¬tor (APR) has been tested and approved by
NIOSH to provide the approved level of respiratory
protection to a user.
Provides limited eye protection (ANSI Z87.1-2010).
The respirator consists of an outer mask with polycar-
bonate visor that covers the user’s face, an integrated
inner mask with inhalation and exhalation valves that
covers the user’s nose, mouth and chin, a rubber strap
head harness with 6 mounting points that hold the
respirator in place, and a filter adapter for connecting
standard Sundström protective elements.
The inhaled air flows through a protective element and
inhalation membrane into the inner mask. Part of the
air flows past the inside of the visor in order to prevent
misting. The exhaled air is discharged from the face
piece through two exhalation valves. A laminated glass
visor, a test adapter and spectacle frames for fitting
corrective lenses are available as accessories.
This manual is divided into ten sections of equal
importance. It will provide a respirator user with the
basic information to properly use, inspect, don, doff,
and perform maintenance for the Sundström respirator.
This manual provides only the basic elements of a
completerespiratorprogram. Awell-designedrespirator
programalso includes fit testing, proper documentation
and active management by your local safety profes-
sional. All regulations and recommendations found in
OSHA documents, especially 29 CFR 1910.134; EPA
Standards; American National Standards Institutes
(ANSI) Standard Z88.2; and all applicable state, pro-
vincial and local regulations shall be referenced in the
complete safety program.
This respirator should not be used without thorough
understandingof all the components and their purpose.
Read this entire booklet carefully and refer to it wherever
aquestion arises. You must alsosatisfactorily complete
all regulatory and local training requirements before
entering a hazardous atmosphere.
Failure to read, understand and carefully follow
these instructions prior to using this product may
result in personal injury or death.

Selection of protective elements
The protective elements approved for use on the Sund-
ström Full-face Respirator are (4) chemical cartridges
and (1) particulate filter. A pre-filter is also approved for
optional use with all protective elements.
You can identify various protective elements by the
color and protection designation of the NIOSH filter/
cartridge label.

Chemical Cartridges
Eachchemical cartridgeisdesigned toproviderespirato-
ryprotectionagainst specific contaminants. A chemical
cartridge absorbs and/or adsorbs specific vapors and
gases from a contaminated atmosphere. This process
continues until the sorbent becomes saturated and al-
lows the contaminant to break through. OSHA requires
a chemical cartridge change out schedule based on
workplace aerosol concentration and no longer relies
on breakthrough sensory detection to initiate chemical
cartridge changing.
Particulate filters
Filters provide protection against particulates. All
Sundström particulate filters trap and hold particles in
the filtering media. As the amount of the captured con-
taminant in the media increases, breathing resistance
also increases. Replace the filter when the change in
breathing resistance becomes noticeable.
The P100 filter is 99.97 % efficient against all particulate
aerosols.
Sundström Safety has conducted degradation testing
of our P100 filter. Our test results show that even after
an extensive period exposed to oil based contaminants
this filter will not degrade.
Combination Protective Elements
An appropriate chemical cartridge and P100 filter can
be combined to provide protection from a combination
of certain vapors, gases and particulates.
Pre-filter
The Sundström pre-filter is not an protective element
and can never be used as primary protection or as a
substitute for the P100.
It is designed to prevent nuisance particulates from
reaching the protective elements. This increases the
life span of the primary protective element.
FOR USE WITH SR 500 POWERED AIR-
PURIFYING RESPIRATOR (PAPR)
SR 200 Full-face respirator are approved for use with
SR500 PAPR fan unit assembly.Referto the NIOSH ap-
provallabel for approvedconfigurations P/NL27-0121.
In addition to this manual, the SR 500 manual P/N
L67-0121 must be carefully read and followed by all
persons who have, or will have, the responsibility for
using or servicing the respirator.
V User Training and Instructions
WARNING
Do not complete the user training
without reading and understanding all in-
structions in this booklet.
This training section is designed for the user and their
safety manager. It contains the minimum information
required to safely instruct users on how to don, doff,
test, and change protective elements for the Sund-
ström respirator. This training procedure is included
as a supplement to the instructions contained in the
remainder of this manual.
Local conditions may require additional instructions.
Sundström encourages the safety professional re-
sponsible for the respiratory program to add all local
information possible to increase worker safety and to
supplement this basic text. You can obtain an Instruc-
tors Guide from your nearest Sundström Distributor.
1. WHY USE RESPIRATORY PROTECTION?
A. Why is breathing protection necessary?
Breathing protection is necessary whenever you
are in an atmosphere that could injure your health.
Depending on the substance present in the contami-
nated atmosphere you could be at risk of:
LUNG DAMAGE
Bronchitis, edema, pneumonia
DAMAGE TO VITAL ORGANS
Kidneys, liver, brain
CANCER
PERMANENT DISABILITY
asthma, silicosis, asbestosis or emphysema
or at worst
DEATH

WARNING
Do not enter a hazardous or unknown at-
mosphere without asking your safety profes-
sional what type of protection is required.
Use all the protective equipment and wear it
properly. At the first sign of trouble exit the
hazardous area, seek help and report the
problem to the proper authority.
B. What is a full face respirator?
The Sundström full face respirator consists of an
outer mask with polycarbonate or glass visor that
covers your face, an integrated inner mask with in-
halation and exhalation valves that covers your nose,
mouth and chin, a rubber strap head harness with 6
mounting points that hold the respirator in place, and
a filter adapter for connecting standard Sundström
protective elements.
C. What type of protection will a full face respi-
rator provide?
A properly fitted full-face respirator can protect you
against specific levels of some:
Particulates
Gases and Vapors
Viruses and Bacteria
Mold and Fiber
BUT full-face respirators SHOULD NOT be used:
In oxygen deficient areas
In atmospheres Immediately Dangerous to Life and
Health (IDLH)
When the contaminants are unknown.
WARNING
Know your Maximum Use Limitations and
follow the instructions of your safety pro-
fessional.
D. How do I know which filter or cartridge to
use?
Your safety professional is responsible for providing
you information concerning what filter, cartridge or
combination will provide adequate protection for the
hazards at your worksite. You can identify various 10
protective elements by the color of the NIOSH label.

The NIOSH/DHHS approval label for each product
lists limitations and requirements. All current NIOSH/
DHHS labels can be found in the respirator box
printed on a sheet titled Section “X NIOSH/DHHS
LABELS” of this manual. The Sundström P100 filter
can be combined with each chemical cartridge to
give the user combined vapor, gas and particulate
protection.
E. What does the pre-filter do?
The Sundström pre-filter can only be used with a
cartridge or P100 filter to reduce nuisance dusts.
This extends the life of the protective element by
capturing these large particulates, preventing prema-
ture loading of the primary protective elements. This
pre-filter is not a protective element.
WARNING
The Sundström pre-filter is a thin filter that
does not have any printing on either side. Do
not use this filter as a protective element.
F. What if I can’t smell anything, or I don’t mind
the smell?
The physiological damage from some contaminants
can be long term and many take months to appear.
The danger from these hazards may be masked by
an unfamiliar or even pleasant odor. A certain smell
or odor may not bother you, or cause you discom-
fort, but the contaminant can still be hazardous.
G. When do I change the filter or cartridge?
Chemical Cartridge – Loss of protection is
frequently detected when the user experiences
BREAKTHROUGH.
If you experience any one of the following danger
signals leave the hazardous area immediately, return
to fresh air. Check your respirator, and replace the
protective element if necessary: and seek any neces-
sary assistance.
a. Breathing difficulty, dizziness or nausea, smell
b. Dizziness or nausea
c. You smell or taste the contaminants
d. Any other noticeable physical effect.

If you smell, feel or taste anything unusual leave
the contaminated area, check your respirator, and
replace the protective element if necessary. In some
atmospheres breakthrough may be hard to detect
or may occur too late to provide you a safe exit
from the contaminated atmosphere. An air-purifying
respirator is not appropriate for use. However under
certain conditions, the chemical cartridges can be
used but must be changed after a specific exposure
time. This schedule is set by a competent authority
and controlled by your safety professional.
WARNING
Warning. An exhausted chemical cartridge
will allow hazardous fumes or vapors to pass
through to the user who may not notice any
change in breathing resistance. Follow local
procedures and all warnings contained in the
users manual.
Filters– Filters clean the air of particles bycapturing the
solid particles and allowing breathable air to enter the
respirator. As the filter loads up with these particulates
inhalation becomes uncomfortable. When you detect
increasedinhalation resistance,leavethecontaminated
area and change the pre-filter, or if necessary, the
protective filter.
Time use restrictions may also apply to some filters
when efficiency declines or when they are exposed to
specific contaminants. Filters must be replaced every
time these limits are reached.
Pre-filter – This inexpensive nuisance pre-filter is used
witha cartridge or P100 filter.Whenbreathingresistance
increases change the pre-filter first. If the resistance
does not drop change the protective element.
1. Changing the protective elements
A. Installation / removal
Select the appropriate protection. Remain in a safe
atmosphere and select the proper cartridge and ap-
propriate filter.
B. Assembling the cartridge, P100 filter combi-
nation. Fig. 2.
• PlacetheP100filterontopofthecartridge.Grasp
both protective elements.
• SqueezeharduntilyouheartheP100snapontothe
cartridge.
• Pullonthefilterandcartridgetocheckthattheyare
properly connected.
• Placeapre-filterintothepre-filterholder.
• Snapthepre-filterholderontothefilter.
• Checktoseethatitisfirmlyattachedtothecartridge
or filter.
Installing the protective element into the respirator.
• Holdtheprotectiveelementinyourhandwiththe
arrows on the label pointing towards the face. Insert
one part of the large lip of the element into the filter
adapter flange.
• Grabtheflangewithyourfingerandpullthelipof
the adapter flange around the protective element
until the entire protective element is seated inside
the filter adapter.
• Squeezethetopedgeoftheelementandthebottom
edge of the respirator filter adapter together until the
filter adapter flange is seated against the edge of the
cartridge.
• Makesurethatthegasketintherespiratorconnector
is in place, screw the filter adapter with the protective
element onto the respirator connector.
Carefully tighten the filter adapter by hand to prevent
damage to the thread and to ensure a good seal
against the gasket.
C. Removing the protective
elements from the respirator.
• Screwoffthefilteradapterwiththeprotectiveelement
from the respirator connector.
• Onthetopoftherespiratorfilteradapterflangeis
a small tab that touches the side of the protective
element.
• Grasptheprotectiveelementwithonehandandthis
tab with the finger and thumb of the other hand.
• Peelbackonthetabwhilepullingonthecartridge.
• Ifyouareusingastackedcartridgeandfilter,you
must now remove the filter from the cartridge.
• Takeacoin,orsimilaritem,andplaceitinthespace
between the lower lip on the P100 Filter and the small
raised plastic tab on the side of the cartridge. Twist
the coin until the filter pops off the cartridge. Fig. 3.
2. Inpection prior to use
Before donning the respirator always perform
the following checks.
• Ensurethattherespiratoriscleananddry.
• Checktherespirator,valves,harnessandvisorfor
cracks, missing parts, and other defects.
• Checkthattheappropriatechemicalcartridge,filter
or combination is installed properly.
3. Donning/Fit check/Doffing
A. Donning
• Removeanyhood,glassesorearprotectionfrom
head.

• Slackenthefourelasticstrapsbymovingthestrap
holders forward at the same time pulling the straps.

• Movetheheadharnessupwards,placeyourchinin
the facepiece chin support and pull the head harness
over your head. Fig. 5.
• Tensiontheelasticstrapsinpairsbypullingthefree
strap ends towards the rear. Fig. 6.
• Adjustthelengthsoftheupperpairofstrapsandfix
by means of the buckles.
• Adjustthefitofthemaskonyourface,sothatitfits
firmly but comfortably.
• Performafitcheck.
B. Fit Check
WARNING
A proper fit check must be successfully
completed each time the respirator is worn.
Failure to achieve a proper face-to-respi-
rator seal before you enter a hazardous at-
mosphere may result in little or no respiratory
protection.
• Installaprotectiveelement.
• Snapthepre-filterholderontotheprotectiveelement.
• Donningtherespirator.
• Placethepalmofyourhandlightlyovertheholeon
the pre-filter holder to make it tight. Fig. 20.
NOTE! Do not push so hard that the respirator´s
shape is affected.
• Inhale gently, the respirator should pull inward on
the face.
• Holdyourbreath,therespiratorshouldremaincol-
lapsed on the face.
• Removethepalmofyourhandfromthepre-filter
holder.
• Breathenormally.
If any leakage is detected, check the inhalation and
exhalation valves or adjust the straps of head harness.
Repeat the fit check until there is no leakage.
C. Doffing
• Slackenthefourelasticstrapsinpairsbymovingthe
strap holder forward. The two inelastic straps need
not be released. Fig. 7.
• Pulltheheadharnessforwardoveryourheadand
remove the respirator.
• Decontaminate, clean and store respirator as
required.
SR500 PAPR application

VI Cleaning and storage
A. Disassembly
• Removethefilteradapterwithprotectiveelement.
• Removethecoversfromtheexhalationvalvesand
remove the membranes (two).
• Removetheinhalationmembranes(three).
• Removetheheadharness.
• Ifnecessaryremovethevisor.SeesectionVII,A.
B. Cleaning and assembling
A dirty respirator causes reduced protection.
A written program for cleaning and sanitizing should be
established and followed. This program should include
all federal and local requirements.
• Clean with warm soapy water or other respirator
cleaner and a soft brush, lint free cloth or sponge.
Do not exceed 104 °F ( 40 °C). Never use solvents
for cleaning.
• Sanitizetherespirator.Useanyapprovedsanitizing
or disinfecting agent or a solution of 2 tablespoons
of household bleach mixed in one gallon of water
(50-PPM chlorine); or 1 teaspoon of tincture of iodine
(50-PPM iodine) in one gallon of water. Immerse the
respirator in the solution for at least 2 minutes.
• Rinsethoroughly.
• Checktheconditionoftherespiratorandalltheparts.
Replace any damaged or defective item.

Store the respirator, filters and cartridges in a clean,
cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

month, year, e.g. May 2012.
VII Spare parts
Use only genuine Sundström parts. Don´t modify the
equipment.The use of “pirate parts”orany modifications
mayreducethe protectivefunction andwill compromise
the approvals granted to the product.
A. To change the visor
The visor is mounted in a groove running around the
visor opening of the outer mask and is held in place
by one upper and one lower frame half.
• Use a 2.5 mm Allen key to remove the two
screws holding the frame halves together.

• Carefullyremovetheupperframehalf.Fig.9.
• Carefullyprythetoppartofthemaskoffthevisor,
and remove the visor from the lower groove. Fig.
10,11. Take this opportunity to clean the groove, if
necessary.
• Markingsaremadetoshowthecentresofthevisor,
frame halves and mask. Fig. 12. Press the new visor
intothe groove,making sure that the centremarkings
are in line. To make assembly easier, coat the slot
with a soap solution or similar liquid.
• Carefullyprisethetophalfofthefacepieceoverthe
visor, and make sure that the visor is in the groove
in the facepiece. Fig. 10.
• Prise the upper frame half, making sure that the
centre markings are in line. Fig. 12.
• Fitthescrewsandtightenthemalternatelyuntilthe
two halves of the frame are firmly in contact. Fig. 8.
• Performafitcheck.
B. To change the inhalation membranes (three)
• Onemembraneisinthecentreoftheinnermaskon
a fixed dowel.
Prise off the membrane and fit a new membrane.

• Twomembranesarefitted,i.e.oneoneachinside
of the inner mask. The dowels for these membranes
are removable and should be changed whenever the
membranes are changed.
• Priseoffthemembranesanddowels.
• Prisethenewmembranesontothedowels.Fig.14.
• The membranes should rest on the larger
flange, i.e. thread the dowel with the mem-
brane from the inside of the facepiece, through
the valve seat, with the smaller flange first.

C. To change the exhalation membranes (two)
The exhalation membranes are mounted on a fixed
dowel on the inside of the valve covers on each side
of the outer facepiece. The covers should be changed
whenever the membranes are changed.

check that the membranes are in contact with the
valve seats all round.

D. To change the head harness
The head harness can be ordered as a spare part only
as a complete harness.
• Snap the strap holders of the head harness off the
facepiece strap mountings. Fig. 18, 19.
• Checkthatthestrapsarenottwistedandfitthenew
head harness.
VIII Warranty
Supplier warrants to each purchaser of a Product who
is an end-user of such Product that the product is free
from defects in material and workmanship, ordinary
wear and tear excepted, for one year from date of
purchase by such end-user. Further, Supplier warrants
that the Product conforms to the NIOSH standards in
effect on that date of sale. Supplier’s sole obligation,
and each end-users sole and exclusive remedy under
this warranty, shall be limited to replacement of any
Product covered by this warranty which proves in viola-
tion of such warranty during the period of effectiveness
thereof. The warranty shall not apply to any Product
which has been altered, misused, subjected to an ac-
cident, used contrary to Supplier’s specifications and
recommendations or used beyond it’s useful life or to
any Product whose packaging has been altered or
opened prior to purchase by the end-user. Supplier
makes no representations or warranties concerning
the application or effect of any international, federal,
state or local laws, ordinances, rules or regulations
which may now or hereafter pertain to the use or
operation of the Product. EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY
PROVIDED IN THIS PARAGRAPH, SUPPLIER MAKES
NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY
KIND, NATURE OR DESCRIPTION, EXPRESSED OR
IMPLIED, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY
WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS OF
ANY OF THE PRODUCTS FOR ANY PARTICULAR
PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND HEREBY
DISCLAIMS THE SAME.
In order to assert your rights under this warranty, please
return the Product to your vendor together with a written
description of the alleged defect and proof of purchase.
Your distributor will forward the Product to Supplier for
analysis of the validity of your claim.
