1Introduction
1.1 General Description
This device is a digital infrared surveillance camera with 3G communications. It uses
a highly sensitive Passive Infrared (PIR) motion sensor to detect movement to
trigger the capture of high quality pictures (up to 12M pixels) and/or record video
clips (720P HD). It can send pictures instantly to your mobile device or video (VGA
length 5 sec or 10 sec) to your e-mail via GPRS/WCDMA network. You’ll be alerted
when the camera is triggered or in accordance with custom settings.
It takes color pictures and videos in daylight. At night, the built-in infrared LEDs
enable the camera to photograph clear pictures and videos in grayscale.
The camera includes a 3” color LCD display screen, sound recorder, and a laser
pointer for aiming the camera at the photo target. A weather resistant housing
protects the unit from water and snow.
The camera can also be used as a portable digital camera.
1.2 Application
This camera can be used as an automatic surveillance device for recording
unexpected intrusion to homes, shops, schools, depots, offices, taxis, work sites, etc.
It can also be used as a trail camera for hunting or monitoring the movement of
animals. It can also be left unattended for weeks and months and save event
records automatically in digital format.
1.3 Camera components
Before using the camera, familiarize yourself with the camera controls and
components shown ion the following graphics.

1.4 Information display
When the power switch is in the SETUP position, the current status and
configuration will be displayed on screen.

Indicates the correct SIM card status.
The space available on the SD card should be a non-zero value.
1.5 Two-way communication
Set the SMS control submenu to ON to open the two-way communication feature.
With this setting, the camera will receive and respond to SMS commands and
Android app commands. You can also call the camera to listen to live audio and
retrieve live pictures.
This device can send pictures instantly to a mobile device across a WCDMA/GSM
network. You’ll be alerted when a picture or video is taken. The device sends MMS
or email message through a MMSC (MMS Service Center), or GPRS network. Before
using this feature, you must have MMS and GPRS service from a service provider.
The device supports following bands:
•GSM with 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz
•WCDMA with 850MHz, 900MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz

•The camera operates on 6 volts DC.
•Always install batteries according with the polarity indicated.
•You must install an SD card before using on the camera. The camera has
no internal memory for saving images or videos.
•Set the SD card write-protect switch to Unlock before installing the card.
•Do not install or remove the SD card when the camera is powered on.
•Make sure the SIM card supports the MMS and GPRS data function.
•After entering SETUP mode, allow approximately 10 ~ 20 seconds for
the camera to acquire a signal.
•Before using the SD card, format it with a computer or when it is in the
camera. SD cards formatted by other cameras may not be compatible
with the 940-GSM4.
•In SETUP mode, the device will shut off automatically after 3 minutes of
inactivity. Power on the camera again if you need to continue.

3.1 Power Supply
To internally power the device, install 8 AA batteries in the camera. Observe the
polarity indicated. Use high-performance alkaline or lithium batteries.
To externally power the device, use either a 6 volt external power supply or a 6 volt
solar panel. When these are used, the installed batteries can function as a backup
power supply if needed.
3.2 Configure the camera
Camera configuration is performed entirely with the BMC utility; no features within
the camera can be used to change the programming. To use this utility:
1. Insert the SD card for your camera into an SD card writer on a Microsoft
Windows PC. Format the card using the default format (FAT). Create a
directory on the card named “GSM”.
2. On the same computer, download the camera setup utility BMC-Config.zip
from www.supercircuits.com in the 940-GSM4 product page - Resources tab.
3. Unzip the BMC-Config utility file, and then open (run) the embedded
executable (*.exe) file.
4. In the initial window, select camera model MG983G-12M, and then click OK.

5. In the window that opens, do the following:
a. Step 1: Select your country and carrier for your SIM card.
b. Step 2: Enter your receiving phone number in “administrator number” and
receiving e-mail address in “Receive Email 1”.
c. Step 3: Click the Change Settings button to open the Camera Settings
window.

d. Step 5: In the upper frame, select the options you want to use. See
subsection 4.2 Configuration menu for more information about these
settings.
−Open the drop down lists to select the Language, Photo Size, Camera
Mode, Photo Burst, Send To option, Video Size, and Video Length. You can
also open Camera Position to assign an identifier to the camera.
−To use the Game Call option, set Game Call to ON, and then set the
associated options. You must add an audio file to play at the times you
specified.
−Set the camera clock date and time.
e. Step 6: In the lower frame, select the options you want to use. See
subsection 4.2 Configuration menu for more information about these
settings.
−Set the Work Hour option if needed. This option sets the device will be
functioning during the day.
−Set Time Lapse, PIR Trigger, PIR Interval and SMS Control as needed.
−In the Send Mode section, select the options you prefer to use. NOTE: If
you select Instant, you must set Max Number to a non-zero value to
receive photos and/or videos.
f. Step 7: Click OK to save your settings and return to the previous menu.
g. Step 8: Set the location in the PC of the SD card you are using with your

camera (use the directory and filename shown in the window above), then
click Save. Note that the drive (Z) of the card on your computer may not be
that shown in the screen capture above.
h. Step 9: Eject the SD card from your PC.
3.3 Insert SD card and SIM card
Install the SD card (with the configuration file) and a MMS and GPRS enabled SIM
card into the camera.
3.4 Manually send a MMS or GPRS photo
After you generate a configuration file in your SD card, slide the power switch to the
SETUP position. After the camera acquires signal and the SIM card icon
appears, press “SHOT” to take a photo manually.
Press “OK” to playback the photos. Use “▲” and “▼” to switch to the previous or next
photo. Press “MENU” and you can see a Send Phone [MMS] (Email GPRS/Call )
interface. Press “OK” to send out the MMS or Email. Within a few seconds, an MMS
will be sent to your phone or email address.
3.5 SMS Control
While the camera is in use, you can send the text
message “#T#” to the camera SIM card number to get a
spot image and use the smartphone application tools.
Note: You need to set SMS control to ON when using
an SMS command.
3.6 Smartphone applications
You can download the BGTools application for Android
from the Google play store, or for iPhones from iTunes.
See subsection 4.5, Use the smartphone application, on
page 17 for more information.

4.1 Work Mode
SETUP mode: Use to configure the camera or to playback photos or video clips.
ON mode: When motion is detected in the monitoring region, the camera will take
pictures or videos in accordance with the configuration
settings. After switching the camera to the ON position, the
motion indication LED (red) will blink for about 10 seconds.
During this time interval, you can position the camera for
automatic surveillance operation.
4.2 Configuration menu
Press the MENU button on the keyboard to open the configuration menu. The
menu will appear on the display.
Use the ▲or ▼keys to select the menu item; use the ►key to select different
options; use the ◄key to change to different item pages. Press OK to save the
settings.
4.2.1 Configuration setting

Description
Camera Mode
There are three camera modes: Photo, Video and
Pic+Video. Open the main menu to set the camera mode. If
you choose Pic+Video, the camera records a picture and a
video clip.
Photo Size
Choose the image size: 5MP, 10MP or 12MP.
Video Size
Choose the video size: 1280 x 720 or 640 x 480.
Photo Burst
This parameter sets the number of pictures taken for each
trigger in camera mode. Select “1 Photo” to “6 Photos”.
Video Length
Choose the duration of recording a video from 5 seconds to
180 seconds.

Set Clock
Set the camera date and time.
You can change the date and time by setting this parameter
when necessary, e.g., after every battery change. The date
format is month/day/year, the time format is hour: minute:
second.
Time Lapse
Time lapse is a feature where the camera will capture images
or videos at a preset time interval regardless of whether
motion is are detected. If the parameter is Off, then the time
lapse feature is disabled. Changing this parameter to a
non-zero value turns on the Time Lapse feature.
NOTE: If PIR Trigger is set to Off, then Time Lapse cannot be
set to Off.
PIR Trigger
Choose the sensitivity of the PIR. In high sensitivity mode the
camera is more easily triggered by motion; it takes more
pictures and/or records more videos. Use High sensitivity in
a room or environment with little interference, and Low
sensitivity outdoors, or in environment with lots of
interference like hot wind, smoke, near a window, etc. For
normal use, Normal sensitivity (default) is recommended.
PIR interval
This parameter indicates how long the PIR motion sensor will
be disabled after each triggering in ON mode. During this
time, the PIR will not react to motion.
The minimum interval, 0, causes the PIR to stay on.
Work Hour
Choose a time period for the camera to function. The camera
will wake at the time set and remain on for the duration. At
other times, the camera is in sleep mode to save power. If
Work Hour is OFF, the camera will always be on.
Send to
There are 3 Send to modes:
1. Phone MMS: send images to mobile phone.
2. Email GPRS: send images to an e-mail address via GPRS
use SMTP.
3. Call: calling your preset phone number when the camera
is triggered.
Setup the receiving phone number and email address in the
app program.

Send Mode
There are four Send modes: Manual works in SETUP mode,
Daily and Instant work in ON mode. OFF closes the
communication function.
1. Manual: Select Manual in the Send To frame. Ensure a SIM
card is installed. Video information cannot be sent if you
choose Phone MMS; you can send photos or videos (VGA of
less than 10s) when you choose email GPRS via WCDMA.
2. Daily: In this mode the camera will report summarized
information at a current time on how many pictures it had
taken since the start of the day.
If in Photo or Pic+Video mode, the camera will send an MMS
at the current time that shows the number of the pictures
taken. If it is on Video mode, the camera will send a SMS or
video showing how many video clips the camera took within
24 hours. If you choose Daily, set the daily reporting time:
xxH, xxM.
3. Instant: Select Instant mode and then set the Max Number
(default = 0) of MMS you want to send each day. Instant
sends an MMS to your phone instantly after it captures a
photo or to your email with a Video (VGA less than 10s).
If Camera Mode is set to Photo, you choose Instant mode and
then set the Max Number to 10, the camera will send 10 MMS
within 24 hours. It will continue to capture photos and save
them on the SD card. After 24 hours, the camera will send
MMS again when it captures photos. In Video mode and set
to Phone MMS, the camera will send only SMS instead of
MMS.
4. Off: To disable communication.
SMS Control
SMS Control enables the two way communication feature. If
you set SMS Control to ON, the camera can receive and
respond to your SMS commands. Also you can retrieve live
pictures any time, but the power consumption is larger than
normal scounting use.

Game Call
In this mode the camera can play an audio file. The audio file
must be saved in the directory \DCIM\100BMCIM\ with the
name AUDIxxxx (xxxx from 0000 to 9999) in WAV format. Set
Game Call to ON, or choose the audio file in the Windows
app. Note: Game Call will not function if the SD card is full.
Language
Choose the language you prefer.
Beep Sound
Enable or disable the beep sound.
Camera Posit
You can set A-Z position for your camera, so that you can
distinguish which photo is taken by which camera.
Format SD
Format the SD card. All images and videos in the SD card will
be deleted.

4.3 Change the Settings via Android app or SMS
You can receive spot photos or change camera settings through both an Android
BGTools application and an SMS command.
4.4 User Level

4.5 Use the smartphone application
It is easier to use the BGTools smartphone application to communicate with the
device rather than it is to edit SMS. Some screen shots of BGTools are shown here.
When using this application, select MC983G on the product page.
The BGTools smartphone application for Android (APK), and instructions for use,
can be downloaded from several locations on the Internet. It is free.

Appendix I: PIR Detection Zone
Figure 5 shows 5 kinds of detection ranges at different detection angles. This
camera has an 120 foot detection zone with a 60 degree PIR.

The PIR detection angle (α) is smaller than the field of view (FOV) angle (β). The
advantage of this design is to capture most, if not all, motions.
