6.0 Baeries, charging and range
6.1 Baeries
Baeries are the power source for almost all of the modern
mobility products available today. The design of baeries used
in mobility products is signicantly dierent to the baeries
used to start a car for example. Car baeries are designed
to release a large amount of power over a short period of
me, whilst mobility baeries (commonly called deep cycle
baeries) release their power evenly, over a long period of
me. Therefore, due to the lower producon volumes and
increased technological requirements, mobility baeries are
typically more expensive.
Commonly two 12 volt baeries are used together in a
mobility product, giving a total voltage of 24 volts. The size
of the baery (e.g. its available power) is expressed in amps
per hour e.g. 70amp/hr. The higher the number, the bigger
the baery size, weight and, potenally, the greater the
distance you can travel. Sunrise Medical only t as standard
maintenance free baeries into these types of wheelchairs.
This type of baery uses a method of carrying the electrolyte
commonly referred to as ‘gel’, that is held within the baery
case. As the name implies, no maintenance is required other
than regular charging. You can safely transport this type of
baery without fear of acid spilling. Furthermore, they are
approved for transportaon on aircra, trains and ships.
CAUTION!
• Do not t car baeries to the wheelchair. Fit only deep cycle,
maintenance free mobility baeries.
• When the baeries are worn out, take them to the local
authority disposal point.
• Do not expose any part of the baery to direct heat (i.e.
naked ame, gas re).
• Be extra cauous to reduce the risk of dropping a metal tool
onto the baery. It could spark or short circuit the baery
or other electrical parts that may cause an explosion. Also
take o all personal metal eects and dangling objects when
working on the baery.
• Return the baeries back to Sunrise Medical or directly to
the baery manufacturer for recycling, when they no longer
hold charge.
• The baery terminals need to be checked regularly for
signs of corrosion. If any corrosion is apparent, then clean
the terminals completely and re-grease the terminal using
Vaseline petroleum jelly, not ordinary grease. Ensure that
the terminal nut and bolt, cable clip and exposed cable are
completely covered with jelly.
DANGER!
• Do not expose any part of the baery to direct heat (i.e.
naked ame, gas re).
• Be extra cauous to reduce the risk of dropping a metal tool
onto the baery. It could spark or short circuit the baery
or other electrical parts that may cause an explosion. Also
take o all personal metal eects and dangling objects
when working on the baery.
5.10 Seat Memory Posion (Sedeo Ergo only)
The control system on the Q700 M/F/R / Q700 M HD has 4
predened seat memory posions. Each memory locaon has
a set of factory seat posioning presets:
1. Relax funcon.
2. Lie down funcon.
3. Seat funcon
There is a 4th Memory posion (Personalised Posion) that
can be used as a customer-specic seat posion. The Seat
actuators are all working with a feedback system to track their
posions and movements.
This is important:
a. to reach the required memory posion.
b. to prevent mechanical clashes of the seat.
c. to operate the actuators especially towards the memory
posions in an ergonomic, smooth and safe way.
Although there is one free programmable seat Memory
posion, all predened Memory posions, if not suitable
for the user, can be changed and personalised to the needs
required.
The soware takes into account the range of the available
mechanical movements and also all safety aspects.
Seat funcon:
The seat funcon as described in no.3 in the text above is a
predened ‘standard’ seat posion.
It also creates the possibility to always return to this ‘standard’
seat posion when you are using other memory posions
(Relax or Lie down). This can be achieved by pulling the
joysck backwards.
