Thank you for buying a Teledyne LeCroy product. We’re certain you’ll be
pleased with the detailed features unique to our instruments.
This guide is intended to help you install a WaveRunner 8000-R
oscilloscope into your test environment and prepare it for remote control.

Introducing WaveRunner 8000-R
WaveRunner 8000-R oscilloscopes utilize the WaveRunner 8000
acquisition system to provide a high-performance, 4 GHz oscilloscope in
a convenient, low-profile form factor.
The compact design has a height of less than 2U (3.5”, 8.89 cm) and
includes a standard rackmount kit, easily lending itself to be installed in
an automated test environment.
Unlike most digitizing systems, the WaveRunner 8000-R provides
the powerful, deep toolbox that is expected in a Teledyne LeCroy
oscilloscope. The full range of the WaveRunner 8000’s analysis capability
is available; including an array of serial protocol analysis packages and
application specific packages.
The WaveRunner 8000-R models are fully software-compatible with their
WaveRunner 8000 counterparts. Development can be conducted with the
assistance of the front panel and display of the WaveRunner 8000, then
seamlessly transitioned to automated testing.
A variety of remote connectivity options—LAN, USBTMC, and GPIB (with
optional adapter)—offer flexibility when connecting to the WaveRunner
8000-R. Teledyne LeCroy’s free WaveStudio software is a fast and easy
way to analyze acquired waveforms off-line, or remotely control an

Operating Environment Precautions
Use proper power cord. Use only the power cord shipped with this
instrument and certified for the country of use.
Maintain ground.
The AC inlet ground is connected to the frame of the
instrument. Connect line cords only to outlets with safety ground contacts.
WARNING. Interrupting the protective conductor inside or outside
the oscilloscope, or disconnecting the safety ground terminal,
creates a hazardous situation. Intentional interruption is prohibited.
Connect and disconnect properly. Do not connect/disconnect probes or
test leads while they are connected to a live voltage source.
Observe all terminal ratings. Do not apply a voltage to any input that
exceeds the maximum rating of that input. Refer to the markings next to
the BNC terminals for maximum allowed values.
Use only within operational environment listed. Do not use in wet or
explosive environments.
Use indoors only.
Keep product surfaces clean and dry.
Do not block the cooling vents. Leave a minimum six-inch (15 cm) gap
between the instrument and the nearest object. Keep the underside clear
of papers and other objects.
Exercise care when lifting and carrying.
Do not remove the covers or inside parts. Refer all maintenance to
qualified service personnel.
Do not operate with suspected failures. Check body and cables regularly.
If any part is damaged, cease operation immediately and sequester the
instrument from inadvertent use.

Preparing for Remote Control
Powering On/Off
CAUTION: Connect only to grounded AC power. Be mindful of the
total power consumption, as connecting too many devices to a
single outlet can cause an overvoltage condition.
To power on, flip the Power Switch to ON. This automatically loads the
oscilloscope application.
The Remote Status Indicator on the front will flash when the oscilloscope
software is fully loaded and ready for remote control. It will remain a
steady green when a remote connection is established.
To power down, flip the Power Switch to STANDBY. When in Standby
mode, some "housekeeping" circuitry continues to draw power. The only
way to fully power down the instrument is to unplug the AC line cord from
the outlet. We recommend unplugging the instrument if it will remain
unused for a long period of time.
The WaveRunner 8000-R reverts to these factory defaults whenever
restarted after powering down:

Presets
The remote control setting is one of the few that do not revert to the
factory defaults when restarted, as it is critical to know what the setting is
in order to connect.
The factory default setting is LXI (VXI11), but the instrument will reboot
with whatever setting was last made.
We recommend that the remote control setting and the device address be
set locally at installation, prior to rackmounting, and that it not be changed
over a remote connection.
Remote Control Software
For all methods of remote control, an installation of NI-VISA is required on
the controller.
If you switch to TCPIP (VICP) remote control, also install the Teledyne
LeCroy VICP Passport for NI-VISA.
If the controller runs Windows, we recommend an installation of the free
Teledyne LeCroy WaveStudio software. WaveStudio will help you establish
and test the remote connection.
Teledyne LeCroy software is available from teledynelecroy.com/support/
softwaredownload under Oscilloscope Downloads > Software Utilities.
Initial Test Connection
Before rackmounting the WaveRunner 8000-R, we recommend making a
test connection from a PC to the oscilloscope using the default settings
to conrm that remote control is functional. This same procedure can be
used to test the remote connection after you have completed your remote
control conguration on the WaveRunner 8000-R, substituting whatever
connection type you have selected.

5. Expand the list of WaveRunner 8000-R functions in the WaveStudio
Devices pane and open the Terminal window.
6. In the top pane of the Terminal, enter the query: *IDN?
If the WaveRunner 8000-R responds with its identifying information,
remote control is functional.
7. Open Display Capture.
An image of the WaveRunner 8000-R touch screen should appear in
the WaveStudio window.
8. Clicking on the image of the WaveRunner 8000-R in WaveStudio,
choose Utilities > Utilities Setup and open the Remote dialog.
The Remote dialog will show any dynamic IP address pulled.
BASICS
1. Install WaveStudio and NI-VISA on the PC. Open any firewalls between
the PC and the oscilloscope to TCP/IP communications on port 111.
2. Power on the WaveRunner 8000-R and connect to a network access
point using a standard Ethernet cable. It is helpful if the network is
served by a DHCP server, as this will allow you to test addressing.
3. On the PC, open WaveStudio and select Add Scope.
4. On the Add Scope dialog, choose connection type LXI and enter the
host name (oscilloscope serial number printed on the rear). Click OK.
If the connection is successful, after a brief pause you will see the
WaveRunner 8000-R added to the list of devices with the status “Alive.”

When you are ready to make your actual remote conguration, connect a
monitor to either the DisplayPort or VGA video output, and a mouse and
keyboard to any of the USB ports. You can do this before or after powering
on the WaveRunner 8000-R. This will enable you to access both the MAUI
oscilloscope software and the Windows dialogs to make all the required
remote control settings. MAUI will appear on the external monitor as soon
as it is connected to the WaveRunner 8000-R.
Connecting via LAN
The WaveRunner 8000-R can be addressed using either the host name
or the IP address. We have found that using the full IP address is more
reliable when using automated control programs, provided the correct
address is known. See the MAUI Oscilloscopes Remote Control and
Automation Manual for more information about addressing.
The default host name is the product serial number, which is printed on
the rear of the unit and your registration card. This name is also available
from MAUI by going to Support > About. If the WaveRunner 8000-R is on
a network served by a DNS server, be sure it is known to the DNS server by
this name.
The WaveRunner 8000-R is preset to pull a dynamic IP address once it is
connected to a network served by a DHCP server, but this address will be
replaced whenever the oscilloscope is restarted after being powered down.
We recommend setting a static IP address for remote control, especially if
you will be using automated programs for control.
Remote Conguration
Connect an Ethernet cable from either port on the back panel to a network
access point. Be sure the WaveRunner 8000-R is on the same subnet as
the controller.
Using the monitor, go to Utilities > Utilities Setup and open Remote.
In the Control from eld, select either of two protocols for remote control
over LAN:
• TCPIP (VICP) supports MATLAB, VBA, VBS, C/C++ and JavaScript. To
use this method, also download and install the VICP Passport on the
controller.
• LXI (VXI11), the default, supports all of the the above, except MATLAB,
plus newer programming languages such as C# and Python. You do not
need the VICP Passport.
If desired, select Net Connections from the MAUI Remote dialog to access
the Windows networking dialogs and set a static IP address.
When nished, conrm that the correct IP address appears on the Remote
dialog and record it for use in VISA and ActiveDSO connect strings.

Connecting via GPIB
Connect the optional USB2-GPIB Converter from either USB 2.0 port on the
back panel to the GPIB port on the controller.
Using the monitor, go to Utilities > Utilities Setup and open Remote.
Choose Control From GPIB.
The oscilloscope software will use the default GPIB device address of 6.
This must match how the device is identied to the rest of the bus and
addressed in programs. To change the GPIB Address, double-click the eld
and enter the correct value on the pop-up keypad.
Record the GPIB address for use in VISA and ActiveDSO connect strings.
Direct Connection
The WaveRunner 8000-R can be controlled over a coaxial cable or a
straight ENET cable capable of directional switching (as most modern
cables are). In this case, choose Control From TCPIP (VICP) and follow
all other requirements for that method. Be sure to set a static IP address
on the WaveRunner 8000-R unless you are running a DHCP server on
the controller, as otherwise there will be no way to manage dynamic
addressing.

Connecting via USBTMC
Connect a USBTMC (A-B) cable from the USBTMC port on the back of the
oscilloscope to a USB 2.0 port on the controller.
CAUTION: Do not connect to a USB 3.0 port on the controller. Use
only the USB 2.0 ports or use a USB 2.0 cable.
Using the monitor, go to Utilities > Utilities Setup and open Remote.
Choose Control From USBTMC.
Record the USBTMC address for use in VISA and ActiveDSO connect
strings.

Rackmounting
We recommend conguring and testing all required connections prior to
mounting the device.
Parts
The WaveRunner 8000-R rackmount kit is delivered with:
• Two (2) mounting brackets
• Four (4) M4x6 pan-head screws with Torx T-20 drive
• One (1) Torx T-20 key
Note: The kit does not include the fasteners needed to attach the
rackmount to your equipment rack. Consult your rack manufacturer
regarding the appropriate type, size, and number of fasteners to install the
rackmount securely.
Tools
You will need a Torx T-20 screwdriver to attach the rackmount brackets to
the oscilloscope.

This rackmount kit has been designed to t standard 19-inch rack cabinets
per EIA/ECA 310-E.

Installation Instructions
1. Position the left bracket so that the screw holes align with the two holes
on the side of the oscilloscope. The mounting "ears" should be flush
with the front of the unit.
2. Using two of the M4x6 screws included with the rackmount kit, attach
the left bracket to the oscilloscope body. Apply 20 in.-lb. torque to the
screws.
3. Install the right bracket in the same manner as the left.
4. With the brackets securely fastened to the unit, install the oscilloscope
into a rack following the manufacturer's specications.
CAUTION: Use two fasteners per side to fully support the weight of
the unit.

MAINTENANCE
Cleaning
Clean the outside of the WaveRunner 8000-R using a soft cloth moistened
with water or isopropyl alcohol solution. Do not use harsh or abrasive
cleansers. Dry thoroughly before using. Do not submerge the instrument
or allow moisture to penetrate it.
Calibration
Schedule factory calibration once per year. Contact your local Teledyne
LeCroy office for service.
Firmware Updates
Free firmware updates are available periodically from the Teledyne
LeCroy website at teledynelecroy.com/support/softwaredownload under
Oscilloscope Downloads > Firmware Upgrades. Registered users will
receive email notification when a new update is released.
Connect a monitor and pointing device to the WaveRunner 8000-R for
this procedure.
1. Go to the URL above and download XStreamDsoInstaller64.exe onto a
portable USB drive. If you don't yet have a user account on our website,
create one now.
2.
Close the oscilloscope XStreamDSO application by choosing File > Exit.
3. With the WaveRunner 8000-R powered on, insert the drive containing
the installer into one of the oscilloscope's USB ports.
4. Use the Windows Explorer installed on the oscilloscope to browse
to xstreamdsoinstaller_x.x.x.x.exe and double-click it to launch the
XStream Setup wizard.
5. Follow the wizard prompts, accepting all software and license
agreements.
6. When installation is complete, power cycle the instrument.
CAUTION. The installation may take several minutes, depending on
the length of time since your last update. Do not power down the
oscilloscope at any point during the installation process.

SERVICE
Service
If the WaveRunner 8000-R cannot be serviced on location, contact your
service center for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) code and
instructions where to ship the product. All products returned to the factory
must have an RMA.
Return shipments must be prepaid. Teledyne LeCroy cannot accept
COD or Collect shipments. We recommend air freighting. Insure the item
you’re returning for at least the replacement cost. Follow these steps for a
smooth product return.
1. Remove all accessories from the device. Do not include the manual.
2. Pack the product in its case, surrounded by the original packing
material (or equivalent).
3. Label the case with a tag containing:
• The RMA
• Name and address of the owner
• Product model and serial number
• Description of failure or requisite service.
4. Pack the product case in a cardboard shipping box with adequate
padding to avoid damage in transit.
5. Mark the outside of the box with the shipping address. Add:
• ATTN: <RMA code assigned by Teledyne LeCroy>
• FRAGILE
6. If returning a product to a different country:
• Mark the shipment “Return of US manufactured goods for warranty
repair/recalibration.“
• List any cost of service in the Value column and the original purchase
price “For insurance purposes” only.
• Be very specific about the reason for shipment. Duties may have to be
paid on the value of the service.

TELEDYNE LECROY WILL RETURN ALL PRODUCTS UNDER WARRANTY WITH
TRANSPORT PREPAID.
The product is warranted for normal use and operation, within specifications, for
a period of three years from shipment. Teledyne LeCroy will either repair or, at our
option, replace any product returned to one of our authorized service centers within
this period. However, in order to do this we must first examine the product and find
that it is defective due to workmanship or materials and not due to misuse, neglect,
accident, or abnormal conditions or operation.
Teledyne LeCroy shall not be responsible for any defect, damage, or failure caused
by any of the following: a) attempted repairs or installations by personnel other than
Teledyne LeCroy representatives; b) improper connection to incompatible equipment;
or c) for any damage or malfunction caused by the use of non-Teledyne LeCroy
supplies. Furthermore, Teledyne LeCroy shall not be obligated to service a product
that has been modified or integrated where the modification or integration increases
the task duration or difficulty of servicing the instrument. Spare and replacement
parts, and repairs, all have a 90-day warranty.
The instrument's firmware has been thoroughly tested and is presumed to be
functional. Nevertheless, it is supplied without warranty of any kind covering
detailed performance. Products not made by Teledyne LeCroy are covered solely by
the original manufacturer's warranty.
