How to Use This Guide
■Start Guide
You should read this start guide rst if this is the rst time you are using this printer.
The Start Guide describes precautions for using the printer safely and shows you how to prepare
the printer (software installation, etc.) before you use it.
■User's Guide
This electronic manual describes the basic procedures for using the printer. Specically, the User’s Guide explains
the basic print procedures, how to maintain the printer, how to troubleshoot problems, and describes all the
features of the printer and printer driver.
To read User's Guide, Adobe Reader/Adobe Acrobat Reader is required.
If Adobe Reader/Adobe Acrobat Reader is not installed on your computer, please download it from the
AdobeSystems Incorporated home page.
For more details about how to install and use the User’s Guide, please refer to the Start Guide.

The illustrations and the sample screens of the printer driver settings in this guide are created with
SCL-8000P in Windows 7. The contents of these printer driver screens and instructions are essentially
the same as those for Windows 8; however, explanations are provided when there are minor
differences in screen content or procedures.

1 Before Using the Printer
This section describes how to prepare the printer and procedures you should know before you use the printer.
1-1 Printer Part Names and Functions
Component names and functions are as follows:

[1] Upper unit
Open this unit when set paper or removing the paper jammed in the paper feed path or cleaning inside
of the printer. Holds the printhead.
[2] Operation panel
This panel has the key switches necessary for printer operation and the lamps that indicate printer status.
[3] Main power switch
Use this switch when the printer is scheduled to be unused for a long period of time or it is relocated.
[4] Ink tank door
Open this door when replacing ink tanks. Ink tank door is locked while the printer operates.
[5] Paper delivery slot
Paper is ejected through this slot.

[6] Maintenance cartridge door
Open this door when replacing the maintenance cartridge. Maintenance cartridge door is locked while
the printer operates.

Cable clamps are provided to prevent the USB cable from being disconnected carelessly.

[1] Upper unit release lever
Push this lever up to release the upper unit.
[2] Paper tray
Load paper in this tray.
[3] Feeder lift button
Pressing this button moves the paper tray up and down.
[4] Ink tanks
Black (Bk), Cyan (C), Magenta (M), and Yellow (Y) ink tanks are loaded.
[5] Transport unit
Paper is fed by this unit. Clean it if soiled by paper dust or ink.
[6] Maintenance cartridge
Ink used during the printhead cleaning is collected here.

Pressing this key to enter the sleep mode. Pressing this key again to exit from the sleep mode.
Lamp status are as follows:
On Power-on.
O Power-o.
Blinking Sleep mode.
[2] PAUSE key
Printing Pressing this key suspends printing.
in pause Pressing this key restarts printing.
[3] FEED key
Pressing this key feeds paper 1 page. Pressing and holding this key feeds paper continuously.
[4] BACK FEED key
Pressing this key feeds paper one page backward. Pressing and holding this key feeds paper backward
continuously. (The possible Back Feed length is 500 mm or less (accumulated total))
[5] Ink warning lamp
On No residual ink or no ink tank.
Blinking Low residual ink.
O Sucient ink.

[6] Maintenance cartridge warning lamp
On Full.
Blinking Nearly full.
O Sucient room to collect ink.
[7] Remaining paper lamp
On No paper or paper jam.
Blinking The remaining amount of paper is low.
Remaining Paper Lamp starts ashing when remaining papers become about
27 mm or less in height. (Only when sheets are supplied through feeder lift tray)
O Sucient paper.
[8] ERROR lamp
On Operator-call error (can be recovered by the user operation).
Blinking Fatal error.
O Normal.
[9] STATUS lamp
On Online mode.
Blinking Data being received.(printing, cleaning, initializing, shut-down)
O
Mode impossible of printing (during error outbreak, during sleep, during a pause etc.).
Important
• Never turn off the main power switch during a print job. This could cause damage because the printhead
cannot return to the home position.
• Never attempt to open the Upper unit by force or hit the unit. This could damage the printer or result in
poor print quality. Always open and close the Upper unit slowly.
• Opening the ink tank door or maintenance cartridge door during printing causes an error and suspends
printing. This could result in a failure. Do not open the ink tank door or maintenance cartridge door except
when replacing an ink tank or maintenance cartridge or opening/closing the upper unit.
• To turn off the printer completely, press the power key to place the printer in the sleep mode and then
turn off the main power switch. If the printer is already in the sleep mode, just turn off the main power
switch.

1-2 Connecting the Printer and Computer
The printer is compatible with Hi-Speed USB and LAN (Gigabit Ethernet).
Important
• You can disconnect the USB cable even while the printer and computer are on, but do not disconnect the
USB cable in the cases described below. This could prevent the printer from operating normally.
- While the computer is starting up (until the desktop display appears).
- While the printer is printing.
- While you install the printer driver.
To disconnect the USB cable while the computer and the printer are on, disconnect it at the computer
or the USB hub. To reconnect the USB cable, wait at least 5 seconds before you connect it again. If you
reconnect it immediately, the printer may not operate correctly.
• A USB cable is not provided with the printer. Please prepare a cable that matches the port on your
computer.
■Connect a USB cable
Connect the USB cable to the printer and the computer.
First, connect the cable to the printer, then connect it to the computer.
Important
• Whenever connecting a USB cable to the printer, put the USB cable in the cable clamps as shown in the figure.

■Connect a LAN cable
Connect the LAN cable to the printer and the computer.
Important
• Please consult your network administrator when conecting to an office LAN.
• If a printer driver has not been installed in the computer to which you want to connect your printer, install
it before connecting the USB cable or LAN cable.
• For how to install the printer driver, refer to the Start Guide.

1-3 Switching the Printer On and O
■Switching the Printer On
Switch the printer on.
1Turn on the main power switch.
When the [STATUS] lamp which has been blinking stays lit, the printer is ready for printing.
2The STATUS lamp stays lit.
Important
• When the printer is in the sleep mode, press the power key to return the printer to Online mode. Printer
will also wake up from the sleep mode automatically as soon as it starts receiving a print job.

1-4 Paper Loading Procedure
This section describes how to load paper.
1Make sure that the power lamp is lit.
If the printer has been turned off, turn on the main power switch. When the printer is in the sleep
mode, press the power key.
