INTRODUCTION
The C400xr ISDN audio codec has been designed for the broadcast of high quality audio over
the ISDN and other digital networks, such as Switch-56, dedicated digital lines, optical fibre
networks, digital microwave links, satellite links, etc. To achieve an efficient utilisation of
the available network data bandwidth, the C400xr uses apt-XTM100 4:1 fixed audio compres-
sion / decompression system to provide full duplex, point-to-point audio transmission.

CONTROLS AND INDICATORS
VFD Display
A 20 character by 2 line VFD (Vacuum
Fluorescent Display), provides compre-
hensive information on the configuration
of the unit and current status.
VU Meters
20 bit Digital VU Meters for monitoring Left
and Right audio channels with Peak Hold.
The Meter range is -54dB to 0dB.
VU Button
Allows the user to monitor either the Input
or Output audio via the Digital VU Meters.
This button operates by toggling between
the Input and Output audio signals. Each
time it is depressed, it will cause the VFD
Display to flash the current selection for 1
seconds.
Note that if the current Patch Function is set to
Dial On Audio, the VU Button will be disabled since
the Input audio is being monitored continuously
for activity. The following message is displayed:
MENU : VU Meters
STATUS : Not Valid
Menu Buttons
Menu Scroll Up / Previous button.
Menu Scroll Down / Next button.
Menu Select / Edit button is used to
select the configuration which is to be
modified.
NO Menu NO / Cancel button is used to
answer No or to abort the configuration
change. The NO button is also used to
exit a menu level and return to the level
above. Pressing the NO button several
times will always take the user back to the
Unit Description display.
YES Menu YES / Confirm button is used
to answer YES or to confirm the configura-
tion change.
DIAL Button
The DIAL button is used to dial an ISDN
call.
(a) Manual Dial
The first depression of the DIAL button
will take the unit into the Manual Dial
menu as the first option. This allows the
user to type in an ISDN number via the
keypad. An optional sub-address can also
be specified by use of the button (trans-
lated to # on the display), followed by a
numerical sub-address:

Once the ISDN number has been en-
tered, a second depression of the DIAL
button instructs the unit to dial the dis-
played ISDN number. The call status is
then displayed as follows:
B1: Ready B2: Ready
B3: Ready B4: Ready
B1: Dial B2: Ready
B3: Ready B4: Ready
If the call has successfully connected then
the following is displayed:
B1: Con B2: Ready
B3: Ready B4: Ready
If the call fails to be established, then one
of the following diagnostics messages is
displayed for 1 seconds:
ISDN CLEARING
Together with:
Error
Remote Error
Disconnected
Number Unobtainable
Number Incomplete
Number Changed
Network Busy
Number Busy
Line Out Of Service
Not Allowed
Acknowledgment
No Reply
Incompatible Dest
To Dial the B2, B3 and B4 Channels,
repeat the above procedure for each. The
audio bandwidth will automatically adjust
to include the additional B Channels.

Note: The Manual Dial Option will use the Audio
configurations for the currently selected patch.
(b) Patch / Memory Dial The first depres-
sion of the DIAL button followed immedi-
ately by a second depression will take the
unit into the Patch / Memory Dial menu,
allowing the user to access 1 of 26 pre-
stored configuration memories:

PATCH A
The and buttons can be used to
select the required patch (1 of 26). A third
depression of the DIAL button instructs
the unit to dial the ISDN numbers associ-
ated with the selected patch. The call
status is then displayed as (a) above.
If any of the ISDN calls fail to be estab-
lished, the user can request the unit to
redial the failed calls by pressing the DIAL
button twice, or by pressing the DIAL
button followed by the ISDN telephone
number.
HANG Button
The HANG button is used to hang-up the
ISDN calls. The following message will be
displayed for 2 seconds:
MENU : Hangup
STATUS : Clear
If there is no call to hang-up, then the
following is displayed for 2 seconds:
MENU : Hangup
STATUS : No Call
Numerical 0 - 9 Buttons
The 0 - 9 Numerical Keypad allows entry of
ISDN numbers, sub-address information
and for use in patch names.

MENU SYSTEM
The menu system on the C400xr Audio
Codec has been designed to allow the
user to configure the unit with ease. Five
keys are used to drive the menu system :-
 UP
 DOWN
 RIGHT / EDIT
YES CONFIRM EDIT
NO ABORT EDIT / LEFT(BACK)
Unit Description
The software release and serial number of
the unit are displayed on the Title screen
as follows :-

ISDN Status
The status of the ISDN B Channels is
accessed by pressing the button when
the Title Screen is shown, and is dis-
played as follows :-
B1: Ready B2: Ready
B3: Ready B4: Ready
The ISDN status options are:
load (loading patch)
Ready (layer 1 activated)
Synch (Bad Line)
Dorm (dormant)
Dial (dialling)
Con (connected)
Clear (clearing)
Incom (incoming)
Note: If the C400xr is configured in X.21 Mode,
the ISDN port can still function, however the
audio will not be routed through to the ISDN
connector.
Audio Status
The status of the received audio and the
current operating mode of the codec is
accessed by pressing the button, and is
displayed in the following format :-
AUDIO STATUS: SYNC
MODE: 15KHz Stereo
The C400xr has been designed to Mute the
audio signal if end-to-end synchronisation
is not achieved. The operating Mode shown
here is the actual mode in which the codec
has achieved end-to-end synchronisation,
and not necessarily the configured mode,
since the C400xr has the capability of
intelligently changing the mode depending
on the Audio Priority and Auto Hunt con-
figurations.
Select Patch
The select patch menu is used to load one
of the 26 available patches (memories).
Once loaded, the user may edit the set-
tings associated with the selected patch.

The button is used to edit the current
selection, the display changes as follows:
EDIT : Select Patch
OPTION : PATCH A
The and buttons can be used to
select the required patch:
OPTIONS : PATCH A to PATCH Z
The YES button is used to confirm the
selection, the NO button to abort the edit.
Modify Patch
The next menu is the modify Patch /
Memory screen:
MENU : Modify Patch
STATUS : PATCH A
The button is used to enter the next
level of the menu system, which allows
the user to modify the parameters associ-
ated with each patch.
Patch Name
MENU : Patch Name

The button can now be used to edit the
patch name, the display changes as
follows:
EDIT : Patch Name

scroll through A - Z and 0 - 9, the numerical
keypad can also be used for entry. The 
button confirms the character selection
and moves to the next character position.
There is no facility to edit a character once
it has been confirmed. On completion of
entry of up to 10 characters, press the
YES button to save the changes, and the
NO button to abort the changes:

The button is used to enter the next
level of the menu system, which allows
the user to modify the parameters associ-
ated with ISDN operation of the unit.
ISDN Audio
MENU : ISDN Audio

The button can now be used to edit the
ISDN Audio mode, the display changes as
follows:
EDIT : ISDN Audio
OPTION : 15KHz Stereo
The and buttons can be used to
select the required ISDN Audio mode:
7.5KHz Mono
15KHz Mono
22KHz Mono
3.7KHz Stereo

The YES button is used to confirm the
selection, the NO button to abort the edit.
The user can also change the ISDN Audio
mode dynamically while ISDN calls are
connected, and automatically add or
delete ISDN B Channels as required.
NO TE: When operating in Mono, only the Left Input
and Left Output audio channels are active if the
Audio Mixing option has been switched OFF.
Channel 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 Options
MENU : Ch1 Options
The button is used to edit the ISDN
parameter associated with each ISDN B
Channel. The following 6 option menus are
repeated for all four Channels.
ISDN Destination Number
MENU : ISDN Dest Num
Null
The button is used to edit the ISDN
Destination Number, the display changes
as follows:
EDIT : ISDN Dest Num
The and buttons can be used to
scroll through 0 - 9, the numerical keypad
can also be used for entry. The button
confirms the character selection and
moves to the next character position.
There is no facility to edit a character once
it has been confirmed. On completion of
entry of up to 18 digits, press the YES
button to save the changes, and the NO
button to abort the changes:

The button is used to edit the ISDN
Destination Sub-Address, applicable only
if subscribed to. The display changes as
follows:

scroll through A - Z and 0 - 9, the numerical
keypad can also be used for entry. The 
button confirms the character selection
and moves to the next character position.
There is no facility to edit a character once
it has been confirmed. On completion of
entry of up to 6 characters, press the YES
button to save the changes, and the NO
button to abort the changes:

Local Number, applicable only if subscribed
to Multiple Subscriber Numbering (MSN).
The display changes as follows:

confirms the character selection and
moves to the next character position.
There is no facility to edit a character once
it has been confirmed. On completion of

Press the YES button to save the changes,
and the NO button to abort the changes:

ISDN Caller Line Identification (CLI)

The button is used to edit the ISDN
Caller Line Identification, which is appli-
cable only if subscribed to. The display
changes as follows:
EDIT : ISDN CLI
The and buttons can be used to
scroll through 0 - 9, the numerical keypad
can also be used for entry. The button
confirms the character selection and
moves to the next character position.
There is no facility to edit a character once
it has been confirmed. On completion of
entry of up to 18 digits, press the YES
button to save the changes, and the NO

The button can now be used to select
the ISDN Auxiliary Data Port Mode, the
display changes as follows:

The and buttons can be used to
scroll through the options:

Press the YES button to save the changes,
and the NO button to abort the changes:

OPTION : 9600bps
NO TE: CTS output signal should be used for Flow
Control when Auxiliary Data is enabled.
Auto Hunt
(Detect Incoming Audio Mode)
MENU : Auto Hunt
STATUS: Off
The button is used to edit the Auto
Hunt mode. The display changes as follows:
EDIT : Auto Hunt
OPTION: Off
The and buttons can be used to
select either ‘On’ or ‘Off’. If ‘On’ is selected
then the codec will automatically detect
the format of the incoming audio and re-
configure its mode to match. The re-
configuration is for the duration of the
incoming call, the C400xr codec will revert
back to the original configuration when
the call is terminated.
Silence Timeout
(Dial on Audio)
MENU : Silence Timeout
STATUS: 1 minute
The button is used to edit the Silence
Timeout period associated with the Dial
On Audio / Hang on Silence mode of opera-
tion. The display changes as follows:
EDIT : Silence Timeout
STATUS: 1 minute
The and buttons can be used to
change the Silence Timeout period in
multiples of 1 minute, up to a maximum of
8 minutes. The Patch Function must be
set to Dial On Audio for the Silence
Timeout period to be active.
X.21 Options
The button is once again used to enter
the next level of the menu system, which
allows the user to modify the parameters
associated with X.21 operation.

X.21 Audio mode, the display changes as
