Introduction
The Mercury Lamp is a dedicated accessory for the Evolution™ 300 and
Evolution 600 spectrophotometers. It is designed to enable the user to
verify that the wavelength calibration and bandwidth accuracy of the
instrument conform to the specification and to perform wavelength
recalibration if required.

Getting Started
This chapter provides important information about installing your
accessory.
Installing the mercury lamp
This accessory consists of a mercury discharge lamp mounted in a
dedicated unit.
Warning Before installing the mercury lamp, turn off the power to the
spectrophotometer and disconnect the spectrophotometer power cord from
the wall outlet or power strip to avoid exposure to hazardous UV
radiation. 
Warning Never look directly at the light beam or at its bright reflection. Always wear
protective glasses that will absorb UV radiation. 
1. Turn off the instrument and disconnect the spectrophotometer
power cord from the wall outlet.
2. Remove the access port cover.
The mercury lamp access port is located at the rear of the instrument to
the right of the sample compartment.
Remove the access port cover by rotating the quarter turn fastener
counterclockwise using a straight bladed screwdriver, or the edge of a
suitable coin.

Follow steps 1 and 2 above then proceed as indicated below.
1. Remove the blanking plate covering the window in the optics
compartment by pulling upwards.

Note This will not be needed when the mercury lamp is in place but should be
stored in a safe location so it can be reinstalled if the mercury lamp is later
removed. 
2. Plug the mercury lamp into the socket.
The mercury lamp occupies the socket, which is exposed by removing
the blanking plate.
Align the locating pins with the holes in the base of the mercury lamp
and ensure that the lamp base is located securely against the spring
loaded toggle.

Notice Do not touch the lamp envelope. Any fingerprints will damage the quartz
window of the lamp module. 
The lamp assembly should now be correctly positioned adjacent the
window in the optics compartment cover.

3. Replace the cover on the mercury lamp access port.
4. Reconnect the AC power cord to the instrument.
5. Power up the instrument.
Wait for the instrument to initialize.
The accessory is now ready for use. It is controlled from the operating
software.
Reverse the order given in the preceding procedure to remove the mercury
lamp.
Evolution 600
Follow steps 1 and 2 above and then proceed as indicated below.

2. Slide power supply into position and align holes with screw heads.
3. Once in place, tighten thumbscrew.
4. With output cable going over the top of the input cable, align the
lamp housing with pin.
5. Secure the lamp.
To do this, tighten down the captive screw using fingers.
Reverse the order given in the preceding procedure when you remove the
mercury lamp.

Using the Mercury Lamp
This chapter provides important information about using your accessory to
verify instrument performance.
Local Control
To operate the mercury lamp using Local Control software, follow these
steps:
1. From the Main Menu page, press the Utilities function key.
2. Highlight Instrument Verification and press Enter.
The following is an example of the Evolution 600 Instrument
Verification page:

Instrument verification
To use the mercury lamp to verify the wavelength accuracy, clear both
beams, highlight the required test and press Run.
The Cell Changer page is displayed.
The following example shows the Instrument Verification results using a
mercury lamp to run Wavelength Accuracy:
If more than one test is required, highlight each test and press the
Select/Deselect function key to select it. Ensure that both beams are clear
and then press Run to run the selected tests.
On completion, press the Save Results function key to save the results in the
instrument Library or to disk as required.

Wavelength calibration
Do not perform a wavelength calibration unless the results of the
Wavelength Accuracy Instrument Verification test indicate that
recalibration is necessary.
1. From the Main Menu, press the Utilities function key
2. Highlight the Wavelength Calibration on the utilities menu and
press Enter.
3. Select Proceed from the pop up menu and press Enter to start the
Calibration.
VISION
For instructions on the use of a mercury lamp with VISION software, refer
to the VISION on line Help system.
Wavelength Accuracy test
This test establishes the proximity of the wavelength value reported by the
instrument to the actual value as determined by comparing measured and
known values of mercury emissions lines.
To run a Wavelength Accuracy test, select Command > PV Tests.
The Performance Verification (PV) Method tab will be added to the
Method window.
The list of tests available will depend on which accessories are installed.
When the mercury lamp is present, Wavelength Accuracy and Bandwidth
Accuracy will be shown on the list.
Follow these steps to use the mercury lamp to verify that the wavelength
accuracy and/or bandwidth accuracy of the instrument is/are within
specification:
1. Clear both beams.
2. Click in the box to check the required test.

3. Click on the Run button in the PV Method page.
If both tests are required, check both tests. Ensure that both beams are
clear and then click on the PV Method Run button to run the selected
tests.
At the conclusion of the test, the results will be displayed in the
PV Test Results window.
4. Save the test results.
To do this, select File > Save > PV Test Results.
If a PV Test Result file is already open, new results will be added to the
existing file.

Wavelength Calibration
Do not perform wavelength calibration unless the results of the
Wavelength Accuracy test indicate that recalibration is necessary.
Click on Command > Wavelength Calibration.
The Wavelength Calibration dialog box is displayed.
Choose OK to perform the calibration or on Cancel to exit the dialog
without calibrating.

Mercury lamp status
If the software has switched the lamp on automatically to perform a
Wavelength Accuracy test, a Bandwidth Accuracy test or a Wavelength
Calibration, it will also switch the lamp off automatically.
When the mercury lamp has been installed in the instrument and
recognized by the software, an icon will be displayed on the Status Bar, the
color of which will depend on the status of the lamp.
Mercury Lamp Off.
Mercury Lamp On.
The mercury lamp will be switched on when the Lamp Change field on the
Method Parameters page is set to Mercury. It will be switched off when the
Lamp Change field is set to Xenon (Evolution 300) or
Tungsten/deuterium (Evolution 600).
Select Command > Lamp Status > Mercury to display the status of the
mercury lamp (or double-click on the mercury lamp icon).
The Mercury Lamp Status dialog box appears. A button is present to
switch lamp on or off, depending on its current status. The lamp energy
and lamp hours are displayed and may be reset from the Mercury Lamp
Status window.

Note If the lamp has been switched on manually, it must be switched off
manually. 
Note The mercury lamp should be switched off when not in use. 

Maintenance
This chapter provides important information about maintaining your
accessory.
Routine maintenance
Very little maintenance is required to keep the accessory in good working
condition. The exterior surface of the accessory should be kept clean and
free of spilled chemicals.
The lamp holder and lamp should be treated with the care normally
required for any precision optical component.
Notice Do not touch the lamp envelope. Any fingerprints will damage the quartz
window of the lamp module. 
