1. Introduction
The C300xr ISDN audio codec has been designed for the broadcast of high quality audio over
the ISDN and other digital networks, such as Switch-56, dedicated digital lines, optical fibre
networks, digital microwave links, satellite links, etc. To achieve an efficient utilisation of the
available network bandwidth, the C300xr uses apt-XTM100 audio compression/decompression
system to provide full duplex point-to-point communication.

3. Controls and Indicators
3.1 VFD Display
A 20 character by 2 line VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display), provides comprehensive
information on the configuration of the unit and current status.
3.2 VU Meters
20 bit Digital VU Meters for monitoring Left and Right audio channels with Peak Hold. The
Meter range is -54dB to 0dB.
3.3 VU Button
Allows the user to monitor either the Input or Output audio via the Digital VU Meters. This
button operates by toggling between the Input and Output audio signals. Each time it is
depressed, it will cause the VFD Display to flash the current selection for 2 seconds.
Please note that if the current Patch Function is set to Dial On Audio, the VU Button will be
disabled since the Input audio is being monitored continuously for activity. The following
message is displayed:
MENU : VU Meters
STATUS : Not Valid

3.5 DIAL Button
The DIAL button is used to dial an ISDN call.
(a) Manual Dial
The first depression of the DIAL button will take the unit into the Manual Dial menu as the
first option. This allows the user to type in an ISDN number via the keypad, an optional sub-
address can also be specified by use of the > button (translated to # ), followed by the sub-
address:
MENU : Manual Dial
01719082365#1
Once the ISDN number has been entered, the second depression of the DIAL button instructs
the unit to dial the ISDN number. The Manual Dial Option will use the Audio configurations
for the currently selected patch. The call status is then displayed as follows:
ISDN1: Ready
ISDN2: Ready MUTE
ISDN1: Dialling
ISDN2: Ready MUTE
If the call is successful then the following is displayed:
ISDN1: Connect
ISDN2: Ready SYNC
If the call fails to be established, then one of the following diagnostics messages is displayed
for 2 seconds:
ISDN CLEARING
Together with:
Error
Remote Error
Disconnected
Number Unobtainable
Number Incomplete
Number Changed
Network Busy
Number Busy
Line Out Of Service

To Dial the second B Channel, repeat the above procedure. The audio bandwidth will
automatically adjust to include the additional B Channel data.

(b) Patch / Memory Dial
The first depression of the DIAL button followed immediately by a second depression will take
the unit into the Patch / Memory Dial menu, allowing the user to access 1 of 20 pre-stored
configuration memories:
MENU : Patch Dial
PATCH A
The ^and Vbuttons can be used to select the required patch (1 of 20). A third depression of
the DIAL button instructs the unit to dial the ISDN numbers associated with the selected patch.
The call status is then displayed as (a) above
3.6 HANG Button
The Hang button is used to hang-up the ISDN calls. The following message will be displayed
for 2 seconds:
MENU : Hangup
STATUS : Clearing
If there is no call to hang-up, then the following is displayed for 2 seconds:
MENU : Hangup
STATUS : No Call
3.7 Numerical 0 - 9 Buttons
The 0 - 9 Numerical Keypad allows entry of ISDN numbers, sub-address information and for
use in patch names.

the Restore Time in seconds of error free data throughput, after which the automatic X.21
Restore is initiated. The Restore Time setting and the Errors display are only relevant when the
codec is operating in the Backup Master mode.

4.4.5 Codec Function
The C300xr Codec can operate in 1 of 5 selectable modes; ISDN, X.21, X.21 with ISDN
Backup - Master Unit or Slave Unit and Dial On Audio.
Dial On Audio Mode
When operating in Dial On Audio mode, the Input audio channels are monitored continuously
for activity. On detection of a signal which is above -27 dB, the unit will automatically dial the
pre-configured ISDN number for the current patch. If the ISDN call fails to be established for
any reason, the unit will re-dial until it has successfully connected through. Similarly, if the
ISDN call is terminated, other than by the unit which initiated the call, a re-dial will be
activated automatically.
Once the ISDN call has been established the Silence Timeout period is used to determine when
the call is terminated. The Silence Timeout period can be set to a minimum of 1 minute and a
maximum of 8 minutes, in increments of 1 minute.
The ISDN call can also be manually terminated by the unit which initiated the call, using the
HANG button.
NOTE: When operating in Dial On Audio Mode the VU Meters are locked to monitor the input
audio only. The user can not change the VU Meter setting to monitor the output audio.
X.21 Mode
Please note that when operating in X.21 mode, the ISDN port will still be functional, however
the audio will not be routed through to the ISDN connector.
Backup Master / Slave Mode
In the X.21 with ISDN Backup mode, the unit at one end of the X.21 line should be configured
as a Master Unit and the other unit should be configured as a Slave Unit. This prevents both
units initiating the ISDN Backup, which can cause a call conflict. ISDN Backup is initiated
following 5 seconds of loss of synchronisation on the X.21 line. The automatic X.21 Restore
occurs following 10 seconds of error free, continuous, synchronisation on the X.21 line.
NOTE: When operating in ISDN Backup Mode, it is advised that the DCE should carry X.21
termination resistors, please contact Systembase Limited or an authorised distributor for further
information.

result, enabling the units to be tested independently.

4.6 ISDN Country Options
There are a number of ISDN parameters associated with different countries and regions in the
world, these can be readily re-configured on the C300xr Codec.
NOTE : It is important that the ISDN line should be disconnected from the unit before any
