Introduction
The Mercury Lamp is a dedicated accessory for the Evolution™ 300 and
Evolution 600 spectrophotometers. It is designed to enable the user to
verify that the wavelength calibration and bandwidth accuracy of the
instrument conform to the specification and to perform wavelength
recalibration if required.

Getting Started
This chapter provides important information about installing your
accessory.
Installing the mercury lamp
This accessory consists of a mercury discharge lamp mounted in a
dedicated unit.
Warning Before installing the mercury lamp, turn off the power to the
spectrophotometer and disconnect the spectrophotometer power cord from
the wall outlet or power strip to avoid exposure to hazardous UV
radiation. 
Warning Never look directly at the light beam or at its bright reflection. Always wear
protective glasses that will absorb UV radiation. 
1. Turn off the instrument and disconnect the spectrophotometer
power cord from the wall outlet.
2. Remove the access port cover.
The mercury lamp access port is located at the rear of the instrument to
the right of the sample compartment.
Remove the access port cover by rotating the quarter turn fastener
counterclockwise using a straight bladed screwdriver, or the edge of a
suitable coin.

Follow steps 1 and 2 above then proceed as indicated below.
1. Remove the blanking plate covering the window in the optics
compartment by pulling upwards.

Note This will not be needed when the mercury lamp is in place but should be
stored in a safe location so it can be reinstalled if the mercury lamp is later
removed. 
2. Plug the mercury lamp into the socket.
The mercury lamp occupies the socket, which is exposed by removing
the blanking plate.
Align the locating pins with the holes in the base of the mercury lamp
and ensure that the lamp base is located securely against the spring
loaded toggle.

Notice Do not touch the lamp envelope. Any fingerprints will damage the quartz
window of the lamp module. 
The lamp assembly should now be correctly positioned adjacent the
window in the optics compartment cover.

3. Replace the cover on the mercury lamp access port.
4. Reconnect the AC power cord to the instrument.
5. Power up the instrument.
Wait for the instrument to initialize.
The accessory is now ready for use. It is controlled from the operating
software.
Reverse the order given in the preceding procedure to remove the mercury
lamp.
Evolution 600
Follow steps 1 and 2 above and then proceed as indicated below.

2. Slide power supply into position and align holes with screw heads.
3. Once in place, tighten thumbscrew.
4. With output cable going over the top of the input cable, align the
lamp housing with pin.
5. Secure the lamp.
To do this, tighten down the captive screw using fingers.
Reverse the order given in the preceding procedure when you remove the
mercury lamp.
