1Scope of this Quick Start Guide
This Quick Start Guide provides basic setup and configuration of the
M42de 80 Gbps Video Analyzer/Generator and the Video Protocol Suite
(VPS) GUI application used to manage it.
1.1 Introducing the M42de
The following features and functions are supported on the M42de.
Note: The features in the following bullets are not necessarily covered in
this QSG. Please see the M42de User Guide and the 6.80 Release
Notes for additional information.
•Equipped with USB-C ports and new enhanced full-size
DisplayPort (UHBR20) connectors for Tx and Rx functions.
•Fully supports UHBR sink and source testing at 10Gb/s,
13.5Gb/s and 20Gb/s lane rates with 128b/132b line coding.
•Supports a broad range of compliance testing for HBR3 and
UHBR source, sink and branch devices in accordance with
VESA DP 2.1 compliance test specifications.
•Capture and decode video, protocol, control packets including
Display Stream Compression (DSC) and Multi-Stream
Transport (MST).
•View incoming video and metadata (including DSC
compressed) from a source device.
•Custom video generator can test displays at HBR and UHBR
lane rates with large format and image library.
•Configure link training parameters to test display’s handling of
link training.
•Generate DSC, select patterns and configure slices and video
parameters.
•View and edit EDID and DPCD registers.
•Monitor AUX Channel transactions while emulating a DP 1.4 or
DP 2.1 source or sink.
•Exclusive: T.A.P.4 passive monitoring mode provides visibility
to Main Link and AUX Channel traffic for debug of
interoperability issues between real DP 2.1 devices.

•Test source and sink devices with Panel Replay capability.
•Python-based automation API allows running compliance and
custom verification tasks in unattended mode.

•The M42de supports the ability to passively monitor devices
which support USB-C Extended Power Range (EPR).

1.3 About the M42de
The M42de is a compact versatile test instrument offering entry level
functional testing that can be extended through software licenses to a full
compliance tester with sophisticated analysis and diagnostic capabilities.

2About the VPS GUI Application
The M42de is operated through the embedded Video Protocol Suite
(VPS). The VPS is a GUI application that can run either on a Windows
host PC or on an external display connected to an HDMI port.
Note: The VPS GUI is activated by default for M42de systems.
Instructions for operating through the legacy ATP Manager is provided in
the User Guide. You can switch between the ATP Manager (legacy GUI)
and the VPS GUI using the procedure provided in Section 2.1.
When operating from a host PC, the VPS and/or ATP Manager
application has to be installed on the PC. When operating using an
external display, a mouse (provided) is required and a keyboard is
optional but recommended. These operational scenarios are shown in
the following images.

2.1 Switching Between the VPS and ATP GUIs
You may easily switch between the VPS GUI and the legacy ATP
Manger GUI using the following procedure:
To access the system menu from the VPS Dashboard, click the
three-bar menu at the top left.
Within the system menu, select the SWITCH TO ATP MANAGER button
at the bottom left.

This will bring up the legacy ATP Manager GUI. You may revert to the
VPS GUI from here by clicking the Switch to VPS GUI button at the
bottom right of the card control screen, as shown below.

3Getting Started
This chapter explains what is involved in getting your M42de up and
operating.
3.1 What is in the M42de Shipping Box?
The Teledyne LeCroy M42de is shipped with the following items:
•AC Power Line Cord
•CE Declaration of Conformity
•Enhanced DP80 Cable
•USB-C cable (Unmarked) –capable of supporting 80 Gbps

3.3 Getting the M42de Up and Running
3.3.1 Selecting an External Monitor
Due to HDCP 2.3 content protection schemes you must use an
HDCP 2.3-enabled external monitor to view HDCP 2.3 protected
content from a source in the VPS GUI. The following displays
qualify:
•Dell UltraSharp 27 inch Monitor Model U2718Q.
•Dell UltraSharp 27 inch 4K Monitor Model U2720Q.
•ASUS 28" 4K UHD Monitor Model VP28U.
•ViewSonic 27" 4K UHD Monitor Model VX2776-4K-MHD.
•Acer bmiipx 27” WQHD IPS Monitor Model KW272U

3.3.2 Set Up
Note: You can fully operate the M42de through the embedded VPS
GUI using the following instruction. However, there is an alternative
way, with the VPS GUI application running on a host Windows PC
as described in the Chapter 4.
Use the following procedure to get your M42de up and running.
1. Remove the M42de from the shipping box and lay it flat or upright on
your desktop or benchtop.
2. Connect the M42de power cable (provided) to a suitable outlet
(110-240V 50/60Hz).

3. Connect an external HDMI monitor to the HDMI connector on the
M42de rear panel at the location indicated below (see Section 3.3.1
for external monitor requirements).

4. Connect a mouse and/or keyboard to the USB ports on the front (or
rear) panel of the M42de as shown below. (Section 3.2 provides
locations of the rear panel USB ports.)
Note: Using a connected mouse or keyboard, you can also utilize
the virtual keyboards that present themselves in the VPS GUI.
5. Power up the M42de via the power button on the front of the M42de
(see Section 3.2.1 for power button LED color modes).

The VPS GUI will appear on the external display as shown below.
6. Connect your DisplayPort device under test to the desired In/Rx or
Out/Tx port on the M42de front panel. The following example shows
a DisplayPort 2.1 source device connected to the USB-C In/Rx 2
port.

Note: Refer to Section 3.3.3 as needed to change the VPS GUI’s
resolution on the connected monitor.
You can fully operate the M42de through the VPS GUI using this
connection scenario. Chapter 5 provides additional test configurations.
3.3.3 Changing the VPS GUI Display Resolution
You can change the resolution of the connected monitor that the VPS
GUI is being displayed using the Mint Linux utilities. Follow these steps:
1. Minimize the VPS GUI using the minimize button at the top right of
the window.
2. Once the VPS GUI is minimized, click on the Mint icon (green M) on
the lower left corner of the monitor to access the Mint Linux
Controls.
3. Select the Settings primary menu on the left and on the right select
Display Configuration secondary menu. The Display Configuration
menu appears.
4. Set the resolution using the Resolution pull-down menu. The
resolution should change and persist through a reboot.

4Managing the M42de with VPS GUI from a
PC
The M42de can be operated from the VPS GUI application installed on a
host Windows PC. The VPS GUI application will have to be downloaded
and installed on your Windows PC and you will need to connect your PC
to the M42de over an Ethernet IP connection. This chapter provides
instruction for installing the VPS GUI, followed by how to set the time and
date.
Note: You must complete Steps 1 through 3 in Section 3.3.2 Set Up
before installing the VPS GUI application.
4.1 Install the M42de VPS GUI Application
This procedure describes how to install the VPS GUI application on your
host PC.
1. On your PC, download the VPS Remote GUI Application from the
Teledyne Lecroy downloads page: Teledyne LeCroy - quantumdata
M42de Video Analyzer/Generator.
2. Once the download is complete, click on the Video Protocol Suite
GUI link and follow the installation prompts.

3. After installation completes, run the new VPS application. It should
be available in the Start Menu under All Programs →
VideoProtocolSuite, and from an icon on your PC desktop.
Note: Verify that the version number in the title bar matches the
version on the website.
4. Connect your PC to the M42de using an Ethernet cable. The
connection is made to the Rj45 port on the rear panel of the M42de
labeled E1 to Network as shown below.
The Ethernet IP connection from the host PC to the M42de can be
accomplished by connecting directly or through your corporate
network. Both scenarios are depicted in the following images.

5. Set the IP address of the M42de Instrument Network Settings of the
embedded VPS GUI from the Tester screen by clicking the three
horizontal bar menu icon at the top right corner of the Dashboard.

6. Select System Settings and select Instrument Network Settings.
A dialog box appears enabling you to set DHCP or specify an IP
address. Ensure the Netmask and Gateway are properly configured.

Note: Be sure to use an IP address that is compatible with your
corporate LAN or your PC if you are connecting directly.
