Thank you for buying a Teledyne LeCroy product. We’re certain you’ll be
pleased with the detailed features unique to our instruments.
This guide is intended to help you install a WaveRunner 8000-R
oscilloscope into your test environment and prepare it for remote control.

Introducing WaveRunner 8000-R
WaveRunner 8000-R oscilloscopes utilize the WaveRunner 8000
acquisition system to provide a high-performance, 4 GHz oscilloscope in
a convenient, low-profile form factor.
The compact design has a height of less than 2U (3.5”, 8.89 cm) and
includes a standard rackmount kit, easily lending itself to be installed in
an automated test environment.
Unlike most digitizing systems, the WaveRunner 8000-R provides
the powerful, deep toolbox that is expected in a Teledyne LeCroy
oscilloscope. The full range of the WaveRunner 8000’s analysis capability
is available; including an array of serial protocol analysis packages and
application specific packages.
The WaveRunner 8000-R models are fully software-compatible with their
WaveRunner 8000 counterparts. Development can be conducted with the
assistance of the front panel and display of the WaveRunner 8000, then
seamlessly transitioned to automated testing.
A variety of remote connectivity options—LAN, USBTMC, and GPIB (with
optional adapter)—offer flexibility when connecting to the WaveRunner
8000-R. Teledyne LeCroy’s free WaveStudio software is a fast and easy
way to analyze acquired waveforms off-line, or remotely control an
oscilloscope from your desktop. CAUTION of potential damage

Operating Environment Precautions
Use proper power cord. Use only the power cord shipped with this
instrument and certified for the country of use.
Maintain ground.
The AC inlet ground is connected to the frame of the
instrument. Connect line cords only to outlets with safety ground contacts.
WARNING. Interrupting the protective conductor inside or outside
the oscilloscope, or disconnecting the safety ground terminal,
creates a hazardous situation. Intentional interruption is prohibited.
Connect and disconnect properly. Do not connect/disconnect probes or
test leads while they are connected to a live voltage source.
Observe all terminal ratings. Do not apply a voltage to any input that
exceeds the maximum rating of that input. Refer to the markings next to
the BNC terminals for maximum allowed values.
Use only within operational environment listed. Do not use in wet or
explosive environments.
Use indoors only.
Keep product surfaces clean and dry.
Do not block the cooling vents. Leave a minimum six-inch (15 cm) gap
between the instrument and the nearest object. Keep the underside clear
of papers and other objects.
Exercise care when lifting and carrying.
Do not remove the covers or inside parts. Refer all maintenance to
qualified service personnel.
Do not operate with suspected failures. Check body and cables regularly.
If any part is damaged, cease operation immediately and sequester the
instrument from inadvertent use.

Preparing for Remote Control
Powering On/Off
CAUTION: Connect only to grounded AC power. Be mindful of the
total power consumption, as connecting too many devices to a
single outlet can cause an overvoltage condition.
To power on, flip the Power Switch to ON. This automatically loads the
oscilloscope application.
The Remote Status Indicator on the front will flash when the oscilloscope
software is fully loaded and ready for remote control. It will remain a
steady green when a remote connection is established.
To power down, flip the Power Switch to STANDBY. When in Standby
mode, some "housekeeping" circuitry continues to draw power. The only
way to fully power down the instrument is to unplug the AC line cord from
the outlet. We recommend unplugging the instrument if it will remain
unused for a long period of time.
The WaveRunner 8000-R reverts to these factory defaults whenever
restarted after powering down:

Presets
The remote control setting is one of the few that do not revert to the
factory defaults when restarted, as it is critical to know what the setting is
in order to connect.
The factory default setting is LXI (VXI11), but the instrument will reboot
with whatever setting was last made.
We recommend that the remote control setting and the device address be
set locally at installation, prior to rackmounting, and that it not be changed
over a remote connection.
Remote Control Software
For all methods of remote control, an installation of NI-VISA is required on
the controller.
If you switch to TCPIP (VICP) remote control, also install the Teledyne
LeCroy VICP Passport for NI-VISA.
If the controller runs Windows, we recommend an installation of the free
Teledyne LeCroy WaveStudio software. WaveStudio will help you establish
and test the remote connection.
Teledyne LeCroy software is available from teledynelecroy.com/support/
softwaredownload under Oscilloscope Downloads > Software Utilities.
Initial Test Connection
Before rackmounting the WaveRunner 8000-R, we recommend making a
test connection from a PC to the oscilloscope using the default settings
to conrm that remote control is functional. This same procedure can be
used to test the remote connection after you have completed your remote
control conguration on the WaveRunner 8000-R, substituting whatever
connection type you have selected.

5. Expand the list of WaveRunner 8000-R functions in the WaveStudio
Devices pane and open the Terminal window.
6. In the top pane of the Terminal, enter the query: *IDN?
If the WaveRunner 8000-R responds with its identifying information,
remote control is functional.
7. Open Display Capture.
An image of the WaveRunner 8000-R touch screen should appear in
the WaveStudio window.
8. Clicking on the image of the WaveRunner 8000-R in WaveStudio,
choose Utilities > Utilities Setup and open the Remote dialog.
The Remote dialog will show any dynamic IP address pulled.
BASICS
1. Install WaveStudio and NI-VISA on the PC. Open any firewalls between
the PC and the oscilloscope to TCP/IP communications on port 111.
2. Power on the WaveRunner 8000-R and connect to a network access
point using a standard Ethernet cable. It is helpful if the network is
served by a DHCP server, as this will allow you to test addressing.
3. On the PC, open WaveStudio and select Add Scope.
4. On the Add Scope dialog, choose connection type LXI and enter the
host name (oscilloscope serial number printed on the rear). Click OK.
If the connection is successful, after a brief pause you will see the
WaveRunner 8000-R added to the list of devices with the status “Alive.”

When you are ready to make your actual remote conguration, connect a
monitor to either the DisplayPort or VGA video output, and a mouse and
keyboard to any of the USB ports. You can do this before or after powering
on the WaveRunner 8000-R. This will enable you to access both the MAUI
oscilloscope software and the Windows dialogs to make all the required
remote control settings. MAUI will appear on the external monitor as soon
as it is connected to the WaveRunner 8000-R.
Connecting via LAN
The WaveRunner 8000-R can be addressed using either the host name
or the IP address. We have found that using the full IP address is more
reliable when using automated control programs, provided the correct
address is known. See the MAUI Oscilloscopes Remote Control and
Automation Manual for more information about addressing.
The default host name is the product serial number, which is printed on
the rear of the unit and your registration card. This name is also available
from MAUI by going to Support > About. If the WaveRunner 8000-R is on
a network served by a DNS server, be sure it is known to the DNS server by
this name.
The WaveRunner 8000-R is preset to pull a dynamic IP address once it is
connected to a network served by a DHCP server, but this address will be
replaced whenever the oscilloscope is restarted after being powered down.
We recommend setting a static IP address for remote control, especially if
you will be using automated programs for control.
Remote Conguration
Connect an Ethernet cable from either port on the back panel to a network
access point. Be sure the WaveRunner 8000-R is on the same subnet as
the controller.
Using the monitor, go to Utilities > Utilities Setup and open Remote.
In the Control from eld, select either of two protocols for remote control
over LAN:
• TCPIP (VICP) supports MATLAB, VBA, VBS, C/C++ and JavaScript. To
use this method, also download and install the VICP Passport on the
controller.
• LXI (VXI11), the default, supports all of the the above, except MATLAB,
plus newer programming languages such as C# and Python. You do not
need the VICP Passport.
If desired, select Net Connections from the MAUI Remote dialog to access
the Windows networking dialogs and set a static IP address.
When nished, conrm that the correct IP address appears on the Remote
dialog and record it for use in VISA and ActiveDSO connect strings.
